Many thanks, James. The song was composed in 1882 by James S. Putnam. He composed it in the key of A; The Spirits of Rhythm recorded it in the key of F; and Shake 'Em Up have gone for the key of C. Another new one in the ladies' repertoire. What a slick performance it is, from the neat 8-bar Introduction by Molly and Haruka, through the well-rehearsed, creamy vocal harmonising, Chloe's and Haruka's pretty solos, Julie's and Dizzy's amusing 2-bar breaks, Molly's solo against the rhythmic vocals, the chord-sliding Coda - all great stuff. What a band!
Each band member sang a song during the set. It was the first time I had heard Dizzy or Julie sing solo. Dizzy sang "Shine On Harvest Moon" and Julie sang a lovely song that I can't find the title of. I'll have to send it to you for some help.
@@JamesSterling do you have any inside info on that, James? Those girls have been around, and been admired, for a while. Did they finally gain the confidence or expertise to sing and play at the same time? Or did the others beat the crap out of them till they agreed to do it? Or what?
@@stewartfenton7660 I have no inside information on Shake Em Up but most of these bands are a collabortive effort with input from each member. Shaye will even tell you that she is not the leader of Tuba Skinny. Robin has told me that the band discusses among themselves what songs to add to their repetoire and basically take a vote. I will be posting the videos later of the other ladies from Shake Em Up singing.
@@JamesSterling once I again, I know that really. Bands like this are a fsr cry, thankfully, from outfits like those of James Brown, Van Morrison, Buddy Rich etc, autocracies run by people with possibly a high opinion of themselves. I couldn't imagine these current jazz people acting like that. Oh, dishonourable mention, Miles Davis, apparently Bob Dylan thinks the way he acts is cool, not for me it isn't.
Wow! Thank you James for this nice video. It‘s great to see and hear this lovely band again. I like the singing, especially that Julie and Dizzi are singing too!
I love the unique style of this band so much. Their ensemble singing is so awesome. All six women are brilliant singers too. They reminds me in their style on the. A capella groups in the 1950s like the Chordettes. I love this group too.
These wonderful musicians (who just happen to be ladies) are really building/establishing a unique legacy of terrific music. Great taste, creative solos, infectious swing, beautiful vocals….love it.
Well, I’ve never heard that one before. Thank you James for being there and recording this delightful performance- and to witness Julie singing! I’ve said it before that you do have the knack of being present when something interesting happens. An interesting comment from Stewart, he was most probably referring to Julie. On several occasions, she appeared to be overcome with shyness when Molly tried to cajole her into participating in a vocal. Maybe the ladies have been working on her. Well done and well done Julie - I love you even more! I have been off-line for a while and following the link to this performance was such a treat to see All the ladies back together again. I wonder, if Chloe is around NO for a while will they record another album.
I am not a resident of New Orleans, and I was not there on that day, contributing to the band and to the businesses in the city. That guy in the beard was probably doing both those things, and even if he wasn't- he has a perfect right to stand in front of Marla blocking my view of her. So I'm not complaining. Not much.
If possible I always get right in front of the band to avoid that (see my d.b.a. and Tuba Skinny at the Jackson Square stage) but in this case with the dance floor right in front of the band I could not. I am just another guy in the crowd and get no special privileges while recording.
@@JamesSterling James, I appreciate everything you do, and was certainly not getting at you, never occurred to me in fact. And really I wasn't getting at anyone, I have no right to, for one thing. Just letting my obsession with Marla run away with me again.

Thanks James! Great to see Chloe back in NOLA. Don't think I ever heard Dizzy and Julie singing before.
Each band member sang a solo that day, including Haruka.
@@JamesSterling we can hear them singlng on 'Shake sugaree'

Great group. I consider them one of the best traditional New Orleans Jazz Bands in existence.

As Woody Allen once said "90% of success in life is just showing up." And in my case the other 10% is remembering to turn on the camera.
We just recorded this!
It's always a "Great Day" when the Shake Em Up Jazz Band performs. I hope you didn't get drowned James!
My wife and I had just got something to eat at one of the food trucks when it hit. Even with umbrellas we were drenched before we could find shelter.
@@JamesSterling When it's raining like that an umbrella does little good. The main thing is that phone was kept high and dry!
