You have to realize that the caste system in India has become a farce today. Traditionally prominent castes like Patels in Gujarat, or Jats in Haryana are demanding classification under OBC. So belonging to a backward caste is no longer a matter of shame, but a desirable position. Everybody wants reservation today, and this is definitely not what the makers of the constitution envisaged. Caste system will never end in India, and Brahmins can no longer be blamed for this!

Same with others in India. It's cultural problem due to the distortion of traditions and knowledge. That doesn't mean Brahmins are bad or Dalits or Kshatriyas are bad/superior/inferior. Knowledge of civilizational history and literature is a must in school. As well as de-colonizing and de-abrahamizing the lens which has lead to most of the distortions and ensured its continuation/hatred rather than course correction.

The beauty of Hinduism is that we are not bound by one book or one interpretation of our religion. So we have the freedom to question, challenge, reject and accept the version that we feel best represents us(every individual has) and so if Manu smriti doesnt work for you, then chuck it. Go to whichever scriptures you relate to. But that freedom is not available in any other religion who are bound by ONE book. 2. The fact that if caste system is linked to Hindus only, then how is it that other religions are displaying caste system. The only explanation is the fact that they have been converted from Hinduism!

Not only Sikhs, there's Caste in Christians as well and a separate reservation for 'Dalit Christians' in Christian institutions. Genuine question - If caste is a Hindu system, then how come someone who's been baptised as Christian hold a caste of Dalit at the same time, officially on paper? That's like 2 opposite ends of the spectrum. Isn't that the whole point of missionaries of converting people to another faith to get rid of casteism and promote acceptability? And if casteism is being practiced across faiths, then the whole long held argument against Hinduism that it promotes discrimination based on caste isn't just restricted to Hinduism afterall. It's all the same. Not trying to target any community, just trying to wrap my head around this complexity.

It is more about self worth. Why should I continue to worship and stay adhere to a religion that doesn't allow me into their temples and continues to treat me as unclean. Missionaries did provide opportunities for education which a dalit would never have had if remained Hindu.

    1. Brahmins and Baniyas of the Hindu community of Punjab did not convert to Sikhism (Shekhar Gupta sir is himself Bania community and is Hindu)
    2. Khshatriyas are called Khatris in Punjabi, since all Sikh Gurus were Khatris hence most Khatris also converted to Sikhism, but there are still Hindu Khatris for example Kapoors, Chopra, Malhotras etc they are Hindus
    3. Jatts totally converted to Sikhism
    4. Scheduled castes and Tribes mostly converted to Sikhism still some of them are Hindus

    1. A clarification: jat/ jatt is not a caste, but a racial identity. To view them as a caste, is viewing them with the same lens as the Hindu caste system or rather wanting to view them with a more familiar viewpoint. Jat(t) people are present in Balochistan, Pakistan, Panjab, Haryana, Western UP and Rajasthan. They've followed the religion of the times and the region but were, also somewhat defiant towards organized religion - being defiant and not giving two hoots about authority is in their DNA. The martial nature of Guru Gobind Singh appealed to the jat(t)'s and a lot of them converted to Sikhism during that time too. To be clear, the Sikh Guru's were not jat(t)'s and the jat(t) people didn't discriminate towards them, rather followed The Guru's. Jat(t)'s have followed Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism, but are racially from the same ethnic group, just as Dravidan Indians would be a separate ethnic group.
    2. From a political analysis, you can view them as to how they would fit your criteria and how the politics would slice up the population as a vote bank.

