    I like how the Blondie members interrupt the interview not once, but twice. First to call Jerry a fucking liar, and second to call him a wine snob.

    I would have expected this from any of the Devo guys, but it's... unusual to hear such colorful rock life stories told so matter of factly with any hint of a bragging or embellishing tone.

    I was at that Houston show at the Cullen Auditorium in ‘82. Rumor has it that some rich kid judge’s son with law enforcement connections went to the lobby to piss or something, and then couldn’t get back inside because it was so packed in there, so he called the HPD and the Fire Dept to bust up the show. He probably just had his panties in a bunch because they wouldn’t play ‘Whip It’ over and over. It was very confusing, because yes... as Gerry pointed out, the cops were backstage, or side-stage or whatever... and none of us could see them, so we had no idea what was really going on. It was hot as fuck in there and overcrowded. However, all those “fuck you’s”, as I recall, weren’t being directed at DEVO. We were telling security to fuck off, because they cut the lights and were yelling at us that the gig was cancelled and we were all going to have to go home. The crowd was already pretty amped up, and when they pulled Gerry off the stage a riot almost broke out, and then when we got outside we saw all the cop cars and fire trucks. The next day it was on the news - “DEVO arrested for overbooking show”, and one of the local papers even had a picture of DEVO in shackles.

    • @LetsGoMetsGo33
      @LetsGoMetsGo33 6 років тому +3

      Lol, actually, he was known as "Elvis Ramone". I wish more of that story was known. Johnny said it was Clem's playing, but like Olaf said, he is great. They only gave him a few days to prepare for his first gig with them, I would think it would take more time than that to develop stamina for their live show (it's physically, though not at all technically, challenging). I have to guess it was about money. They would have to pay Clem more than they would like to pay their drummer, perhaps.

    • @Tuning_Spork
      @Tuning_Spork 6 років тому +2

      Johnny said they had to part with "Elvis" because he couldn't keep up. Clem said it was the hardest he'd ever worked and was exhausted after the show. So, they called Marky who, luckily, had cleaned up his act and was ready to rock.

      @chrisnemec5644 10 років тому +1

      Well, according to one account, the guards repeatedly asked the band to sing "Whip It" loudly all night long. The thugs didn't like that too much. There's actually an interview with Mark that was done the next day for a Houston TV station. It's here on UA-cam, search around for it.

    • @Brewzerr
      @Brewzerr 6 років тому +1

      Who really knows? All I know is that Houston was a really scary city back in those days. On any given night if you were in the holding tank, you were going to be amongst some serious psychos, thugs, and violent creeps. The cops back then weren’t much different than the criminals. I was at that show, and once we heard that they were actually in jail and being booked... we knew it was going to be bad. I guess nothing serious happened. Just a lot of harassment and no sleep. The fucked part is that apparently the whole reason the cops even showed up, is because some rich kid judge’s son had daddy call in the calvalry... all because he got up to piss and couldn’t get back into the show.

    • @Brewzerr
      @Brewzerr 6 років тому +1

      Chris Nemec - Are you referring to that ‘82 interview he gave with Showtime, where he mainly talks about the Church of the Sub-Genius and it’s ‘god’... Bob? I think that interview was actually conducted in Dallas (where the CoTSG is based), shortly after their Houston jail fracas... but he never discusses what actually happened that night in the HPD holding tank.
