Philippines in the late 50s and early 60s was beginning to become a progressive country. Let it be a lesson to all countries, that corruption and incompetent leaders will destroy a nation. A very good example is the Philippines where corrupt and incompetent leaders govern the nation to poverty and economic disaster. Thanks for sharing your wonderful short video.
It was Marcos who destroyed our country. The Philippines was one of the ten countries with booming economies in Asia in 1950 to 60s. When Marcos took the presidency in January 1966, it was the beginning of the collapse of the Philippine Economy.
No, it was cory. Ang daming adik at squatter ngayon. Mga walang displina, kriminal, at mahihirap. Think about it. Ito ba ang pamana ng demokrasya? Whats the sense
Marcos was kicked out of the presidency bcos of the poverty he inflicted to the Filipinos. Before Cory Aquino became President, the PH Government was already bankrupt and the GDP was NEGATIVE. And Cory was not a Wonder Woman to do magic then.

I just want to say thank you to the people of the Philippines for saving my father's life and that of his men during WWII when they were out of rations due to a Japanese attack. Very good people!
My Tata was one of those people, he was later granted citizenship to the US and for that I can’t thank him enough. Our family had 32 hectares of land which was stolen easily through corruption, 3rd party militias used to roam and target my relatives because of money. But during WWII my Tata didn’t realize his life would change. He not only saved several US military men, he also assisted the Igorot tribe in taking down the Japanese, he watched them decapitate the Japanese with their headhunting axes. No matter what, Filipinos still find a way to survive, no matter how harsh of a life they go through. I appreciate my Tata so much, if it wasn’t for his heroism we would not be living the life we have today.
Why filipinos are so cringe?
My Grandfather was a Filipino soldier in World War 2. He walked along side Fellow Filipino Soldiers and Americans during the "Death March".
He managed to escape and survived it. I was wondering, if he didn't got away, I may not be here right now. Sadly, he passed away in 1976 before I was born(1978). So I didn't get to meet him.. but my mother always talks about him.

My grandparents were in their 20s during this time. The Philippines in the 1950s always reflected the United States in the 50s as well - progressing and innovating - yet preserved its old world aesthetics, customs and attitudes. Its no surprise this is also considered the country's Golden Era.

@Kazumaf Well actually, the Philippine GDP rised up significantly during PNoy’s time. And no, I’m not gonna deny the fact that PNoy administration did a shit job on many aspects in connection to the Filipino poor, especially the handling of Yolanda victims. I’m just saying he’s not really the perfect definition of “incompetent”. Duterte on the other hand, yeah.

This was the time when Filipinos knew each other, helped each other, and collaborated. Life of the filipino featured in this video is very, very familiar to me. Means of livelihood is agricultural. Fishing is mostly the source of food with vegetables grown in the backyard. Life was very simple. There was no roads connecting to other towns. No vices, no drugs, no syndicated crimes & people know each other even in far flung barrios. Parents tried their best for the education of their children. Many became professionals & it changed the life of the filipino family. Politicians in those days became rich who engaged in logging who easily got forest concession. Americans were also in logging harvesting the old grown forest trees. I watched all of this the passing of years since my birth in 1947.
I was born 1959, life in our place, probinsiya was simple and food was abundant. How I wish those days would be back

This video just saddens me a lot. I might be a millennial, but I truly know how far the Philippines fell. A continuous streak of bad politicians has lead to the destruction of these beautiful lands and caused suffering to its people. If only our leaders abandon their strong ego's then maybe, just maybe, our country might rise once more.
The idea that he said that English was used in government, education and in markets. Well not now cause their dreams of using a national language has become a reality
I am currently 19 years old and from Mindanao Philippines, it's just sad to say that the "barrio life" that is shown here is no longer a thing, kids nowadays hold phones, gadgets and other stuff, the streets used to fill with kids playing games such as "tumbang lata" and other mini games, to say I think my generation was the last generation to ever experience the so called "barrio life", me and my friends used to climb trees to get fruits, going to mountains to sight seeing, and other fun stuff, but sadly those things are over and modern life is consuming most of the culture.
Simple life is gone since the coming of inetrnet and cellphones. Back then, barkadas were more like brothers n sisters, electric fan is a luxury. Nowadays, youngsters have their own world...virtual world...and even slum areas have their own airconditioning unit.
And government corruption

0:46 "densed forest cover over half of this tropical nation."
That was in 1959!
But when the Americans arrived in 1890, the country was over 90% covered by forest. After the WW2, the parity rights (Bell Trade Act of 1946) given to Americans had allowed them to cut more hard wood trees and by time they completely left in 1974, the forest was denuded to only 30% had remained.

Imagine the air quality in Manila in the 1950s! I really hope that leadership have thought longer term and is preparing to deal with health issues associated with constant exposure to the air of one of the most polluted cities in the world. Plus the significant increase in obesity (and amongst the poor with limited resources to afford good medical care) and the health issues associated with that. People will often say that "ohh what could've been". But here's the thing, we can't change what happened. I know it's easy to wish for a time machine and change one little thing in our history that we think will have the best change for our country. And it's easy to lose hope either. We will never know what it was truly like unless we have seen it for ourselves, even those who did will think differently of each other just like how we are now. Different opinions, different beliefs, different ways of thinking. We all want what's best for our country, and that's what our leaders tried to do.. emphasis on "tried". Still so many struggle with English in the Philippines. But by far better than many other Asian countries
It's really fascinating to see how beautifully our country was presented, but now we could now see how the little issues the narrator pointed out grew into huge social problems in the future
10:00 This is how the Philippines lost 50% of its forest reserves in a few decades. Forests were never replanted. Many of the wood exported decades ago still sit in warehouses in Japan to build Japanese architecture that people from around the world travel to see. Total logging ban in the 90s is why you barely see wood in our country today.
10:32 As it was back then, until today, everything gravitated around and was dependent on Imperial Manila. Manila connected us to the world, but also marginalized the rest of the country. 12:12 For generations the 'Filipino dream' was to live in Manila. We failed to distribute development throughout the country, there were no other major cities outside Manila until recently. Now Manila is the rectum of the world.
12:00 Cool jeeps, great symbol of our resourcefulness. 60 years later, nothing changed, and most of them are smoke-belching metal coffins. Modern alternatives are so difficult to implement because it would put the jeep industry out of work. Now a great symbol of our inability to innovate.
4:15 Our once-praised western democracy led to a culture of uneducated and misinformed voting where people no longer see the benefits of the democratic process.
4:36 The Filipinos are well-off. We aren't an inherently poor nation, we failed to keep up with progress and innovation. Many of the agricultural methods (and jeeps) shown are literally the same as it is today. We became too comfortable with our 2nd place in Asia.
