My hubby is a bankruptcy attorney who is nothing short of a workaholic. Just 2 days ago, someone was teasing him about our DVC because he's not a parks person. I asked him point blank if he regretted our DVC purchase, putting him on the spot. (I know not to ask a question I don't know the answer to, lol.) He told his friend that he has no regrets because it "forces him to take vacations." Our DVC membership was instrumental in teaching him to take vacation time. No regrets here even if I'm the one who uses our membership most often (without him.)
I love Craig's brutal honesty, need more of it on the show.
Don't always agree with Craig (e.g. completely disagree w/his take on BLT)- but he never short changes the audience. Respect.
I agree completely. I miss the honestly and conversations.
My wife and I first looked at DVC on our honeymoon and we realized it was not for us yet. Just married, starting new jobs, and trying to save to buy a house took priority. Fast forward six years later and we were ready. Fifteen years as owners and still loving it!!
I purchased a small resale contract of 120 points 6 years ago for $10,000. I was 58 years old, single with 2 grown married daughters. We vacationed at Disney almost every year since 1989 staying at value and moderate resorts then rented points for 11 years. It was my dream to own and so I purchased as much as I could afford based on yearly dues. This year I banked 2022 points, combined 2023 points and borrowed 2024 points for a 2 bedroom villa at Aulani this September. To think that was all possible with a tiny contract of 120 points. ❤
I love hearing this. My nephew and his wife own DVC and I get to benefit as they take me with them. Aulani is so incredible and I could go there several times a year.
Also, the spa at Aulani is the best I have been to. I want to plan a trip there just to do spa every day.
Craig’s burden in life would be a dream for many Disney fans.
He's the only smart one.
Other than having a boss that requires you to be connected and responsive during non-work hours.
Does anyone else find with each passing show, this is just becoming a World of DVC infomercial. I started watching this show at the very beginning and since now own 1000+ points (direct and resale). I miss the guy who's cat used to be sitting on his lap during the show, and occasional "real world" guest to bring in other perspectives other than telling viewers to 'just buy some points to find out how you'll like it'. I loved the shows that got into the weeds of point distribution and how to get the most out of your membership. The shows used to make me WANT to buy more points. Money speaks and I suppose the sponsor is the one calling the shots now.
good job guys. you suckered me in in 2020 and im about to buy my 3rd contract. Havent regretted it once so far.
This was 100% me. We are Disneyland cast members and looked into buying direct in 2014, but the finances did not make sense at the time and we were not aware of the resale market. We just bought our first contract last month (resale) and got a great deal, but I definitely wished we had bought earlier. Thank you so much for mentioning DVC cast members, because we are in a slightly different niche and it's nice to hear that DVC can still work for us. Keep up the great work!
I was the person who always booked All-Star Movies and was satisfied because for me it was just a place to sleep. A few years ago when the All-Stars were $100 a night, I put the idea of DVC out of my mind because it didn’t make sense for a Disney-goer like me. Fast forward to last year and the value resort prices skyrocketed from what they were just a few years ago while the resale contracts and annual dues only slightly increased. The math started mathin' and I now have 100 points at Saratoga, have plans to go multiple times a year, and even have plans to add on!
I dealt with Dani for a resale animal kingdom contract. Very professional and informative
Great video.
However, can I ask why international buyers/owners are never discussed?
For example, renting points for a UK owner is not the simple process that US owners can enjoy. Same with benefits in terms of offers like magical beginnings, not available to non U.S. citizens. No one ever talks about the differences in this regard.
Can you do a video discussing the process of buying both direct and resale, renting points, and offers available and not to non U.S. owners and prospective buyers? 😊
Keep an eye out for our July 31st episode! 😉
@@DVCFan brilliant, thank you! I will look forward to it.
@@DVCFanJuly 31st passed, but I don’t see a video about it.
