Amtrak Blows The Doors Off CSX Train at 80 MPH

- Sit back and watch as this very fast Amtrak train blows the doors off a CSX train as it passes it going 80 miles per hour. Leave a comment and a like. And subscribe to wide world of trains on UA-cam
From what I could find online, an Amtrak car is 85 feet long. There are 13 cars and 2 engines. If we go with 425 yards total length, it should take about 11 seconds for the train to pass the cameraman. It looks like it passes in about 11 seconds. It's going close to 80 mph.
Great points
Based on a single car (1013 inches long) and counting the frames, I get 23 frames. The video is 30 FPS.
So with 23 frames, and then going up one and down one just for clarity, it actually comes out to at least 93 MPH
24 frames = 93.8 MPH
23 frames = 98.0 MPH
22 frames = 102.4 MPH
I think people are upset because of how long it is and non-cinematic it is. The nature of these trains is that they're big, so they kinda look like they're going slower than they are. It also doesn't help that this is top down from a bridge, as well as with a telescopic lens head-on.
I won't disagree that it wasn't exciting, but jeez.
Engines are almost 70 ft x 2= 140ft and took 1.5 seconds to travel the shadow. So about 64 mph.
Definitely too 11 seconds to pass the camera man
I was measuring the shadow time of the first two engines, not the whole train. Is every passenger car 85 feet and did he include the engine length in the time.
Was I the only one waiting for a door to fall off?
I certainly was lol
Yes
I know right, total clickbate.

Long way off
@@richardmccann4815 it's going at 59-62mph.
When the video started I thought it was a tongue and cheek comment and it was a typo - meant to be 8 mph!
It was zoomed in
Metric line cant go faster...
Worked as a Conductor on BNSF for years. Trust me, CSX is going about 20 mph at best and Amtrak is moving around 30 mph - 35 mph. If there’s any doubt, simply look at the cattle catcher and find a shadow on the ground. Watch how long it takes CSX to reach the shadow across the rail.
ya.... thats not 80
35-45...
.
i live on the "hi line" and watch them MOVE out here in NE montana flat lands
.
that whole train would be past in about 2 seconds if it was at 80
.
.
and sometimes they run a little "hotter" than 80 out here.....
.
ive heard stories of 90+!!!!
Yea and the fact that the CSX can only go as fast as the slowest car is rated for while Amtrak is set always unless track demands it at 60+
Maybe out in the middle of nowhere no crossings. The Saluda NC to Hendersonville NC no longer active never got over 10 mph in 15 Miles of track.
EXACTLY!!!!!! Look at the shadows compared to the train speed. NO WAY 80!
I agree, if AT was doing 80, he would have zoomed past CSX.
80 mph? I'll never get those 30 seconds back🤨
Agree
something tells me you've probably wasted a few years on pointless youtube videos
In Michigan where I live, the trains go to 110mph and they would completely fly past everything (it passes my in a blink of an eye). The issue is a lot of the track is shared by slow cargo trains so certain spots are limited to 40mph
The speed in the video is obviously 30-40mph
This looks pretty close to 80.
@@zackbobby5550That doesnt even look close to 80mph
No doors were harmed during the filming of this video.

Fun fact : CSX is renting Amtrak the tracks it’s running on
Fun fact: CSX is required to do so by law, because otherwise they just wouldn't.
Warren Buffet is renting the track.
Who didn’t know tht😂
@@jamalwest7168 My dog
fun fact: this is the world's stupidest model of railroad that causes unnecessary financial troubles and delays for the passenger trains. In every other country in the world, passenger trains are given priority over the freight trains, the American way is quite idiotic
Welcome to the 1930's folks. Meanwhile other countries actually invest in thier rail transit infrastructure and have real high speed rail. 😳
Our rail tranist was better in the 30’s sadly
Some good news...
Amtrak received $66 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill:
• $22 billion is dedicated directly to the agency for fleet upgrades and other systemwide improvements:
- $6 billion goes to the Northeast Corridor
- $16 billion to state-supported railways
• The remaining $44 billion to go towards the Federal Railroad Administration, which will hand out the money in grants to various state agencies for upgrades to intercity railway
That's more money than Amtrak has received in its entire history. The infrastructure bill has also provided enough funding for Amtrak to replace its entire fleet, including long distance trains and Northeast regionals. New Acelas will also be rolled out in 2023.
@@dc2guy2 I doubt any of that will go toward actual speed or electrification improvements.

