I should also clarify...my reel is actually the 410, which is extremely similar in design. I think it has to do with my baffle plat, which is a little different than the 300's. if I put it the way I think it goes....the bail functions properly but you can hear it hit the metal lip of the baffle plate on every rotation. If I put it the other way, it's smooth reeling, but the bail won't close when I start reeling. Thanks for your help. .

Thanks for your great tutorials! I have a question. I did your annual service as well as the head service and when everything is put back together....My bail doesn't close automatically when i start reeling. What did I do wrong? I worked perfectly fine before si started. Thanks much.

Another great video, thank you. What is the name of the tool you used to straighten out the trip lever please. Is that a Garcia Mitchell part?

      ianstevenson1903 it's a 1/2inch imperial but a 13mm also works if you're gentle.
I've just serviced a 410a and a 440a that are 40 years old and I'll be using them when the season starts over here

Is it against the law to restore, clean or strip the paint on these old Mitchell reels? Are they legal to fish with, since they have lead paint or will the game wardens confiscate them? It’s a shame because I really like these old reels. But maybe we are going to be forced to use the cheap plastic junk in Walmart to stay in total compliance. I’m afraid the authorities might confiscate all old reels in mandatory surrender initiatives. Please don’t think I’m trying to make an argument about gun control because that is not what this is about.
