Question: Is it the lack of grains that are causing these dogs illnesses? Or is it all the other crap that they use to substitute for grain?

    • @mitchiruy

so far the investigation is leading that grain free is being poor on things that dogs need from resources of meat. some of the grain free is like vegetables only and that is a no no.
in my case my dog developed food allergy to corn which is being used indiscrimenatlely. So currently I'm finishing the bag of kibbles from HIlls that has corn on the first 3 ingredientes but mising it with chicken broth (chicken, rice and carrots, no other ingredients) and when I finish it, switching it to the wet version that does not have corn at all. I have other that was suppose to help her with her stomach, but that ones is is basically corn, corn stuff, corn stuff in the first 3 ingredientes I just dropped that to trash. Seems she is kinda okay with rice and barley. but still her food has to have meat in it.

It's hard to believe that would be the only contributor to the problem, sounds like the Hills and Purina are looking to reclaim the market share more than anything since they came out with their own grain free versions of kibble, why would they if it's apparently so bad and causing problems?
DCM is often breed specific so if your dog has a higher chance of getting it I'd say be cautious, but nothing is ever black or white.
Personally, grain free Acana + raw and home cooked seems to work for us, all allergies and gut issues have cleared up for my doggo since incorporating living foods.

After long term studies, grain free food affects certain breeds the most by them developing this heart disease.
I say certain breeds in particular because my concern is mutts.
How do we know if it affects our dogs if we don't know their exact breed heritage.

Although I'm not a fan of those Vet reccomended diets.
Hill's Science diet alone had more recalls than natural balance and Purina combined.
Merrick had been the best for me so for, but I add grains, and I cook for my dog about 10% of the time, with added grains.
I've seen improvement in her stool, allergies, and happiness.
I raised her since she was 5 days old, I know this pup. She's 3 now.

Dogs would eat grains in the wild! Not a lot, partially digested grains from killed animals that do eat grains. Such as rabbits, rats, chickens etc. But just not a lot!
Which grain? Defenately not wheat! But oats. Oats are simply amazing. My dogs being fed barf, get an oatmeal, once or twice per forthnight. Soak the rolled oats for 5-10 min in hot water. When soft, tip water out, add full cream fresh milk, 2-3 egg yolks, 1-2 tblsp natural yoghurt, one teaspoon of olive oil, to fortyfigh the milk and voila you got a healthy grain meal.

Actual scientific LONG term studies can't be determined until after 15-20 years of research, and even beyond that can come more side effects.
So ultimately, because grain free food is such a new thing on the market (even if its 10yrs old its considered new for long term studies), we cannot ultimately determine all accurate side effects or consequences of diets or even drugs, this goes for human pharmaceuticals too.
We will continue to learn new information as time goes on, and I do believe we may find things that will shock some pet owners and make them change their minds about their pets diets and lifestyles, at least I hope so.

@@F19_33 This is so true! It is crazy how everyone is jumping the gun about grain free foods and how they “cause DCM”. Hopefully we can get some actually data on the subject. All that it is right now is a theory. The whole FDA study was backed by Purina, and majority of the dogs they studied were already prone to DCM due to genetics. Also, majority of the dogs they studied were golden retrievers who are also more prone to DCM.

My 7 year old male Samoyed was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy last week. His energy levels had plummeted over several months. He had been fed grain free Orijen since we adopted him when he was one. The vet told us to immediately cease grain free and has him on heart meds and other supplements. If you google "grain free dog diet FDA" you will find more information. We had thought we were doing more for our baby and gladly paid more for this premium food. Crushed at the moment and hoping for the best.

I feed one of my dogs with a barf diet, should I maybe add some grains to the mix?

My dog had terrible seasonal/skin allergies, burning itchy ears and she was very miserable, I tried different kibble and results were negligible but her poop was a horror to scoop on kibble with grain,
she does do better on grain free overall if I were to compare kibble with rice, wheat, corn.
Since May (5months now) I incorporated raw for her dinners(can't afford to go fully raw) + home cooked leftovers from whatever we eat (less the sauces, potatoes and starchy foods etc). I feed her cooked eggs and raw sardines, her skin has tightened (used to be very loose), coat is shiny and her energy levels are thru the roof, and her ears are no longer burning hot!
There is science in feeding dogs what they ate for centuries before getting their 'cereal' style brown morsels that's highly processed, stripped of its nutrition, Feed your dogs and cats as much real food as you can and watch them thrive.
Yes, I know there's no money in that for Purina - oh well 😉

I’d probably like to ask who is funding these studies? Iams? Purina?

