I always had a real soft spot for this game. I legit don't think it sucks. The camera is buggy, but I think the game is still good in spite of it. I loved how you encounter vampires as common roaming enemies.
Castlevania Legacy of Darkness on N64 is the improved game, better camera, etc. Same game if I'm not mistaken, but finally finished the way they intended with longer deadline.
@@shaun8062 It's a prequel, as it takes place 8 years earlier and you play as Cornell instead of Carrie or Reinhardt, but you can unlock Carrie and Reinhardt's quests once you beat the game. Other than that, it's all the areas from the first one, but has a few new levels peppered here and there and some new enemies and bosses. The only other minor change, is that one is missing some voice clips which I imagine were cut to save space. There's also a 4th gameplay mode where you play as Henry, the kid Cornell rescues, who's now all grown up, but it's a 4th Survivor from RE2 type affair where it's short and really not important to the story. It's definitely the better game because, like you said, the camera was improved a bit too. Though, I feel how "bad" the camera was even in the original is grossly over-exaggerated - remember, and I say this as someone who loves AVGN, he's the reason the camera in that game is so infamously seen as bad and he couldn't figure out that, to continue the game, you had to press A to interact with a wall lol.
@@ScrambledAndBenedict AVGN's inability to play early 3d games in general is just worse than the average person, so I can't stand his reviews of n64 games. He shouldn't even be allowed to hold an n64 controller as far as i'm concerned.
@@shaun8062 I like AVGN on the whole, and I get that he playing a character, but I can't help but think his bias against 3D is genuine and it's probably one of his biggest flaws. This was my first and favorite Castlevania. I always thought that about the Villa too, I spend 80% of my playthroughs just walking around the villa. I did always wonder though why there is only one bed in the entire place and no bathrooms or kitchen.
This game deserves a remake. Its my favorite castlevania. Growing up i played draculas curse on NES and bloodlines on genesis but when this came out and it was 3d the developers took a a very theatric, atmospheric and immersive approach at the game. You are on an adventure through wallachia and theres even little sidestories with the merchant and the lady watering her white roses for example. I think they could remake this with the same rpg approach and make it something great. It has a lot of character. The other 3d games on xbox that they made felt too much like devil may cry or god of war. This ones good
Looking back on this game I actually notice it actually tries to be Resident Evil due to Survivor Horror being very popular at the time like the asking you "Do you want to press this switch?", having a inventory, opening doors and the way they open not to mentioning getting keys, having a "status" on your health bar checking your condition, pressing 'use' to examine your environment, talking to characters, puzzles, also even the Villa manor is suspiciously like the Foyer of the Spencer Mansion.
Castlevania 64 is one of my favs. My only complaint about C64 is the characters looked too "pastel" and did not contrast with the background properly it kind've cheapened the look. just increasing the contrast on the character textures would fix this and maybe increase the darkness a tiny bit on them as well.
Oh my gawd, that's incredible. Way to go Gitech! (The person who made the textures). I purchased this game when it first came out, I was heart broken it was so terrible, nothing like the old games, after forcing myself to play it for what felt like an eternity, but I probably only made it 5 percent into the game, I never played it again (and then my 13 year old sister had fucking drunken party and those bastards stole my N64 and all my games)

Some things of Note. I wish Vincent was dragged into the final fight with you. It's weird that he shows up at the last hour and just vanishes. I don't like that the keys to the clock tower are in the same rooms as the doors they belong to. It's like they realized they couldn't do any backpedalling after designing the levels and just rolled with it. Really with they ported these versions of Rein and Carrie's campaigns to Legacy of Darkness - it doesnt make any sense that 8 years later, Rein and Carrie get in the exact same ship that already sank, for it to sink again and for them to fight the same water dragon that was killed by Cornell. Between these two versions is a pretty great game. Oh well
This frickin game... I got softlocked because I picked up the mandragora first on the 64. Broke my save. Never got the wall broken. Cool to see how the game ends 25 years later.

Holy crap, it looks fantastic! Did the HD Texture pack correct the lost transparencies on the main menu, or was that something else? I am trying to get it to run on Retro Arch on a Retroid Pocket 2s and NOTHING will get those damn transparencies to work!!
I patched rom with Camera mod, it has different CRC which broke the texture pack, there is "real crc tool"... so would I be able to return it to the original? Is there a way to make the mod work with the texture pack?
