thanks for saying this I completely and totally agree. even IGN scarcely has a game review that’s longer than a page these days. It really is criminal what’s happened to journalism and information across the board
To me. Shogun 2 and Nobunaga’s Ambition represent 2 sides of the Sengoku Strategy Game coin. One excels at the politics and more delicate matters of running a clan. While the other excels at large and very controllable field battles. All I hope is we get a game that’s a perfect hybrid of the two.
@@FaithfulFumoFan23 I wouldn't say that Warhammer as a bad decision. The problem with CA started before that, roughly around Empire: Total War and the creation of Warscape engine. Basically, they got lazy and started to "simplify" the mechanics of the game with each game after Empire. Now, most players of the current generation probably didn't play the old game of the Total War series and the oldest they played is probably Medieval 2 and fewer still, Rome 1 (though after the remaster, it's probably a lot more now). As such, most probably not familiar with the quality of Total War game in its early days when compared to other games available at the time Vs what CA have released nowadays. After all, old games look dated from a modern perspective. To that, you only need to read the manual for Shogun:Total War, the first game, i.e Shogun 1. Not the paper/pdf files but rather the html files that were included in the game in the form of a wiki (it was before Wikipedia even existed at that time but that's the closest I can describe it). Then compare it to what you get when you play Shogun 2. You'll notice that there's a lot of similarity but also slight difference in what it promises. In fact, if you are able to tolerate the bad graphics of Shogun 1 and play it, you'll be able to see the difference between the gameplay and mechanics of the two clearly after several hours of playing. Just like 3K and WH, Shogun 1 has hero units (the Kensai) but he's not overpowered like in those games as even ashigaru can kill them. It has gunpowder units, yet for it's destructive power and effect on morale, it was balanced due to how fiddly it is as well as being very sensitive to weather conditions. Every clan has access to the same unit type with the only difference between getting firearms early or warrior monks. All have the same stats but each clans has different bonus modifiers. The territory you recruited them will also give bonus modifiers on certain units like Shimano for cavalry. 3 ashigaru can rout 2 samurai and 1 yari samurai on a hill map, in the right condition and with a good general (and difficulty setting), defend a province against a full stack army (river too difficult because of enemy bows unless you have another unit, like a cavalry unit). Every quote from Art of War in the offline wiki is actually tips because it points to the key mechanics of the game. It's not a stats battle and units won't try to fight 1v1 like heroes but rather act like a unit, it's all about tactics because no matter how high the quality of your troops are, trained at the right place, you can still lose when well placed ashigaru broke your army morale. Those are the quality that is missing from Total War.

This is incredible! like others have stated why do you not have more views? Thank you for all the time you put into your videos I am glad I found this channel and I have picked up a copy of this game because of your review.
Thank you for this review. I discovered Nobunaga’s Ambition back in the 90’s with the first and second versions of this game. Back then, when you Daimyo would die, the game would end. Something I discovered when the leader of my clan died. I can still remember my feeling of lost and dispair and the cry I left out still echoes in my ears. I blame this game of making me addicted to turn based conquest games that robbed me of countless hours of sleep, while filling me with the joy of ruling the wold. I still play this game today and I agree with you that it deserves a 10 out of 10 rating.
Excellent review, I agree on all points, the Nobunaga's Ambition games will always have a special place in my heart. This is my favorite Nobunaga's Ambition game, the first one I played was the really really old one that came out on PC, I think it may even be the first one in the series. My dad played it because grand strategy games are his favorite genre, and he got me into the series and the series itself got me into Japanese culture and history of the Sengoku era. One thing you didn't touch on were the unlockable characters that you gain after clearing different starting dates. The characters range from wives and concubines of warlords, to minor people of the era or people of dubious historicity who were nonetheless famous in folklore of the era, such as Ishikawa Goemon, Kashin Koji or the Ten Braves of Sanada, characters from the epic novel Satomi Hakkenden, as well as people from previous eras of Japanese history, such as Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, Minamoto-no-Yorimitsu and his four guardians, Ota Dokan and more. One of my favorite playthroughs that I've done in fact was with a clan I created that started out as just Minamoto-no-Yorimitsu and his four guardians in one castle.