    • @mellillaa4863
      @mellillaa4863 4 роки тому +8

absolutely there can be another explanation. people have to realize that there is no scientific evidence that dcm is caused by grain free, plus the entire original “study” was funded by purina when the makers of orijen and acana (considered the best kibble on the market) wouldn’t let purina buy them out. it’s a really bad situation because they’re scaring everyone when there’s no actual link between them. plus the legumes being used in the kibble are just for a binding agent to keep the kibbles together. so there is hardly any in there. hope this helps!

Doesn't make much sense if really think about it. Grain free dog food is simply dog food without grain ingredients in it. So to me, it sounds like because it is grain free, the dog food doesn't supply the dogs with that fiber or protein it would get if it was getting with grain based ingredients. So really all they would have to do, is add in some fiber and protein into their products to make up for the loss of grain nutrients that the dogs needs to stay healthily. Which makes me wonder why not just add a little meat into the product? It wouldn't give it fiber, but it would give it protein. As for the fiber, they could use vegies instead of grain. Which makes you wonder why they didn't do this in the first place. Why would they think its ok to take out grain but not make up for the loss of nutrients? Not just that, but why was it allowed to be sold knowing it was lacking those nutrients? Sounds like a lawsuit to me, I would not be surprised if many people sue the shit out of them for this. Not just because of the prices of the food, but for the damages caused to their pets.

  • @petergrant9259

The problem lies in kibble feeding day after day..year after year... Yes kibble need a statch to bind the mix into a long term solid piece ... all these companies entered the Pet Food business looking to feed higher protein dog diets, yet none subjected there food to AAFCO feed trial tests... instead they formulated their foods. Formulations need no testing to be sold in the USA... the reason Pro Plan can have what looks to be inferior ingredients and still give long life and superior nutrition is data... long term feeding trial tests... that measure urine, fecal, and blood-work...
If you fed an All Life Stage food that is feed trial tested, it means for a solid year it provided health for a dog ranging to a pup to a nursing Mom...
If the Fda wants to be involved...make it mandatory all diets are FEED TRIAL TESTED !

It’s only now that enough dogs have been fed grain free for long enough to see results.
So get a taurine supplement, add to your dog’s meals and sit tight and wait for better scientific answers. The taurine won’t do any harm as long as you dose according to instructions. And may well do a lot of good.

I have seen some of the WORST food allergies, and infected from licking paws, cured by feeding them good raw foods or homemade foods. If they mass market it in a grocery store, I would not buy it. Way to much profit from crap ingredients. If they want sixty dollars for a bag of dog food why the heck not just buy them some food with your own?

Thanks for the response! The margins on pet food and medications are slim to none nowadays, and my clinic carries very little food in stock because it's more expensive for it to sit there and take the time for my staff to account for it. I don't benefit from Hill's or Purina in any way. The chewy, Petsmarts, etc. of the world have practically eliminated this as a source of revenue for vets anyway. As far as our drugs, I had someone ask for a written prescription the other day so they could get it at a human pharmacy and the medication cost 4x what we could sell it for. There are a few animal specific drugs I wish were cheaper so I could help more pets, but I have no control over them as it's the suppliers who set prices. Also I don't know if you recall the Epipen or insulin crisis in human medicine recently, but human medicine has it worse in the world of drug markups because they know people must have these medications....it's sad.

Only if you really know what you're doing.
Don't cook for you pets at home without a vets advice and 100% confidence with a truly balanced diet for dogs or whatever pet you're cooking for. A dogs diet may be similar to ours but there's a lot people don't realize that dogs need certain things that we don't and vice versa. For just one example, bones. Bone broth or RAW bones are necessary for dogs and cats. Never ever ever feed cooked bones.

