Boz Scaggs - Lowdown (Live-HQ)

- With the Steve Miller Band for their first two albums, Boz Scaggs carved out an inimitable niche for himself and soared on his own with many hits starting in the 70's.
"Lowdown" is a Billboard hit originally recorded in 1976 by Boz Scaggs for his mainstream-breakthrough album, Silk Degrees. The song was co-written by Scaggs and David Paich. Paich, along with fellow "Lowdown" session musicians David Hungate and Jeff Porcaro, would later help form the band Toto. The song's production, as well as Scaggs' laid-back vocal, gave "Lowdown" a smooth, Soul/Disco feel.

Back up singers often make the show sooooo much better.
This is indeed one of the anthems of the 70's... nobody can deny the talent on that stage either. Simply awesome. 😃
The bass line and drumming....soooooo damn good
Grew up in the 70's, I can guarantee you that if we were out cruising around and this song came on the radio even my head bangingest hard core rock n rollerz never changed the station when this KILLER song came on! Classic! 👊
So damn good. The smooth restraint ..no rushing, just keeping cool right up to the bridge ... and the bass line descending in half notes down to the turnaround...and suddenly we’re back at the top .... like walking down the canyon streets of New York in the wee hours of the morning, the air tingling with anticipation and possibility. Scaggs is a national treasure . He writes and performs so well, his band is deep in the pocket and his awesome backup singers helping him soothe our souls.
Wow ... Man you have captured His' essence!
Loved your review. Superb writing and understanding of what works in this classic. Boz really is that good. Miss Sun is another gem, but way underrated. He has written so many great songs. Indeed, a gift to modern
music.
I was working at Footlocker and this young white girl about 18 bought Silk Degrees for my birthday. Then later I bought the eight track tape and headed to LA with brother 5 years older. We went and picked my second oldest brother amd headed for Mexico.. We saw the blow hole by Ensenada.. Then we headed back across country to Phoenix, Az to a disco then Albuquerque to another disco.. Meanwhile on the highway we were playing the Silk Degrees album and Boogie Nights off the Heat Wave album ‘Too Hot to Handle..Great times traveling country in an old Ford truck with camper.. Remember those..LB May 2021
So so smooth; it's called good music, just in case you forgot what that is...
Well said.
you got that right!! you seem to know good music when you hear it (y) (y)
i got your back on good music this where its at..
Very rare these days!
SO fresh.
Some of the best backup singers in the business. Boz still has "it"
Amen; those gals r bringing the tunes...damn they're exquisite
Yeah they are good but The Babies had some great backup female singers too.
@@randyross2089 the background singers sound like they are from London.
Pink Floyd’s backup singers from the pulse tour were amazing as well.
Who are them? Whats their name
Now this is a good song no one will ever be able to be as smooth. His voice is so unique.
smooth like butter pecan ice cream in the summer
Precisely why this song is soooo damn GOOD!!
This isn't my favorite genre of music but this is sooooo melodic and beautiful!
Frog, but it sounds good
Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, YES, EL&P, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Santana, Chicago, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Elton John...and...,Boz Scaggs. A typical "rotation" for me during the 1970s! Rock on, Boz!!
I remember dancing in the clubs 70',s 💃🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿beat was smooth
Box Scaggs is still just amazing. I saw him a number of times back in the old days, but damn, he's still sounding great.
My girl and I made love every time this song played. Ask any one of our 83 children.......😅
So mellow, so relaxing… so wonderful.
Boz Scaggs is so smooth!
They just don’t make music like this anymore. He was so amazing as were his musicians and backup singers. No computerized sounds. All Natural.
Oh man, do I miss Jeff Porcaro's groove...God bless him,,
Damn, why can't they make more music like this. Everything about it is excellent. The funk, the lead vocals, the background instruments, the background singers. Great stuff
What can I say that hasn't already been said? I first saw Boz live in 2017 at the Melody Tent in Hyannis, Ma. opening for Michael MacDonald. He absolutely floored me! OMG!!! Where have I been. I was fortunate enough to see him again in concert at the same venue in 2018 and was blown away. I'm 72 years old and am totally in love with him! Trust me, grams can still rock out. His music reaches deep down into my soul and makes me remember the passion of our youth. Love you Boz and hope I see you again.
