    Steve is the ultimate boxing rep in fighting games. I think the dirty boxing, foot stomps, etc. just add to it since lore-wise it’s a no holds barred MMA tournament - you’d assume a boxer in a street fight would break some of the rules. Sometime you’ll have to go back to Steve’s intro Tekken 4 and see his progression through the series. He only had flicker in 4; peekaboo was added in 6. But he had a non-rage Dempsey roll that was infinite unless stopped or broken until it was removed in 7.
    I’m sure others have mentioned it, but TJ Combo was a pure boxer in the original Killer Instinct game in the 90’s. The newer KI is a great game, but unfortunately they gave him all the MMA stuff. His backstory does mention Jack Johnson though, and there was a planned but canceled Windows phone boxing game app based around the character.

    First of all, I actually enjoy the video. It was surprisingly entertaining. I thought it would be more informative than entertaining. It was still informative. Next point, I totally agree with your list with the order and everything. Last point, Steve and balrog both have the stomp. Steve also have some actual throws not just boxing throws and he also have a jump kick as well. Yes, Steve fox was well researched and for those who want to play an authentic boxer, it gets no more authentic then Steve fox, in which it inspires me to lab and eventually alt this character.

    None of them emulate the sport quite like Steve Fox. He is as complete as i think it's ever gonna get. Dudley is my personal favourite but Steve Fox is easily the best representation of boxing in a fighting game.
    Honestly don't know how anyone would put TG Combo above Steve Fox. I think people are arguing an an emotional preference than anything else rather than analysing it logically.

    Just found out they worked with an actual boxer who is unnamed right now on Street Fighter 6. Also, I don't know if you've heard of a game called DNF duel but they are releasing a character called Monk who is also a boxer. I would say the best representation is definitely got to be Steve Fox. We don't have a lot of well developed 3D fighter boxers and a lot of the 2D boxers will they're kind of the same? Ed is a new spin. But what about Little Mac?

      Some moves you won't really see get used in combo videos though. Dudley's sway dash and counterpunch obviously are more defensive/reactive tools that he does in response to his opponent's attacks which you won't really see in combo videos where he's purely on the offensive.

    Tbf there isn’t really any competition when we talk about Tekken’s Steve Fox
    Tekken allows the most elements of boxing thanks to 3d plane of movement
    And then we have everyone in the same bag, all of them punch, some have can do things like ducking, swaying and such but it’s not really boxing it’s simply not having any kick moves
    Ed in SF6 is pretty alright, utilises flicker jabs, doesn’t kick, even has some ducking tho it doesn’t actually „duck” any moves
    Dudley is in the same bag with a bit less boxing moves but still pretty straight forward boxing
    Balrog plays like a big dude not really a boxer, he can sway fireballs… and that is it tho, the only thing that makes him a boxer is how you play him, big defense, counter punches

      Ed is a street fighter boxer, outside of street fighter, he'd literally be Steve, about the same moves, Ed is more of a boxer in 6 rather than 5, Ed has no kicks at all, Steve has a couple kicks, Balrog is a dirty boxer but a boxer, and TJ in KI original is an easy boxer, with multiple combos and rushes that are real boxing techniques, unfortunately they did make him Kickboxing in KI, but it fits if you know the lore of the game, having to fight robots, having to get implants to keep up with genetically enhanced fighters. Fighting game mechanics doesn't decide if a boxer is a boxer or not, if they have rooted boxing techniques including real boxing techniques, including the Ali Shuffle, they are a boxer, fighting game mechanics aside.

    • @stiffmidget4036
      @stiffmidget4036 6 місяців тому

      @BlackjackHG21 simply doing a boxing move doesn't make you a boxer. As soon as you start adding in the other stuff, it's no longer pure. That's what's in question here; who is the best pure boxer?

