  • A libertarian paradox that does not involve any Pareto condition, that might be termed the Busybody Paradox. @PhiloofAlexandria

Great video. Please keep making them. I wish I would have taken one of your courses many years ago back at UT.
Can you please do a video on post-modernism and how it is affecting contemporary politics?
"Post-modernism" gets thrown around as a boogie-man by people who don't seem to fully understand it. Just like how you can't fully defend Capitalism without engaging with its critics like Marx, you can't counteract the fruits of post-modernism without understanding what it actually is.

That's a good idea. I have videos on postmodernism, but my thinking about it has evolved over time. I think I understand it and its effects better than I did earlier.

    We call it fashion.
Conformists are following fashion, non conformists are creating new trends.

One of them could put a giant wall up around their house - so the other woman can't see the paint job. I guess the next issue would be the color of the wall, though...

Professor, I wish you would make an English subtitle for the The Analytic Tradition series, because as a non-native speaker, I find it difficult to follow the series without it, and I am really looking forward to studying it. Thank you very much for all your wonderful efforts.

I may do that for the most viewed lectures it the series. It takes a lot of time, however.

Interesting that the non conformist comes out on top when the colour preference dominates the conformity preference. Libertarian principles then favour the preferences of non conformity - the individual over the group, freedom to be different over social norms.

Professor Bonevac, thank you for this interesting video!
I wanted to ask you whether you can make the video about Hypatia of Alexandria? She is famous for her tragic death. I know that she was Neoplatonic philosopher, but don’t know much else about her philosophic ideas. Maybe you would be able to tell us about her philosophy.

Interesting! Can you please make some videos on the philosophical foundation of market competition (relating to antitrust)? Would be immensely helpful given the regulatory tussle across the globe.

I'm in a friendship where we are both busy buddies trying to seduce the other. There's a bad and good side to it, but it revolves around how if one is trying to please, the other will also try to please. And if one is trying to care for himself, then the other would try to care for himself. The result is quite the relationship!

    Is your choice a purpose?
There seems to be a focus on outcomes, which, naturally, ends up devolving into a discussion of permutations. Pretextual permutations.
When teaching young children to play checkers they have to be constantly corrected. They want to win and they make moves that aren't allowed. They don't understand all the "rules" and why they should obey those rules. They don't posess the prerequisite expectation of pleasure one gets from winning by playing by the rules. Rules which they had no part in concocting.
In your example there seems to be some unsaid rules of decorum. Why? Why not kill your neighbor for painting their house the wrong color? What's wrong with that?
Unless my choice fits your purpose it's not valid? Says who? Who's making up the rules? Am I playing your game, or are we both not playing a game at all?
Is there a difference between games of skill: basketball, soccer, baseball, etcetera, and games of chance: poker, bingo, roulette, the lottery, etcetera? What about gambling on games of skill, like gambling on horse racing or baseball? Is that a different type of gambling?
Games of skill can be honed by the physical and mental will, but there is no guarantee of perfect results. Although games of chance have statistical predictions, those predictions aren't rules: there is no guarantee that they will be obeyed.
Gambling on games of skill is different from that on games of chance in that the statistical choice reduces from the permutations of the game itself to the choice of the number of players. Both of these differ from games of skill because there is no way for them to physically or mentally improve, consistently, the chances of winning.
Besides skill and chance there are hybrid games: board games like checkers, chess, and monopoly, that fall in between pure chance and skill. They combine rules with a limited number of choices: the board. Although card games and the lottery have limited choices as well, those choices rely less on the choices of an opponent but rather on the dealer. The hand dealt or the numbers drawn. Not so much on the moves of your opponent, though in poker there is an element of that: a psychological rather than a statistical element.

They both need to have kids so they stop spending their time on trivial matters.
Once they start babysitting for each other, painting will be the last thing on their minds.
