This video is exactly what I needed. It's my first time ever making an Afghan and following a purely written pattern and now I have great confidence! Thank you!!♥️
If not for you I would never have been able to successfully make this beautiful afghan. I thought that I would lose my mind but eventually it all came together. I had to put you on slo-mo some and it was quite hilarious listening to you. Awesome instructional video. On row 16 and moving along swimmingly now! Thanks so much!
I would just like to thank you for posting this most helpful tutorial. I was about to give up on the pattern and was so happy to find this, I don't think I could have done it without this video and I have a lot of years experience as a crocheter. Lots of pauses and rewinds but after about 10 rows I was finally able to fly solo. THANKS AGAIN!!!
ohmygoodness! thank you SO much for making this video. I was getting SO frustrated last night trying to read the pattern and eventually just frogged it. tonight i can start over with your video to assist. thank you. thank you. thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I really wanted to make this afghan for my m-i-l; but I was really struggling with trying to understand the different cable patterns and was ready to give up. You made what stitch went where so clear that I just finished it. And, now I completely understand the importance of stitch makers. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this tutorial. I have had this pattern saved for a while, but never had the chance to start it, since it felt like there was a lot going on. This "cleared up the waters" for me!!
Thank you! I just couldn't get the FPTRCROSS right from the written pattern. I had to slow the video down to 25% speed, but I've got it now. Thank you!
question for others: on row 4 of the 17 pattern (around 42:10), she calls out and does a Front post double, but the pattern calls for a treble. not sure which is correct because in row 2 it calls for FPDC instead. so I am leaning toward Tamara being correct and the pattern having a typo.
on second thought I tried both out and found that the FPTRebel for row 2 and 4 let it lie flatter and have a straighter top line, but it does give slightly larger gaps on the twist chain. I think one can just choose what they like best but be aware that there is a typo on either line 2 or 4 of the pattern 3
Thank you, would not even dream of trying this Afghan with out this Video! wish i could make my stitches as neat as yours are. Making most of my work for kids grand and great grand kids. on your sample it ended with the 17 section and 3 count. confused me because the whole Afghan ends with 11 and 3 count. thinking i did it all wrong started over :) i figured it out no special stop and starts. same on each begging and end. Thank you so much for this video!!
I'm working on this afghan and i noticed it's very airy. the gaps between stitches are pretty big. I wish the pattern would have a better image of the blanket. I found some close up images on Ravelry in case anyone else is interested. Thank you for the tutorial, It's very helpful. It's definitely begins to work up quickly after the foundation row+ 4 cable rows.
Loved the video and your instructions and teaching technique are very clear. One piece of advice I would give is it would be much better to use a darker yarn against the light background. A coloured yarn with some contrast would make it much easier to see the stitches at times. Otherwise loved it.
I've had to alter this myself to be able to make it since I can't read written pattern. I multiplied your work by 3. When doing this I found out your sample work was 37 st and I got 111 as my total. That didn't work because I had 2 extra sections of 3. So back to paper and pen I went. Wrote out the 3-11-3-17-3 like so (3-11-3-17-3,11-3-17-3,11-3-17-3) and got 105. Bingo ready to work. I'm now at row 4 and have had no problems being able to follow along and actually make this. With the exception that my final project will be slightly different because I won't have the puffs on each side but only on the 1. My question is which rows are the repeats. Rows 1 thru 4? Rows 2 thru 4 or rows 3 and 4. Sorry. I've read all comments and I've tried to read the pattern which just confuses me more. Also have a friend who crochets. She can read written pattern and is stumped too. Please help ASAP
Counting the foundation row as row 1 you repeat rows 2-5 to the length that you wish then I recommend a row of double crochet to make the ends even :) hope this helps
At time stamp 16:44 where you clearly create a TREBLE front post crochet, you actually say DOUBLE front post crochet! I've been there too, my hands do one thing yet I'm saying something else when I help new crochet enthusiasts to learn a pattern. Going to the Celtic Afghan pattern, it IS indeed treble front post crochets that are created here.
