The song was written in honor of the birth of a child of Brahms's friends Bertha and Artur Faber in 1868. Years earlier, Brahms had briefly fallen in love with Bertha when she was a young visitor to his female choir in Hamburg, and during the playful courtship she used to sing him a lilting 3/4-time Viennese melody. The romance ended, but the friendship endured, and the melody that Brahms later composed for the private lullaby was a creative counterpoint to the earlier love song that the child's mother would remember singing to the composer. When he presented the gift to the Fabers, Brahms included this note to her husband: "Frau Bertha will realize that I wrote the 'Wiegenlied' for her little one. She will find it quite in order . . . that while she is singing Hans to sleep, a love song is being sung to her." Bertha was the first person to sing Brahms's Lullaby, both love melodies dancing flirtatiously in her head. Bertha's husband Artur was the receiver of Brahms' last words right before he died, when he brought the composer a glass of wine. Brahms said, "Oh that tastes very fine. You are a kind man." ffrf.org/component/k2/item/18436-brahms-the-freethinker
When i lay down to sleep for my last time , i wish both my girls are by my side playing this song to me as i’ve done a countless watching them sleep. That would be the most beautiful goodbye i would ever want from this life. My two precious little girls and this lullaby.
The first time my youngest cat- now 8 months old- fell asleep in my arms as a kitten, this is what played in my mind. Such an angel. Such angelic playing.
Words can't describe how perfect this song is and his take on it just brings tears to my eyes YO YO MA Thank you for this beautiful adaptation of a beautiful song
Perfection! I love the look of joy on YoYo's face. Such a beautiful song, such a beautiful soul. Brahm's would be very happy I think listening to this rendition of his famous lullaby. Bravo!
It is Weigh-Station/Way-Station, a rest area amidst the suffering, the pain, the estrangement of life in this beautiful but chaotic world, in this glorious but fragile body, with these people who intend to love us but sometimes unwittingly torment us. Thank you, Mr. Brahms, Ms. Stott and Mr. Ma.
@@johnmayer6533 Yes, I am a huge fan of classical music, of the cello, especially, and of yours, in particular. I have your “Essentials of Yo-yo Ma” on my iPad and in my Apple Music library. I have always enjoyed seeing you on TV over the years and listening to your many recordings on various classical music stations. I was so glad to find this lovely rendition of the Brahms lullaby, which you and the wonderful English pianist, Kathryn Stott, perform with such exquisite sensitivity.
@@johnmayer6533 Indeed, I am surprised! But I’m so happy to have the opportunity to tell you personally how much I enjoy your music and to thank you for sharing your beautiful musical gift with the world.
To my mind there are no words whatsoever to describe this beautiful performance! Mind you, saying that, on hearing this music, I can't help but think of the voice of Kathleen Ferrier whilst writing these words!
@YoYoMamusic . Thank you Yo Yo Ma. It is good to hear from you also. I looked at your website recently. I had no idea you have achieved so much! Your cello playing is truly unbelievable!
@YoYoMamusic . I got it wrong as to where I read of your achievements. I read it on the Wikipedia page or Facebook. It wasn't on the website page. Apologies Yo Yo Ma.
@YoYoMamusic . Evening Yo Yo Ma. My name is Maurice Hawkins and I live in Weston super mare in Somerset. Mum and dad and myself moved down here in 1964. I was born in a village called Great Somerford in 1957. I'm the eldest of four children.
may i suggest Peter Gabriel's most recent rendition of his anti apartheid classic: Biko, with Yo Yo Ma and 24 amazing musicians from around the world. To see Yo Yo Ma brandishing his cello and bow emphatically against hatred is indeed inspiring and stirring
The lullaby was first performed in public in December 1869 in Vienna by Louise Dustmann (singer) and Clara Schumann (piano). The lyrics of the second verse were adapted from an 1849 poem by Georg Scherer, with reference to the Christ Child in the Nativity.
I love listening to soothing music like this at the end of the day to help me shed the stress of the day. Play it 10 times in a row and it will replace whatever obnoxious song is stuck in your head! LOL Sweet dreams ya'll!

The way he plays is almost magical. So touching, like he's having childhood memories and is seeming to enjoy the piece very much.
My mom would sing this to me in her native German when I was little, it will always be special to me, thank you momma, I love you!❤
@Yo-yomaofficial hello, thank you for your artistry! I am fine how are you?

I need to get into my pajamas.
I like how she has a Fazioli chair and a Steinway piano
I thought of the same thing. Fazioli makes good Italian furniture lol
Nothing beats Steinway
I don’t think I’ve ever used the bench that came with any of my pianos. I need a much lower seat.
Her arse has Italian tuning!
I cried here, mercy. Mom sang to me every day, lucky I still have it alive. But music still does me so well today.
Kathryn Stott, Yo Yo ma, an astounding pair.
I honestly did not know this was written by brahms. I've heard this song my whole life too! Learn something new everyday
I play Yo YO Ma's rendition of Brahm's Lullaby for my 14 years old cat
