There was an episode of the Original Series where the crew was hit with a contagion that made them act like they were all drunk. Sulu ran around shirtless and challenging everyone he encountered to a fencing match.
Well played, writers. Well played.
We see Sulu play with a fencing sword for about two minutes in a SINGLE episode of the original series.
So let's take that one thing about Sulu and turbocharge it and make him a super ninja, because reference.
Yea. George takei suggested sulu attacks with a fencing sword, claiming it was 1 of his fav hobbies. Then he had to learn the basics in fencing before that episode called "the naked time"
and takei was the one who asked that it be a fencing foil instead of a samurai sword because the samurai sword would be too stereotypical. yet here in this modern movie, it's a samurai sword
@@KneelB4Bacon No, they made him good at fencing, which many people are...
@@neomp5 true. Though to be fair, a fencing sword wouldn’t work in this situation. He needed a sword that could slash the cords.
Totally laughed at the "Fencing" response when asked about combat training, totally cheered when he pulled out his sword
Yes, that was the moment I started having fun enjoying the movie and picked Sulu as my favorite.
too bad its not anything like fencing that he's doing.
Too bad they didn't include that scene. That scene was better than the actually fencing scene
Yep
Gotta get those extra curricular for college applications 😅
I'll be honest, John Cho really opened up as someone who can be a bad ass!
which is why white america should cast more asians in big roles
Yeah, if he had been cast as Spike Seigel in 2009, I would have liked it....not so much when he's middle-aged 11 years later :/
Like his warning to Kahn in Into Darkness, he'd make a great Capt. Sulu.
@@unclejoaquin White, Black or whatever man, your stuck with the rules unless you make your own game.
@@vishaansingh1019
He looks pretty young for his age. Probably wouldn't take a lot of makeup or de-aging to make him look the part
My only complaint of this scene is that Sulu really should finish off the last Romulan with a roundhouse kick off the platform.
It should have been a fencing pierre...
"I CAME IN WITH A SWORD AND I PLAN TO USE IT"
It was perfect
Kirk: so what training do you have?
Sulu: fencing
.
.
.
Sulu: what about you?
Kirk: helmet boxing
Sulu dominates the fight!
Chicken Mike
Kirk's still young, he isn't the brawler shatner was quite yet.
Sulu is such a badass
I like that JJ basically gave the rivalry between Kirk and Sulu in The Original Series the finger with Sulu’s undying loyalty to his captain.
That was cool to see.
I love JJ's camera work. I love the look of the effects. I love the mixture of the camera work and the effects.
It all looks so... *REAL*
except for those gotdang lens flares.
The shaky Camera is annoyingly
So you wanted an action movie?
@@campbelldowler1396 I want my sci-fi to look real, and not too 'majestic'.
@@Keichwoud357 Go make your own crummy shaky cam armature movie! I want to actually watch a professional movie.
0:31 That's the sword I wanted to invent.
Right? So convinient to carry around.
Did you invent it yet?
John Cho as Sulu was so badass here.
John Cho makes an amazing Sulu.
I don’t give a damn about that scene in Beyond. That could’ve just as easily been his brother and niece that he was visiting. The way he greeted them, especially his supposed husband, didn’t suggest that they were his husband and daughter.
You know, I always thought John Cho was a pothead but he's rockin' the shit in this one!
it's a movie, he and everyone else is an actor
Wait, he’s a pothead?
@@georgeofhamiltongo and watch “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle”.
@@georgeofhamilton Harold and Kumar reference
I hope we see more of Sulu’s switchblade-katana. That thing is cool!
Although the uploader didnt show this part of the movie
The Red Shirt guy died for nothing in this scene
LOL
Yeah that guy had to be an idiot
@@rexlumontad5644 It's ok, he had to get to his next job anyway, Knight-Captain of Kirkwall.
Sulu is a total badass I love it
Sulu is such a bad ass!
I am a 49yr old star trek fan...
This scene (and movie) truly won me over. Possibly best modern sequel of past films!
No matter how bad this or Cowboy Bebop was, John Cho is one of the best stage fighters out there today!
Harold, welcome aboard. You're officially our new Sulu. Good to have you.
