USP, University of São Paulo, has their campus right next to the polluted Pinheiros river. And besides that it is quite the forested place, lots of grass and trees, a very green patch in an otherwise very gray city. There are loads of capybaras, capivaras in portuguese, they mostly stay behind some fences which are there to make sure they don’t wander into the road, but there are so many. There are no predators, and they just be chilling in front of overworked university students.

Hystricognant rodents arrived in South America from Africa around 40 million years ago in a single dispersal rafting event and the distance between the two continents was a third of what it is today. Once they got there, they discovered vacant ecological niches and diversified rapidly. A prehistoric capybara was the size of a hippo, making it the largest rodent that ever lived. Think of capybaras as giant guinea pigs and you’re not too far off about them.
