I remember everyone waiting for Thriller to be shown on MTV! MJ was 5 years older than me, so he was always doing something exciting whether with the Jackson 5, or on his own since I could remember. We all knew he was something special! This entire video is what we saw first, then they cut it down for dance clubs, etc. We used to do the Thriller dance at clubs when it first came out, then when Halloween would come it was on everywhere for years. I miss those days, they were the best of my youth! I watch This version of Thriller every year around Halloween at least 5 times. So glad we got this version to 1 BILLION this year! It is now WAY OVER a Billion! I miss Michael being in the World, he was the best! MJ and his father in law Elvis, are my favorites. Thank you for this reaction!
Fun fact: The director for this video had also done American Werewolf in London and that's why Jackson got him. So John Landis also got Rick Baker to do the effects. If you compare, the sounds used in Jackson's transformation were from American Werewolf's iconic transformation scene. Even the growling and screams were from it as well. Truly epic. Jackson was definitely smart to get Landis to do it.
Great reaction! I was in 7th grade when this video premiered, and we did have a watch party waiting for it. The statement at the beginning about his religious beliefs was because he was a Jehovah's Witness, and his religion was very important to him. It has nothing to do with the 80s. The infamous jacket is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His daughter, Paris, has worn an extra. I loved her response when asked where she got the jacket. She said 'From my Daddys closet." I'm so glad I was an 80s teen!!
MJ was unquestionably an extraordinary talent. I wondered if you were going to note Landis and Quincy Jones-Michael didn’t spare anything in bringing in talent to craft this product. Something different: Leave Me Alone (Opens the door to a comparison with Paul Simon’s “Boy in the Bubble” which was done in the same animé style.) Come to think of it, you doing (an ocasional) A/B comparison might be a fun way to expand what you are doing. Whether it is two performances by the same artist, two performances of the same song or two completely different songs on a common element (style or theme or design). As two examples-and pardon the common group, it’s just an easy example: Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence With Pentatonix And with Disturbed (okay, A/B/C in this case) S&G’s Hazy Shade of Winter With The Bangles There are tons of others-I’m sure your subscribers could chime in with plenty of suggestions if this interested you, and I could easily come up with more.
I dunno. I can think of dozens of better videos. From ‘84 alone. And my friend Suzanne is in this one. For starters, there were 3 Prince videos that year.

You know, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson collaborated on a song/Music Video: “Say, Say, Say”