I feel like this podcast has gone from being informative to being an infomercial. As a DVC owner I like to listen to get tips or here about DVC special discounts. Now it's just listening to someone trying to sell me something. I hope this is just this episode and not the future of DVC fan.
One thing that was mentioned on why DVC isn’t for everyone is Dogs. Craig honestly hit it spot on. I need to bring my dogs with me or have a dog sitter (they don’t do well being boarded) and on top of that Disney boarding is super expensive, and not having a DVC that is dog friendly puts a full on stop to the conversation right away and I am sure for other people too. And the new DVC cabins at wilderness will be the only true place I can use them
And why I will not buy the cabins....not paying for upkeep on bad pet owners!!!
I was at Sports last week. The Brazilian teen tour groups are back and kept me awake for an hour on Tuesday night (running, screaming down the hallways and talking outside their room
With chairs and leaving tons of trash around). Ada teacher, I don’t think DVC would work for me. The best thing about Disney is I can cancel my vacation 5 days before. However these DVC resorts probably don’t have those annoying foreign teen groups.
Definitely not! I stayed at Sports once with the cheerleaders. It was a nightmare. Dvc is the only way for me!
Loved the craig guy, you should bring him more often
Based on my quick calculations, a DVC studio booked with points costs somewhere between Pop Century and low-end moderate hotel rooms. So if youre going to Disney and staying in a moderate resort or higher once a year, that's when I would seriously consider buying. Staying at All Stars is still a cheaper way to stay on property if you just want things like bus transportation and early hours.
"Multimillionaire wall street banker buys DVC for his family." Not sure how I'm supposed to relate to that anecdote
I’m not a millionaire or even thousandaire but I love going with my nieces and nephews every year and making memories with them ….just buy a 50 point contract to start …. 😊
Lol. We are almost Diamond + with Royal Caribbean, and the free drinks are awesome 😊 It's a good goal, Amy!
Great perspective on DVC ownership and use. I feel Craig makes a good case that DVC may not be for everyone. However, no one should be so married to their work that their cell phone is a 24/7 connection. The first issue toward healthy vacations, relationships, and life overall is setting firm boundaries regarding the separation of personal life and work life. Turn the cell phone off! ❤️😉
I appreciate Craig’s input. With his love of the cabins, I do think DVC can be right for him and his family with a small contract. I hope we hear from Craig more on shows
I've had a 50 point contract for almost 4 years now. Love it. Worked well for me!
I will tell you what to do about those years your kids don’t want to go with you, go as a couple! So many different choices and experiences. My husband dives at Epcot, we love upscale dining, Savor the Savanna. We have an absolute blast.
exactly!! Those years we just went 2 trips per year no kids!!! amazing!!
My husband and I started going to WDW in 1988 when our kids were 8 and 1'3. When Okv first came up, I was ready to buy, my husband was concerned that we wouldn't go once the kids were gone. Fast forward, we're empty nesters and going more than ever. BCV came up and hubby says, let's buy. Nevere regretted a single purchase since then.
That’s what I did - started with 100 then added 60 then another 60 then 25. It’s helped grow and not put myself in unnecessary debt. 15 years and still love it
A bit off topic but hear me out. So...using DVC points for cruises...although you CAN is not best use of your points.
To Craig's point...what if DVC branched out to OFFER fractional ownership of Disney Cruise Line?
It could also be reciprocal use of points on land (although not best use of points) but could open up more "ownership" for MANY more members.
It could be called DVCS or DisneyVacationClubSEA. What do you think?
Even with resale, it will take you 12+ years to save money over someone booking moderates directly, after you factor in DVC annual dues and the discount you can often get from an annual pass. IMO, your appetite has to be for deluxe and up for DVC to be worth it. I encourage anyone considering a contract to put a number on how soon you want to break even and doing the math before jumping in.
We were disney fans, pulling our camper to ft wilderness when we discovered dvc in 93. We bought before the finances made sense over camping, but we recognized our needs were going to change.
