There are so many different designations for steel these days, I'd really like to see you do a chart and explain the pros & cons of each. Maybe rank them by cost, another by edge retention, another by corrosion resistances and maybe still another by brittleness or durability. And why don't we see knife manufactures using SAE, ASTM, or AISI codes that you would see if you were a welder going to a metal supplier for material?
the last part is bc if they used those codes most people wouldn’t know anything about it, and it would be easier to get them confused. regular people aren’t likely to know the difference between 1080 and 1084 steel, whereas 20cv and say k390 definitely denotes a major difference somewhere, plus there’s the trademarking of the steel names. a lot of chinese steels have a uniform naming convention, like 2cr13, 5cr15mov, 7cr17mov, 8cr13mov, 9cr18mov, 10cr15mov etc
My gent knife is a Kershaw launch 6, a Benchmade SOCP, and depending on the task a Cold Steel Espada XL which will handle every larger job. One handed operation is my preferred choice. The only mini is CRKT minimalist Persian neck knife i own. Big xl style are always my first choice. A full size Spiderco Military is only product I would consider from that brand but for over $200 I'd chose a Recon 1 for half the price
These presentations are always so enjoyable and entertaing to watch - not to mention educational, ( and threatening to the credit card !!! ). Thanks Dave, keep it up !
Truly some beautiful knives. Personally I carry a Case Cheetah, that my son bought me. I do like the smaller " gentleman's" knifes for every day carry. It works well for me. I do wish more makers made an ambidextrous knife. My son is left handed, and trying to get a good knife for him can be tough. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
DCA is the perfect host. He's so thurough about every detail. I wasn't surprised to learn he's a custom knife maker. I'm learning so much w/every video! Definitely been bitten by the EDC bug & getting knife knowledgeable so I can feel confident in any future investments in nice knives. Been hesitant to invest in a more exspensive because I wasn't able to maintain a knife properly. DCAs instructions on each knife means I can get a nice knife that won't require a lot of maintenance so long as it's not used beyond its means. Like it wouldn't be wise to use a CEO for bushcraft tasks. Before I subscribed to your channel I didn't realize the difference. I knew the difference between a steak, butcher & bushcraft knives but that was the extent of it.
Hello from Germany. The most beautiful knives come from our French neighbors, are definitely the knives from Laguiole. They make such beautiful knives that every steak is happy! But there are a few nice knives. My favorite knives behind Laguiole are the ones from Kershaw, especially the KAI 1460 Ken Onion
No fixed blades? I live in Kentucky horse country so what qualifies as gentlemanly here might be a bit more broad, but I keep a Bark River Little Fox River in figured walnut on one hip to balance out my Kimber K6S on the other. Gets a lot less negative attention than my Tops TSK and Springfield XDm! I also have a Case Russlock in red coral, mother of pearl and sterling silver that I've EDCed for YEARS (I'm sure collectors would freak out since it's one of Case's most coveted blades).
At my uncle's wedding, i carried the knife he gave me before he got married. It was a cold steel Luzon. The looks on my friends and family's faces when they saw a 13 yr old kid in formal attire with a giant knife in his pocket was soooo funny. I could argue you don't need a gentleman's knife
I pretty much either carry my civivi elementum button lock with the marbled carbon scales and damascus blade or my viper katla with the regular carbon fiber scales and copper backspacer/pivot collars and m390 blade as my gentleman's edc knifes.have to add the ArtisanCutlary centauri with the damascus blade to my collection being that I love how that looks with the carbon fiber scale and that it's a frame lock.have the KC exclusive centauri with the black/orange g10 scales and absolutely love it.its actually became my edc knife for last 2 weeks I've owned it.just works so well, action is smooth as butter and slices almost as good as a razor blade.find it to be a good fidget knife as well while relaxing.lol.really liking that zt as well though.think I may have to add that to wishlist.videos always make me spend more money.
You’re not the only one David, i’ve carried a Victorinox Swiss MiniChamp alongside a real knife since the MiniChamp was launched because it’s a fantastic mini multitool but the blades on it are tiny & made of a crappy kitchen knife steel. I have the Pakkawood Delica & I love it but I strongly recomend *against* the Kershaw Leek because that skinny steel handle is slick, especially when your hands are even slightly damp.
Just bought the KC exclusive with the black and orange g10 scales and blue titanium pocket clip and I love it.plan on getting the other exclusive that came out 3 weeks ago which was the smaller version that has the wood scales and gold backspacer/pocket clip and damascus blade soon as well.great knife for cutting open bags and cutting up boxes too.rips rite through cardboard not to mention the s35vn blade steel holds a great edge.
I realize this might not be that easy to do, but it would be cool if you had a front page area on the site to take you to a page with your most recent videos embedded along with links to pages with the knives featured in each video collected all on one page. I never even knew you were doing these weekly videos until I happened to click on one on a product page, so then UA-cam started recommending them to me, at which point I subscribed.
I was just debating between the Civivi Chronic and the Civivi Exarch. I went with the Exarch because it has all the same "gentlemanly" features as the Chronic, with the added coolness of being a front flipper. I'm pumped. Thanks for all the great videos!
Great video! I do own the Civivi Chronic Damascus blade, but I found it to be light & the carbon fiber laminate over the g10 handle ended up cheapening the overall appearance of that knife. I finally found what I was looking for in the Boker Plus Burnley Kwaiken mini flipper with the 3.15" D2 blade & solid twill contoured carbon fiber handles on the stainless frame. The blade is flush when closed & flipper action is a pleasant buttery smooth with a fantastic liner lock. I do, however, have to admit that the Chris Reeves Mnandi with the Beech handles is a nice looking knife as well.
My uncle is an avid fisherman. He had a recent hand surgery and cannot use his left dominant hand well. Any options for knives (gentleman's or smaller drop points) that are good for non-dominant hand? He needs to open and close with one non dominant hand. Thanks DCA! Dr. H