Does anyone know how to handle the 9 FPTC on row 5 on the 17 stitch section? It doesn’t work the way the other rows work since the FPTC go behind the slipped stitches
When you come back to do the second row, in the 17 section, are you doing front post double or front post treble? You say double but it looks like you're doing a treble.
I'm sorry to keep asking so many questions so please bear with me. My sister would love this afghan and picked lion brand Hometown USA yarn. It is a super bulky yarn #6 . I was wondering if this would work out ok. I realize I would need to adjust my hook size a bit but was wondering your thoughts? I also tend to work a bit tightly. Thanks so much. Think this should be my last question for you. Didn't want to buy the yarn and not like the result. This will be my first advanced pattern. Your instruction will help!!! ❤️
Hi Catherine! It will work, but it'll be BIG! :P You'll want to use an S hook, most likely. This pattern uses a much larger hook than normal for the yarn. So you'll need a lot more yarn too. Please note that the Hometown USA skeins have a lot less yardage than Vanna's Choice as well.
Thank You Tamara!! Can you be so kind as to tell me how to make this larger? i.e. to have 6 repeats of the pattern? What is the repeat plus? How many stitches would I have to chain? I am going to use a smaller hook so it isn't so holey. Don't like my toes popping out! lol
Judy Calevro Masell Hi Judy! This pattern isn't quite that simple to upsize, I'm afriad. uou would need to figure out which sections you wish to repeat and then, chain an additional amount for those. Using the long chain method should help if you aren't sure exactly how many to chain but have a rough estimate :)
I think I figured it out. I am using 34 plus 19. For a 4 cable repeat I chained 155 which is 4 x 34 plus 19. I also used the same formula for a 5 cable repeat by chaining 189... or 5 x 34 plus 19. Both made the pattern perfectly.
Thank you for this Tamara! I would agree with the other comments here; I would have never figured it out with out this. I did have one question however. After you have gone through the for rows, you ( presumably) start over with the row 1 with all the cable patterns. My question is, with the puff stitch, do you BPTC around the back "cross" and then puff in the next stitch, like you showed in the row 3?
If I understand your question, the answer is yes. Rows 1 and 3 of cable pattern 2 are the same. Since you already have the cable pattern established, you'll be working the following row 1's the same as row 3. Hope that helps/makes sense!
Thanks!! Just a question, I've been crocheting for 2 years on and off, just making stuff here and there, so please bear with my question if it's a bit noobie. Could I add 2 more stitches in my chain, so that at the beginning and at the end I could have a normal DC (for instance) and reserve the sections of 3 for "real" front-back-front? It is bothering me that the first and last stitch cannot be more (back/front) post-ish lol. Do I make sense?
I downloaded this pattern. I'm using Hobbii Mega Ball yarn. Idk how to make a swatch gauge. It recommended a 9 mm hook. It looked like utter crap! I dropped down to the size recommended by the yarn label. 5.5 mm. I've got to remove the first row of my cable row. I'm off by 1 stitch! 🤦 I will conquer this! Wish me luck!
Hello I am having a problem with this pattern. When you turn for your third roll on my piece I'm starting with 3 then 11 but the tutorial is 3 then 17,am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great as this looks beautiful.
frances mcdonald Follow the sections called for in the pattern - the video shows each section, but the written pattern is what you want to reference for the order
Hi Tamra. I would love to try this pattern but could you please tell me how many chains you used in the foundation row of you mini blanket in the video? I find perfecting the pattern on a smaller scale is the best way for me to learn. Thank you in advance! Gina
It sounds like your personal tension level is looser than the designers, so if you find the fabric better with a smaller hook then use that! The finishing blanket might be a little bit smaller.
