Notes on "How to Take Notes": instead of actually taking notes on my hw LOL
notes are not to replace your lecture notes or your textbook
More important when it comes to actually studying:
active learning: practice questions, self quizzing,
teaching others
Time setting:
never write anything down unless you understand what
you're reading
Notes:
* help you digest material as you learn it
* can review what you wrote after
* aids in process of learning
GPS:
* help you get to your location as you're driving
* can review th eroute you took after
Use them to help you get where you wanna go in terms of
understanding, but only a little bit afterwards to see
where you actually went.
Supplies:
paper, pens, flashcards (maybe)
BDSM:
Big Picutre
Details
Small Picture
Memorization
1. Big Picture (Keep it brief)
- Find the big picture summaries or figures of what you're
learning and copy them down on a blank sheet
- Keep this sheet separate from all your other sheets
2. Small Picture/Detail (Whatever helps you understand the
content)
- take notes on the individual sections that follow the big
picture
- try to keep each small picture topic to its on page
- copy down any useful diagrams or pictures
- after you understand what you read: in first principles terms,
write down what you took away from it. (in the simplest terms specific
to the topic you're learning)
*write simly, diagram, shorthand, do whatever you feel helps
you best digest and organize information. Don't write down much
for the purpose of "looking back at later"
*Purpose: consolidate your learning and make sense of material as you
learn it.
How to take small picture/detail notes:
Do:
*Write whatever helps you undesrtand
*Write whatever you don't know
*Use shorthand/diagrams
*draw useful figures
*refer back to big picture page
*Just keep it simple
Don't:
*Write before you undersand, bitch
*Write everything down
*Spend too much time on making it look **PRETTY**
*Don't write down details that seem too obvious or things you'll never use
REMEMBER: this is more or less to help you consolidate your thoughts
and undesrtand the details & how they fit into the big picture
This is to help you understand the conceptual side of things
Refer to big picture as you go :
*Use to see how small picture topics relate to each other
*Don't get lost in the details
*To not get confused on how small picture topics relate to eachother
3. Memorization (However you do memorization, flashcards, anki, remnote, etc.)
Notetaking should address:
1. concepts
2. memorizing
Any pathways or lists or memorizing things:
*Use flashcards, or Anki, or remnote
*whatever you use for spaced repetition
1. so you have notes on conceptual side of things
2. but also something to help you memorize
Afterall, these 2 processes are different
When all is said and done
FXN > FORM
Good notes help you now, not later
Not prettiest way to take notes, but provides
*pretty effective, general guideline
*complete
*helps to separate conceptual & memorization side of things

I take my biology notes in the textbook itself by using the marginal spaces, sticky notes and white sheets( if required) and paste them back in the book. I use flowcharts, diagrams and summaries(of separate paragraphs) to consolidate the info. This way I can revise from my textbook directly without fussing over the notes. It's super convenient, efficient and less of a hassle before exams.
ps - thanks to my biology teacher for teaching us this method!

This is what I do but I still write a lot of info in brackets sometimes bcoz I get confused so I write analogies or examples so I know what I'm learning but I'll try to make them more concise using BDSM.

What I found out for my personal studies is that althought it is very convenient to e. g. have an iPad in lectures to take notes... in the end I had to rewrite those things on a simple peace of paper to get the stuff memorized... Does anyone have similar experiences or could someone explain why that's the case?

Hey I don't know the why but personally I like to read notes whenever and wherever and having them on your iPad and in a file or pdf etc just makes me go like noo I'm not looking at a screen to study and thus I have to write them down again to read them.
I don't like to read textbook PDFs or ppt docs in general so notetaking on ipad is so far away for me.
I will break my hand but make pen paper notes 😂
