So I've actually spent a lot of time stripping these headlights apart to make them addressable. If you're doing this kind of mod swerve using thermal paste. It isn't going to harden enough to secure your boards, more just solidify a little. You definitely need thermal paste which dries almost like a silicon, this is what they use from factory and without any you'll inefficiently transfer heat from the ally based pcb's to the actual heatsink. You also need to make some marks where the oem boards sat precisely, the light guides that butt onto these boards need to align with every led chip available otherwise you'll get less light.
I’ve learned from the comments that I shoulve used thermal glue, so definitely will if I do this again. These DRL’s won’t be permanent though, so I don’t think they’ll burn out. I’ll be switching back and forth from my white ones occasionally

Suggestion for the paste is use a single line then spread it across the metal evenly then it will dissipate the heat properly, I would be wary about running jbweld since it’s not going to dissipate heat like thermal paste and can cause the drl to prematurely fail.
We use thermal paste a lot in computers so would highly recommend using it if that’s what they say to use for the install

The whole point of BMW attaching that aluminum piece to the board with the OEM paste (similar to the Corsair you initially used) is to dissipate the large amount of heat those LEDs produce. It may fail early because JB isn't intended to transfer heat like a thermal paste. But hopefully it does work, it looks sick.

Thermal paste isn't an adhesive so that's why it doesn't harden. For anyone watching if you're going to use a thermal paste make sure its a thermal adhesive or conductive glue. Probably easier to just use the J-B Kwik like you did in the end.

I don’t have to make any tuning staff. After 70 000km my head lights in my 2017 F34 are yellow and to fix it my autorised service station advise my to change a whole head lamp which is 2000$ per each. So, I could exchange mine with some one who is looking for some tuning staff😂😂. What a world. I know it could be a whole head lamp but there could be a 150$ module, too, and some raid on in which you could remove by quick grind. But yours is awsome. Greeting from Warsaw, Poland. Michał

Not sure w xenons, but if you go to the aliexpress vendors page, they have the colored modules for f30’s. I would suggest messaging them and seeing if they would work with your car, my guess is they probably will 🙏🏽

I believe they make it for the 8 series but I’m not 100% sure. They should have more colors than yellow. Check the forums or the Facebook bmw pages

If you follow the link, I believe the 4 series DRL’s will work for your car! Confirm with the vendor, but that’s what I’ve been told
I just noticed one of my passenger side OEM drl is starting to fade. Can I buy an oem color and do it the same way?
Yeah you can buy new DRL white modules and test that first. Sometimes I’ve seen the actual LED itself is fading so that may be why. In that rare case, replacing headlight is the only fix
Not in your video but did you have to pull your bumper off and pull the headlight units out?
Yeah you have to because there’s two t30 bolts holding in the headlight to the body that you need to unscrew to get them out

They have a RGB one which will allow you to have any color you want, but I heard it throws a code on your dash & requires extra wire harness during install

Thermal paste does not harden. It’s purpose is to improve heat transfer between two metal surfaces.

wonder what the rgb one looks like ?
The RGB kit is totally different, it doesn't use the OEM board design and leaves you having to run separate wires outside of the headlight into their controller. You also can't make a perfect white, it'll be slightly blue. I only know as I spent a while with their kit and ended up making my own addressable kit instead.

100% brightness burns out the tube on the headlights. Not recommended at all. Ask me how I know.

Oh man that thermal paste lmfao, aside from the fact that it’s not an adhesive that part that really makes me cringe (in an OCD kinda way) is how much you put on lol obviously you didn’t know better but thermal paste only needs a tiny amount, like a drop the size of a pea.
Next time I recommend find a “thermal glue”, looks fantastic btw

Two wires on top, pretty simple, not rocket science after you undo the three t20’s
RGB modules have been out for 3-4+ YEARS now. I think it's hilarious people are starting to pick up on it now because the CSL yellow came out 😂. RGB ones can do any color and change modes and its controllable through app on your phone.
@bensbimmer was one of the first to install these.
Back then I paid around $400 for the set but glad to see it got a lot cheaper.
I remember when Ben and InkedCustoms did it to their f8x, looked super sick! And right 😂 crazy how trends get picked up years later