    • @F19_33
      @F19_33 3 роки тому

I would suggest just making your own bone broth. Buy meats for your dogs with bone in, instead of throwing away the bones boil them, don't cook the meat with the bone, cut it off the bone, cook the meat, then separately boils the bone to make a stock, remove and discard the bones and strain through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove impurities.
If you're interested in shopling big box stores, Merrick makes a great bone broth for dogs. Its kinda pricey, but making it at home can be work, and it has to be in their daily diet.

10 years ago, some dog food contained high quality grain and some contained low quality grain.
The low quality grain was so bad, that it even caused digestive problems and illnesses - in opposite to high quality grain.
Since then, alot of dog food manufacturers use the term "grain free".
However, there are still no regulations in place and you can still find dog food mixed with low quality grain, that contains pesticides, infestation and even mold.
You can also find dog food with high quality grain, that is very healthy for dogs - but normally its much more expensive, then the average dog food. Its the same grain, that is used for human food production. Low quality grain may not be used in human food production, at all.

Pets are like us, if genetics have a role then it's not going to change their propensity to certain illnesses.. we used to feed dogs as dogs in 1950's and they loved it &lived up near 20+... all the crap added to reduce costs have resulted in our pets dying younger.... I'm angry that they're not as protected like Children are... and yet for alot of people they are our furkids...
I'm giving my CHI pup lamb chops raw NO ONION and fruit plus brocolli and dry freeze treats made in Australia never China. He's healthy and happy..solid but not fat. I give Royal Canin puppy kibble only once a week and try very his foods by steaming chicken as well. I buy meat for humans only, never pet food as never know how fresh the meat was that was added...
If my dog refuses to eat something, I observe and won't feed it to him. They are intelligent and I've watched him nearly backflip at canned dog food so lol I never bought it again. Keep the diet varied and not just grain free or with grains. Like humans a varied diet is what i give .

I'd suggest a grain free food, and add your own grain like plain oats for example, and use it every other day, or every other feeding.
Grain does make them gain weight and depending on the breed could cause heart issues in the future. That's again why I suggest a personally maintained grain intake for your dog. Depending on their age, breed, weight, and activity level, grain should be monitored, as well as proteins and fats, especially for a puppy's transition into adulthood.
I personally think all dogs diets can be based off of their breeds. Not all dogs are just like wild wolves.
Although I'm not a vet, I've worked with animals my whole life, wild or domestic, but you can always learn something from someone. I always suggest a vets opinion, and maybe even more than one if you're concerned about your pet.

Hey Tou Fu Xiong, thanks for checking out the video! Purina, Hill's Science Diet, and Royal Canin are far from poor quality products. That being said, yes there are plenty of alternative diets which are just as acceptable out there in today's day and age. The only reason I mention those is that those are the diets I'm aware of how much research is behind them. There's absolutely no evidence they're poor (that being said I agree that Purina Dog Chow vs Purina Proplan is a huge difference). And I'm not blaming grain free food, currently the evidence points to "grain free, boutique, and exotic dog foods" as the culprit. Once we have a specific ingredient to blame we can go from there, but that's what the research is currently working toward. As for "lobbyists" I receive no money from these companies (or actually from my UA-cam channel at this time whatsoever...too small) nor do any veterinarians or vet schools that I know. The only thing I have ever received from these companies is a free dinner to hear what prescription diets they've released (I don't know about you but I wouldn't sell myself out to someone who just gave me free food). Also the term "by-product" is rather funny as there are plenty of "by-products" in other foods they just call them by names like heart, liver, kidney, etc. to make them sound more fancy and appropriate...those are actually all by-products. Anyway, I wish you and your pets the best, and am certainly not here to argue as I work very hard to only report the facts I'm aware of to both my clients and pet families everywhere! Thanks!

When i would make this I made sure to add more of this these then the other ingredients, so in the homemade canned food it consisted of organic pork, green bean, carrots, peas, 100% pure pumpkin, strawberries, wild blueberries, red and black raspberries, all of these ingredients are completely fine and healthy for your dog.
For whomever reads this theres probably the question as to why cant he have gain in dog food but can eat what we do without a problem. For instance he couldnt have beef in his food but I could cook a steak for him and nothing happened.
My guess would be the quality of what is being used, my vet whom I've trusted for years had a hard time figuring it out because it didnt add up but when I mentioned quality difference it made more sense.
All the brand that this guy has listed has been killing dogs for a long time and has many recalls, my dog food of choice is nutritious source, this brand is not a mass produced food, everything in is from the United states and it's the only one I trust.

