  • Hey, artists! Have you ever had trouble drawing faces, especially women? I'm here to help, but I'm crediting the great Andrew Loomis for his "ball method" of drawing the head. This is a basic setup of drawing the head, and we'll cover shading in the next video, as I recorded too much for one video. I figured it's easier to break it down and learn in segments rather than all in one sitting. This instructional video is for beginners of portrait drawing and also intermediate artists, but can be used by anyone since his method was for everyone. I also want to say that my word is not gospel. I'm not perfect, but I'll teach what I know. There really are no rules to art, just guidelines. Use your artistic intuition.

As Jane said Andrew Lomis was a phenomenol individual and teacher.
He died in the late 1950's but his books are still in print.
The Head and Hands book runs about $58.00 in Canada if you purchase it through a book agent or Amazon.
    BUT .....................
Rather than line the pockets of the already uber rich just be aware that the Andrew Loomis Books are ALL in the public domain and available to download LEGALLY as free pdf files.
Just search Andrew Loomis pdf downloads.
I am surprised Jane did not mention this.
    Stay Safe and stay home!!!

Thank you so much for mentioning the PDF’s! I completely forgot. I guess I get wrapped up in the looking at the physical books. I believe my favorite one of his is “Creative illustration” since you can see the wide variety of styles he was able to draw and paint. I love that he did show cards and cartoons as well. So versatile in his talent!

OMG.... I loved this video Jane and I gotta get me that book I actually have an AMAZON birthday gift card right now. I always wanted to learn the Loomis method of drawing so I really appreciate you doing videos like this. This is actually something I wanted to work on this year. AMEN ..... I’m way too critical of myself, but aren’t we all as Artists? It’s what makes us special. Your videos are always so funny with the bloopers....great video. I had a pain management doctors appointment yesterday (it’s 2.5 hours away) so by the time we got home yesterday I was in no condition to do anything. We ate and I crashed hard plus we got a lovely wintery mix yesterday so on top of everything my nerves that aren’t effected by my CRPS were SHOT BY THE CAR RIDE ! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Take Care of yourself.

Spoken as a new guy. Regarding Loomis head drawings toward the end 23:51 : It seems with drawing men, the circle falls on the "nose line" (just under the nose), with the mouth below the circle line. (?) This also works because Loomis's horizontal brow line for men is at 1/2. But, as you mentioned for drawing women, the mouth falls on the circle line, and the brow line is at 2/3. Overall your video has been helpful. My biggest challenge was the jaw, which kept turning out masculine. But now I see what I need to adjust. Thank you! :)

There are a plethora of videos on drawing the face straight on. Why can't you do a tutorial on drawing the face at a difficult angle like up 3/4 view?
