I use the Insta360 R as a dash cam on my bike, I found mounting it to my helmet too bulky and heavy. Mounting it off my handlebar slightly forward is a great place, and something not mentioned if your involved in any accident or incident you always have it recorded from what ever direction it happens. Great video as always 👍

This might just be the best Insta 360° One-R review I've seen! Congrats on this one. I am no biker, but I can relate to almost every single point you made. The only thing that bothers me as a filmmaker is the minimum focus distance of the 1-inch sensor and the lack of options to put an ND filter on it to get more cinematic footage. Apparently, this has now changed with the firmware update since Freewell now offers ND filters for the two non 360° lenses... Unfortunately, I won't be able to get it just yet over here in the EU, which sucks big time! I've been one of the first in the EU to order one, and still haven't been able to use it to its full potential due to missing hardware upgrades and gimmicks.

Yea, but scenery is not good when in rain. Dew on the lens sometimes ruins a clear picture.
I have the GoPro HD2 from way back. Bought into GoPro big time back then with a lot of accessories. I’m considering buying a new camera and the Insta360 One R is definitely on my top list along with GoPro 9 to choose from. I checked out the price for the Insta360 and it’s put me off a bit. To be fair insta 360 have really changed the game. GoPro have had it easy for far too long. hopefully this means that the next go pro will be even better with interchangeable mods like the insta 360.
The extra sized battery is what I've been waiting for a long time. Some people have suggested I run a cable around my helmet to a portable battery but why would I want to add a cable around my head? That battery is what makes the difference, wish hadn't bought the GoPro recently and waited for the insta360...

Did you find the boost battery had a strong enough connection when riding your bike? I have seen other report that the boosted battery stops it being an action cam :( I also want it to use when riding my Harley but concerned it might come apart :(

Been playing with my One R for a while and just wanted to add a couple of things.
First - Be careful which memory cards you use. It prefers SanDisk Extreme Pros. Had it shut off because it didn't like the Samsung or Lexar cards (rated as good or better than the SanDisk) and shut down saying they were too slow.
Second - It's not great for long shooting. Why? Because when it reaches its maximum file size it will stop recording, save the file, then start recording. This takes about 30 seconds to complete so you miss everything for that 30 seconds.
This will happen every 30min 1sec in 360, and 90min 1sec with the 1" lens (didn't test the 4K as I have a Hero 8 which I prefer for that)

Short of a Sony R100 maybe that large lens is clutch. Plus you get less of that wide angle silliness. The 1” sensor can still be utilized when shooting 360 footage right ? I was looking at their website a while back and something didn’t quite make sense. I noticed their was some drawback or limitation as a result of using the 1” lens ....like maybe the 4K module didn’t work with it or only the 4K did not the 5.3k....something like that but I’m assuming you have no idea what I’m ranting about so I will try to check their page but if you do know and see this before i update it let me know if you saw any such compromises, i may have misconstrued something

can the One R be mounted "upside down" and it flips the recording automatically, like in the go pro session?
From a motorcyclist pondering whether or not to buy this for use as action cam/360 cam; will this be able to film while connected to charge cable, or will I have to stop and change batteries every x mins?

So I have a very serious question that I need a answer and that is which should I get for just daily rides like a cars dash cam cause I don't like riding without having something recording everything in front so people don't try anything. I do agree with you on this. The battery is still perhaps useful until it blocks your POV while riding but the Leica lens is pretty useless. Also I got a question for you since you did a great job on the review of this camera. Does changing the mods pretty frequently has a chance of loosening the grip on the parts holding each other together? I mean, say 3 years down the line will it still have the same tightness holding to the 3 piece mod cam?

how about low shutter speed with 1 inch camera with stabilization turn on ? It is work or it is same garbage as gopro hero 8 ? Asking because we want natural motion blur with ND filter on, but we need stabilization on motorcycle videos :)

Audio is... ok but to add an external mic there's an adapter for about £10.
As for the lens, there's no protector but the big bit of glass is replaceable... although I've yet to see replacements available
The Leica lens seems great *instead* of the 4K mod, not necessarily on top of the 4K mod

U forgot to mention the focussing distance between the 2 lenses. 4k mod is better for close range then the 1 inch mod

the Leica lens still has back focus. super great for wide shots and infinity like star lapse, but not really focused on closeups.

The One R appears too large for the common helmet chin mount position, as does the new GoPro Hero 9. I’m mostly looking at it for 360 video while mounted to the bike.
Have you used the One R for a long time when mounted to the bike? I have problems with the One X when mounted to my S1000RR triple-clamp. The One X succumbs from vibration and crashes, causing the current video to become unusably corrupted. The problem starts after a few weeks and increasingly gets worse. It happens even when the camera is powered via USB, albeit less frequently than battery only. I have returned my One X for the second time - both with the same problem. The problem appears endemic to t
