As someone who's been going thru the last board exams of her life and officially done with school life, the best advices i could give the juniors are that please please please do study regularly. Especially the things you've learnt in class or lectures, you should recap them that day when you're home. Summarize the whole topic and write them down on your own way. You'll definitely see the results. I wish i realised this earlier now it's too late

    - 80 - 20 rule is important  don’t cram, memorize, taking notes, … Try to focus on that 20%

What this will do automatically is that every single time you come across such a question in the exam, that mistake will be the first thing that comes to mind and you will be sure to avoid it.
It does not really have a pattern persay. just write them however you want and just be sure to constantly revisit and recall them and fully classify the book as your mistake notebook and that you will never repeat whatever mistake that you write in that book

  • @mehakverma7043

I find that this works more for STEM students, like doing questions and stuff, but for humanities students, you have to spend lots of time reading and applying what you read through writing and assignments. It's unavoidable. I have never stayed up all night studying for a chemistry test, because I can just solve the practice questions and tests over and over again. And once you can solve the most difficult questions in the textbook, you are ready for the test. But the only all-nighters I've ever pulled were for English class. Writing an essay takes time, even if you do not notice the time. First you have to understand the subject. Then you have to formulate new and profound thoughts on that learned info. Then you have to articulate it in writing in order to apply your thoughts well so that the teacher can judge your knowledge. That's a solid B. But a solid A...well that's hard. You have to go above and beyond and really connect the readings to your own thoughts, and maybe even the world. And you have to do it well and convincingly and ope- it's 6am and you studied for 12 hours straight by accident.

    • @side5029
      @side5029 Рік тому +78

that was such a good summation but, tbh, not relatable. im planning to take humanities with so much pressure to take science and i think as my country has english as a second language, the standards over that subjects are much lower. in rural areas, just being able to say "i am a boy" in english is a subject of awe. maybe thats why getting almost 100% in english is easier for fluent/semi-fluent students. but reading your comment makes me much more apprehensive about my command over english...if i were to move abroad in the future, (which i most probably will), then would that be a herculean task? would english, my best subject, potentially become my worst due to higher standards in english-speaking countries...?

You literally just described social science .

    • @mehakverma7043
      @mehakverma7043 Рік тому +60

@@side5029 I'm from Canada, and English is not easy here, its all about organizing your words in a way that conveys what you know and convinces the reader your point. Writing is meant to be beautiful. Honestly I did take my fair share of STEM classes in grade 11 (chem, physics, functions, programming). And the science and math classes were indeed very difficult, even more difficult than the humanities. I was doing awful in them, but my problem back then was that I kept making notes (which is useless). But when I got a tutor my grades turned out fine and the courses were a lot easier, because it's just your ability to understand complex theories and functions of science and math. But I never needed to spend more than 3 hours per day on my STEM subjects. Because once you understood the unit and how to solve the difficult questions, you're set for the tests and exams.
Humanities requires you to think critically and beyond the scope of what you are given. I'm going into law so in grade 12 I dropped all my STEM classes and took philosophy, social studies, history, law, etc. Reading is very time consuming but it must be done. Planning your essay, writing your answer, thinking, these things are more time consuming than they sound. So while the "minimal time deep thinking" technique shown in the video may work for STEM classes, they do not work for humanities. I remember doing a philosophy assignment on the matrix and it took me a whole 2 days to answer 9 questions about the movie. (A bunch of kids got in trouble with that assignment because they used ChatGPT to answer them, which is why you should always keep your written outline and thinking before you type it up).
To answer your question about studying abroad, I'm also going abroad for Law School in Scotland and I'm kind of scared because they take the arts and humanities a lot more seriously. Honestly, your essay writing MUST be excellent if you want to study humanities in an English speaking country. Read as many of the classics as you can, it'll save you a lot of trouble.