Good episode! Craig’s candor gives a good perspective 😅
I am completely in agreement with Amy! Are use my hotel as a resting stop for a clean, comfortable bed in a safe place and get up and commando the parks I would be lying. If I said, I wasn’t curious about DVC though.
Staying on property makes rope dropping so much easier.
Craig shot me with BLT but I agree with OKW. There is value resorts I think I prefer. It does nothing for us. Great show guys!
Hilton Head and Vero Beach was why we bought DVC. It was the best decision we made.
Great show everyone
DVC is definitely for every Disney fan😊 Except Craig 😂 My family and I love it and will continue to keep using it every year!
With the expiration date under 20 years away what does the team see the value of existing contracts year by year go? Does it peak 15 years out and gradually declines or does it hold steady and drops dramatically the last 10 yrs or something else?
Unfortunately we just don't know the answer to this yet. With the first resorts expiring in 2042, we have not yet seen any DVC property significantly decline in value as a result of the impending expiration date.
FYI I have told people doc will work for them and they love it 😊
Dani was my selling and purchasing agent. She is absolutely wonderful.
Great content!
Maybe Craig's view of DVC will change now that his boss has changed🤔
Buying a 50 point contract - how do you make sure you use up every point? I get horrified being 1-5 points over/under and them expiring. Seems like a headache and potential unoptimized way to travel
Great question! Is this a common scenario to end up with leftover points?
Simple, you rotate points. Bank points you don't need and when booking the following year, make sure THOSE points are utilized first.
Funny thing Craig, is our first DVC was AK and we still think it the best but we also like RR. And WL and Poly are in our top 4. But we also dislike BLT, adult children included.
What if you aren’t a Disneyworld fan so much but love both the Aulani and Hilton head resorts. Would it be worth it if you only used your points there? Both of those locations appeal to me enormously.
Yes
Aulani is worth it alone. I could go there several times a year and never tire of it.
How can DVC be both be for everyone and not for anyone who never reaches a point where even the lowest DVC cost doesn't make sense?
How do I get in touch with Dani or Linda about purchasing DVC?
I looked at renting points for Spring Break of next year for one week --- it is one third of the cost of purchasing resale points --- I went ahead and made an offer for resale points.
I have purchased all 3 of my contracts from DVCResale. I bought 100 points at Grand Californian, Beach Club, and Aulani. I rotate every other year in Hawaii and Florida. I use 200 points per stay (banking 100 points to use the following year). I wish I had more of Grand Californian because I go to Disneyland 2-3 times a year. My DVC membership has been ideal for me and my grown-up kids living away from home. They love going, and the hotel is always on MOM. It gets everyone to come together. Hotel and Resort rates continue to rise every year. To me, buying into DVC freezes time. If you bought in 2010, your room rate is frozen at that rate for the length of the contract (yes, I pay my dues every month, but they seem so little I hardly notice them). Also, Those points encourage me to plan and TAKE a vacation! I need the breaks, and why not do it at the most magical places on earth??? I highly recommend DVC Resale - it is so much cheaper to buy into DVC, and honestly, the "blue card" benefits just aren't there anymore (except for folks who live out of state and want the AP). I only go to Flriday every other year, so I do not need an AP (though I am an MK holder in DL). Thanks, DVC RESALE and Monera, for helping me!
Hey to my bestie, Dani Metzger!
I've stopped going to Disney World because the State gov't does not support a woman's right to choose and does not support gay and trans people so I no longer feel comfortable supporting that state. We use our points for the cruises, mainly European cruises and we'll probably take a trans-Atlantic cruise in the next few years.
Wow Criag …… way harsh ….. sure you’re doing the right job ? …. Life is too short ….
It also works well for International Disney fans who only travel to Florida every other year or so 😃
I am curious as to why the lady said you cannot do a 50 point package direct with Disney....I actually have a 50 point contract direct and have all of the DVC perks including a physical blue card...I even called in May 2023 to confirm that I am eligible for perks....I have been a member since 2017 and have been getting all of the perks since. Is this a new thing that you cannot get a 50 point contract direct with DVC?