Wish there was a Total War Shogun 3 with recruitable historical daimyos and generals such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, or other memorable figures from the Sengoku period. It's quite a big possibility that Total War can do this with the 3 kingdoms release as the game has many historic figures from that era. The only thing I disliked about Shogun 2 are the generals, most of them are randomized. Can't recruit many characters I liked from the Sengoku period like Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the famous Oda generals. Only Nobunaga and the major clans' daimyo are the real figures, the rest are just fictitious.
Also add a custom mode where you can make your own clan and make other custom clans that to be put in the game whether or not they are your allies And perhaps a DLC to the Imjin War And/or Mongol invasion
All they had to do was implement Avatar Conquest in the main campaign. The multiplayer became trash anyway when they released the DLC units. Wish there was more campaign DLC though FoTS is obviously a masterpiece and RoTS is fun sometimes.
My favorite Sengoku game is definitely Sengoku Rance. It's neither as deep nor detailed as Shogun 2 Total War or Nobunaga's Ambition, but it definitely makes for very exciting gameplay. The battles, while simple, can be difficult to win, but winning them always comes with great rewards, so you're always motivated.
I started playing this game and I love it so far. An epic moment came when Mitsuhide fell under the mercy of my created Taira clan who is faithful to the Oda. He begged to be spared but I was like "Nope. Die bish." 😂 (This was set after Honnoji)
I have been playing Nobunaga's Ambition since I first discovered it on the NES, along with it's chinese counterpart, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Two of the best pure strategy franchise's ever developed for gaming. The only gripe I had with this version of N.A. was that the game scaled to allow anyone to win with any strategy. For this reason I still hold out for Iron Triangle to be the best in this series, and the hardest. Nonetheless, I have greatly enjoyed Sphere of Influence and most especially the expanded historical scenes and information. Good video.
I'm a big fan of Romance of the Three Kingdom XIII anf the entire ROTK lore. This game is currently on sale on Steam so I'm here for the review. Thanks!
Wow, I just discovered your channel while looking for more information about the game. What a trove of information about Feudal Japan! I've subscribed and am looking forward to diving into your historical videos. If you've organized them and presented them as well as this video, I'm in for a treat!
Shogun 2 for the battles and graphics, also the two other campaigns. Nobunagas Ambition for everything else. Loved playing Iron Triangle on the PS2 and also SoI on the PC.
Sphere of Influence was the last truly great Nobunaga's Ambition. It followed after the excellent Iron Triangle and the Japan-only Tendou(which IMO is the best NA game largely due to how building your own roads and claiming towns//building castles expanded your territory in a more personalized way and the formation system and skills system made officer choices for deployment a very important consideration due to their affinities to each other. Not to mention that game had the Great Takeda Rebalance that culled how ridiculously OP Takeda officers and their provinces had been in Rise to Power and Iron Triangle while buffing up the Hojo, which finally put the two clans at near-parity rather than the Takeda always having vast superiority over all of their neighbors.) Ascension was a neat idea but the execution made it feel like an inferior SoI with busywork tasks taking up time. Though I give it points for how detailed the Osaka Campaign was portrayed. Taishi on the other hand is the first time I've been truly disappointed by a NA game; the attempt to make it mobile-phone friendly really hurt many aspects of the game, especially battles.
>Though I give it points for how detailed the Osaka Campaign was portrayed. Masamune ditching the Tokugawa and killing Ieyasu together with Yukimura is a glorious thing too.
Doing a kind of history of the evolution of the game vid series would be super interesting. Also rating each one comparatively so that you could determine the top five or top three iterations in the series might also be fun to do. For example, my favorite in Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series is RTK II (I think there's like 18 or something now).
SOI and Rise to Power will always be my top 2. After just finishing up Samurai warriors 5, gotta go back to SOI and do an Oda playthrough again lol. Absolutely loved revisiting this review!
Hello! May I request you to make a review of an earlier version of this series for the PS2 called Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle? Although the emphasis of Sphere of Influence on historical accuracy is soooo good, I much prefer the simpler battle and management mechanics of Iron Triangle. I would like to hear your views on it as this video and your separate reviews of each of these games have given great insight to them. Good day! :)
He will do Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi next I think n then probably Ghost of Tsushima. However Rise to Power was my favorite so would gladly see a review of it on this channel at some point. I haven't played SoI or Taishi yet.