It’s a good thing all Star Fleet officers spend 10 hours a day training mixed martial arts and somehow still have time to become masters of science and space exploration.
Don't forget, they're also all young and beautiful.
I don't understand how any human can fight Romulans, when they have literal super-strength compared to us
The face he made at 1:32 had me rolling
0:42. I'll give those enemies their due, they fought generally fair considering they had pistols they chose not to use, instead fighting with melee weapons.
This is what Prime Sulu was fantasizing about in “Naked Time”
That swords fucking awesome.
I think the sword was the coolest aspect about this fight.
0:33 Now that is what you call a Switch Blade
George Takei would've kicked all their asses with his fencing sword.
Who else came to look at his martial arts potential for the live action Cowboy Bebop?
Me lol
Me XD
"If you test me, you will fail"
Best quote of the movie haha
go sulu!
i'll get deeper into Star Trek if I see more of this sword
Thats way more than fencing...
It's future fencing 😁
Its HEMA fencing not Olympic fencing.
@@allopez8563 lol that's what I was thinking.
Wished we have that.
@@multiverse_media2023 HEMA my friend. Best sport I've invested in.
Nice sword
Mr. Sulu
(1:55) "He also had my cell phone!"
JJ Abrams is a visionary.
0:37 That's the moment when Sulu/John Cho became my hero. 😍
何度見ても、この場面のカトーはカッコ良すぎる
This is way cooler than a lightsaber fight
That music that stay in your head
I don't know why, but i suddenly want J.J. Abrams to direct a Power Rangers movie lol
SULU! Oh God yea!
even the future they did not forget to use the katana
Finally Sulu gets some genuine action.
There are thirty years of directors and writers that owe Mr. Takei an apology.
MrTimeControl:
I have one question. Why would somebody click on a video of a segment from a movie he hates? I'm genuinely curious.
brilliant action/music - gives you hope for Star Wars
How do you feel about this comment now???
@@campbelldowler1396 to be fair, it really did give hope
@@davidminor4213 True; I think if JJ had gone into Star Wars trying to make Star Trek, he would have made marvelous movies.
You know, aim high, hit low.
And when he tried to make Star Wars movies... well, the results speak for themselves.
@@campbelldowler1396 eh, personally I always had low expectations for the sequel trilogy. It's not about JJ or Johnson (who really is a good director, i.e. Knives Out) it's the fact the story ended in ROTJ. Period.
Anakin is redeemed, Luke rebuilds the order, Han and Leia marry, everyone lives happily ever after.
Oh waitaminute!
Of course Luke would be cynical in his old age, still turned out better than his dad. Of course, Han and Leia wouldn't work out, I mean it's Han and Leia. Of course, no one lived happily ever after because that's not how life works.
The ultimate end to every single story is ..... everyone dies. That's exactly why it's so important to know when to wrap it up.
By their very existence, the sequels ruin the happy ending of ROTJ.
So what did you realistically expect??
Notice that Disney does make good SW stories when they stay away from the Skywalker family tree. This is why! There's no more stories to tell, it's just dragging it out now.
Imagine if Gene Rodenberry never moved on from Kirk & co. Sure, there's been crap, but there would be no Picard, Data, Worf (underrated character), Borg, etc. We didn't know it then, but we didn't need season 4, we needed TNG!
Repeat: the sequel trilogy was doomed no matter what
Should I tell him or.....what?
Brilliant movie - great storyline, great acting & amazing visual effects. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana did a great job. Winona Ryder deserved more screen time
This is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films of the 2000's (next to Mission to Mars, Avatar, X-Men, Donnie Darko, The Cell, Equilibrium, Minority Report, Signs, The Chronicles of Riddick, The Day After Tomorrow, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Serenity, Children of Men, Sunshine, Blindness, Eagle Eye, Pandorum, Push and Moon)
Yes because it makes absolute sense for only one team member to have charges to destroy a weapon that is jeopardizing an entire planet.
0:33
Is it just me or is that sword Star Trek's answer to a "lightsaber"?
