  • Silliman University was initially established by American missionaries in 1901, originally serving as an elementary school for boys. Over time, it prospered and gradually evolved, eventually attaining university status in 1938. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the university, converting it into a military garrison, which led to the evacuation of both faculty and students.Amidst these trying circumstances, some of the evacuees took measures to safeguard equipment and sustain university operations in the mountainous regions of Negros Oriental. In 1945, following the liberation of the Philippines by American and Filipino forces, the university was freed from Japanese occupation. In the post-war period, Silliman University transitioned from American to Filipino management. This change occurred shortly after World War II, when Dr. Ruiz assumed the role of university president in 1953.
