It looks cool! I was checking out my attic in my old house and it looks big for a conversion into a room or at least a hang out space / storage space since the pitch is pretty tall and it spans a good 700 sqft at least, just gotta plaster around the old fireplace in the middle
For me it actually cost me more to do it myself. I think that it was that I did it as I could afford it. It was also a bit of a learning curve! Still worth it at sign off.
Shame that it cost you more to do it yourself, maybe you did it to a high spec, maybe if the trade quote was to a high spec it would have been way more ?
@@diydan1394 Hi Dan, the quote was low £20k, ended up costing me almost £30k. Had to re do some of the work the initial builders did before decided to do myself, as building control were not happy with workmanship.
Goodness me Dan! Super Awesome Effort there Brother! Hell, I'd be open minded to ask you offer project management on my home reno plans - including the loft! (yes, I'm serious!)
Hi Dan, looks like an amazing conversion, well done! Any chance you would be willing to share your technical/structal plan drawings? I'm doing an engineering course atm and we are studying loft conversions and have been told to try and contact people who have had ones and look as the drawings to learn from them. It would really help me out if you could, please elet me know, thankyou!
Very impressed with the work carried out! Why did you go for the wooden joist support as opposed to steel beams? I think you did a great job and it feels like its more practical and makes more sense this way, and I'm hoping to do something similar, if I can use wooden joists it would save me a lot of height as my loft is a low ceiling. Is it just down to load bearing walls or was the engineer happy to use wooden joists how you did to support the floor better than steel beams?
The house is split into two section of two rooms one ground floor and one first floor and in the middle of these room runs two walls top to bottom of the house where the first floor stairs are housed. We desided to runs a parallel set of stairs above the original in the space, this has very little disruption to the original first floor rooms. 😊
I followed instructions from my structural engineer, building regs change over time but this was all done correctly and signed off. 😊 12 mm air gap between insulation and original breathable roof membrane? Hope this helps x
Very nice mate good job. I know you have done it but all the research I've done before watching your video on loads of sites say you don't need planning permission as long as it dose not surpass the the rest of the building width wise. Did your architect recommend this put forward to council thanks but we'll done
I didn't need planning permission but the plans were submitted so the council could see exactly what I planned to do and to ensure this got signed off as an official bedroom. I kept in close contact with the council and had them out to check each part I did so at the end of the build they had already seen all the structural work undertaken this made it quicker and easier for them to sign off.
Just get somone in to give you some ideas, they may take measurements and let you know the best way of getting round the height... There's always a way 😊

Dan did you have electrics rewired? What about plumbing
Went with electric oil filled radiators so no plumbing and we had electrics installed for new lights sockets then signed off.

Happy?
How did you support the rafters and trusses, before cutting them out.
They had already been taken out when we bought the house. 😊
@@diydan1394 How did they support it?
great diy conversion but Dan next time you need to follow a scripted over voice that word ERM i lost count im sure around the 300 mark
Well done man
Thank you x
Brilliant but I would have thought first step would be check the roof for leeks
Don't grow very well up there.
Did you need to get a party wall agreement for the wood on the adjoining walls?
I didn't actually, this was never raised by my architects, council 😊 please always take advice from your architect and check current building regs 😊

Wooden joists are taller than steels
Brilliant well done ✨✨✨👌🏻
Thank you x
Amazing and Inspiring
Thank you
Where do your stairs come up from? The landing?

Thanks mate👍
Hi Dan, did the £8K include architect and structural engineer costs? Thanks
It did yes 😊
How the hell did you get away with not installing larger rafters to support the additional weight from the insulation and boards etc? 12mm air gap?
I followed instructions from my structural engineer, building regs change over time but this was all done correctly and signed off. 😊 12 mm air gap between insulation and original breathable roof membrane? Hope this helps x

Hi, thanks for making your video, very useful, if you don't mind telling me how much was your architecture fees, thanks, helene
looks great! how long did it take?
I worked weekends and after work so hard to put a time on it. Maybe 5weeks work full time
Well done
Thank you x
did you have to get any planning permission for this? how long did the whole project take you?
Hi no I didn't you only need planning if you add a dormer window, it took me around 2months in between working full time too.
@@diydan1394 I really loved your creativeness and end product.I am looking to make a diy loft conversion too. Please let me know if you are interested.
You need planning permissions only if you are converting the loft into a room, by law all living rooms in the UK must have a proper exit route
How much did the architect cost?
Is that cost included in your £8,000 costs?
Yes included if I remember it was arround 900
What were the main tools that you used?
Nothing special... Circular saw, drill/screw driver, spirit level... Simple tools nothing major 😊
Hi how much was the height of the loft?
3m but then you have to add flooring joists and insulation which takes up lots of the room.
@@diydan1394 my lofts only 2 meters high so no go then.
Just get somone in to give you some ideas, they may take measurements and let you know the best way of getting round the height... There's always a way 😊

What size joists did you use
4" x 7" C24 😊 very strong
Is that right 4 inch by 7 inch??
Yes C24
Over what length did they span? Thats some strong wood lol
4m 😊
Did not add any heating?
No I added an electric radiator later on, it was always a nice temperature. 😊
No vapour barrier? I’ll give it a few years before your timbers start to rot.
erm...
Erm
Errmmm.. I have cut down on the Emmms in my other videos 😊 sorry x
Erm erm erm erm
I know sorry x.. It waa my first video lol
"Erm... erm... erm... erm... erm..."
I can't take it anymore!
(Turns off UA-cam)
I know 🤣 sorry about that, it was one of my earlier videos. Have you tryed "how to fix a broken fence post" 😊
Did you have a water tank in your loft?