TheVJProduction Only cheer badassery
Neither am I. Star Trek just have more brawling, and I like it this way. Makes something different.
this whole scene reminded me of rotj, when they were about to throw luke into that sand pit monster thing
yes it has some similarities. the people falling in the pit and the guy who comes with the sword saving the day.
amm019 Except Sulu's choice of a Katana has meaning.
Not enough Sulu in Star Trek Into Darkness
This was a great scene.
wants that katana really badly! D=
You'd think that they'd have better parachutes by then...
Fantastic. Only a jeep could stop that.
Romulans are wearing Ninja shoes!
I cant wait until self deploying pocket swords are invented
Great gadget and timeless scene,,, a folding sword!!!!
0:53-0:57 is my fav part. camera work+music+action=perfect
Love this film. Way better than the sequel.
Damn shame we never got to see Jon Cho's Sulu in action like this again...
Cont. > I liked this film because there were still emotional stakes, still complex characters and those relationships between them that we love, but the added badassness meant that Star Trek finally once again had a reason to be set in space!
Claims to know fencing. Whips out a katana
RIP guy who played Chekov
Sulu like a boss.
This is like what, third time he's hanging from something in the whole movie?
Fencing in the present is badass.
This whole segment was badass from the jump from the Enterprise to this fight on the drill.
Gotta love the transporter at the end of the sequence.... still love this whole scene.
@@LaurenGlenn Yes
Now the only thing that will make this scene is the phrase OH MYYY
Great scene. Great movie.
Harold... NICE MOVES MAN - Kumar
The musical cues reminiscent of the classic TOS battle music is a pretty great touch
The final romulan almost looks more like a TOS klingon with that facial hair.
In the future.... Everyone will carry a sword
@@lvlc6023 That and blasters for ranged work.
Takei: 2.....Shartner: 0
LOL
sulu is my fav character
"Gimme your hand, cmon! ファイト~いっぱ~つ" shouts gen X Japanese me
Dang Sulu, ya got some sick moves.
Fencing in the future is badass
He took command of the Enterprise at least.
That poor bastard that Sulu fries is played by Damion Poitier. He is the man who portrays THANOS. We'll be seeing more of him soon.
So this is our Spike Spiegel now...
Ok, those are some cool swords.
What I always liked about Nero's ship is that is just a mining vessel that been retrofitted into superweapon, which he managed to pull off by simply getting ahold of some strange matter. In fiction, doomsday weapons are usually ready made weapons. Plus its nice that they still use parachutes 23rd century, don't see that much in sci-fi very often, usually its some anti-grav device instead.
Don't piss of Sulu lol, and damn John's good with a katana and has nice moves
List of people to screw with.
1. Anyone else
2. Sulu.
he cut the strings
Sulu sword is JJ Abram's Star Trek lightsaber!! Think about it. A collapsible katana. If a battle ready one could be made. It would be a game changer!!!
the look on that romulans face at 1:30 😨 "Oh Woaf!" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
it was still a good movie!!
Welcome to DRAMATIC STORYTELLING!!! This is true for almost ALL movies of this caliber. As many screen writers will tell you, if movies followed realistic logic, movies would be boring and 15 minutes long. Watching the characters space jump and simply destroy the drill without much effort isn't as exciting as watching them struggle a bit and have to improvise when things don't go as plan. Your just nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking.
TheDalinkwent by the time they finishing "struggling", Nero would STILL have destroyed Vulcan. and possibly Sulu and Kirk would be dead.
I'm going to indulge in nitpicking for a moment:
It's "you're" dammit!
But seriously, the tricky part is finding that line where your story is realistic enough to be believable yet unrealistic enough to be an escape
Did anyone else notice sulu had to brush his hair back before fighting
Sulu, straight savage!
Kirk's Helmet vs Two Guys with Swords
Good. You don't limit yourself. The world needs more people like you. That is all.
Red alert, this is not a drill!
oh wait.. yes it is.
やっぱスールー好きだわ〜
0:44 Not familiar with that move in fencing. :p
They said in the movie that Nero's ship was dampening their sensors and weapons, they couldn't fire a shot.
Sulu pulls out his lightsaber, lol
I love this movie! 😁 0:32 Sulu the Space Samurai.🤺