@@khal7702 My brother never took a liking to Iron Triangle and much preferred Rise to Power due to the arguably more in depth tactical battles, however I found myself at a great disadvantage because I couldn't maneuver my armies well in Rise to Power. How does Taishi compare to Sphere of Influence or Rise to Power?
Love this game and this review. Speaking of this made me want to take a look at one of my old playthroughs of a custom clan I made and started at 1560(Okehazama) where I am a relative of the Oda, Tokugawa, Suzuki, Azai clans and have the Hatakeyama as a Vassel.
Hello The Shogunate, I purchase Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence and almost all of the DLCs, thanks to your review I playing with the Otomo clan, manage to secure Kyushu and seize half of the Möri clan's lands, it was a dificult task at the beginning but, I get used to it to the game and is awesome.
Just repeating what everyone says, but honestly I though this was a way bigger channel when I saw the video quality and editing, and yet you have so little views. You tube definitely is screwed up.
Just finished the game. Absolutely loved it. Some accomplishments include wiping out the Akechi (gotta avenge my idol Nobunaga) and Chosokabe clans. The Taira clan became shogun. What made me end the war was respect for the Shimazu. Despite forming an anti-Shimazu alliance with the Takeda, Tokugawa and Hojo, they held their ground and actually gave me a tough time. So I decided to not bully their clan any further and end it.
Always make my custom character marry into the daimyo family. Always start with 100 stats across the board. You can always get things going. If you're going to start off with a smaller castle you have to be a vassel and have someone bribe the imperial court. Having that imperial court connection can save your ass when a larger force wants to take you out. Only buys 6months though. So you got to attack a stronger opponent during when they are attacking another equally stronger opponent. You have to play dirty if you're going to win as a smaller clan. The one from hirado is the hardest to play. Also I wait until a alliance is just about Over and move my troops in their territory and they don't turn hostile until the alliance is over I storm a Castle and take as many as I can. Use pincer tactics. Block key points use forts. Then call the imperial court when things get dicey.
I think you have low number of subscribers because of UA-cam algorithm but also people like me searched for channel like yours 5 years ago or more, n we couldn't find anything n gave up searching. U have everything on your channel I want strategy, history n movies about Japan.
After all these years playing this game, and reading Kingdom Manga, I think this is the PERFECT foundation for a Kingdom manga based game. Even Total War: Three Kingdoms is not so fit to represent the various personalities of the manga. If only... please Koei!
My copy arrives tomorrow, 05/22/21. I took your opinion to heart and opted for this over taishi. I have no doubt I'll be enriched and look forward to playing it on PlayStation plus. If you're on there let me know and thanks again shogun
Theres one time where I decided to create the most OP character I could think of and 3 others put all of them in different clans and put on ageless and maiden officers to see how big of impact 4 imortal demi-gods and their families would have on the world ( It was huge). I was steamrolling the game and because I was ageless I got a shit ton of daughters(like 7-8 daughters and funny enough 2 sons) so i decided that I should give them the same treatment that my sons got and employed them close to the frontline of our ongoing war and because the war was more intense on the north I decided to emply them on the south but I didnt think that in the moment I employed them the enemy would start a big offensive on the south still I tought that With was something that could easily defeated which I was right except that I didnt some armys would be surrounded be the enemy and defeated neither that in one of these army was one of my daughters or that in she would be captured. So they got repelled but my daughter was in their hands and I got anxious as fuck so glued my eyes in the notifications and hoped that she would be released until I saw the notification saying that they executed my daughter when I saw that I entered rage mode and started to get serious about this war and as revenge I executed every officer from them unti I got all the anger down (It was after a good 7-8 capture reports ),until that moment I only executed those who didnt want to be my subordinate AND got abilities. Eventually I only executed those who wont join me which was more severe than before my daughter death but I consired a mercy that those who werent useful to me could still keep their necks. This was the first time that I got this much emotion from a game the regret anger and sadness were real... I think that it was beacuse she was the youngest of them all that I got that sad/angry.
Greatest Sengoku Jidai game of all time. Shotgun 2 is more about the battles while this game really makes you feel like a Daimyo. More historical and no Realm Divide BS here either meaning you really get to feel like Shogun as well.
