Nice reaction. This album marks the change in opeth from proggy death-metal to pure progressive rock, without any harsh growling vocals to be found from then on in any of their upcoming albums. I really like the dark and mystic undertones in this one. It's totally underrated in my opinion.

Re: the album cover.
Per Mikael in an interview - Åkerfeldt said the album is rife with symbolism. The tree, reminiscent of a tree of life, represents the band flourishing in the present while its roots "going down to hell" represent the band's death metal history. The faces on the tree are those of the current band members, with Wiberg's head falling off the tree representing his departure. The skulls underneath the tree also represent past band members. The burning theatre in the distance represents the decline of civilization.
This all makes a ton of sense--thank you, as always, for the great insights! What a cool dramatization of the band, all in one picture.

Such a sinister song ! It's not that death metal demonic sound, but still it's so evil ! Rhythm, riff and every section represent that sinister evil vibe with proggy jazz style ! It's just wonderful how they can manage to be heavy as hell but without any metal cliches or sound! I highly recommend "Strange Brew" and "Universal Truth" from Newpeth. Keep up the good reaction 👌👏

Great in-depth reaction again. This was the album that divided Opeth fans as they ditched the album growls for good, but in my humble opinion, it's a masterpiece. Dark, moody and they let the music breathe. A fine album.
If this song is any indication it's solid for sure. Super cool.

Yes, least favorite, but hearing Mikael sing makes it easy to hear in reactions.
As for Jordan Peterson... I'm not not sure I've seen enough that I know enough about him besides watching some video reactions he was in. If you can be more specific since I don't always remember what I watch, then I'll be able to answer better. Are you on X?

@deminybs Definitely a Peterson fan! Watched hundreds of hours of his lectures online, and I've read Maps of Meaning, 12 Rules, and Beyond Order. I'm actually going to see him speak in Missouri next week! He's a brilliant and important public intellectual, and a much needed contrasting voice to the prevailing narrative.
That being said, he's dead wrong every now and again, notably some current foreign policy things. As Murray Rothbard would say though, everyone is allowed one deviation!
