      It seems a shame to lose all that seating at your table, why not put the new fridge/freezer in the forward sleeping area since you have an aft sleeping area?

    For longer passages I would advise you to consider the bench in the middle of the boat as a bed! Especially with stronger winds and higher waves the middle part is the calmest of the boat as that's where the keel is! In the front and the back the boat moves way more which makes it uncomfortable to sleep

    Pro Maine boat builder and long time viewer here :) A couple ideas; one: I recommend adding a couple coats of varnish to at least the exterior bright work this winter (and continually every year or two) even if it looks ok. Once the varnish is burned through or visibly damaged it becomes a much more intensive project. Two: the most common solution to the awkward birth shape is to add a diddle board (not really an official name, but what I usually hear it referred to, no joke) its a trapezoid shaped board that bridges the gap inbetween the 2 halves that sits on rabbets or a ledge attached to the sides of the bunk. The board is easily removable when not in use. Hope you don't mind the unsolicited suggestions! Can't wait to see how the projects turn out.

    If you fill in the gap with wood by make a new platform for the bed ( more of a queen size that fits on top of the current layout) you can add hinges and still have accessibility to the storage underneath while giving you a larger bed. 🤷🏼‍♀️😁

    One thing to do in April (or a month or two before launch) is plan one or two nights a week to do "anchor watch" or "passage watch". One go to bed early while the other is "on watch". Then switch out at planned times. Some like 2 hour watches but some like 3 or 4 hour watches. That way you guys can figure out what works best for you. We used a different system. I can get to sleep fast just about any time. Deb would do 8PM to about 1 or 2 AM. Then I would get up and cover til 8AM. It just worked for us. Having a idea of your plan before needed makes it much easier when you get on the boat. You have a great boat. Ken

    I've been on a sailboat exactly 3 times (not counting boat shows), but love these videos and stories! Installing a refrigerator and a water maker seem like really good ideas to make living aboard more manageable long term, based on what I see on other channels. Also, I love a book called "By Way of the Wind" by Jim Moore. It is a blue water cruising couple's stories interspersed with practical tips based on things they've learned along the way. This book is always in my suitcase when we travel.

    Nature's Head composting toilet. Lose the holding tank entirely. Claim more space. Eliminate (pun intended) through-hulls.

    • @duanemiller5606
      @duanemiller5606 3 роки тому +7

      Many a sailor has tried that and quickly decided they wanted the regular marine toilet back because you got to carry that stuff through your boat while it’s rocking and bouncing out in the water and sooner or later you’ll probably have a really yucky mess to clean up. If their goal was just to go sailing on the weekend where they could anchor nightly it wouldn’t be so much of a deal but when you’re talking about major ocean crossings you’re going to half times when it’s just bad weather and the boat’s rocking and rolling and you got to carry the mess out. Of course it’s each to their own so it doesn’t hurt to recommend or suggest it.

    • @lexylexylexy1234
      @lexylexylexy1234 3 роки тому +3

      An airhead can be fitted with a y valve for overboard discharge, so no mess while underway and can still be contained like a holding tank for marinas and sensitive anchorages.

    A project that seems small but will make the biggest difference is changing the cabin door to a singular door instead of multiple panels. When you need to leave in a rush the pannels are the worst, especially in swells. I've been boating for 19 years and it will make a difference, you can have a magnet on the door and the fibreglass so it will stay in put even in bad weather. It's crazy how much you've learnt you even have the vocabulary down!

    You really don't need to cover the boat for winter. I never cover mine. It just keeps the snow off. You'll have to give it a good scrubbing in the spring anyways and you just throw all that plastic away. (Ugly).
    Sailrite just made a video on making a reusable cover if you want.
    You DO need to winterize the boat. Pour some rv/marine antifreeze in all the drains, in the water tank, run the pump with the antifreeze through all the water lines and the raw water pump in the engine. Don't forget the outside shower if you have one. :-) also I pour some in the bulge to keep things from freezing.

    You guys broke me into youtube van life, i feel like your my kids and I'm watching you live a wonderful life. You two have grown so much and i was so excited when you finally got married. What an adventure with oddy.(?) Now you have signed up for the most grandest adventure of your lives and i get to be there with you. We had fun this summer you guys did the best job ive ever seen anyone explore. You read so much and learned everything you had to learn and are still learning so im feeling safer for you. I'm glad you didn't just rush out to the sea. You are both such sponges for learning boating its very much needed. I grew up on boats in fresh water and sea but i hated it on the sea because my grandpa got us stuck out in about 30 foot waves and i thought we were goners plus all of us were throwing up off the side of the edge.
    I swore to never go out in the sea again. But i did but in a ferry. Makes a lot of difference between a family fishing boat and a ship. Lol Your learning a lot, storms are so important to not under estimate. They shift in the spin of a dime. So always update storm watching and you two will be so safe. I'm excited for your preparation and your launch.

    Hey guys! I really enjoy your videos; so nice; so well done 👌
    Your boat is truly great and surly fit for ocean crossing. On top, you’ve done so good refitting everything last year and this year projects will take it to such a high standard!
    However, I have the feeling that you’re missing one thing just, one thing that it’s not a small job, but crucial in my opinion when you will encounter a storm. Situation is that your helm wheel is very small and in high seas you will need to steer a lot. Please consider this upgrade at the cost of cutting into the cockpit sides and re do the fibreglass on the sides. There are lots of boats having this option done so you can search the internet and just copy the solution. Usually, the small sloops with helm wheel built in the 80’s would be like that.
    I wish you all the best and to be fair, meeting you one day in a Marina, somewhere far far away, would make me really happy!

      Maybe you could check what Sailing Uma / Kika & Dan have done with the interior. They have some unique solutions.

    How cool, season two! It is extremely reassuring to see how well you two prepare for your adventures and don't just rush into it YOLO style - I think postponing the start of your circumnavigation was a good call to that end.
    Also really cool to see your book collection - if you don't have it already, I have heard the "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder is really good and shouldn't be missed on a blue water cruiser.
    Maybe you guys could do like a book review video once you have studied the books, I'd be really interested in your take on them! (And of course another review after a year of cruising to see which books pass the real life test...) All the best for all your endeavours!

    Please take a look if Altered's taps and shower head are compatible with your water system's pressure and connectors: they are extreme water saving products which could help you save water on the boat

    Lou Looks fantastic! I know how it feels, too. Freedom. Cut mine off 2019 summer solstice, and it was both long AND felted on the top part. Just thinking about cutting it again... not sure.
    You have so much space! The bath is going to be wonderful. Also, you have all this space to dance around in! 🌞

    For weather, look into Chris Parker. He is a sailor who does weather forecasts for boaters and he is fabulous. He taught some really good courses for our rendezvous the last few years and we learned a lot!

    I like how you do little projects to upgrade Penelope, and be ready till May!
    I know it will look beautiful in the end, when there is will there is always a way!

    Great video guys. Funny story I was watching with headphones and Remy leant over my shoulder and said "I know that guy, he did a water fast living in a van and inspired me to do my fast last year." And I'm like really? Well, we are patrons of theirs so you better start watching their sailing eps! Haha.

    Such a lovely cottage, light and bright! I like the little reading/dining area with the paddle in the background. And Lou, you also look great with short hair! 'Fris koppie' in Dutch. 🙂 So nice to see that you're going to make improvements on the boat. Good luck with all you've planned for this winter and enjoy every minute of it. Nice intro 👍🏻 Thanks again for a lovely video. ❤️
