This is the best VC17 how to video I've seen. Great job at showing step by step procedures, complete with all the little helpful hints! You have produced and published a great public service!

So glad I found this just now. I’m headed to the shop to wipe down my boat and apply three coats of VC17m. I found a 23 foot sailboat with a pilothouse that I have been restoring over the last three years.

I found it more difficult to put the second and third coats on. It seemed like the previous coat was coming off it spots. Maybe because it was hard for me to not go back in forth with the roller like you do when painting a wall.

@@huntington46750 That shouldn't happen.... My boat had vc 17 on it when I bought it. I only use one coat and 2 coats on some areas.
If your VC 17 is 'coming off in spots' I would be more concerned about what is under the vc17. It is possible that someone painted the vc17 over something that is not compatible with vc17. Painting more layers of vc17 may not help. If you already multiple coats of VC 17, I would see what happens when you take the boat out of the water. If the VC 17 is still coming off I would sand the areas down to gel coat. You may need a barrier coat before you apply vc 17.

I've painted my bottom twice, using these instructions, and I'm about to do it the third time.
The one thing I've found, other than using canning jar funnels, is that if you wear glasses you can have inserts made for your full face respirator.

Great Idea of the glass jar... I do the same with all my paints and varnish, especially when storing excess. I would however recommend not to use a screwdriver to open the paint can, it will never reseal properly.

When using VC-17 you should never shake the can prior to use. Stir it and stir it. Otherwise it will have bubbles. Also when mixing the copper in always wear a respirator. You do not want to breathe any copper dust. Use ultra fine foam rollers and always paint on longways. From stern to bow or bow to stern. Water is going by the hull and you don’t want paint lines to slow you down. I’ve used this product for 20 years on multiple boats. VC should be applied once a year or no more than every two years. You must always be careful when scrubbing the bottom as this stuff will scrub right off. I generally use a plain bathroom washcloth for cleaning the bottom. Nothing aggressive to scrub the bottom. The night before you paint turn the cans upside down so the settling Teflon in the bottom has a better chance of mixing. Otherwise good job. Looks like a fast bottom.

Thank your for the comment. I typically always wear my respirator when I mix the copper. I didn't in the video because the wind was blowing away from me and I wanted to talk, but in reality I should have worn it.
This was the first time I put the paint in a jar and shook it. I lost less paint to evaporation and I did not get any bubbles. As you know the paint is very thin. I use West Marine foam rollers, they seem to work well.
I read a HOW TO from Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago, they probably pain more VC 17 than anyone. They said to roll the paint in vertically going up. However, I see your logic in painting it horizontally.
Next year I will place my cans upside-down for a day or 2. That is good advice.
In the past I have cleaned my bottom with a scrub brush mid year, now I will use a wash cloth. Thank you for that tip.
I am not sure why you said you should not apply vc 17 more than every 2 years. I do it every year. I use a scuff pad before I apply it. I attempted to sand it because I thought it was building up, but after many years, the pain was still so thin that I sanded right through it.
Thank you again for the advice and the comment. I plan to make more videos soon.

I just put a new VC bottom on my 30 footer. Pulled it out yesterday cleaned the bottom sanded a few little hard crunchies off and painted it it’s pretty much done now and it’s probably going back in the water tomorrow. I generally just wipe the bottom down with soft towels and water. Using acetone to wipe it down I think will take a lot of the underlying paint off which you don’t want to do. You actually want it to build up as it’s very thin. Also in my last reply I’m pretty sure I said it should be done once a year and no longer than every two years. Good video. I think you’ve shown what a great bottom painting system VC 17 is. Keep it up and I look forward to more vids.

@@dvd1329no Thank you for the comment. You may be right that acetone takes too much paint off. I am just in the habit of using acetone to clean before I paint. I just started working on more videos. It just takes a ridiculous amount of time to make each video.

@@sonofneptunesailing917 Hello , hope you are still reading these . SO I just bought a 35ft sailboat moored in the Med. Last owner had it for 30 years and advised me that he'd always used VC 17 - I was wondering why you said you wouldn't use it in warm salt water ?? I didn't get chance to lift her out this Autumn so I haven't seen the hull but photos of last time she was painted look as good as your finished job . IS VC17 special in that you shouldn't need to sand the hull before painting- just wipe clean with acetate ( or not if it removes too much as in one of the comments ) ?? It will be my first job when I get down to her in Spring and I'll be pushed for time so want to be as prepared as possible .

@@RayKeighley I have no experience with anything in salt water. I have heard that VC 17m is only appropriate in salt water for boats that are launched for a day then put back on a trailer.
My best advice wound to contact Interlux and ask what salt water paint wound be compatible with VC17m.