Wowwwww marvelous musicianship including back up vocals beautiful ladies..
A flute and a flugelhorn! Great combo!
SCAGGS IS PURE CLASS ....better now than ever...
Selwyn Katz ...He's in his 60's here! ( Born in 1944)...He's a Hall Of Famer in my book!
Mexican lucky by defpunk
.pharel and defpunks Mexican lucky
im just thinking to myself i wish i was there and would be damn proud of it..lol
The angels in the background make me........ OMG!!!!!!!!
I have never heard a live version sound so much like the original recording! And so many years later!!!
Actually thinking this is better! 💕
Same here.
I was a young (Black) Kid in the Hood when this came out in the mid 70s and we just KNEW this was a Black Dude:):) This song is sooooo funky it won an R&B Grammy. Which further fed my young ignorance thinking this was a Black Dude:)
It's good music, doesn't matter black or white (coming from a white guy). LOL
Totally agree LoraJ, I just love bragging on my ignorance (when it's funny),..and Good Music.
I can listen to Boz, Doobies (mostly with McDonald but I like some of their hits w/o him), Nicks, Henley, Mellencamp, Sting, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Journey (yes, them too:)), and George Michael (minus "Wake Me Up", I not one time liked that song:)),...allthelivelongday.
MarkAntney funny! would love to hear the story around what your reaction was when you learned he was a white guy! Boz Skaggs has been such a favorite if mine from a lifetime ago. I guess, since about age eleven years old? glad you shared that! :-)
Kelly,
Short Version (probably not when done) Buttt, in Elementary school (can't remember the grade/when) the song/singer came up and I/ME said it was a Black Dude for I heard it on Black Radio all the time (though in hindsight I conveniently FORGOT: "Bennie and the Jets"/Elton, "Sara Smile"/Hall and Oates, "Fame"/Bowie, "Queen of my Soul" and "Cut the Cake"/AWB, War (with and w/o Eddie Burton), 3 Dog Night, Wild Cherry, and several KC and the Sunshine Band hits played all the time on R&B radio at the time:)).
And since I was quite smart for my age at the time, OTHER (mostly Black but not all) idiots agreed with my MIT (Level) Expert Analysis.
Can't recall which (White) Student challenged my R&B Intellect but it started a mini Civil Rights Discussion:). When the teacher grew weary,...MR WHITE (true name, I swear) chimed in,
"Does it really matter if the singer was Black?" To my credit, I (and others) said "No, not really" but MR WHITE saw in our Stupid Little Faces, some form of closure was needed,..he then "Sighed" and said, "Since you have to know, he's White" I swear we all laughed!!! I own a ton of Boz in CDs and DVD.
MarkAntney Ha! I love it! "Black Radio" and Yang to its Yin, "White Radio" were really the terms we used in our collective vernacular until more recently, weren't they? Wow. We've come a long way towards more accurately naming genres (Hip Hop, Rock, R&B, etc.), and refreshingly less able to put people of any one color in any one box (think The Beastie Boys and Living Color, both of whom ROCK! Um, or is that uh...BUMP?!). ;-) Who cares, right?! All of the above for this lady, thank you very much! ;-)
EITHER way, music has been like air for me since pretty much the first day of my life. I haven't got a nanobit of musically creative talent (or for spatial direction, or eyeballing measurements, for that matter!), but had I been blessed with any, I'd have been inclined to learn guitar and piano. It turns out I WAS paying attention when appreciation for music was being passed out, and there's no shortage of supply to become skilled at that in this life, thankfully.
And, I'm not sure if it's true, but not too long ago I heard it said somewhere that music is the only thing that engages our entire brain at one time. I'm picturing a colorful PET scan film of a person's whole brain lit up while listening! Curiosity will insist I do some fact finding on this...
So thanks for sharing this in such a rich and funny way. It took me right back to that time in childhood when one by one the things we understood late in or first decade made way for more accurate realities and left us forever less innocent somehow. Often the peeling back of layers brought on by this natural progression of development were like a sad little loss. For certain, always impossible to unknow once we 'knew'. Some were just funny, like "...'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy!"! So thanks, Jimi! We all dig THAT one!
But I digress. I'm guessing that we're probably from similar times (I was born in '67) from the song we're talking about here. Love the visual of a teacher bringing in the jury for good on this white dude Boz Skaggs, huh?!
