This was definitely a tough one! We tried to blur as much as possible but maybe don’t eat lunch while watching this? Thanks so much for watching and commenting, we really appreciate all the positive support ; ) ---- Lou
So in looking at your project, it occured to me that for the maybe a little more or the same amount of money you could have purchased a composting toilet and would not have to deal this anymore. People really like their composting heads and there's no smell. Plus by getting rid of your marine toilet you could get rid of one or more through hull(s) and the the holding tank, thus giving you some extra storage space. More and more areas in the US are becoming NDZ ( no discharge zones) and you won't have to deal with pump outs anymore. Just a thought.
Funny, only the two of you could make fixing a head uplifting and leave the viewer smiling. Looking forward to seeing what else is going to get fixed on the winter bill series.
We learned to use a tank deodorizer and digester (we used Digest-It) each time we do #2. We just put in about a capful (maybe a 1/2 oz? In the bowl before we flush. It works great!
As someone mentioned below, you cannot pump out less than 3 miles off shore. When you put the boat in the water, the water cops will check the valve. If it is not locked closed, you will get a serious fine. Maryland is really strict with south bound boats and do a lot of "safety checks". You can use a keyed lock, a wire tie or just wire. I hate using 5200 on those joints. You will get a clog at some point. Use a heat gun to break down the 5200 to release it. I just double clamp, one in each direction. If I ever got another boat, I would go composting. I had a Wilcox Crittenden ( the M-Benz of heads). After a couple rebuilds I swore I would just get the cheapie Jabsco and throw it away when it needed a rebuild and get another.
Curious as to why not go with a composting toilet set up? Also I LOVE your positive energy as a couple, and how you both encourage and cheer each other on.
You two seem like quite wonderful humans. Always refreshing to watch. I was wondering if you find it difficult to cut loose with rent money after years of not having to pay rent.
Don’t forget to replace the intake water hose from the overboard seacock that supplies sea water to the toilet. Also make sure that you replace the hose for the deck mounted pump out very important as that hose also supplies a lot of the odors that you’ll find.
The Japanese use a strong hydrogen peroxide for cleaning the onsen and getting rid of mold and smells. If you get a high percentage hydrogen peroxide and put some into a squirt bottle it may help with upkeep.
We got tired of the smell, did our research and went with the Airhead. You will never get rid of the waste odor as long as the are hoses and a holding tank. The compost toilet may not be for everyone but we would never go back.To us it was a no brainier. Now our home smells fresh and clean.
I know this is a very common experience amongst people who watch Wild We Roam videos but I just did a hearty laugh when I realised that I was watching a video about fixing a toilet while I ate my lunch, not fully understanding all the steps that were taking place, but really enjoying myself :) Thanks again Wild We Roam :)
Bildge, Head plumbing ( plastered with pre-owners-number-twos ), Diesel engine . Accumulated a very unique “wild funk” that makes boat owning so much fun. Get some new plumbing, new holding tank etc. and you’ll be fine, until it starts again. Heater helps against condensation and mould ( another funk ) and new seals on windows and hatches keep the environment outside. Mostly. If you don’t like d.i.y. , run away 😂
"Little Bear?" ❤️❤️ My sister makes up nicknames like that. Absolutely love you guys! So happy you got winter home to work on boat. You've made such AMAZING improvements! I'm very, very happy for you, that after that hard work day, you go to comfy cozy home use dishwasher cook relax and study, study, study..if I knew Lou and you'll be navigating by the stars pretty soon!
Filter on the holding tank vent makes it so much nicer for neighbors downwind (or yourself if the wind is still). Nothing like a tank belching stinky every there's a flush!
All 5200 will be a pain in the future but might help with the smell now.... also when double hose clamping cock them at different positions so the screw portions don't line up. Will get a better seal
Beautiful beginning of the video! Nicely filmed and lovely music. I am so proud of you having done this stinky but necessary job. You will be so happy when the toilet situation is working as it should while sailing the waters! 🙂 Well done! And yes, you are a good team! 👩🏽🤝👨🏼 Lots of love 💜🧡💚💙💛
Nice job! on your final wrap up I noticed that you only used one hose clamp on a lot of your connections you might want to add one so you have two at each joint. A holding tank Bio treatment to the system a few days before haul out and a couple of full flushes to the system will make the next job more pleasant. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for these tips, Ray!! We really appreciate it and are so thankful for the sailing community watching out for us with seasoned words of advice 😊
We have had airheads in all our boats this current one had two heads so we kept the aft a marine marine head but it’s never used it’s now the cat’s bedroom. We will never go back to a marine head again lol!! Have fun!!
Yes all boats have challenges with smells! Takes work and regular attention to keep the smells at bay. By the way cushion foam fabrics and any wood that has been damped absorbs odor. Sunlight and air helps but sometimes you have to just replace it. Doing boat work near home base is so so much easier than on the hook or when you are cruising. Great decision to stay shore until you complete the essentials!!
Hi Dana and Lou, As I was doing my afternoon walk and collecting vitamin D from the outside there was not a better company but to watch your new video! Wow you two, well done 🌷🌷🌷look at how much progress you have made for those two days on Penelope yaay!!!I am genuinely happy for you two! It looks and I am sure smells much better. Nat, thank you so much for this darling comment and the kind words! We definitely have zero regrets about the intense mask, we are so glad to have it (useful for many projects, actually!) Wishing you the best of luck with your toilet project!! Sending love to you in Oklahoma 😊
Just did this on the boat. Broke the head down and cleaned with hydrochloric acid, all new hoses (trident hose), new y valve just like you have. Hadn’t done it in 4 years and it was amazing how much calcium build up there was. Important is to really flush even when just do #1 so don’t leave any sewerage in the hoses. Also think as live aboard need to do more frequently. I plan on doing HCL acid every other month. Had the same hose you used and it was really great never had any smell at all. What was the white stuff you used when putting in the hoses?
Oh the joys of boat ownership!! If i may suggest, once finished, add some fresh water, rv antifreeze and holding tank chemicals to get you to launch. Once launched, head to the pump out and do that several times flushing with fresh water. This is a well made go anywhere boat so enjoy!!
Good for you to just tackle this one straightaway. An unpleasant, but essential, project. Might as well get it done! Wr also have that exact y-valve and we did have problems with it leaking at the O-ring swivel points from new. There can not be any tension on the hoses pulling at either of the three connections or else that will cause the O-ring to not seal all the way around and it will leak yuck or smelly "air." Just started this video and I'm eating a bagel.. should I stop? hahaha
bahaha i sat down with my brownie and tea (as is my tuesday tradition) to watch and was like... uu maybe better to eat the brownie first!
just a thought,,, how about a homemade compost toilet so u don’t have a black tank?
You 2 are AMAZING!! I feel super spoiled after watching this one! Dana, I wish I had your verve & bravery!! Love you guys!! 🥰
The last shot of you guys enjoying a meal together in that minimalist room. Aaaahhhh sooooo restful 😃