Here is a brief description of why the caste dynamics is not the same in Punjab like UP and Bihar:-
The British could not enter Punjab till Ranjit Singh was alive. After his death, the Anglo-Sikh wars were fought. This was a decade ago the great Indian revolution of 1857. There was no Sikh kingdom left to participate in the 1857 uprising, which a lot of people don't understand and accuse Sikhs of supporting the British during the uprising. Traditionally Khatris were the martial clan who gave a tough fight to the British. You got this important point wrong and totally missed the land distribution part (later explained), which was the key event. To get rid of them Britishers gave patronage to the lower caste Jatts who were traditional tilers(farm labors). Post Anglo-Sikh wars Khatris were stripped of their land holdings. The Jatts were gifted land owned by Khatris the traditional landlords in Punjab. The Khatris were made landless. They took up trading and other businesses to survive. Khatris are referred to as 'Bhapa' pronounced 'Papa' a derogatory term in Punjabi. Often Bollywood films use this term and of course, Indians use it while addressing Sikhs. If you remember the celebrated song of Dharmendra 'rafta rafta meri ankh kis see ladi hai' there is a line ' O Pape kudi phasi gayi' addressed to a Sikh gentleman among the crowd. Even Navjot Singh Siddhu has used this term in Kapil Sharma shows. In a way, Punjab progressed by the transfer of land to lower caste Jatts. But it only benefited them as Dalits were not part of the deal. This shows why land distribution is so important in today's India. With land comes economic power, which elevates social standing.

The whole idea of reverse caste pride is just a reactionary idea that leads to domestic fragmentation.
Which is why the PRC's (or Savarkar's probably) ethno-nationalism seems to make more functional sense.
The whole point of having a single State is to expand the tribal consciousness from a "jati" based one to a national one.
Social justice interventions that lead to this end-state must be emphasized, ones that lead to fragmentation must be diminished.
Reversing yesterday's dynamics instead of embracing today's possibilities, will make us lose this century too (as we've been so many before).

    • @cauliflowerhead2735
      @cauliflowerhead2735 3 роки тому +2

Reorganization and reversal are 2 different things . Since every aspect of the lower castes have been stigmatized and reviled culturally it is an important healing process for them to first reorganise their own idea of themselves to move forward. If they don't do that you'll have a situation where they are converting in droves to other religions to escape the cultural dehumanization that they simply cannot wish away like perhaps you can since none of this is a part of your lived reality. That defeats the nationalistic vision. We Indians like blanket moves like Demonization which promise a 1 shot solution to all our problems, we have no patience for a phase by phase long term realistic plan.

    • @jojobabok9373
      @jojobabok9373 3 роки тому +1

@@cauliflowerhead2735 I agree with you. But there's no guarantee that this process won't get hijacked by anti-India interest groups to stall if not ultimately reverse the process of national integration.
Pride & shame are inherently complementary & dangerous ideas, as can be seen from our (caste) & world history. The better idea would be to reject others' pride (in this case, that of "upper" castes) & along with it goes one's complementary shame.
The nation needs to be prioritized (in my opinion) because we currently live in an inter"national" world order, where the nation is the operationalizable tribal unit (historic "civilizational" glory-stories, like the RW drags in, are only tools to mobilize popular support toward this goal).
Nations continue to compete for attaining & retaining inter-generational privileges (through the IP regime, control over the global monetary system, military alliances, etc.)
When sweatshops (like the PRC) rise to challenge the favorable knowledge differential of the Primearchs (the US-led West), they are stigmatized & attempts are made to force them down into obeying their "rules-based order".
So it's not like we now live in a more egalitarian world, that we need to "correct" our way into. The dynamics of power remain the same. It has just expanded to a global scale.
If we as a nation (whatever's left of it) don't get our priorities in order, none of us will win the world (in which case, why even bother existing as one State?)

The motive of reservation by Constitution makers will never be fulfilled by the trend these groups are taking, and this trend will continue for infinite generations.
I never argued on punjab politics intricacies. I argue if an egalitarian religion like sikhism can have such caste inequalities even when their religious preachers denounced, than its easily fathomable that indian people will start identifying themselves with more engineered caste/groups/sub groups based on miniscule differences and then politics of reservation will go on forever.

