Anyone else coming back to listen to this for the 50th time? Or am I the only one? Hands down one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. **EDIT:** Make that 100. I cannot help myself. I get goosebumps EVERY TIME. There are no words.
The underlying bass support is amazing ... never intrusive but strong ... contrasted with the women's voices, it just resonates. I must have listened 20 times to this already and it never gets old.
I have no idea why, but when she sings "I'm seldom drunk, though I'm never sober / A handsome rover from town to town" it feels so mournful it makes my heart clench.
I am reminded of a saying my father told me when I was a young boy: "For God hath made the Celts mad, for all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad"
To be exact, it's "For the great Gaels of Ireland/are the men that God made mad;/ For all their wars are merry / and all their songs are sad." As D.S. says, it's Chesterton. :)

the "Lead" singer, Sibeal, of whom you speak is not a regular member of Voces8 but a soloist who specializes in this style of music. Voces8 in their own right are so amazing. They don't really have a "lead" singer and they swap out the melody in many of their pieces. Listen to "May It Be" and "Lux Aeterna (Nimrod)" to hear their sound without Sibeal. It's surreal.
This is beyond beautiful. Voces8 should do an entire album of Irish songs with Sibéal. I would love them to do the bilingual version of ' Mná na hÉireann' together. Kate Bush, an English woman with an Irish mother, sang a much lauded totally Irish version of this song many years ago. I think an even more beautiful version awaits.
we still find Celtic traces in Poland. Mounds, jewels, burials... you name it. Poland was their long stop before moving further west. This could be the reason.... when I was in Ireland I felt at home anywhere I went, from Dublin to Galway :-)
I cry with emotion every time I hear this version, it transports to another world. Thank you Sibeal and Voces8 for being so huge, everyone. Immense greetings from Argentina!!! 🇦🇷🇦🇷
O I wish I was back in wonderful Ireland, The land of a thousand smiles and a nature that is so beautiful! To the Irish people: May the road rise to meet you, may the wind always be at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
This simply displays my ignorance. Being trained as a barbershopper, it kinda drove me nuts; I was thinking "for the love of all that's good, just hit the note!". Well, this realization just added to the beauty. Thanks!
I know no better way of helping me lower high shoulders and stress than listening to this beautiful music performed buy so skilled voices! I keep going back to watch/listen to this often, and it keeps fresh and makes me feel relaxed and hopeful for the world. I mean, a world containing this can´t be going all the way to hell ;-)
I'm in love with her voice. Especially at 3:20 they way she sings "from town to town". I wish I knew someone who could sing like that, but the search goes on
Visit one of the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) districts of Ireland where this style of singing, Sean Nos is practised. I couldn't guarantee you'd find anyone as good as Sibeal but you will find lots of potential candidates. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaeltacht
This is one of the most balanced singing groups I have ever heard. Each individual singer could probably do a solo album (SATB... doesn't matter) and be a hit. They blend superbly and if you hear something stand out, it's because they intended it to do so. I don't know who the music director is, but he or she is a master.
With her exquisite voice and haunting, lilting style, Sibeal sings absolutely beautifully and VOCES8 fits around her like a gorgeous velvet glove. What a combined sound!
Wonderful performance, Sibéal! Having VOCES8 as "background choir", how awesome is that? But in this case, I think they can feel honoured too, and it looks like they do!

Wow, her talent is top-notch!! She's super young and sounds THIS amazing, imagine what she'll be like as her voice matures. I'm so freaking excited for her future career.
Without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking songs I’ve heard in years. I love how simply it was presented and sung, and how richly the arrangement treated the chords. Soloist style is not like anything I’ve heard and perfect for this arrangement. That final bass note in the final chord melts me to the floor. I’ll listen to this again and again. Thank you!

I really can't stop coming back to this beautiful harmony. Albeit an understatement, what a phenomenal performance.
I've come to the conclusion that Gaelic is the most beautiful language, especially when sung, Not even Italian can beat it.
Whenever I see one notification from Voces 8 it's an invitation like: "Hey, wanna cry a lil bit?"
Totally agree.
For this song, it's more like, "Hey, wanna cry a whole lot?"
Yesss
Oh yes, I understand.
I know right😂😂😂😂
Is it just me or does the soloist have one of the most unique, distinct voices ever?
Who is she?
@@jordanhoyle577 She’s called Sibéal. She sings traditional Irish folk. Search her her UA-cam, there’s lots for her.
As well as being stunningly beautiful.
@@jordanhoyle577 Her name can be thought of as a Celtic version of "Isabelle."
It is Sean-nós, a traditional Irish singing style. Dolores O'Riordan, the singer of The Cranberries, used that as well.
Beautiful.... If they don't play this at my funeral, I'm not going...
Oh that's adorable, lol I always say I'd avoid going to mine if I could!
That down-glissando in the end is absolute perfection.
"But the sea is deep love
And I can't swim over"
Crushes me every time.
Celtic language changes the entire emotion of the music. When music finds "home", there is no better sound and your heart knows it has arrived
The underlying bass support is amazing ... never intrusive but strong ... contrasted with the women's voices, it just resonates. I must have listened 20 times to this already and it never gets old.
Oh, Yes... and the seemingly altered chord at the end is delicious for we jazz cats....
I have no idea why, but when she sings "I'm seldom drunk, though I'm never sober / A handsome rover from town to town" it feels so mournful it makes my heart clench.

How the heck did the soloist mimic the warbling tones of the uillean pipes so beautifully?!?
