My bees have calmed down so much since early spring. Went through all 9 hives with just a veil and a long sleeve shirt this weekend. I had to do a newspaper combine for a queenless hive and shake bees off a 3rd deep in a different hive to get to a double deep. Looked for new queens from hives that were split. No stings and no gloves and not a lot of smoke. It's fun when they are nice.
One of my hives was very similar - packed full of bees, thinking about swarming, and not happy to see me. 2 weeks ago I could work them bare handed......
They don't leave once the queen cell is capped. They say a few days before she emerges. That's why I like to go in every 7 to 10 days so I can catch them and make a split or cut them down.
They may be getting upset because they can't find the honey supers to store all that nectar. I had a problem last year with my gloves. They must have been smelling like venom from taking stings, every time I got near the hives they got defensive. I washed the gloves with a little bleach and soap and it seemed to work. They might have not liked you dispatching that queen cell either!
I definitely have a lot going on right now. I think they are pissed that they just filled a super and thought they had plenty for winter and then it was gone. She is still getting it done so they will have to wait to raise a new queen for now.
Hi Brian. I’m sharing a link to a new Demaree video to prevent swarming from Black Mountain Honey. Your hive could benefit ? As I mentioned earlier I have 2 hives in progress with a Demarree . It took about a month to refill the brood box with brood. Mean time all the earlier brood has hatched out in the top deep. It is a massive hive, and swarming issues went away. My girls are the same way. I caught a swarm this year. I get stung everytime and so does anyone around
They are usually nice and calm but not the past 2 weeks. They must know what I am up to. Haha
