Playing this opera and this piece in particular is definitely the highlight of my orchestral career... when the orchestra drops and the choral continues-- it gets me every time!
This ALWAYS makes me BURST out in tears....Partially cos my Garden is f*****! Lolol. But every hair on my body stands on end and the tears just roll. What exquisite writing....and this an earth shattering performance. THANK you.
@@robertmacfarlane8988 Really hard, but so worth it! (as so much music is!) I crewed a show just recently for a choir and orchestra that performed this. Even from the wings, youtube DOES NOT by any means do this piece justice!
@@ryano.5149 Worth it, for sure! And you are right about hearing it live. Recall struggling with the nuances in 'Three Coins In the Fountain' in 4 part (all male). But when you GET IT RIGHT!
Within context of the entire opera, it makes complete sense. And I would think it was also meant to pull you out of it. Just to f*ck with the audience one last time.

+Aristeidis Tsialos I'm so glad that he's come back to the Proms with new songs as i'd been listening to the same songs from his previous appearances on the Proms.
Lot's a comments on this site about the male lead, but what about the female lead? Is it Barbara Cook? She's great. She hasn't the natural timbre of Susan Boyle but her voice soars.
Barbara Cook. The late Ms Cook would have been 88 when this concert was staged! No, it's Scarlett Strallen who performed in Candid in a terrific small scale production at London's award winning Menier Chocolate Factory.
One of the most moving operatic finales. Tenor never stops moving his head and eyes. Obviously not an actor, and this is a concert performance, but this could have done with a director!
Very similar to "Luke & Leía Theme" (The first five notes of the melody) by John Williams. This musical theme was used in Star Wars Episode III. "The Return of Jedi".
This is a fine performance - as the Proms should be - but the most perfect I have found was a "staged concert" a few years earlier in NYC. New York Philharmonic, Conductor: Marin Alsop, starring Paul Groves and Kristin Chenoweth. Groves couples a magnificent voice with a bumptious boyishness and Chenoweth IS Cunegonde!! 4'10 and a powerhouse coloratura! The entire performance is also posted on UA-cam - a national treasure. The vocal clarity from itty bitty Kristin down to the full chorus is amazing.
The problem wit that semi-staged production was the poor direction; the comedy was ladled on so thick it drained the life out of the bitter sweet show.
Exactly. I am a first generation immigrant and after 36 years in US I came to the conclusion that the finale of Candida “And make our garden grow” is much deeper and truer to the American spirit than “Oh, say, can you see”.
This is a great performance overall, although I would not be inclined to cast Julian Ovenden, whom I almost always adore as Candide. He is too much baritone and not enough really free tenor to do full justice to the role. John Wilson makes magic with what ever he conducts with his orchestra.
The tenor has a pleasant voice, but not nearly the power and depth of timbre for this ensemble. Watch the Gold Standard--Jerry Hadley and June Anderson. The Soprano also is too light/lyrical for this Verdiesque finale.
what... I hope they all love it in there live watching. here... listening... I was afraid if my parents ask me to shut down my computer.... I think they're over-power? And, when the orchestra was off, it made more uncomfortable to listen it. Sorry.
+Aurora Esterlia This is an unusual song, only familiar with one tune from 'Candide' not this song, the lyrics are almost laughable, but i will listen to almost anything Julian Ovenden sings, except his 2 cds, just don't like them, as he is not a crooner like Frank Sinatra, but sings these songs from Broadway musicals.
gossamerwings have you understood the lyrics yet? I love it them. And in the face of such a bad year as 2016 it's nice to think we can make own own lives strong while the world goes mad around us.
This is the most boring and lifeless version of this that I've ever heard and I didn't think that was possible for such a wonderful song. What a disappointment.
what would like them to have done to make it less boring....dance? use jazz hands? I've seen 8 or 9 live versions of candide, including new york city opera and broadway - and everyone just stands there and sings this amazing finale. the music and lyrics speak for themselves.

