    1. Non-starchy vegetables
    2. Fruit ...berries, apples, cranberries
    3. Plant protein ...legumes, lentils, tofu,
    4. Healthy fats ...avocado, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds
    5. Wholegrains

    Thank you Michelle! This is so very helpful! I’m hoping that in a future episode you can teach us how to figure out how much protein we are consuming in our food portions. I know how to calculate my protein allowance but then I get stuck. Don’t know if the foods I have on my plate excede the daily protein limit. Isn’t there a chart that lists the food, the amount of protein it contains for a certain portion? I haven’t been able to find such a much needed guide. 😊🌷

      Hello! You can look up specific foods or add to a food diary in an app/website like Cronometer (they have free account options). It still can be tedious. I created my CKD Diet E-Guide though for this very reason! So people can have a food chart that lists the amount of protein (and other kidney specific nutrients) and plan their meal/plate according to their individual needs!     I love Dr. McDougall’s nutritional starch based approach. Rice goes a long way and you can do so much with it.

      There are likely other alternatives you can find! Most important is using what fits your nutrient needs and also is accessible to you and also tastes good :)

    Michelle, can you comment on pickled beets & other fermented veggies, please?

      Fermented veggies are great to include in the diet! Foods can be pickled and not fermented. For example, kimchi and sauerkraut are fermented and contain probiotics. Whereas pickles or other pickled veggies don't contain the probiotics. Ultimately, you want to look for a lower sodium option of either and control the portion!

    What about green lentils, eggplant, pasta, tahini, sardines, salmon?

      Green lentils are a great legume too! Just a little higher in potassium. Eggplant is low-moderate potassium. Pasta depends on the kind of pasta. White/wheat versions generally are lower in potassium but have low amounts of fiber and higher carb. Legume pasta (like chickpea pasta) is high fiber, higher plant protein, and more moderate potassium. Tahini can definitely fit into a kidney friendly diet. Sardines and salmon are going to be more protein dense since they are animal sources (more absorbable phos and higher PRAL too), but can still fit if portion is adjusted for individual needs and paired with lots of veggies to offset the higher potential renal acid load!

    Is coconut oil ok to cook with?

      Coconut oil is ok to use here and there for a recipe. But for daily use oils I would recommend Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Avocado Oil.

    Hi, so I'm a self confessed carnivorous male, I tried "veganuary" back in January but just felt hungry, all the time.
    Can anyone please offer some advice or links to good plant based recipes.
    Can I eat meat with CKD3b and IGAn?
    Nutrition is so confusing when you carry a disease like CKD. Thank you in advance.

      I had stage 3 and thanks to God I am healed and also my diet. I still eat meat now and then and eat fish often. Chicken sometimes. I am careful with animal protein. I do have cream in my drinks three times a day mainly. I hardly have cheese now but have small amounts when I do have it.I eat lot's of vegetables and some fruits daily. I am low carb and do intermittent fasting daily.

    Are chocolates allowed on a kidney diet if diabetes is not present?

      Chocolate can definitely fit on a kidney diet. Dark chocolate (>75% cacao) is going to have lower sugar and higher fiber (but also a little more potassium) compared to milk and white chocolate (which don't contain any fiber and usually have more sugar added. 1/2 ounce is generally a good, smaller portion to stick to.

    Can you please answer one thing? My family has a genetic disease of the kidney. So my father is very frustrated about it. I am just 20. I regularly drink a warm glass of water with a tablespoon of honey and lemon on an empty stomach. But my father warned me not to drink honey he says it’s really bad for the kidney. But nowhere on the internet, I found something like that. Now my question to you is can I consume honey with water? Is there something wrong?

      There isn't anything specifically wrong with honey for kidney disease. But it is a source of added sugar. So consumption should be limited. I usually recommend limiting portion to 1 teaspoon which is 4 g added sugar. 1 Tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and therefore 12 g added sugar.

      @plantbasedkidneyskitchen I do have so many questions regarding kidney diseases. Is this common to have kidney diseases genetically? My creatinine is 2 and my dad is very panicked. Is creatinine related to having kidney stones? Or what foods should I not eat at all? So many doubts. I am sorry to bother you.

      I drink warm water with 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and 2 tbsp of lemon juice (freshly squeezed is best but bottle will do) first thing in morning on an empty stomach. It does wonders for me. I add a pinch of ginger and cinnamon to cut acv taste.

    I was looking for your date ball recipe with tahini and I couldn't find it. I wanted to let you know that I've been making them every week since I first watched your video. They're a big hit at our house, I've taken to add other ingredients on top of your original recipe. The main one is instant coffee, I add about 3 tbsps to the recipe. Thanks again for all the work you do making the videos.

      Hi! I don't have a date ball recipe... I have a peanut butter ball recipe (the nut butter can be swapped for tahini) and the maple syrup for date paste though!