1:Don't try to edit and create at the same time, when trying to be a perfectionist, it's really difficult to generate ideas. Instead just try to get the word count down and then revise. However, this skill will take some time to build up.
2:Try to write when you have the most energy and have clear goals.
3:Imo, reading the texts are inevitable, but you can maximize your 1st reading sessions. The very first thing I’m doing before studying or revising anything is to write down all the topics and then get 3 colours and mark the topics I already am familiar with, the ones I don’t fully understand and the ones I don’t understand at all. That takes only a few minutes and is so practical for having a good overview of everything and later for efficiently using your precious study time. Now when I start studying I first study the topics I don’t understand at all. My red flag is that I just love having a summary of all topics on one page. That’s why I always write my summary around a week before the test/exam, BUT it is so important to really just write a SUMMARY and not all the little details. I always do that on my computer because 1. I have more space on one page and 2. It’s just so much faster and easier. I love having my own summary for revising everything in a quick way (for example before sleeping or right before the test/exam). When I have prioritised my topics and wrote my summary (this takes me around 30-45 minutes) I’m gonna study all topics by using different study techniques that work best for me (I think it’s really personal which study techniques are working for you).
I really liked this video and just wanted to share my study habits! Please always remember to put your mental health first and don’t feel pressured to be this perfect student, because literally nobody is perfect! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

My problems are that I get distracted easily, am unmotivated and can't discipline myself to actually stay focused for longer periods of time. So although I am very productive when I work, I procrastinate way too much, which leads to having less time left, which stresses me out and makes me even less willing go go study. It's also nice to hear someone acknowledge that leaving all distractions behind isn't something you can just do and it takes time to get used to and pull through. Thanks a lot :)

Only now, I've started to abandon the idea of copying everything and I started focusing 100% on past exams, and it really makes a difference. I agree 100% with your video, especially the part about setting a goal to learn in a small amount of time. Another important tip is to study every day, even when you feel super tired. That way, after a few months, studying calculus 2 just becomes an everyday thing.

I seriously can’t get myself to practice past papers because I don’t even know how to answer any question. Would it be helpful/useful if I practice exam questions everyday (while checking the mark scheme for the answers) until I slowly get the hang of it, become knowledgeable and start working on my own without the mark scheme?

Hahahhaa really? Society is still stuck on something silly like that?
It’s always important to believe yourself innovate and see your results, and for that you have to say yes yes but I won’t be treating it like a bible to what others tell you. But still idk studying seems like something that it should progress in much faster than that imo 😂
I guess others want you to reach your potential? But.. what abojt the potential of living a happy life? Is that not important? Is it bc we’re too happy and excited about the new world we’re living in? And we think being a student is the time to build your foundation forever? Hmm I see I see… you do gotta remember that students will have more motivation and power to build a good foundation for their future if they are happy and living well rather than completely sacrificing their years like a slave for it.. but I guess that’s a concept people have to explore a bit in order to realize. I guess it’s everyone’s personal choice and I’d like to see everyone’s new innovations.. rather than I’d like to criticize those who seem reckless based on my own clueless ideas 😂

I've already graduated and am moving into a MBA program, but I highly recommend delaying your distractions, as this is a key point to how to become successful in your studies. Both my parents (Singapore and Chinese) always used this method of forcing me to study 1-2 hours, then allow me to spend my time freely until later at night when we do a quick review. This is very efficient and for parents, this is a great way of parenting that will help more to guiding your kid while they will eventually learn to appreciate the effort you have put in.

Everything you said is true. I'm a med student and I started off solely making pretty notes on my ipad, and I look back on them now and i don't remember jack shit. As soon as I gained access to question banks, ditched the need to have perfect notes, I started seeing the results. I use note taking for more consolidation; to compare similar and different things (because that's what's tested). I am still trying to overcome that more hours=more knowledge and it is a somewhat hard pill to swallow. What I've learnt that how many hours of deep work that allows you to grasp content is worth way more than idly sitting at a desk and only ever taking a breath when having to eat/shower. I feel like that not putting much pressure on yourself opens up the gates of your mind more lol. Wonderful tips and i love the concept of deep work. i am on a journey to fully maximizing on that concept, because it really is the key.

