Joe Calzaghe reunited with former foe Jeff Lacy

  • In 2006 Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy fought Joe Calzaghe in a Super Middleweight world title unification fight at Manchester's MEN Arena which Calzaghe won by unanimous decision.
Ten years later Lacy flew back across the Atlantic to meet his conqueror in Calzaghe's home town of Newbridge, South Wales. The first meeting since that epic fight gave Lacy the chance to relive the memories of a fight which has haunted him ever since and which defined both men's careers.

Joe Calzaghe was the full package. High Work rate, physically strong, volume puncher and technical gifted south paw. Lacy had no chance. I've never seen such a one sided demolition for a unification fight.

I remember watching the fight, with my dad. And wow! I have always liked boxing, but watching this fight with my dad, just made it way more special to me. We were both rooting for Calzaghe, because of his incredible punching speed and how many punches he could throw, AND LAND! It was incredible. And a real bonding experience for me and my dad. Props too for Lacy, he showed a true fighters heart, never give up, never surrender, and put up one hell of a match.
Too bad I was a Kessler fan, though, my favourites boxer had his first loss to Calzaghe.
Still... No one can ever blame anyone for loosing to Calzaghe, what a boxer, what a sportsman, what a gentleman and what a Legend!

Yet they talk about every other boxer and legends of boxing every champ out there but never mention Joe ,there's countries around the world that never heard of him yet he beat their idols that they follow. Respect to anyone who boxes and especially these two boxers. It is interesting hearing Lacy describe his difficulty dealing with his first defeat. He echoes Hatton after his career ended with a bang. Neither once considered the prospect of losing and were completely unable to handle it. When it came for both, it was the beginning of a rapid end. Losing, not winning, it seems, reveals a man's true character.

Lacy's corner left him in with Calzaghe too long. He was a punchbag for 12 solid rounds and I don't think you can ever recover mentally from that, going from unbeaten to totally beaten-up will damage your self-belief. Better for Lacy if he'd been knocked out early.
