Good points, I came here at 50 yo and now 67 and only got my pensions at 55 & 66 yo. Now life is very comfortable despite quite a drop in exchange rates over the years. You should have mentioned health care and insurance. Being admitted to Thai hospitals can be a costly business and you certainly learn a lot.
I developed heart issues in my early 60's but the treatment was excellent. All is good now.

Thanks for this Richie. For now I am sticking to the snowbird thing and coming to Thailand from December to April/May and back to the US for the summers and fall. But the 4 month trial I just did this year was enough to convince me that I can live in Thailand but I will keep the option of the snowbird schedule because that works for me for now. Your advice is solid and very much on point and very much appreciated. My best to Maybelle and best of luck with the your renovation! Can't wait to see it in person when I come down from Chiang Mai for a few weeks to get out of smokey season up there! 😵‍💫

I came here on a family visa, wife and a little daughter. Have my daughter to take care of, when she's in kindergarden it's motorbike riding or guitarplaying, or gaming. Great video, Richie. I’d say if you want to move here, then bring more money than you think you will need (it’s expensive since the Russian influx - particularly for condos/villas), get a visa agent if you can afford one & be VERY careful on the roads. Regarding pets - we bought our cat from the U.K. & she settled really well. See you in the garden soon! ☀️

I'd say having regular income coming in is up there at the top. I've known countless people who would love to have stayed in thailand but unfortunately have run out of money. Personally, I wouldn't sell assets that produce income back home, particularly your house. That's a no-no. In my opinion, it appreciates with time and produces regular income. Great list thou I'd agree desire is paramount 🙂

Regarding the money (all you need is money) that's not entirely true.
There is something more important than money, it is your health. Take care of yourself.
Eat healthier food as much as you can, don't drink often, exercise if possible, simply be more active, go for walks.
The older you get the more it is important to be active. Strength resistance training is the only "cure" for aging.
If your body is falling apart no amount of money will help you.
Take care of your body first and only after think about these other 7 things Richie is talking about.

Just an idea to give you an income when u reach retirement age so you have money coming in, you could make voluntary class 2 national insurance payments in the U.K. as a self employed person living and working abroad. It only costs about £165 per year and will get you a full pension when you reach retirement age.

  • @philliproberts7294

Thanks Richie I can only speak about Australian old age pension it's only about 1800AUD a month it wouldn't go far in Phuket that about 40k baht that's enough if you don't drink or pay for entrainment but even then you have to worry about centerlink cutting you off every couple of years so they can update your file and make sure your information is true and correct the more I think about it the more I think going to Thailand for long holidays then home for a few months then back to Thailand that way we can escape the unbearable heat and humidity of April May June

    • @GazGuitarz
      @GazGuitarz Рік тому

For those on the Australian disability pension, things are even more dismal! It pays practically the same amount of money as the old age pension, however unlike old age pensioners, disability pensioners are only "allowed" to leave the country and travel overseas for a mere 28 days every 12 months.
It's like making a pact with the Devil. Once he has his pitchfork in you he owns you body and soul.
Even if you are travelling to Thailand for their excellent and very affordable (compared to Australian prices) Health Care Services, It's still only 28 days. If the medical procedure or treatment is likely to take longer than 28 days, the pensioner is required to front up at the Spanish (Centrelink) Inquisition's HQ to be re-evaluated by the Chief Inquisitor and re-examined by the Inquisition's official expert in witch finding and torture!
If they think you're a witch say goodbye to affordable health treatment. If you're really lucky and don't float when they dunk you in the Centrelink dunking sewer, the inquisition may deem you to be innocent and therefore possibly eligible to travel for longer than 28 days a year and receive that life-saving operation and recovery treatment you dreamt of.
Of course the pensioner can always bypass the Inquisition if they are willing to tell Centrelink to get stuffed and sacrifice their disability pension.
Ultimately, if a disability pensioner cherishes his freedom and Right to leave the country and travel as they please, then the last option is the most desirable, but unfortunately requires an independent income or wads of cash in the bank.
      Beers and Cheers!

agree, retired there in Kata in 2012, with a substantial investment portfolio in Australia, but quickly wittled it away, lost money on a really nice condo in Kata, when i decided to move back to Australia ( should have rented in Kata ), now on an Australian single pension, and it would not be enough to survive in Phuket or Chiang Mai, better to make long holidays in Thailand.

Now a little pedantic rant about visas. You are not on a marriage visa. You are on marriage extension. This is an extension of the visa you first entered Thailand and found a way to extend year on year, eg marriage, retirement, work permit, school, etc.. i myself have been extending for 26 years on the back of a permit on arrival, ie a 30 day stay stamp.

You really hit the nail on the head when you speak about how having money changes a person's experience in Thailand. I loved my time living and working in Thailand, though I prefer my experience as a tourist today over the financial struggles from the past.

My drunk Uncle Saul would make us sit while he gave us advice on life … marriage, cheater wives, jobs, beer vs whiskey, military service, how to avoid whores, claps and STIs😅 I was about 8 yrs and my brothers 11 and 3. He was hilarious, … repeating himself over and over, … and there was always some payoff which he had us wait for, which was something so ridiculously, patently obvious … that we just rolled on the floor for hours laughing … until he finally passed out on the sofa, often pissing himself in the end. We loved his drunken visits and I miss him to this day … until now🤣😂😁 … Number Seven … “YOU NEED MONEY, LOTS OF MONEY.” Really? … 🤣. Well now I am all set … I need a Visa and money … Thank you Cousin Saul … I mean Cousin Rich🙏🏽
Just finish your beer and go to the bathroom … proper🤣😂😆

Money is the second most important thing in moving abroad. Health is number one cause without it, you've got nothing.
There's no point in being a millionaire if you're bedridden or have severe illness and can't leave the home! Money can be made anytime but health is non negotiable. 👍😯
