No, not quite. His brother Wilhelm died on November 1, 1998, his wife Anna 4 days later on November 5. His brother died of blood cancer and his wife of breast cancer. Cancer is a huge asshole

His wife died due to breast cancer. She was a theater actor, this is what the lines "We danced the movie... Midsummernight's dream" refer to. I must not think about how much it must hurt to lose a beloved person. But the song shows that pain and grief can be the creators of beauty. Thanks for your reaction

Shortly to the side how much that song got an impact emotionally to me and obviously to Herbert himself and how well I think it is performed:
I will thank you for your honest reaction to this song! That's what music is all about. It isn't important where you're from or what kind of genre in music you might prefer. To have the respect for any kind of messages delivered by music in all forms it can offer, whether you're into that genre or not, is what it's all about. Period.
I hope my english is good enough to get in touch with what I wanted to say. Greetings from Germany.

He’s a German legend man. I lost his brother to breast cancer and 5 days later he lost his wife to breast cancer, he put everything in this song. Everyone who says German is an aggressive and hard language should come back to this song an listen how much of love he put in this song

Herbert Grönemeyer's song "Der Weg" is a deeply emotional reflection on the loss of his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer. The song is filled with grief and longing, but it also shows how Grönemeyer processes his pain and finds solace in the memories of their time together.
The song opens with a haunting sense of despair: “I can’t see anymore, I no longer trust my eyes.” This is a powerful metaphor for the emotional shock and confusion that comes with losing someone close. Life seems to lose its clarity, and even reality feels questionable. Grönemeyer expresses the internal numbness and struggle to regain a sense of meaning. The line “Emotions have twisted” reinforces this idea: things that once felt clear and stable are now distorted and incomprehensible.
As the song progresses, Grönemeyer portrays the internal conflict that often accompanies grief. The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.”
A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared. The line “We were sworn, would have died for each other” is a testament to their profound bond. It conveys a sense of soul connection and complete trust - a love so deep that they would have done anything for one another. This statement highlights the intensity of their relationship, making the loss all the more painful.
The comparison of life to a “wild ride” is a poetic image that speaks to the unpredictability and speed of life. A wild ride is difficult to control, symbolizing how events spiral out of control and how fate seems unstoppable. In this context, Grönemeyer emphasizes that “nothing was too late,” meaning that they had no unfulfilled dreams together, but “much was too soon” - their time was abruptly and painfully cut short. This is the most heartbreaking part of the song: the acknowledgment that death came before their journey together could be completed.
Though the song is deeply rooted in grief and sorrow, it doesn’t end in complete hopelessness. Grönemeyer leaves space for the possibility that life can continue despite the loss: “because there’s always something left.” This line suggests that despite everything, there are still ways to carry on, and that even though the person is gone, their memory and the love shared can become a source of strength.
Overall, the song strikes a balance between profound grief and the realization that memories of the loved one remain alive, helping to continue life’s journey - though it will never be the same. Grönemeyer powerfully conveys that grief is a long, enduring process, but love and memories can serve as comforting anchors in the darkest of times.

"Herbert Grönemeyer’s grief over his first wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer, was profound and had a lasting impact on his music. Her death in 1998 from breast cancer left a huge void in his life and in the hearts of his fans.
How did Grönemeyer cope with his grief?
Music as an expression of grief: Grönemeyer processed his grief in many of his songs. Particularly well-known is:
"Der Weg" from the album "Mensch" (2002): A moving song that is directly addressed to Anna and describes her journey."