Their kings at that time had hindu names too..after that when ahom kingdom declined under the british, jaintia kingdom was left independent for many years much later became a protectorate. Accordingly both kingdom was equally illiterate until english medium education was introduced. So our Constitution maker intellectual class classified ahom kingdom castes as mostly obc and general with few st groups but the jaintia was declared st. Now i question who prevented them from attaining education, there was no any brahmins in jaintia kingdom so 0 cases of brahmical oppression, will arise., They were full time independent to take their own decisions. Constitution states st s are groups that shyied away from connecting mainstream, {so what was mainstream indian society then where even 10%population was not educated in 1900-50s, does it qualify for being called mainstream back then}so aren't these groups getting benefits consuming unreserved seats just because of the lame reason that their grandparents were shy.
People often cite dalits faced oppression from brahmins but in assam the sc s are groups that hadn't faced any discrimination like in hindi belt, all groups in assam were segregated entities with endogamy prevalent, even a sc would equally despise giving his daughter to a brahmin or bringing a brahmin daughter in law for marriage
So when our Constitution makers made the Constitution they viewed all the indian ethnic groups based on braminical oppression prism of hindi belt which doesn't hold any ground in all the regions of the country.

I am from punjab. Sikhs has so much caste discrimination. In most villages jatts has separate gurudwaras and cremation ground. In some parts of punjab some jatt parents don't allow their kids to be friends with dalits. And it's not just in punjab, in western countries it's the worst in sikhs. It would never end.

How is it worse than in hindus? I would say it‘s the same. Go to other states it‘s even worse according to statistics.

I have a question. If someone could please answer.
Most of the people convert to other religions to avoid casteism. In case of Kerala, during the 18th & 19th century, many people converted to Islam and Christianity so as to avoid the horrific casteism they faced in Hinduism. But what I am seeing is that, even though people have converted, they still hold on to the caste. There are Dalit Christians, Dalit Muslims, Dalit Sikhs. Then what was the point of embracing another religion, in which there is no inherent concept of cast system? In this way, people will never escape the horrible practices of cast system and ultimately, cast system can never be annihilated from our country. This bad practice will go on till the earth is there.
What is then the solution for removing cast system? This just seems a never ending problem.

Please don't shout at me or anything. Because I'm not disputing you. But those fissures are evident and I think even SG has discussed it multiple times. Although it would have made a little sense to talk about it because it's happening at least in another two states. It's bound to backfire at least in Punjab.

India was for 150 years and is a complex system of Religions, Castes, Sects and Practices.
Those people now in the age group of 45-75 have learned to live/survive with the above factors in mind.
Hope the next generation of youth or millennials either evolve or transcend above the century-old factors, and establish a new society and practices.
Currently, the Economic Disparity, which again is historical, is the Prime Reason for all political parties to easily sway the mindset of the poor, middle class and upper middle class Indians.
The rich and super rich Indians (2-3% of the country's population) are always unaffected by the above factors.

I'm just wondering when was the last time a politician in India campaigned and won on promises of education, healthcare, infrastructure and employment.
In India, if you belong to this religion or that caste, you can win and then the country never develops and economy stagnates.

  • @singharvindm

Good research and you are correct for defining the entrenchment of castes amog the Sikhs in Punjab. However, I would like to correct you on one assumption you made incorrectly. Maharaja Ranjit Singh did not promote Jatts with a bias. Instead his rule was more distributed among various religious and caste groups. In fact his main leadership in his court included notable Khatris, such as Hari Singh Nalwa, Hukma Singh Chimni the governor of Sindh, Mihan Singh the governor of Kashmir, Raja Sawanmal, Raja Kauramal, Gurmukh Singh Lamba, and Raja Moolraj of Multan. Also prominent were the Dogra Rajputs of Jammu, Bramins such as Lal Singh Misr, Pundit Jalla, and other Sikh clans such as Ahluwalia, and Ramgarhia.
Another inaccuracy, I would like to point oot is that of Sardar Udham Singh who belonged to the Kamboh or Kamboj community. The entire discussion is in contradiction to the teachings of Sikh Gurus and I am also guilty of responding to this discussion. In principle, we should not encourage discussion on castes but reality is embarassing on the rural Punjab.