Can you do an update on the gents video and if you would do it would you include the cjrb ria? Just curious on what you you rank now. I love the CEO for my gents carry but im starting to love my recently purchased ria for that also. Maybe even more so cause its smaller and has a shape to it that makes it perfect for the gent knife in m opinion
To be honest, I wouldn't go with any of these, because they feel a little too modern knifey or brutish. As a cheap but well made, non threatening knife, always without a thought: Opinel with a walnut or one of those special handles. You can get those kind of small and incredibly light. I always have mine razor sharp with me. Always does the job and no one is giving me a strange look when I get it out. I think that is also partly because I can't snap it open and it seems a little more like a knife your grandpa might produce to cut an apple. Also it is so cheap that I don't think twice to take it anywhere. If you want to go for really classy and non threatening: Perceval L08. It is a little more on the bigger side for me, so it won't replace the Opinel. But that blade shape is just so classy and even though it isn't a very small knife, nobody would think twice if you got it out in public to cut off a lose thread from your wife's top or something. But of course that is just my taste and I have to admit it makes knife shopping rather hard.
I'm in the UK as well, I find the wide blades on the UKPK to be a bit much for a "Gentelman's knife". Personally, I have the UK variety of the CKRT CEO. No spring assist or thumb stud (a nail nic instead) and a slightly shorter blade to make it sub 3", but I'm really happy with it. Hides very nicely in a pair of dress trousers pockets, or even a shirt pocket. Especially handy in the UK. I basically use it as my "Dress Knife" for going out.
Pop always referred to these as "formal" or "dress" knives. The kind of thing you can whip out to cut off a loose thread in front of a senator and he won't freak out and might even ask to see it kinda deal. Knives can definitely be stylish!
Yea, you didn’t carry your everyday knife to church or functions. You needed a nice clean one. Sometimes you noticed some dirt under your fingernail you missed or you had to trim a broken fingernail. If you needed to pick your teeth with it make damn sure your mom or wife didn’t see you do it. Generally it was used lightly and kept clean. It might even get called on to cut a steak on Sunday after church. Steak knives were notoriously dull.
the CRKT CEO even nerfed for the UK market is a brilliant and good looking EDC with a long thin blade and almost pen or vape pen look and cheap too but really good looking p.s the lucky one and tuff lite are excellent backup options
The Victorinox Tinker, (small) is a good option aswell; a lot of useful functions for very little money, only £17:00+ here in the UK, from Heinnie Haynes! Nice presentation David, thank you once again. Love to you and yours. Stay safe, stay well people. 😷☺️🤗♥️👋😷
MKM Zieba Flame definitely my favorite here, but another less expensive option from Civivi not on your list is the McKenna. Especially the Damascus one.
Hye DCA....how are you?hope you doing good..can you make a videos about tradisional and modern slip joint that knifecenter have in stock..im looking for slip joint that have a pocket clip
Some good knives here, but I would argue that any Gentlemen's knife needs the additional discretion of a deep carry clip, and any clip knife must be light enough (2.5 oz or less) to be worn in in suit slacks or dress shirt pockets. The design needs to be sleek and elegant - not necessarily ergonomic and cutting edge like the ZT. This category should be filled with ultralight pen knives rather than 4 oz utility knives.
Great video and mix on my favorite style of knife. I appreciated the index marks and descriptions. That LionSteel Thrill is very cool and has me thinking about getting one even with it being a slip joint. The CRK Mnandi has been on my wishlist since I first saw it.
CRKT CEO is a perfect letter opener..... I prefer my Kershaw Eros, narrower blade profile and no speed safe. Benchmade, nice, but no clip is a deal breaker. I love Boker, I love my Ti handle Urban Trapper. Maximum blade for size. Spyderco Dragonfly is a classic blade design, double jimping/ choir allows for finesse in use. Mine is Yellow in H1 for Kayak use, but I love that wooden look. Chris Reeve.......want....want......want......one I don’t have! Got a Case too, but the Case Doctors knife with spatula I also have a Cold Steel Lucky One. So light, such a great blade. Not so lucky for me as after reprofiling and sharpening the blade, the tip cut my hand open, needing stitches...diy job Oh dear, I have a knife habit.
Good choices. Carry the Alox myself. But it is partnered with a Spyderco Sage 2, which I think is a very good Gentleman´s Knive as well. The Mnandi is on my watchlist.
What do you guys (and gals) think of the Boker Kwaiken series (especially the Frame Lock Flipper model and some carbon fiber models), and the Kizer Begleiter series as pertained to the "gentleman's knives" subject? I've already tried the CRKT CEO and CRKT Crossbones, and they're relatively decent for their prices, but I'd like to explore other options.
It means that the knife goes deep down into your pocket and nothing is visible except the clip. On knives that are not deep carry the clip sits lower so you can see a little part of the knife.
Knife Center The problem with using or carrying a really well made custom knife with an intimidating looking blade is they look scary. They may be beautifully made with quality materials and look elegant to you and me but, pretty much that is the only ones. If you carry a small Swiss Army knife; it might be better for some situations; but then you present yourself as being Mr. Gadget. I carry a little Rambler and it always perks people’s interest. They look at it and laugh at its small size. I believe the best choice is a small traditional folder with mirror finished blades that has one or two blades. It is classy and few people are going to think about calling 911. You just can’t beat a shiny little knife with exotic black Buffalo horn or some other cool handle material. German silver bolsters never go out of style. If you need to use it and others see it; more times than not someone wants to look at it and asks where you go it. You will be pleasantly surprise how many pretty girls like little pocket knives. They like them just like they like fine jewelry because that is what they are. The secret is; I carry all three, I just use the proper one for the proper task.
Excellent presentation! And a good variety you knives. I’m glad you brought out the CIVIVI Chronic. It will nicely complement my Elementum. I’d like to see a review of knives with a flipper open and button lock combination the ProTech Malibu. Or perhaps there are.no other similar knives to the Malibu?
That CRKT CEO is gorgeous.