I've been trying to do this pattern for awhile (it's for a 4-h project) and I'm doing it 48 x 60 like the pattern says but I can't seem to get it right. I thought I had to end with 3 on the end but I'm ending in the middle of cable pattern 2. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if you can help.
Thanx for the video. I must ask are the clover brand Crochet hooks smaller then the boye brand hooks? Have do have a size m/n 9mm hook, but it looks a lot bigger than the one you’re using in the tutorial?
This is SO helpful! Thank you! One question... on Row 4, it says "working BEHIND 3 sts just worked, FPTR around 3 skipped sts." I don't understand how you can do this BEHIND the sts worked. Any tips?
Hi Kim! Don't be afraid to "manhandle" the blanket, and pull those stitches forward out of the way so you can make room to crochet behind them. I demo this starting at about minute 40 in this video. :)
I LOVE this design. Thank you for posting the video! I really have no experience reading patterns but I have done these stitches before. So, I am thinking of trying it... Have a couple projects already in the works but this is so pretty... What other yarns would be good with this? Thanks...
Just reading the pattern, I would never figure out the stitches without the video. Not sure I can do it even with the video, as my stitches are not as easy to read as yours are.
hi Tamara, the yarn you are using is a #4? It looks thicker than mine, and mine is a 4, but another brand. Please advise, will this make a big difference? Thank you!
I noticed when you did your puff stitch you didn't close it off by doing a chain. I thought a chain over top was necessary to close it others it runs the risk of opening up?
The next stitch will help hold it closed. You can do it with a chain at the end if you like - that's how I like to do it when I design personally, but you do need to be careful about stitch counts. :)
Tamara Kelly thanks so much. I don't write patterns and even though I prefer to do the puff with a chain will do this one as written. I'm not sure how much the chain would throw off the pattern.
Catherine Montalbano-Harris not much as long as you skip the chain stitch I've been chaining them closed cause that's how I thought you had to do it and stumbled upon this video today... Doing so much wrong but it's still very beautiful so I'm just going to continue as is
I wanted to make it bigger as well. the trick to estimating the size is to take the # of double chains (119 which equals ~48in.) and ratio to how many chains you would need. then add in sets of the pattern to get closest to the chain length. ex: queen bed converter width is ~86-90". 90X119/48=223. 223 doesn't fit the pattern multiples but 219 does which would be really close at around 88in. for length I found that 4 rows are approx.3.25" and .75" for the top and bottom. so for queen 90-100" length. that would be about 29 repeats of the 4 row pattern. I would start with 221(119+3) single chain ( measure to double check ). the pattern will end up being (3,11,3,17)6 times and 3,11,3. if that's too small just add some more in multiples of 14,20, or 34. For kings I would double everything.
"Save ur bacon".. Lol so funny. After watching this a couple times I think I feel secure enough to try this. Just wondering the best way to keep track of my rows of 4. How many rows total out of curiosity?
Catherine Montalbano-Harris keeping track of rows is very easy with this pattern because of the braided cable stitches but you can always use stitch markers if need be
Just started this afghan.. my sister loved it so I decided to make it for her. Two rows in and am already disappointed. The pattern is beautiful but not enjoying working with the yarn. It's thin and it splits. I think this would have worked up better with a different yarn but considering I purchased the kit am stuck. It's a time consuming pattern and I Will continue but I am really hoping that it's everything my sister wanted. I take great pride in my crochet and this is not living up to my expectations. Anyone else feeling the same way?
Catherine Montalbano-Harris I'm not a fan of Vannas choice yarn... I used the springly yarn acrylic super bulky with a 6.5mm hook and even though you have to get 2x the amount of yarn it's turning out beautiful... And big very big
Although somewhat helpful, it would have been nice to see more detailed instruction on how the rows actually ended. I can't even count how many times I had to rewind this because I got confused as to what was happening and in which order. I get that it was only a sample, but it wasn't easy to see either with the off white on white. If you do go by this video you should probably just watch it first in its entirety and then just follow instructions on paper. Or skip the video altogether.
