Also, non forehand natural side spin serves when they come on the forehand and when they come on the backhand side. With the (spin) explanations of why it is to be done this way for both scenarios. That would be the best and conclusive video on UA-cam about the matter. I watched all of them and not a single one does it in that systematic way! Looking forward!

I have heard different answers which make me confused. Is there a difference between top spin and back spin? I really like the tactics part you have mentioned here and in your match analyzing videos. 👍👍👍Since videos talk about tactics out there on youtube aren’t really complete. Maybe you can make video about : 1.What you should do facing a new opponent?(How to try things out in the first set? How to set up your tactics after knowing your opponent’s weaknesses? etc) 2.What to do when facing attacker/ left hander/defensive player?
The spin on the ball will always decrease as time passes so I want to say after the peak on the fall has less spin, backspin will have substantially less because the spin is grabbing the table and trying to go the opposite direction, and topspin is the complete opposite. (Very good question). Also those are really, really good ideas to put into new videos thanks for the ideas I’ll make one about that in the future 👍👍
So now I finally can see how pros return illegal serves. Those serves behind the body or blocked by arm are totally illegal. The umpires should call them but most of the time they don't. But somehow the pros seem to be able to return them.
Hey, great video! Do I get it right, ...the opponent serves, you decided for a strategy before, for example 50/50, then you move a little to the right near the middle of the table, and return. So serve return is a strategy part of the game? That is cool news...or I misunderstood...because of my English? I think I saw it in games, like you want 90% forehand, you step left, you stand on the left foot, so even the ball comes to the deep forehand side, you can push yourself over... Maybe you can do a next video on that "covering the table" thing, with yourself demonstrating? Just an idea! I always thought that the movement always was a reaction to the serve ...like the best possible decision to answer the serve.
Hi! yes serve return is a big strategy part of the game! Most of the time top level players are looking to return a serve in a specific way based on what they think the opponent will do, however this does not mean if the opponent does something different that they are unprepared. They have the ability to adjust and make a good reaction return. For example if you are looking to flip their serve and they serve medium long to your forehand you see that and adjust quickly and loop. Your return strategy is constantly evolving due to your opponents attempts to gain advantage with their serve.
You can look at the flight of the ball, if it floats or acts like an airplane it has backspin if it hops like a bunny then it has topspin, but very important that you wait for the second bounce to see the flight if it has no spin then it will not fly like a plane or hop like a bunny but something in-between
The guy needs to eat, many players play this way because they feel they cannot win without it, is it right no, at the end of the day they get away with it most of the time.
There's something very wrong with this sport (though I do like to play). No wonder world cup and other big events have very few spectators- the players are encouraged to cheat! I cannot think of another pro sport that has this attitude, that "hey, players need to eat".@@PechPongTT

Dear Seth, great videos! Could you explain why sometimes during a pushing rally, especially when it start with sidespin serve, the ball flys out to the side of the table. I have no problem receiving the first one, but after a few chops it becomes confusing and before I notice it the side spin just take over. Thanks!
the first two minutes could be cut with nothing lost. You might consider scripting the vids. A skill tree and exercises might be nice as well as example footage of good and bad form. How to identify form issues might also be a nice topic

Thanks for sharing. Some good take aways. 'A game of memory' I love that. It would be great to learn more about what can be done when you cannot read the spin. My sight is not great and cannot be corrected by glasses. I rely mainly on watching the point of contact as cannot see the logo on the ball particularly when rotating fast. The only other cues I use are; habits of the server, ie. what do they like to do most. The trajectory of the ball. Also, I find If the server does a high toss it tends to be top spin or week under spin at best (for club level players). So currently I use the above as ways to take an educated guess. I know there is not a silver bullet for this, but wonder if there are some techniques that could work for both under spin and side spin, ie. coming around the side of he ball? Would love to see a video dedicated to this topic. Not seen anything on UA-cam yet. Thanks again.
Hello! Those where really interesting methods to think about serve return in absence of sharp vision. I have experimented with reading the bounce of the ball very much I put a cardboard wall and a small slit at the bottom so the ball could be serves but the motion could be hidden behind the wall. I practiced watching the bounce to see if it hops like a bunny(topspin) or floats like an airplane(underspin) or somewhere in between sidespin or dead that was a nice practice that helped me a lot maybe I should put that in a video sometime

(your forehand naturally points to the left, if side spin came to forehand would the natural angle put the ball on the table or would it go flying off "unnatural"

Yeah serve return skill is super important! I feel you can improve a lot by having a partner serve a bucket of balls and oscillate between two or three serves and you work on your desired receive for each so I become habit
@@PechPongTT Robot for me, Im the top of the food chain at our club so all I have is lower level players to work with. I have one or two that I do some things with or I go to Fremont as I did sunday for the leaque(80 miles one way)...I just made a rubber change and it has transformed my game over night...no more Tenergy for me I went through 3 sheets and over a year of training the control is out of control at least for me.
If you can locate where the ball will be and wait for it and then touch it you will have more control. Many players go at or more forward to touch the ball and end up adding unwanted energy to the ball