I'm curious have you ever thought about doing a live stream of this game? you could actually have your chat room as your advisors in this case. And have your own faction to see if you can actually beat the game that way. I think it would be pretty fun.
I think the first game from this series I played was on the NES and I had no idea what I was doing as a kid. Later played a ton of Rot3K games and came back to try this game on PC a few years ago. Was wondering if I should try the newer ones or not.
Last time I played Nobunaga's Ambition was Iron Triangle, but I think Rise to Power was my favorite. Is this version better then the ones I mentioned? I want assassination missions n duels. ROTTK 8 was my favorite style, I could play with friends n be either a officer or a ruler.
So is the battle gameplay similliar to other koei game rotk13? I played rotk13 and tbh rotk 13 battle is way too arcadey and there's no strategy involved
please PLEASE anyone share with me export file with maxed custom officers created, it's really a hassle to create them one by one.Although, is there any way to go around cap on how many castles you can build? It's quite annoying that even having funds and building power you can't go over the limit. I would surely rate the game lower than Shogun 2, most aspects looks shallow even if there are more of them. Sphere of influence goes by quantity over quality, providing many features that gets boring really fast. And don't even let me start on the annoyance of keeping an officer per castle when you start as custom nation and you folder with custom officers has very few of them created.
Grinding a superior army to dust by simply killing their key officers. Problem is you lose good personnel which later you'll need really bad. The 2nd hardest clan is any clan that starts off in the middle of Japan. You're hit from all sides you'll have to spend a good portion of your income in sheer diplomacy.
I'd honestly not qualify Nobunaga's ambition/Rotk games as full on strategy games. Feel like they are closer to Crusader Kings, at the least the entries were you control a single character through it all. More along the lines of 'historical sim' than strategy; Specially with how much some of the entries put focus on relationships and such.
It's strategy, but it's not necessarily war strategy. Afterall, Sim City, Zoo Tycoon, and the like are considered strategy games. They just involve a different kind of strategy.
I don't know how you guys even made it past the tutorial. I've tried twice already to play this game but couldn't do it on my PS4. The controls were too complicated and too much detailed management. I played another similar game made 34 years ago and enjoyed it a lot better.
They basically turned this game into carbon a copy of rotk 13, but in japan. Thats why i prefer earlier versions of nobunaga, they are more unique. Iron Triangle may be the best in the series. Thanks for the review though, it has convinced me to not buy the game.

Marriage alliances are perma? In Nobunaga's Ambition? That's funny to me, and to the Azai Clan.
I started this series with thd PS2 Nobunagas ruse to power. I tried it because I do enjoy Kessen. Loved it ever since.
Fantastic review! Thank you.
Nobunagas ambition SOI is hands down a Sengoku Jidai lovers dream.
Reminder, there's a Anime where the MC once played this game, and was transported into Sengoku Jidai, but everyone is a Girl.
Yes, Oda Nobuna no Yabou (Oda Nobuna's Ambition).
Judge me if you want, but that anime is a favorite of mine.
The Takeda exterminated by the Hojo? Preposterous! :D
Absolutely love this game have made my own Clan, unified the land from west to east and east to west so so so good 😊
Took quite a long time to get to the actual review of the quality of the game. Lot's of history and extraneous information.
Please do a SOI: Ascension review, this was phenomenal!!
+1
Yeah my favorite
Fun fact: Japanese figure skater Nobunari Oda skates to the soundstracks from Nobunga's Ambition. He's also directly related to Nobunaga as well.
great review
Going to buy it NOW after this review!
It's on sale on ps4 for the golden week sale. Looks like I will get it.
Greatest Sengoku Jidai game of all time. Shotgun 2 is more about the battles while this game really makes you feel like a Daimyo. More historical and no Realm Divide BS here either meaning you really get to feel like Shogun as well.
Try "rise to power" on the ps2 where u actualy attack castles crops houses etc and directly command ur officers.
great review now if only there was a good youtube channel that could help new players learn the game that would be great
super cool! can you do a video about famous samurai armor?
I'm curious have you ever thought about doing a live stream of this game? you could actually have your chat room as your advisors in this case. And have your own faction to see if you can actually beat the game that way. I think it would be pretty fun.
I like the game, but I don't like the price that did not change after 9 Years.