    • @BlackjackHG21
      @BlackjackHG21 6 місяців тому

      @@stiffmidget4036 so in that jaded instance Steve isn't a boxer because he implements a couple kicks and has a jumping stomp, which I am pretty sure isn't a real boxing technique, your attempted logic doesn't add up

    • @BlackjackHG21
      @BlackjackHG21 6 місяців тому

      @@stiffmidget4036 Ed was also mocapped by an unnamed professional boxer and he has insanely good footwork, zipping in and out of the background and foreground, the only "3D" character in Street Fighter. Balrog trained him to be a traditional boxer and they even competed in professional boxing matches and Ed fitting Street Fighter put bits and pieces of Psycho Power into his boxing creating a form he calls Psycho Boxing, using psycho power to enhance his already excellent boxing skills, like creating psycho shadows to mixup the opponent, or put psycho power behind his punches to increase his range like the flicker jab, he has a lot of other boxing techniques. They're are not a lot of pure boxers in fighting games having nothing but real boxing and nothing else, but that is just the reality of fighting games, every character needs mechanics that make them good, and traditional pure boxing doesn't really cover that, Steve, the best pure boxer in fighting games, even implements some of these tactics, using slight low kicks, jumping and stomping the feet of his opponents and exaggerated dodging punches that wouldn't go well in pure boxing, because that's not what makes a good fighting game character, if you are so bent on pure boxing in your game, go play Ippo, which most of these characters are inspired by, or Fight Night, or some other boxing game, maybe even punch out, which I would recommend.

      For a fighting game character to be a boxer, it needs to be their sole or at least the most heavily emphasized fighting style.
      That means their attacks must be almost entirely punches.
      That definitely does not apply for Mila, who has plenty of kicks, knees and her overall gameplay is heavily based around setting up takedowns.
      Calling a fighting game character a boxer becomes redundant if we count any character who has some boxing in there. It needs to almost exclusively boxing for it to count.

    TJ exists in a realm where Boxing is a rigged sport put on by the rich and powerful, where humans have to use everything at there disposal to win, so he is more Kickboxing than regular boxing. Out of most I've seen or played, Steve is the most accurate with the a couple of kicks for regular fg coverage, Ed is easily the most accurate in SF6, no kicks at all, and he uses signature boxing maneuvers like the Ali shuffle and the Dempsey roll, which Steve does too. Other really good ones are Dudley in Third Strike and Heavy D in Fatal Fury and early KOF, Balrog is amazing, but he is known as a dirty boxer. Dark horse entries are Tiffany Lords from Rival Schools and Akihiko Sanada from Persona Arena, two of my personal favs from there respective games too.

    Nice video. While not a fan of the real sport, I always respects boxer archetype in fighting games when it's done right. Balrog is one of my mains in classic SF2, and I like playing Dudley and Vanessa too. Two notes from me:
    1) While Balrog is indeed a grandfather of all fighting games' boxers in terms of establishing the archetype of boxer, as we all knows he never uses a kick, knee, fireballs and other such things in a fight, and all of his 6 buttons in SF2 were just different punches and jabs, the first Street Fighter game (1987) already had a character named Mike who was... a afro-american boxer who visually shares a lot with Balrog. But SF1 was so generic in terms of characters design, this character was extremely bland, boring in a playstyle and had no personality at all - it was a smart move from Capcom not to carry him to the sequel and to create a brand new boxer character there. Just to mention the facts. (Oh, and don't forget that Balrog raises and train Ed from a childhood - he's the one who made Ed the boxer guy and not some kind of eastern martial arts disciple or just mean street brawler!)
    2) Probably, the only other notable and well designed boxer from fighting games that you're missed is Heavy D! from The King of Fighters '94 and '98. He's quite accurate boxing guy who's comprises American Sports Team in SNK's fighting universe where he's representing the boxing as a sport, and speaking of his buttons, style and moveset, he's resembles Balrog and Dudly. But I think you will give him a slightly lower rating because while he's not using feet for damage and has no real projectiles (though some of his moves makes "energy splashes" increasing the range of the attacks), he uses some non-realistic tricks like earthshaking floor punches. And, sadly, despite being well received by fans, in SNK universe this dude is an eternal loser, as American Sports Team is an object of old running gag: they being beaten and lost its invitation before almost every KoF tournament. Because of that, he's playable character only in these two chapters of KoF series.

    Tekken as a game is more akin to boxing than a 2D fighter, so no matter who the character was it was most certainly gonna be from tekken. No disrespect to Steve fox, but i feel he’s mostly the best because of the game and not the actual character. In street fighter x tekken for example he was a pretty whack excuse for a boxer because 2D fighters aren’t built for boxers.
    But Ed is very underrated, his powers make him feel jarring at first glance but he uses his powers in ways that only a boxer would think of, like making his flicker jab more lethal and more ranged or turning guys into literal punching bags for his super. And it helps to actually play him with a boxing mentality, being patient and out ranging them with flickers and waiting for an opening is vital for that character. You basically are player a mix of Thomas hearns and Floyd Mayweather on psycho steroids.