After seeing lots of comments about this. I just noticed that blood splatter There. Whatever it had hit, R.I.P.
Freight trains, like the one with those containers, are usually restricted to lower speeds due to the sheer amount of weight, and therefore momentum, involved. Remember, you have to somehow stop the train as required.
Naw don't you know that a semi can stop faster than a car because it has more brakes. So with that logic ( actually in a state hand book for driver's ed) a train has lot's of brake it can stop so fast it actually goes backwards 😂😂😂😂
Then why do I see intermodal trains out here in Iowa do almost 70-80 MPH?
Plus it is just physics that such heavy objects can’t go as fast
We call that a wheelchair race
Except that trains are extremely heavy so it actually makes sense that they go slow
Agreed! 😂
Legend has it that it is STILL blowing the doors off that CSX 😮
Yep because that CSX super-freighter is guessing 1 to 2 miles long LOL.
"It doesn’t LOOK like it is going 80 mph"
Congratulations, you just discovered Speed-Size Illusion
How the tracks are close together and no side swipe each other, Amazing!
The CSX is pulling way more weight than the Amtrak. Of course he's going to pass it.
Also, neither train was doing anywhere close to 80. I've been rail fanning for years and an amtrack doing 60 was faster than this amtrack
The Amtrak eases by that CSX like an old man eases into a hot tub of water
And the Amtrak train is still late

So I'm not the only one that noticed that.

Maybe the blood came from a guard on the battlements of the Castle it had run over earlier on further back up the rail track .
If I didn’t know WWOT well enough I’d guess this is satire…
But unfortunately, he either truly believes this train, which others have correctly estimated to be going about 30-35 mph, is actually going 80, or he simply does not care about misleading viewers.
Just a small weight difference in those trains....
Hell compare these to British locomotives, They are very heavy, and Bigger than what the British have.

@@DistanceNsVeterans cope. Japanese trains are elite
The CSX is pulling freight vs Amtrak who is pulling passengers. It's recommended to go at slower speeds with freight.
Riding Amtrak cross country is on my bucket list
Love how it looks like the Amtrak is kind of creeping up on the CSX at first, like “Hey, whatcha doin there? Hey. Hey.” And then as soon as the locomotive is able to pass, it picks up speed enough for it to reach nearly 80 mph by the time it reaches the bridge
Rode amtrak all around the country and either passing a freight in the same or opposite direction or a freight passing us....is always a prayer moment. The trains being that close...smh.
Amtrak not pulling 5,000 trailing tons
In Germany we call this "Langsamfahrstelle" when the train can only go 80 mph
Well, when you have a tiny country with a quarter the US population paying half their income in taxes and all your mountains on one edge of it, it isn’t hard to build-out a high-speed rail system.

"WANNA DRAG?" Said The AmtrakTrain
Damn, Amtrak blows the doors of a CSX on their own tracks, though? Wow, lmao!
This is that illusory effect, where a large object coming at you seems to be moving a LOT slower than it ACTUALLY IS.
Yes true A bird moving at the same speed would seem to be a lot faster
You are a person who doesn't know what this is. This is no race. The momentum of the freight train ( if you've ever worked on the railroad- which you haven't) must stay moving. So it is allowing itself to slow roll. It takes forever to start that train from a dead start. It's probably over a mile long. Then the passenger train passes it at that speed before the siding that that freight train is in comes to end. After the pass the switch it must go through is thrown and the CSX goes back to speed. Which can be 80mph.
The Amtrack was going faster than the freight, but it was not doing anywhere close to 80. More like 30 or 40.
CSX: How do u go u so fast?🙄
Amtrak: This is normal, u are just too slow.😏
Crept up on him and snuck past ! (SIDLED RIGHT BY!)
The remarkable thing is that the Amtrak is probably at least 45 minutes behind schedule thanks to being caught behind freight traffic.
When American trains start traveling as fast as French or Japanese ones, then come back and tell us about “fast.”
LOL
A plane is twice as fast as both
@@seanthe100 that's right, but the additional time you need at the airport (safety checks, luggage) won't give you a time advantage over just a couple of hundred miles if you have high speed trains as an alternative where you can just sit in.
On longer distances of course the airliner will always be faster
Don't set the bar unrealisticly high.
Let them do like Sweden, Finland or Switzerland, that would be a massive improvement already.
You mean most of Europe and Japan?
I'm glad the doors where closed and not blown off for real,
No doors were blown off. We've been bamboozled