The study was conducted on a relatively small number of dogs, and specific breeds were targeted. Golden Retrievers were one. Before you publish your opinions, it would be great if more vets actually looked into the science, so that pet owners like me, without medical backgrounds, could learn from your experience. Do you really think that I'm going to take your word for it based on your own personal opinions? It's unfortunate that more vets don't continue where their vet studies left off with nutrition. From what I understand, only a short amount of time and attention is invested in nutrition. Same with MD's. Ancient Wisdom: Food can either be the best medicine, or the worst poison. It's a travesty that our defunct Western medical model pays so little attention to nutrition. The cause is simple. The grain free does not give what dogs need to produce taurine.. if u insist on making your pet be your latest fad.. them at least give them a taurine supplement.. give them meat regularly.. even a taurine vitamin paste that's for ferrets.. but. The grain free food MUST be given to foxes. I know cuz I have one. But I give him mostly meat a bit of veggies .. and because he doesn't care for dogfood I have actually quit giving him dog food AT ALL.. few dogs actually have allergy to grain. It's usually more like chicken or maybe lamb. But for your dogs health. Stop believing grain free is good for your pet. It's NOT. give them a meat diet with a bit of veggies like carrots etc.
Why. It's KNOWN. unfortunately few vets seem to know the info.. dogs need taurine..just like cats do. SOME grain free that's VERY EXPENSIVE may HAVE taurine IN IT. and it WILL STATE it in ingredients. But simply put. Dogs make taurine. But if u feed grain free food it doesn't have the protein needed to produce the taurine. So if u r a vet. U REALLY should know this. Unfortunately FEW do. That's why so many dogs keep having to die.

    • @KrystalessR
      @KrystalessR 5 років тому +2

The conclusions you've drawn have no evidence. The extrusion temperatures these foods are cooked at destroy taurine, all foods cooked like this should be supplemented with taurine. Carbohydrates heavy foods, like Science Diet or Ol' Roy already had to add taurine because their carbohydrate levels are so high. Grain based foods don't necessarily have more protein, it depends on the line of food. A basic bag of Science Diet rice base has about 19% max protein. So, these foods have always added taurine. The newer ones have higher levels of protein so, nothing in AAFCO says they have to add taurine, unlike the carb heavy kibble.
Look for the word taurine in the ingredient list, if it's not there don't feed it, grain based or otherwise.

I spent WEEKS studying about it prior to paying over a grand for a domestic fox that has mutated color of pearl .
And the CAT FOOD that HAD TO BE GRAIN FREE ALSO DO NOT HAVE taurine UNLESS in ingredients..
If the foods HAVE TAURINE they WILL HAVE IT STATED.
The Exotic pet store I got the fox from and guy BREEDS foxes as well as a few of the exotic pets he sells has a bit more knowledge of the animals diets that he sells

I ended up mixing the grain free with my regular food for the puppy I got for him so it wouldn't be wasted ..

These all conditions that just "happen" to dogs are due to vaccinations and neutering/spaying a dog.
You inject chemicals in his body at a very young age and expect him to live well?
You chop off their body parts and when there is a hormonal disturbance you feed them hormones by pills? What kind of logic is that.
    Keep them as they are.
You should adjust to their lifestyle, they shouldn't adjust to yours.
Fresh food, ample space for playing and running around, and affection.
This is all that it takes for a dog to be fit and strong.
Those who doubt see a documentary on how nomad/Siberian dogs are very healthy. They eat all natural and be all natural.

Dogs are essentially scavengers, and as long as they don't get into something toxic they can be quite healthy on almost any diet provided it contains all the essential nutrients for dogs. And dietary requirements for cats and dogs are totally different.

Hi Joe, thanks for the input. I agree that some of their diets contain corn as a main ingredient, however they have plenty of options which do not. I can assure you I have no reason to represent these companies as I've never received compensation or any benefit from them in particular. If Orijen is working well for your dogs then fantastic! I wouldn't want to convince you otherwise, just giving my 2 cents for those who would ask. Wishing you and your pets the best!
