    • @nickmanzo8459
      @nickmanzo8459 2 роки тому +7

      I think the contrast between her behaviors and the sort’ve thoughts or fears normally associated with spiders was an intentional choice by the writer. Charlotte is a creature normally associated with fear, she is an outcast. No one feeds her as she says, she lives only by her wits. In spite of her predatory nature and almost fatalistic understanding of nature (how easily she accepts her own mortality and her role in keeping insect populations under control), she demonstrates enough compassion to save a pig, only because she likes him.

As a child the whole food sequence at the fair fascinated me. As an adult some of the songs make me cry now, they just hit a raw nerve but I think it is a beautiful movie. I love, love, LOVE the 1998 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer! That was my first introduction to the Rudolph character/legend, and to me personally it’ll always be “my Rudolph”- it’s the original to me. It was also my first ever Christmas movie I’ve seen as well so even more special bonus points for me. I still have it on VHS and I watch it every year when it comes to Christmas time in December since our vhs player still works :) I also really love the soundtrack. No one’s song about Rudolph has beaten Clint Black’s version in my opinion. Even though the message is a little sad, the “what about his nose?” song is always stuck in my family’s head at our household and we all just randomly sing “Rudolph’s shinnnyyyy nose!” “Yes what about!?” “Rudolph’s shinny nose!”. Debbie Reynolds was and is such a national treasure 💕

    The reason for the cheaper animation is the film is by Hanna Barbera behind many classic shows like Scooby Doo Where Are You, Flintstones, Jetsons, The Tom and Jerru Shorts, etc,
    The songs are by the Sherman Brothers who worked on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Pooh, Jungle Book and many others,
    The voice of Charlotte is Debbie Reynolds who was the main girl in Singin in the Rain and would go on to be the Grandma Aggie in the Halloweentown films

    For those who weren't around in the 70's, Wilbur is voiced by Laugh-In's Henry Gibson (whom most might remember as the Nazi leader from "The Blues Brothers"), and the stuttering goose was Agnes Moorehead--Who, apart from Citizen Kane, most rerun fans would remember as Endora from the old "Bewitched" sitcom.
    And growing up in the 70's/80's, even reading the book, we heard Paul Lynde's voice as Templeton.

    Oh man what a blast from the past! I remember watching this all the time as a kid! I had both this and the sequel about Wilbur and the three daughters on VHS. I'm amazing at how familiar everything is and yet I'd completely forgotten how old the animation looks and all the songs. I was never bothered by Charlotte or her daughters being spiders despite my arachnophobia but going back now I am a bit creeped out, especially with all the baby spiders 😅. I definitely think nowadays we'd think "Some pig" would mean "some random pig" but back in the day it was used more as "some special pig" or like "That's quite a pig." I also really liked Templeton's character, I found him funny and liked that even as a loner he was important to Charlotte's plans and helped them out a lot. but I could see how he'd be come across as annoying too lol. I'm glad I got to revisit this old movie with you, it's a classic.

    This was a throwback I haven't seen this movie in years. As a child I use to watch this on VHS it was nice to revisit with you. Charlotte's voice was as beautiful as I remembered and it was a nice surprise to find out Debbie Reynolds played her. Also so many people prefer the live action version I didn't know it was that well liked. I never saw it and assumed it flew under the radar and this was the one people saw.

      The live-action remake is very very good. If not better than the animated version, it's just as a good. I saw the animated version as a kid, but also went to the live-action remake at the theatre, and I loved it. And, at least around where I live, more people are familiar with the remake than they are with the original.

    Wow, thank you so much for reacting to this film. This film holds a special place in my heart because one, the story, characters, etc. are great, and two, according to my parents, I apparently had this movie memorized by heart, most notably when Templeton sings his number while being a glutton at the fair. Anyway, thanks again for talking about this one! I’d say maybe 9/10 for me. Then again, I haven’t watched this film in years. So we’ll see if it still holds up years later, eh? Anyway!

    The music is by the Sherman Brothers, who are most well known for their work with Disney mainly during the 1960‘s and 1970‘s writing songs for movies such as Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, The Jungle Book, The Sword in The Stone, and The Parent Trap among others. They also did do music for other studios during this time, like Charlotte‘s Web here, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and some others. Beyond movies, Richard and Robert Sherman also wrote songs for Disney theme parks attractions, including “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” from Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “It’s a Small World”, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” and “The Best Time of Your Life” from the Carousel of Progress, “One Little Spark” from Journey into Imagination, “Miracles from Molecules” from Adventure Thru Inner Space, “Magic Journeys” from the 3-D film of the same name and “Meet the World” from an attraction of the same name.

    My 3 favorite lines of his:
    1. “I’m hiding down here and I don’t want to be stepped on, or kicked in the face, or crushed, or bruised, or lacerated, or scarred, or biffed…” 😂😂😂
    2. “How should I know? I suppose the next thing you want me to fetch is a dictionary.”
    3. “Is this true? Is this appetizing yarn of yours true?”

    One thing that the remake does better than this one is better explaining WHY Fern's dad was gonna kill Wilbur. As a kid it just came across to me as size discrimination (which didn't make any sense). The second one better explains that there were too MANY piglets and there wasn't enough room for Wilbur. He would've starved if the dad didn't kill him and Fern didn't step up to take care of him.