i love these 1:1 scale model trains
Only a North American could regard that as fast.

Amtrak racing with csx
Now make the race fair and have the Blackbird fly against the Amtrak and then we will for sure see some train doors fly off !!!!
50 at best lol
100% because at 80 on that curve would have tipped the train.
The camera was super zoomed in and made the curve look small
Awesome Amtrak and CSX race!
Freight owns the track Amtrak pulls over for Freight buy airline ticket.
Thats your typical “priority train sequencing “ . When the trains are input into the CAD, the computer system will recognize the train by its designation and the system literally takes over keeping in mind this is an automated “CTC” centralized traffic system “ that csx has been installing and upgrading for years……any track any time and any direction……ms~~~
I really like the part where the freight trains "doors come off".
EXPRESS COMIN' THROUGH!! 🚂🚃🚃🚃
US rail regulations stipulate that freight trains can only run at 60MPH on any stretch of rail that will allow high speed, this dose not affect Amtrak passenger trains which are allowed to run as fast as the rail line and conditions can handle, so this is no surprise.
Love the Conrail caboose.... you don't see cabooses anymore, let alone a Conrail paint scheme.
Brings back memories of my father with conrail

It's very satisfying to look afar and the train looks like it's going slow on camera but when it gets closer and you zoom out its very epic

Hey, I know it looks like they are barely moving but it’s because he’s zoomed all the way in and because you can hear him walking so it gives the impression they are barely moving. However, if you watch the shadows on the Amtrak train, your eyes will be convinced it’s moving at a respectable speed.

Nowhere near 80mph, 45-50 tops. Look at it.
Oh hey, Silver Star, eh? Make sure that Amtrak doesn't go on CSX'S track.
Here we can see the Amtrak Monocoque Diesel in its natural habitat. Here it seeks its prey, the CSX Intermodal. Crikey! The P42DC blows the door off of the CSX Diesel.
CSX be like: Comon man why did you do that for?
Was up to 109mph on the NYC to Rensselaer run along the Hudson this summer. Had to make up time after a 30 minute stop due to line repair following heavy rains. Fastest I have ever travelled on the ground in any capacity. Smooth ride though, couldn't tell except for everything whizzing by so fast.
Oh wow!
I didn’t think so either until I did the math. Standard car is about 80 feet long, there are 15 total cars. It takes about 10 seconds nose to tail to pass. It’s traveling about 120ft per second which is right at 80mph. Even being off 10% puts it at like 74 mph-close enough for govt work!
Thanks
When amtrak get mad Because always delayed by a Freight Train
The number of people who don't understand this actually is 80mph is EXACTLY why people still get hit by trains
At a distance head on, this large of an object seems stationary, but if the camera man had been beside the tracks the speed would have been much more clear.
Regardless, that train actually is going 80 ish, there's another commenter who did a great job breaking down the math.
Just like the moon. It looks like it's still but it's actually going 2200 miles per hour.
Yall clearly didn't watch the whole thing of him going underneath the cameraman. He was actually doing pretty close to 80. When a camera is zoomed in like that naturally your perspective of it is going to seem slow. Have you never looked up at the sky and seen a plane 30 thousand feet above you look like it was barely moving? Even though he's probably doing upwards of 350mph? Really use your brain people lol
You make valid points.