Nothing says classy gentleman's knife more than a stencil-stamped logo on the blade. lol
@@XFS540 youre right, a definite downside
I know it wasn't released when this video was made, but I can't recommend enough that people interested in a gent knife look into the Ocaso Solstice

Big fan of that Cold Steel Lucky 1. Perfect 5th pocket knife.
Horrible branding thou. Basically a billboard

Absolutely love my Kershaw Leek. Keeps it's edge and great action on it.
Speed safe prevents a knife from having anything even slightly resembling "action".
Action is just the way the knife opens though.

My go to for when in business casual or formal is the CRKT CEO or preferably, Boker Kwaiken. Nice list though, thank you for sharing!

Why did they discontinue the Benchmade Tengu?
Brilliant! As I'm in the UK, I'm using the Spyderco ukpk daily and I love it!

Awesome video as always!
Great choices! Some other good choices for a gentleman’s knife are Spyderco Spyopera, Spyderco Sage 3 CF, Kizer Mini Shoal and Kizer T1.
The Lion Steel and Mnandi were the stars of the show. Gotta get one of each eventually. The kizer Feist is a great gent knife, too.
Think you guys missed a golden opportunity to pitch your KC exclusive Metamorph in G10. Love that knife for when I have to throw on dress pants.
any left hand knives?
the CRKT CEO even nerfed for the UK market
is a brilliant and good looking EDC with a long thin blade and almost pen or vape pen look

The Victorinox Tinker, (small) is a good option aswell; a lot of useful functions for very little money, only £17:00+ here in the UK, from Heinnie Haynes!
Nice presentation David, thank you once again. Love to you and yours.

that RJ Martin is pretty much the only ZT I look at. The Lionsteel Thrill is quite the little slipjoint...
I love Spyderco builds and quality but their blade shape and blade hole are very tactical looking and a bit startling to people who don’t know knives
What! No William Henry? A true gentleman’s knife!
Would like to have seen the CJRB Ria with carbon fiber in the list. Regardless, it is a great list.

Great summary. I agree with another commentator, perhaps you can post these videos on your Home page on your website.
Notable mention should totally be the Small Hyperion by Artisan Cutlery
What about knives for us noble savages? Also, I’m a lefty who’s tired of axis locks. My fidget factor returns diminished long ago.
I’m a lefty with a CEO. Flicking the stud with the left middle works smoothly after a few tries.

Like the list, wish lefty’s got more love though
I know what you mean. Fact is about 10% of the world’s population is left handed. So I understand why they do it.
I wish you would have shared the weight of each knife in your review. Weight is always of interest to me but especially with a "dress" knife.
Good choices. Carry the Alox myself. But it is partnered with a Spyderco Sage 2, which I think is a very good Gentleman´s Knive as well. The Mnandi is on my watchlist.

when people talk about a deep carry clip, what do they mean?
It means that the knife goes deep down into your pocket and nothing is visible except the clip. On knives that are not deep carry the clip sits lower so you can see a little part of the knife.
Try the Buck Langford.
A 75$ knife for 25$.
No disappointments.
great gentleman knifes.
Only con on the Boker is it’s in need of a steel upgrade even if it means a few more dollars imho.
The boker is the most beautiful
Did not expect Cold Steel to be the steal of the show ;)

The problem with using or carrying a really well made custom knife with an intimidating looking blade is they look scary.
Honorable mention to the Civivi’s Rustic Gent in Matrix Micarta and Damascus steel? $99!