Puff stitches are some of the trickier stitches to make look nice! I would suggest you try swapping the puff stitches for popcorn stitches - much stabler and still great texture!
I'm thinking maybe it would be easier to see the stitches more clearly if you used a smaller crochet hook... This yarn is thinner than most 4 weight yarns so it looks so loose & the stitches are not as clear, to me, as those with heavier yarn or smaller hooks. You are very good at explaining what you are doing but I am getting old & the eyes "ain't what they used to be"... (like everything else). lol...

I don’t understand why these tutorial teachers don’t include these in their descriptions!!!!
Some do on occasion.

Thanks for using the markers.
Omg I've been trying to figure this one out for months. This will help a lot thanks
I thought I was misreading those sections of 3. Will def use a ton of stitch markers..that will help so much
I'm so glad to hear it! :D Good luck!
These front post treble cross stitches may be a problem. Lol
Awesome tutorial. Love the stitch markers. Great idea. You showed this tutorial amazingly.
How absolutely BEAUTIFUL 😍

Barbara Arnold could you tell me how you figured this out,it's driving me nuts. Thank you
@@francesmcdonald7545 Help I have the same problem. Please Frances McDonald did you just continue the pattern as though it was the 11 stitch pattern?

Very nice. I will be making this for my son in law
I would like to make this 2 color, striped. Do you think that would work?
Beautiful blanket! Thank you for sharing your video. Love 💕 it!
Row 2: 14:24 ( cable pattern 2 row 2 19:48 ( FPTRCross) ) Row 3: 27:16 Row 4: 38:02

So I just realized you said their all 4 row repeats. I take that as I repeat rows 1 thru 4. Hope I'm right. Loving this pattern

When you come back to do the second row, in the 17 section, are you doing front post double or front post treble? You say double but it looks like you're doing a treble.
Oh. My. Gawd. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS VIDEO!
I'm sorry to keep asking so many questions so please bear with me. My sister would love this afghan and picked lion brand Hometown USA yarn. It is a super bulky yarn #6 . Judy Calevro Masell Hi Judy! This pattern isn't quite that simple to upsize, I'm afriad. uou would need to figure out which sections you wish to repeat and then, chain an additional amount for those. If I understand your question, the answer is yes. Rows 1 and 3 of cable pattern 2 are the same. Since you already have the cable pattern established, you'll be working the following row 1's the same as row 3. Hope that helps/makes sense!
Absolutely beautiful Tamara
Yes! It's what I probably would've done if I'd written the pattern. ;)
Tamara Kelly Thanks! I thought I was misunderstanding something and there was some reason not to do it :D
Wish me luck!
what to do if i wanted a larger size . can İ repeat some cable pattern twice on both sides for example ? and what would the stich count be ?
Hello I am having a problem with this pattern. When you turn for your third roll on my piece I'm starting with 3 then 11 but the tutorial is 3 then 17,am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great as this looks beautiful.
frances mcdonald Follow the sections called for in the pattern - the video shows each section, but the written pattern is what you want to reference for the order
yeah you are right that is how it works out in the written pattern for me too
Hi Tamra. I would love to try this pattern but could you please tell me how many chains you used in the foundation row of you mini blanket in the video? I find perfecting the pattern on a smaller scale is the best way for me to learn. Thank you in advance!
Gina
how important to use the M hook? Mine was so sloppy looking, I'd prefer an L or K...is there a reason that this design needs this loose of a stitch?
It sounds like your personal tension level is looser than the designers, so if you find the fabric better with a smaller hook then use that! The finishing blanket might be a little bit smaller.
I'm using a L hook but my tension is loose so the size ends up matching the Gauge length. that's the best way to tell.
Thank you so much for this!! I'd also like to mention you sound so much like Molly Ringwald hahah
Ooo, that's a new one! :D Thank you, I think!