Wonder if any kids in your class that day got to go blow their friends out of the water by knowing he was white.
Cool points? Check!
I saw a lot of concerts when I was young in the 70's and 80's, I had no clue how fortunate I was to grow up with some of the best music in a century. Boz is an especially fond memory - he played for 2 hours and the time went by way too fast, it seemed like only 15 minutes. You just get lost in his smooth voice and those smooth bass licks. He could have played all night and sung us to sleep and that would have simply been heaven!!
Silk Degrees is a fabulous album. One of my favourites ever and brings all those teen memories flooding back. First time I heard this album I loved it so much and still do today.
Yes a fantastic album. I bought it when it came out, and still listen to it. Great music 🎶.
YEAH 77 WAS A GREAT YEAR HEARING LOW DOWN AND BOZ SCAGGS ON THE RADIO EVERYDAY!🎤🎶🎸🎼🌟🎵✨🎆
SOOOO SWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEETTT sounding. LOVE THE VINYL stilll 48 years later.
Splendid guitar! I wish that guitarist went on for hours
I think it's wonderful how people not even born or aware in the 1970s can instantly relate to and enjoy this quality music. An accolade on its own. Mr Cool was around way before today's Messrs Cool.
Doesn't get much cooler than this.
This guy has got class, style, and his music is laid-back and cool..... AND he writes his own songs......more than you can say for Elvis Presley....
true that!
Fabulous!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
What an incredible, impeccable rendition... Brings me back 40 some years ago when I was a young lad... Great times to be alive :-)
The entire album is awesome! One of my favorite, favorite albums!
I know his music but why am I just discovering this funky jazzed rock 40 years later? I was too young to appreciate it in the 70's
I was at the Borgata(AC) comedy club a few years ago and while waiting for the comedians to start they play music while youre waiting. When "Lowdown" was played you saw people tapping there fingers/hands, bouncing in their seats and singing along...this is one of the coolest and catchiest songs ever in my opinion and live it 45 years later...
So seldom that a band of such brilliant individual musicians can flow together and produce music of genius.
Dude's music was just flat out the coolest
One of the best songs of the '70s. One of my favorites. A classic.
Like fine wine ...mellows with age !!Still got it, he has...
ABSOLUTELY
Hello Arleena..
I saw him in Charlotte in 2017...smooth smooth smooth...one of the best songs ever ❤️
I call him "the poor man's Van Morrison " ... an amazing talent that just kind of skirted the edge of fame and celebrity .. Silk Degrees is an amazing work of art ... so many great songs in one place ... and 40 years later, hearing these songs is nostalgia overload
Can't believe it was scrolling through the comments and as I was just about to read this thought very similar to Van Morrison! An epiphany or something!
Boz Scaggs is sooooooooo smooth..
Loving that sound from my youth..
...Also from My Youth , and Just Loving THAT SOUND in my (Hopefully) Advancing Years! Peace Brother Asanti...!
Oh Hell YES, Good Stuff here, loveeee Boz
I play a little guitar, but there's nothing better than a thumping bass.
The year was 2020. I was 43 years old. I had heard this song all my life. I had never laid eyes on Boz Scaggs. It was that year I realized that the singer was not black.
DIS JAM STILL GOT SOUL.
How in the world could anyone give this song thumbs down! I wonder wonder wonder who!
Once you hear the this Live rendition ... you can't go back to the Vinyl or CD!!
A two part solo with a mini chorus in the middle… so rad

70 s music
Unfreakin real! In a day and age when every one of these instruments could be created using computers, Boz puts together a group of TALENTED MUSICIANS to give us this wonderful performance! This is beyond breathtaking to hear and watch. Props to every one of these talented musicians and singers as well as the sound guy(s)!! The unsung heroes of performances like this!
Thank you from this 70’s kid and 80’s teen for keeping real musicianship alive!!
Here in 2020 STILL riding out COVID19! When I was 19 I worked at Lerner New York in the mall. Whatever "mix tape" the store played was "yacht rock" before it was called that. This song was on that mix tape...simpler days and good memories.
Hello dear.... how are you doing today..??
Boz's voice - Smooth as silk.
Unbelievable talent. Wonderful.