Yes Disney changed the minimum required to get the Blue Card Benefits. February 2018: Raised to 75 points. September 2019: Raised to 100 points. June 3rd 2021: Raised to 150 points. Of course, you're grandfathered in and so your Blue Card is still valid (you can now access it digitally since they don't issue them anymore), but anyone buying TODAY won't get Blue Card benefits unless they buy at least 150 points direct.
Minimum buy in is now 100 points direct. You also don’t get a blue card/membership extras until you accumulate 150 direct points.
Yes but you can have them split the contracts in 50pt increments of you buy direct
think of the impact of the brightline on florida dvc.
Before joining DVC, I would have said not everyone can afford DVC, but If I could afford a (very) small) contract on my (very) small McDonald's paycheck then so can alot of people who don't think they can afford to buy in.
These guys sell DVC so my radar goes off a bit. I have looked into DVC multiple occasions throughout the last 20 years since our needs have changed. Each time, I came to the same opinion, it would be a cool thing to have if you have a ton of disposable income and spend 600+ a nite on a room when you vacation. For the working guy that hopes to retire early (my plan), just doesn’t make sense. I see people talking about saving all year just to hand it over to Mickey Mouse in the name of family time (I personally know multiple). If that is truly the goal, you could do different destinations for less and do them more often. How many times does one want to spend 2hr in line for a ride. We love Disney but feel like I didn’t get a good value when the vacation was over.
They also missed those that only like/can do last minute trips. DVC can work but not likely.
Craig needs to go to Vero Beach or Hilton Head
It kind of aggravates me that people tell me things like, "Well we like to do things spur of the moment" so since you have to plan well in advance with Disney that doesn't work for us.
To me, that's just a cop out, because the reality is that you know when your Birthdays, Anniversaries and school breaks occur. It's not really a big stretch for you to plan those events in advance. Reality is that these days if you want to go anywhere or do anything that's REALLY worth while, it sells out and MUST be pre-planned.
Craig .. maybe not the best guy to have on if you want to sell DVC lol
Craig's commentary was definitely interesting! I think it was good of them to have someone offer reasons why DVC ownership might NOT be the best choice. The only problem I saw with Craig is that his reasons against it were pretty unique, between the nature of his DIS job and having a dog with medical needs. It might work better to have someone on who can raise issues and concerns that more listeners might relate to.
Paul doing his best to look like Syndrome with that hair
$550 + 12.5%=$618.75. Or, 9 points at $217/point= $1953. I guess I'll pay rack rate over DVC.
Where did the $217 a point come from?
When you pay rack rate, whatever money you spent is now gone. Generally when you buy DVC your maintenance fees are usually 4-6X LOWER than "Rack Rate" (your example 9 points at say Animal Kingdom resorts is around $80.00 in Maintainance Fees). As for the up front cost of buying the DVC, you could take your vacations with your kids, for say 10, 15 or 20 years then turn around and sell your contract. As an example, I bought my Vero Beach contract a decade ago at just $45.00 a point and my brother bought his Grand Floridian at just over $100.00 a point. Right now, in this depressed market, we can BOTH sell our contracts at a bare minimum 50% MORE than what we paid. In essence when you utilize it this way, not only is your ONLY cost the annual maintenance fees, but in addition, even factoring in the up front cost your break even is usually around 3-5 years. So if you're the person going to a Disney Resort every year this is DEFINITELY a more cost effective way to do it. Even LESS than the cost of staying at Disney's Value Resorts.
You get those points for more than just this year. Those points are good for 50 years, so divide your amount by 50 and you'll see the savings.
@TheCostofAutism you're leaving out a lot of information. If I'm not mistaken, the buy in is $20,000 over 10 years. Now if this works like a regular mortgage, you're paying 2.5 times the asking price. That's $50,000. Minimum amount of points you must buy now is 150. Those points cost $217. That's over $32,000 a year. You have dues and fees, and I'm assuming you need to carry some sort of insurance. So, after 20 years, you've paid out almost $700,000. That's $700,000 you're never going to a return on.