This is a great tutorial!! Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO & PATTERN !
aaaaaahhhhhhh! I'm doing this blanket right now!!!!!
Great video. I enjoyed it. Thanks for the share.
Can we adjust it to be a shawl
what if one wanted to use this stitch type for stockings/socks?
There are lovely cabled sock patterns out there! :)
I LOVE this design. Thank you for posting the video! I really have no experience reading patterns but I have done these stitches before. So, I am thinking of trying it... Have a couple projects already in the works but this is so pretty...
What other yarns would be good with this? Thanks...
Any worsted/aran will work to keep it about the same size, but you could always scale it up or down by changing the yarn weight too! :)
Just reading the pattern, I would never figure out the stitches without the video. Not sure I can do it even with the video, as my stitches are not as easy to read as yours are.
this is beautiful, thanks so much!
hi Tamara, the yarn you are using is a #4? It looks thicker than mine, and mine is a 4, but another brand. Please advise, will this make a big difference? Thank you!
Yes, it's a 4! Since it's a blanket, I wouldn't worry too much about sizing issues within the same yarn weight category. :)
Doing so much wrong but it's still very beautiful so I'm just going to continue as is
Have you tried this using a smaller needle? I'm thinking of making it for a baby girl..wonder if pattern would disappear.
I think as long as you also use a thinner yarn, it could work! :)
thanks
Any suggestions? : how can İ make this for a double sized bed ?
Double everything??
Thank you!
In second row section 17 you say double crochet but video you are doing treble crochets?
It's entirely possible I misspoke, I would go by the written pattern when in doubt!
Is there a LEFT HANDED version?
I'm sorry, I was working with a different company on this project and a left-handed version is not currently available.
Your hand is blocking the first 3 stitch section I can't see to compare if I did it correctly or not.
"Save ur bacon".. Lol so funny. After watching this a couple times I think I feel secure enough to try this. Just wondering the best way to keep track of my rows of 4. How many rows total out of curiosity?
Catherine Montalbano-Harris keeping track of rows is very easy with this pattern because of the braided cable stitches but you can always use stitch markers if need be
Thanks I will be starting this soon.
and now I actually see the Errata documenting the error I noted in the video - d'oh!
Some of the awkward moves made in this pattern remind me a bit of the Arrowhead stitch pattern. After awhile it becomes more do-able...
Thank you for doing this video! I can not wait to crochet this! Do you think tassels would be a good touch?
Oh yes, I think that would be very fun! :D
Thank you thank you thank you for the video!!!!!!!
So pretty, i cant read patterns, I've tried
Just started this afghan.. my sister loved it so I decided to make it for her. Two rows in and am already disappointed. The pattern is beautiful but not enjoying working with the yarn. It's thin and it splits. I think this would have worked up better with a different yarn but considering I purchased the kit am stuck. It's a time consuming pattern and I Will continue but I am really hoping that it's everything my sister wanted. I take great pride in my crochet and this is not living up to my expectations. Anyone else feeling the same way?
***** thanks I was thinking of giving it another try with diff yarn and smaller hook
Catherine Montalbano-Harris I'm not a fan of Vannas choice yarn... I used the springly yarn acrylic super bulky with a 6.5mm hook and even though you have to get 2x the amount of yarn it's turning out beautiful... And big very big
What weight is this yarn?
4 - Worsted/Aran :)
I want to do this so bad but so intimidating. I’ll be pausing and putting on super slow motion for sure.
On row three, you skipped over the DC after the first pattern.
I thought I was doing well until I hit row 3.
Because its no longer free and i like a challenge. So everyone knows count is 37+3 (I made mine bigger then patter)
I confess I rage quit once you started created the new puff stitches I can't figure out and it looks horrid so I ain't doing it rihgt
(like everything else). lol...
I used the hook and yarn called for in the pattern. :) But you can change it up if you like!
