Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Seeing your boy on a skid steer reminds me of how great it is to be raised on farm. We have a small cattle operation of about a 100 head of cow calf pairs. We also do concrete construction. I would never quit the cow operation me and my dad started cause of my kids and I just love seeing the fruits of my labors. Guess what I’m trying to say is with the kids just getting to spend time with you is actually teaching them life lessons and skills wether we realize it or not. I work a lot of young men from the city that literally know nothing about machinery.
Both my girls can drive a standard truck. Most young people have no clue. Farm life is the best life. Tough long hours but worth every bit of it!!! God bless our farmers.

Ahhhh...picking rocks. A friend and I were usually tasked with picking rocks in one of their farm's fields along the Maple River in NW Iowa when we were young.
Rather than a tractor and a rock picker, we used a '76 Ford pick-up in 4L which we walked beside, throwing the rocks into the bed as it idled along. We used a seatbelt through the steering wheel to help keep the wheel straight-ish and it worked really well. When we got to the end of the row, one of us would jump in and turn the truck around to go back the other way.

Have them run a little here and there and by the time he's sixteen he will be able to be trusted to plant for hours. That go's for the roller, sprayer, combine, and tillage. It also helps if grandpa helps teach! Love how the dogs get along, Anna could have didg for breakfast if she wanted to, But there play mates.

I could have bought the Case cheap at 35K but found a 800 hour JD 8400 for a 100K. Our corn harvest starts somewhere around the last week of August to the first or second week of September. We plant Soybeans, first crop, starting around the last week of May to first of June, mostly 4.8 to 5.0. That harvest is usually starts in October sometime. We also raise winter wheat, which is all headed out now and harvest will be in mid to late June. We double crop soybeans after wheat also, usually no-till into wheat stubble.

So, I'm a retired nurse, but since running across this channel I'm captivated by what farming is now as compared to when I was around it as a kid in the 1960's. I have a question. On each end of the planter there is a folded up leg that resembles one of the folded front legs of a praying mantis. What are they, and what do they do?

Jajajaja it also looks like a good way for the kids to get ahold of you. That is very nice.

Thanks for checking on that woodchuck. It reminded me that I had to go set a trap....er...I mean alternative housing option...for a woodchuck I saw go under the barn.

I always liked the sound of the big rocks landing in the rock picker and when you dump them out!!

The rock picker is something I wish we'd had when I was growing up. Used to put little flags down by ones we couldn't lift. We picked up everything from small 1" diameter rocks to the biggest we could lift.

field cultivator leaves more on top but whip that off and better soil contact than mixed with trash.

Thanks again for the great video. Good job finishing up the corn. Now on to soybeans. More work there with ground preparation and spraying. Nice you got the part on the planter fixed. Seems always something needs attention. Like your rock picker. We never had one. It works pretty darn good getting them in the bucket. Sorry your big tractor is down again. Seems to have some bugs in it right now. Am sure they will get it figured out. Think you said the fan system was broken. Appreciate the way both you and dad approach broken down items. Just get it fixed, no reason to get all mad about it. You have good relationships with your equipment dealers and that helps. Good way to operate. Glad the kids enjoy riding on the tractor. Neat family ways. You hang in there. Take care and be safe. Thanks Becky for editing. Thanks for your time Zach so we can go along. Iowa farm boy from years ago.

Surprised Deere doesn't have a "Rock" button on the fancy screens that later can be shared to take you to each rock as a waypoint...
