The insulation is mainly for your villagers once you have them, they will burn firewood to keep warm. With insulation, they will use it at a slower rate, not so important with a small village. The storage will work as a central storage for the village. Residents will pull whatever they need as long as it is available, firewood, resources for production, etc. They will also store any produced goods there up to it's limit, then start storing at the workstation chest.

Also multiple storage buildings will link inventories and weight limit will be cumulative. I built a 2nd storage at the mine for convenience. Also put a house and workers there. When you assign workers to the mine they will commute from their assigned house to their workplace. They will even pull what they need if a storage is not close to them...like food storage.