I think the first game from this series I played was on the NES and I had no idea what I was doing as a kid. Later played a ton of Rot3K games and came back to try this game on PC a few years ago. Was wondering if I should try the newer ones or not.
My only issue with this game is the fact that it costs £50 on steam, despite its age. Some new games on the platform dont even cost that
Its almost like a Paradox game (but with a smoother learning curve).
Is there any way to flip the damn names back to it's original form? It's so hard to search for characters
I never played it but since i'm a big fan of romance of the three kingdoms i should give it a try
I didn't hear the part on no multiplayer. Are any of the nobunaga's multiplayer? Have you played romance of the 3 kingdoms?
Agree 100% with your review and recommendation. Well done.
Last time I played Nobunaga's Ambition was Iron Triangle, but I think Rise to Power was my favorite. Is this version better then the ones I mentioned? I want assassination missions n duels. ROTTK 8 was my favorite style, I could play with friends n be either a officer or a ruler.
Should I start with game one or go straight to the new releases?
Taishi is apparently a step down in the series and dumbed down alot of it.
Ascension is basically an upgraded version of sphere of influence.
The only thing I hate about koei is their tendency to cut content to sell it as dlc
So is the battle gameplay similliar to other koei game rotk13? I played rotk13 and tbh rotk 13 battle is way too arcadey and there's no strategy involved
You funny as fuck to take out my Oji-sama, Shingen!!!😂😂😂😂 ASAP
The best part was costum clan and conquering japan with it
please PLEASE anyone share with me export file with maxed custom officers created, it's really a hassle to create them one by one.Although, is there any way to go around cap on how many castles you can build? It's quite annoying that even having funds and building power you can't go over the limit.
I would surely rate the game lower than Shogun 2, most aspects looks shallow even if there are more of them. Sphere of influence goes by quantity over quality, providing many features that gets boring really fast. And don't even let me start on the annoyance of keeping an officer per castle when you start as custom nation and you folder with custom officers has very few of them created.
Nioh 1 and 2 are decent if a bit more out there considering the yokai enemies xD
I just really wish Koi didn't put the names the wrong way around in their western releases.
It's so jaring
Nice! 🍻
What do you think about the Ascension version?
I have yet to seriously sit down and invest myself with Ascension to be honest
It’s very easy to take a castle just burn it for months and watch the happiness of the castle go down to 0
Grinding a superior army to dust by simply killing their key officers. Problem is you lose good personnel which later you'll need really bad. The 2nd hardest clan is any clan that starts off in the middle of Japan. You're hit from all sides you'll have to spend a good portion of your income in sheer diplomacy.
Does the game play well on consoles?
Review Sword of The Samurai 1989 next
Will there be a Boshin war version of this? Or a mod.
Kessen 3 review soon ?
Nice video, can review taishi?
How to depict a good Sengoku game?
You can play as Ikko Ikki there
Pokémon Conquest anyone?!
All good but just one single point. The enemy’s AI so stupid even without challenges.
You should review Sengoku Dance
still waiting for the review where you will be satisfied with music
I'd honestly not qualify Nobunaga's ambition/Rotk games as full on strategy games.
Feel like they are closer to Crusader Kings, at the least the entries were you control a single character through it all.
More along the lines of 'historical sim' than strategy; Specially with how much some of the entries put focus on relationships and such.
It's strategy, but it's not necessarily war strategy. Afterall, Sim City, Zoo Tycoon, and the like are considered strategy games. They just involve a different kind of strategy.
iron triangle is still the best
Interesting
Can you review kessen 3 please
Better than Taishi!
🙏
I don't know how you guys even made it past the tutorial. I've tried twice already to play this game but couldn't do it on my PS4. The controls were too complicated and too much detailed management. I played another similar game made 34 years ago and enjoyed it a lot better.
It's much easier to play on PC
make a video about Kessen
Is this game or games better than the kessen games
They're pretty different so hard to tell. I like this game's battle a lot more though.
@@Hell_O7 thanks
Subscribed. Excellent review.
They basically turned this game into carbon a copy of rotk 13, but in japan. Thats why i prefer earlier versions of nobunaga, they are more unique. Iron Triangle may be the best in the series. Thanks for the review though, it has convinced me to not buy the game.
I wasn't impressed with the castle building or the combat 🙁