Maybe you could explain a bit more on returning service by following spin ( natural return ? compared with opposing the spin ? I sometimes seem to see the pros seemingly return a service with a racket face angle that would eat the spin and go off to the side but actually does not
So if you go against the spin you need to angle the racket away from where the ball wants to shoot off to, if you go with the spin you don’t have to angle it away as much. It is possible to go with the spin slightly with the angle that goes against the spin many pros do this and this kind of return has a lot of potential to keep the ball short because the player doesn’t have to do either drastically the problem is that it doesn’t work against underspins because it kills the energy so well
@rcarioca Try this exercise. Throw the ball up then slice your racket as the ball is falling down to make heavy spin in one direction. Notice the ball flies straight up. As the ball falls down, slice it again in the same direction as it falls down. Notice it is much easier to have the ball fly straight up again even with heavy spin. Now try the second slice in a different direction. Notice it is still possible if your slice is so strong that it overwrites the original spin, otherwise, the ball goes and to the direction of the spin. Also, notice if you don’t slice it, it’s just going to bounce off horribly to the side.
I keep finding that when I force myself to sort of abide by rules for returning in terms of how I contact with regard to the spin and also where I stand, I only make it harder on myself. Its cool to see that it is less hard and fast conditional rules for returning than I had thought, and that maybe being more creative and doing what I feel is best in the moment is ideal. Unlike tennis, which I learned first, where most of the time you should do what the better plays do every time, as there is much more variety in pro TT as you just demonstrated
Yeah I think for every return there can be some structure to get the most out of the shot, and against the right person or the right time of the match a certain return may work well, it comes down to doing returns that don’t ruin other parts of your game and also optimize your results that usually stick, I think building a large bank of feelings and returns can come in handy but at first to have initial success finding simple returns that you can move in and out of seamlessly are the ones that should be used.
This is very useful, thanks. As I am a pretty low standard player, playing in the WOS league 2nd/3rd division, do a video on how the trick of working out what's coming to you 😉. When I come across players from our first div, I simply don't know what spin is on the ball sometimes 😂
@@PechPongTT I suspect this is more down to practice. I have a few good shots, and I can catch the ball pretty sweetly at times. That's 1-0 in my division. But, when I play against someone who's seen my best shot thousands of time, it's a 1/10 success rate 😂. I presume the same goes for serving and receiving a serve 👍
@@psircos it’s similar, but I feel that there are certain things you can look for in each serve variation (forehand serves, scoop serve, reverse serve) that will make it easier to receive if focused on.
@@PechPongTT Thanks for putting out this kind of content. Let the ball come is the most important thing, its so easy to just lift an underspin ball if you do it. My forehand flick has gone up 1000 levels. The feeling improves with that as well and i love that feeling when the spin does everything for you, and not your brute force. This way would simplify the whole thing and would overcome all the hustle to read the spin and so on. This is an example of what I meant. What do you think?
@@stfuplznoname unfortunately there are no shortcuts, the best thing you can probably do is find a return that you like for all serves and use them whenever the player does that serve, truls is very good at this, harimotto as well he flips most serves and truls cuts most serves unless it’s topspin. Watch them carefully and you will see that they have their favorite returns and use them a lot!

What is the best way to return heavy back spin by inverted rubber and anti spin rubber with Long Pimple, I use Grass
Basically states that the last 2 serve types are illegal: off-arm in front of hitting the ball, and Par Gerell's serves ("behind the body".)

What do u mean balls come to u?

this is the hardest part of the game, But i am determined to give you the knowledge I have and find new knowledge and pass it on!

I learned so much and my worst trait serve return got to one of my strongest.

@@PechPongTT Thanks for putting out this kind of content. Let the ball come is the most important thing, its so easy to just lift an underspin ball if you do it. My forehand flick has gone up 1000 levels. The feeling improves with that as well and i love that feeling when the spin does everything for you, and not your brute force. Hey. It’s me again. Your biggest fan from Germany. Is there a simplified way to the with/against/forehand natural/backhand natural spins?
I tried my best to make it simple!! Haha anymore and it would take away the good information 😬
@@PechPongTT I see. I meant something like a simplified approach for it. For example: top spinning everything unless it’s short under spin for example. This way would simplify the whole thing and would overcome all the hustle to read the spin and so on. This is an example of what I meant. What do you think?
@@stfuplznoname unfortunately there are no shortcuts, the best thing you can probably do is find a return that you like for all serves and use them whenever the player does that serve, truls is very good at this, harimotto as well he flips most serves and truls cuts most serves unless it’s topspin. Watch them carefully and you will see that they have their favorite returns and use them a lot!
