    "we dont need to see edits every half second, you need to teach is something" . . . "you're editing for your audience, not for yourself". This is the BEST posting you've ever done. Basic lessons video editors need to revisit. Stop that "trendy" stuff you're doing.

      The trendy stuff is so distracting! I feel like that type of editing is designed to keep new generations that don't have an attention span of more than 3 seconds engaged lol

    Sound design is so important! Even though I hardly ever use it in my motorcycle reviews. But I am always using it in my client videos.

      @@lilafromyoutube Good question. I do not think it warrants them since it is just the bike showcasing and a VO. Not much happening to call for sound design. If I were to have outdoor shots, with a lot of moving parts, I would.

    As is usual for you, thank you for delivering such quality content in a relatable format. Content creators get so hung up on gaming the algorithm that they forget their audience. I think this video does a great job of exploring that topic. I also create videos for the educational market (K-12) and as much as I like the IDEA of using more trendy editing techniques, I have to remember that my audience is trying to focus on a story. Story (with good audio) trumps all.

    Everyone in a production has the same target and they apply their particular job toward that target. The job is to take the written word ( script ) and guide the viewer to tell the story. Viewers need to be guided in where and when to look at the screen without any pre-determination. This starts on set - in camera through set design, lighting, make up , cinematography, audio etc. the footage is then sent to the editor that cuts the story into further guiding the viewer to tell the story. A colorist will then use color and luminosity values to enhance the story and finally color grade to fill in information that will serve as - time of day, geographical and POV to the story. While the audio is a huge part of it, most of the original script is in the editing. They guide the eyeballs ( eye trace ) and the rest of us, make sure they see the right things while looking at where we guide them to look.
    But as I said in the first sentence - everybody's job in all aspects of production is to tell the story.

    LOVE your channel and all your advice. So, my big question is: do you recommend background music for talking head videos in 2024? Seems like many channels don't use music any longer and I don't know if it's because it takes too long to do correctly or if this is what the audience wants. I read a bunch of forum and social media posts, and some people say any background music in talking head videos is annoying and outdated, and others like it. Most videos on UA-cam about adding music to talking head videos are from 3-4 years ago. Would love to hear your opinion!

    • @lilafromyoutube
      @lilafromyoutube  9 місяців тому +1

      Hmmm I use background music because I think it adds to the vibe. I think it’s about using the right background music. When you watch my videos, do you prefer no music? Just curious as it may answer your question!

    • @katerinawilliamson8546
      @katerinawilliamson8546 9 місяців тому

      @lilafromyoutube , excellent point! The music in your videos is perfect and that's probably the part that people refer to when they say background music is annoying. You can barely hear it if you are playing on a computer (which is how I watch UA-cam), but it's louder with a headset. So now I need to learn how to edit in GOOD music for my talking head vides 😀

    • @lilafromyoutube
      @lilafromyoutube  9 місяців тому +1

      @katerinawilliamson8546 haha I’m happy it cleared things up for you! It’s all a personal choice. I personally like adding music, but it’s all about the right music like you said. P.S. I use track club! There should be a link for 2 free months in the description.

  • @mkphotofilm
    @mkphotofilm 9 місяців тому +3

    Definitely some good advice here. But the most distracting thing I find is cuts when someone is talking. You do a few of these @Lila (but not too many!) and are hidden with l-cuts and zoom cuts.
    However, there are quite a few other UA-camrs that seemingly cannot go 5 words without a cut. 😂

    • @lilafromyoutube
      @lilafromyoutube  9 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I get that. I do it when there's a (subjectively) long breath or slightly long pause in the recording, because it doesn't make the video flow as well and people will get bored. You might actually not want to watch that either haha. I have become more chill with those cuts though. As you've probably noticed I don't cut out every breath. I did that for a while but I think it's ok not to haha. It's a delicate balance!

    • @mkphotofilm
      @mkphotofilm 9 місяців тому

      You definitely do it well. I'm terrible with saying stuff like "um", or pausing, or mucking up the words! In the cases of "ums" and"errs", I fix the audio and usually cut to another visual. I'm a big fan of seamless long cuts, or moving scenes like in famous films; in that moment you forget that it's a video or film; it just flows so well! Do you ever use a prompter or anything? maybe I need one 😅@@lilafromyoutube

I just recently started making videos on UA-cam since the end of February. Would love to get your professional opinion of how you think my videos look and what improvements I could make. Beautiful class as always! According to Robert Mckee, mentor to Oscar winners, a film needs to be "A good story, well told." In this video I thought it was fantastic when you explained how we can improve the "well told" part. If you allow me, I suggest a topic for a possible next video where you could teach us about the "good story" part. Mckee has great tips on this. Thank you very much for the brilliant tips and congratulations on the work. [ Nice hair :o) ]

      How to layer the work what to do first. Where to start and how to do stuff to be able to backtrack and change something without needing to redo 100 things.

    Hahaha, so true, cutting things out, it’s almost magic how things can improve. In my latest video the third draft was like 17 minutes long and it felt *perfect*, was about to push upload, watched it again, gave it a «hmmmm», left it, slept on it, watched it back the next day … sliced all B-Roll segments down to like half the time, sliced and trimmed and cut the speaking parts, piled some of the b-roll on top of the talking head segments …
    *boom* - down to 8 minutes … from 17 - so, good enough, can’t justify spending *another* day editing even more, pushed publish - prooooooobably could have cut the ending down by 30 seconds or so, or rerecorded a more snappy ending but f**k it, lessons learned and on to the next video :)

    • @lilafromyoutube
      @lilafromyoutube  9 місяців тому +1

      Haha this is exactly my point! Wild how you were able to cut 9 minutes out!

    • @AndreSjoberg
      @AndreSjoberg 9 місяців тому

      @@lilafromyoutube Oh there where *loads* of fluffy timelaps-segments that went on waaaaaaay too long between the speaking parts, totally uneccessary to convey the progress in a timely manner, but went completely blind on that while editing the third draft - so more focus on getting to the point in the next video, gonna try a different approach to my raw materials in the next one, not adding it *all* in and then cut it down, but instead define 8 or 4 bars of music, and then just add enough to fill that time, focusing on just adding key segments to drive the story forward and the passage of time, and see how that turns out :) Learning by doing it wrong and then trying again :)