So inspiring "We're neither pure nor wise nor good, we'll do the best we know"
A trick: watch series at KaldroStream. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Orlando Aiden Yea, I've been watching on kaldroStream for months myself :D
wow - this is of the two top versions I've ever heard(and I've heard lots of them). the part where the orchestra drops out was AMAZING!!!!!
Every so often I search this out, it's breathtaking, and I am moved every time I listen. Saw it performed at Symphony Hall. Fantastic!
Oh God, do I miss Lenny! But I'm so grateful for all he's left behind for us.
This ALWAYS makes me BURST out in tears....Partially cos my Garden is f*****! Lolol. But every hair on my body stands on end and the tears just roll. What exquisite writing....and this an earth shattering performance. THANK you.
There are certain pieces of music that invariably bring me to tears. This is one of them. I want it sung at my memorial service.
Wow what a performance! The orchestration under maestro John Wilson just gorgeous!
I could watch and listen to Julian all day! Sigh....so beautiful!
Chills! This is one of the most perfect bundles of talent ever caught on film! 😵
Lucky enough to hear Julien Ovenden sing this at Symphony Hall in Birmingham at a concert a few years ago. What a fantastic finale to a musical!
Bernstein’s Masterpiece 💜
Love Julian Ovenden. Beautiful voice.
So beautiful... The song... the singers... the orchestra... awesome... everything was perfect
I sang this in a chorus. It is REALLY HARD. They did a superb job!

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Thank you, John Wilson!
Simply stunning!

Happy Birthday,Leonard Bernstein.
Julian Ovenden 😍
Wow and wow .....
Best ending of a musical, second is Sunday In the Park With George. The best 1st act ending is A Weekend In the Country from A Little Night Music.
“A Little Priest” & “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” are right up there!!!
"One Day More" and "Till We Reach that Day" aren't too shabby.
“Any questions?” - no. No more questions.
Julien from Downton Abbey! What a voice and so handsome. I wonder if the opening notes inspired “ The Great Mandala” by PP&M.
You've been a fool and so have i
But come I'll be your wife
And let us try before we die
To make some sense of life
We're neither pure nor wise nor good
We'll do the best we know
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow
And make our garden grow
I thought the world was sugar cake
For so our master said
But now I'll teach my hands to bake
Our loaf of daily bread
We're neither pure nor wise nor good
We'll do the best we know
We'll build house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow
And make our garden grow
Let dreamers dream what worlds they please
Those edens can't be found
The sweetest flowers
The fairest trees
Are grown in solid ground
We're neither pure nor wise nor good
We'll do the best we know
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow
And make our garden grow
Dreams keep us alive. Hope gives us legs. Let my garden grow. ❤😂😅
Julian Ovenden is my new crush
Me too, and I'm not gay!
I bet you could show him what to do with his arms.
Bernstein at his very best
Wonderful.
Thanks for the beautyful song!!!!!♡!!

How can one not melt…
This is great! But sometimes I watch the BBC Proms and think that Julian Ovenden is the only tenor in the UK, not that I'm complaining
+Aristeidis Tsialos This is his first prom concert since 2012

Aristeidis Tsialos 😂 true! I love Julian O forever but do wonder about other tenors in bbc
check out vintage Fleming Hadley and Co. doing this one.
Learn what a tenor is, honey.
Fantastic song, beautiful melody and lyrics, wonderful orchestral scoring - so so singers.
Yeah the female soloist's intonation... Oof
this is a certified banger 🔥🔥🔥
I love that the endiing is sort of Maria and it makes me crazy
Love that high d on the trumpet in the finale
mike lovatt!
I’m positive 90% of the people complaining about the singers are mediocre themselves.
A very nice rendering, but the late Jerry Hadley is still the Olympus.
WOW!!
I love Streisand singing this
It's really a shame that most orchestras give much priority to baroque, classic and romantic periods over more modern composers.
I wish someone would teach Julian Ovenden what to do with his arms!!!
yeah ... wrap them around me!
He should sing "What Do I Do with My Hands" over and over until he gets it!
Lot's a comments on this site about the male lead, but what about the female lead? Is it Barbara Cook? She's great. She hasn't the natural timbre of Susan Boyle but her voice soars.

Funny. I’ve seen him often on British TV, most recently as the doomed son of Inspector Foyle on the excellent “Foyle’s War.”
Very similar to "Luke & Leía Theme" (The first five notes of the melody) by John Williams. This musical theme was used in Star Wars Episode III. "The Return of Jedi".
Most of John Williams music is very similar to someone else's.
Yo how are some people complaining about the Tenor’s voice?
James Boyle because it’s not that great
Julian Ovenden is unic

Does anyone else hear pieces of Luke and Leia by John Williams in this piece?