This episode reminded me of Sailing Soulianis when they pulled out their tanks, etc. & chose to go with the Natures Head.
Getting the dirtiest job done first, well done! I really liked the music in this video. Please keep it coming. Greetings from across the pond👋
Thanks so much, J P!! So glad you liked it 😊 Sending warmest greetings back! ❤️
I agree. The music in their videos is always really nice and fits the theme of their videos well. It’s definitely a part of the reason why I watch.

Forgot to add- if you use a heat gun on that white tubing, be careful not to heat too much, it melts the clear plastic liner on the inside.
Curious as to why not go with a composting toilet set up? Also I LOVE your positive energy as a couple, and how you both encourage and cheer each other on.
I hope and pray for the day you will make a cookbook.
A mini cookbook comes with their ebook!
You two seem like quite wonderful humans. Always refreshing to watch. I was wondering if you find it difficult to cut loose with rent money after years of not having to pay rent.
here in Greece, its custom to have a basil plant in ur boat, which absorbs sm of the smells.
Have you considered a composting toilet ? They seem to be getting quite popular on boats now

I recommend you do double clamps on every part of the tube, not just one a few. Worth the investment for sure. Good job so far!

Apparently your son and I have the same sense of humor because I laughed too but, i'm in my 40's! 😆
Being 24 I said the same exact thing when Lou said “heavy duty”

Yes please. Me too! X
I would also appreciate to know your recipe. Thanks and congratulations for your video. Very interessting.
if it's the recipe I'm thinking of, it's in their cookbook! and it's delicious!
Oh my gosh PLEASE bring back the film content!! I absolutely loved that period of your channel!!

The lighting is excellent because of the foil! Looks super nice on video haha
Glad to see you double clamped the pipes
yo! this is so fun! we laughed a lot, dealing with plumbing in a small space can be horrible but with an attitude like you guys, anything can be fun
send that recipe our way, that dinner looked so good !
I can literally feel this beautiful connection you guys have through the videos ☺️💕

Thanks so much, Paul!! We are so glad this particular job is done, ha! 😄