As someone who struggled as hell with organisation, procrastination and all messed up things a good student should avoid, I'd been obsessed watching all this study techniques on UA-cam and Internet.
I got super overwhelmed, none of these worked for me and my anxiety started crawling to my head. "I need to find the perfect method and schedule" I used to say-...
And sometimes the best studying method is so simple as paying attention in class and asking questions. Understanding what ur being teached is the key. Furthermore, having a keen interest on the topic and searching doubts on UA-cam or internet overall, has helped me alot.
I like taking effective notes, like writing the date and topic, also doing like a little scheme with brief explanation of what we are talking, while writing at a side vocabulary that idk. With a basic scheme, at home, I can highlight those things that I kinda struggle and search up the info that I don't understand. After that it's just about accumulating notes till you have a nice lil book to study and revise for the exams.
I advice revising everyday what u had done yest. 5 mins or so, using the question method in ur head. So when the exam it's close, you already know pretty much everything and you only need to revise a little bit.😊
In subjects that revolves around problem solving it doesn't work ofc, those I highly recommend practicing everyday with exams that other students may have posted on the internet or problems that might equal to the level of the exam's.
Even tho, I really suggest finding ur self-made methods that adjusts to ur conditions and necessities.🙃

    • @HistoryHatesLobsters

I relate a lot to what you wrote. I never really struggled with working efficiently but starting to work at all. I also take a lot of notes in classes etc. and know how I need to study but I really struggle with maths even though I know I need to solve a lot of problems since learning the theory doesn't help. But I really hate it and never do.
All those study videos are promoting just doing better and getting over it, but it's really not that easy to discipline yourself like that.
And in the end, you're right, you need to find what works for you and sadly others can suggest options but you somehow have to figure it out on your own.
I hope everyone figures it out (sooner rather than later, including me)

Another good tip is to go to college for something you actually enjoy. I'm an absolute nerd for zoology and geology. I dropped out of school in 6th grade so I could spend all of my time studying. It is like a hobby to me, I don't see it as work. I actually enjoy sitting down and spending 8 hours every single day learning about tarantulas and rocks. It is very interesting to me and I love talking about it. I take notes in google docs and I write essays for fun. I know no one will ever see them, but I still continue to write essays. It helps me retain knowledge. I also spend a lot of time talking about zoology and geology with my friends. It makes me happy. I start college in January and I am so damn excited. I can't wait to learn more! Zoology doesn't make a lot of money so that degree will just be a fun project for me. Geology makes quite a bit of money so that will be my job. I can't wait to explore the world and look at rocks. I absolutely LOVE rocks.
Also, a good way to learn is to take practice tests for exams and for the specific area you are studying in. For example: if you are learning about aquatic animals, take tests about them. The more tests, the better. You will learn a lot more by taking tests. I did not study for the HISET, the college accuplacer, or the written portion of the driving test you do before you get a driving permit. I did practice tests instead and the majority of the questions are on the actual test. I did the tests once a day for 2 days, then every other day. The day before the tests I did them again. I've found that you have to kinda let the words marinate in your head. If you continue to do the same test over and over again you won't learn anything, you will just memorize the answers. If you take some time in between them and completely forget about it, then next time you take the test you will remember some of the answers. Every single question from the practice HISET and accuplacer tests were on the actual test by the way. The majority of the practice test questions for the driving test are on there too. You will have a higher chance of getting a higher score since you know you will get at least 5 or 10 questions right depending on the length of the practice test and the actual test.

Only when starting teaching myself I realised that sooo many students actually have no clue about basic learning skills or how to be efficient when reading/memorising! I believe it should be taught at school, and it must align with the exam system too.. Thank you for the great video!

Alright y’all I ma be dead honest I am an Indian and I am no gifted student however I ace all my exams because of my clear passion… success will ALWAYS derive from passion so me personally I don’t believe in bs that these so called “organized” UA-cam students have to say about ohhhh “you should study 2 hrs a day everyday” or ohh “you need to get 8hrs of sleep” NO it’s all about passion if you have the passion for something no matter how tired you are no matter how dead inside you are you will succeed and that’s my message to you guys “Follow your dreams and passion” not some bs on the internet

Unfortunately a lot of us are stuck doing something we are not passionate about because we just haven’t found it. But I agree, I cannot bring myself to study sometimes because it’s so boring to me 😢

Hey, I'm a university student I do electrical engineering. I had to relearn how to study because college was beating my ass during the first semester.

I remember during my mock exams, I would overhear my classmates saying how they went through 10 past papers last night but they got the lowest mark and I would be there with the knowledge of half a past paper and some videos and the hope in my heart that my memory won't fail me and a wish in my head that 'those' topics won't come