@@MikeTerry1969 they're not good for 50 years. You have to buy those points every year.

Gotta question your bringing Craig into the conversation to rip some beloved DVC properties. Let him do his engineering job & leave it at that. No???
You cannot stay a week in Aulani for 50 points. The cheapest week in the cheapest studio is 119 for a week.
@RoastBeefSandwich true, but that's not what she said. She said for 50 points you can stay there a week.
We purchased at their opening offer during a presentation at bay lake tower in the top of the world lounge. Picked up 150 points for a touch over 100/point we bank them and go every other year, in January we are going for 12 days . We have 600 points total our Cost over all is 90/ pt. Wish I purchased the first time I looked at it it was 55 a point back then
This may be a stretch but Incan see a day when WDW a becomes a members only park with maybe one or two value resorts being open for reservations other wise you have to be a DVC member to go. I am thinking this is 25 years down the road. Look at what they are building lots of towers they are slowly taking over the deluxe resorts
@@MikeTerry1969 Exactly. She said that for 50 points you can stay at Aulani for a week. She DIDN'T say "every year." It was pretty clear from the conversation that the idea was that someone could purchase 50 points and then bank and borrow to put together enough points for a vacation there every 2-3 years. But if you thought she meant "every year" even though she didn't say "every year," then that was a misassumption.
Let's not overlook the angle of REVENGE INVESTING! Love Disney, had $ to invest, and wanted every penny of that to be held outside of California .. .. So, when I bought my first contract last month and was assured that the $ goes --->>> Lake Buena Vista (and not anywhere in California or NY), that just sealed the deal for me .. ..
I guess we’ll never see Jamie on this show again 😢
Today's episode brought to you by the words "like" and "literally". Sponsored by Not Speaking Into the Microphone.
Literally like thank you like for your like literally amazing and like productive and valuable like feedback.
The funny thing about recording shows such as this is everyone thinks they will be decent on camera until the cameras are rolling.
And then words you have never had a problem saying are sometimes lost in the moment of being on camera and verbal pauses (words and phrases such as “like”, “um”, “so”, “you know”, etc.) fill in those moments when you’re trying to find the right words.
Verbal pauses are something I’m definitely trying to be more conscious of and eliminate. I’m making progress, but obviously there are still some there. Interestingly enough, I was watching Bob Iger speak to an interviewer the other day and caught several verbal pauses from him. It was surprising as I figured he was a flawless speaker. I had never caught them before until I have been starting to evaluate my own public speaking. I am definitely more of a take time to gather my thoughts in writing type person, but sometimes we all step out of our comfort zone to try and get better at things. Thank you for your feedback, albeit not the kindnest delivery of criticism. I guess we all have things we can work on.
I disagree with this comment. The overuse of “like” and “umm” is one of my pet peeves. This episode did not bother me at all. You did a great job.
@@YamKriegs Although neither of those comments were directed at you or Paul, I'm glad you have thicker skin than your husband. You would think that feedback, both positive and negative, is good thing for people in the public eye.
@@tpg5974 I appriciate any and all feedback if it is delivered in a professional and tasteful manner.
I know it's not easy, but Please work on your "uh's and umm's". This was unlistenable.
Thanks for the feedback! We're constantly working on improving the best we can and verble pauses are a big one. It becomes harder when you're a little less prepared last-minute and thrust into the hosting chair. Appriciate you watching though and we will keep this in mind in the future. 😊
@@paulkrieger I understand completely. Please don’t think I was being cruel or rude. As someone who does quite a bit of public speaking, I had to work on this myself. I always appreciated help and tips on how I can improve.
@@jonc3903 Not viewed that way at all - I am personally always looking to improve and appreciate you approaching it in a very kind manner.
