@@xXZaxoflameXx Consider, however, that longswords can also be wielded one-handed, especially for individual strikes. That can make quite a difference when your opponent expects two-handed range. One-handing two-handed swords is not unheard of, nor incredibly difficult, though it is largely restricted to medium-sized swords. Miyamoto Musashi teaching all of his students how to fight with a katana one-handed being a good example. This makes any complicated or strong maneuver difficult, of course, but when one hit can end an unarmored fight, just the option being there is significant.
Both swords depend on situation and personal skill A longsword does cover both 1-on-1 and group combat, but a rapier would be better for specific fighting style. Personal skills comes into play on what you know how to use better. Also has to do with combat style and how your body is built. If you're a big boy with mad reflexes. Take a buckler and punch your opponents weapon away while cutting em with your main weapon or punch em directly with a center spike. If you're a boy with a mean flick of your wrist you might be better at binding and controlling your opponents blade, longswords gives you excellent precision with both hands. It all comes down to preference and building to your strengths. Stick to the skills you find easier to master, your life might one day depend on it....Not nowadays but like, for people in the past.
As a HEMA practicioner I would say rapier is an overall better weapon it has more range and it can be more effective against groups paited with a knife. In a Battlefield situation it would deppend a lot but imo rappier has the advantage again as it can pierce more easely between the armor's gap. Nontheless when rapiers where common firearms where a thing and swords where not that useful on battlefields.

Though the blades are near similar in length, you have more reach since it is one handed. But I am definitely in agreeance with you, Sword and dagger wrecks faces.
The two handed longsword actually has more reach than the rapier, sorry to say. You can still use a longsword with one hand, just not as effectively; and if you hold it towards the back of the grip near the pommel you can get just slightly more reach out of the sword than you would if it had a shorter grip like the rapier. It’s risky since you lose a lot of control over the tip of the blade and can’t guard well, but there are techniques that do incorporate it.
@@S1rWakka Nonsense, it’s the same metal. You only get different infusion values if you’re making the weapon out of different materials. another thing about the rapier: it's much heavier than pop-culture would have you believe. However, the mass being centered closer to the heavy complex hilt makes it _feel_ lighter.
I've been lucky in handling or working with a number of original rapiers and one thing I would raise is that they vary hugely from very thrust oriented to extremely balance forward and choppy. Its an issue of modern rapiers being largely made for "safe" fighting in the sca, stage combat, or hema contests rather than being 1 to 1 analogues of originals, so they're made to be lighter and more flexible where most originals I've handled are very thick in the spine at the forte, stiff, strongly distal tapered and deliver a very powerful and damaging blow. Even in the sources for their use cuts are used frequently, not thrusts alone. Thrust oriented swords is more a feature of the later small sword, but again, a lot of modern fencers use lighter, safer rapiers as long smallswords because thats how they're made.
I mean if you already use a rapier might as well go the extra step and get a dagger/sword breaker (y'know the slightly longer dagger with small cut outs to catch swords)
I feel like it would be better to compare the longsword vs an older basket hilt weapon. There were tons of more sophisticated military one handed weapons with guards that were contemporaries of the long sword.
A rapier could be used to defeat multiple opponents about as well as a longsword. As someone who practices actual battlefield armored combat and fencing both are about as difficult to defeat multiple enemies if not actually easier with the rapier dagger or rapier buckler combo
It is said that the inventor of the rapier really hated the upper class, because before the rapier, in most duells one duellist died, but after the invention of the rapier, in each duell two duellists died.
This arguement also doesn't make a lot of historical sense. The rapier was invented after the musket was popularized in military use. The gun made a lot of armor obsolete, so the rapier took advantage of less armored opponents as well.
You missed the part where the rapier user is able to perform 100 thrusts in a second leaving behind after images of their rapier with a burning glow as the atmosphere is ignited by the speed of their thrusts
Great explanation, however you were incorrect on one point. The best thing to pair the rapier with is clearly a great sword (such as a Zweihander) as you can use it for heavy blows when the opportunity presents itself while the rapier remains in the off-hand to parry or put pressure on your foe. This worked great for me back in Oolacile Township, so I can guarantee it’s validity.
@@ordinarymodder905 Lol it's not that hard. It only has a STR req of 24, so any mid/late-game build can use it with ease, even if you split DEX/STR equally.
I wouldnt dream of contradicting David, but it has been my experience that a rapier vs longsword are pretty evenly matched, leaning towards rapier. A rapier point can get in and out faster and is generally more maneuverable, and in a 1v1 situation, the first strike usually wins. The longsword usually requires a parry against the rapier to land a cut, while the rapier can freely probe defenses. Even though their length is basically the same, the rapier being one handed means you have a longer effective reach, and more angles of attack.
This is what I was thinking as well. Best I can tell, the rapier was specifically designed and evolved to be successful in an unarmored duel, that's why it was a civilian weapon. If a longsword was better in that situation, people would have just used longswords.
I enjoy Fencing both, but when I was Fencing with one of the HEMA groups in Columbus, I was using primarily rapier and dagger. I walked away thinking I got my butt kicked. When I started talking to the Hema guys, they thought I had kicked their butt. We both had a lot of fun, and I think it boils down to the skill of the fighter. As far as the rapier being only one on one, anyone who’s been in an SCA rapier melee would disagree. I don’t think the rapier was optimized for that type of thing, but it could be effective.
Depends also on if you're wearing armor or not in the fight. Unarmored, I'd say rapier since you have many options to quickly thrust your opponent Armored, I'd say longsword since the rapier has trouble accurately hitting the tiny weakspots in plate armor while the longsword can either be guided in with halfswording or even used as a blunt weapon with murder strokes
A longsword can be used in one hand and paired with a dagger. I'm very new to training but I'm learning Italian Longsword and combining it with a dagger for occasional plays is very much a thing.
I think you also need to look at who it would be used by. As the longsword is a battlefield weapon, you would usually find it in the hands of a plated knight. Rapiers were mainly civilian weapons which were used in dueling.
@Jude Mahoney the examples you gave are both well out of the medieval period and into the age of muskets where sword to sword combat was far less common.
The longsword is a hand and a half, you're just small, also, you can use reverse grip, but only with dagger/dirk combined with a short sword or hand axe, there is actually a few manuscripts that actually show how it's done too.
To be more specific it's more like the other way around but yet again swords were not really used in the battlefield they're primarily as backup weapons actually really popular around the civilian Market
I honestly still think I’d prefer the rapier in a duel it has the range advantage witch I could use to take shots at my opponents hands, my goal with this would be a disarm which I could then use as an opening for a throat hit. Although on the other hand I could also pin the long sword against the chest, close the distance and strike to the throat or liver with my fist.
I suppose thats why when I hold a rapier in mock combat or even vr combat, my offhand weapon is the entire side that I am not holding a weapon. I can use my hand to push or punch, use my shoulder or my head to daze and usually follow it up with a rapier thrust on a now unguarded opponent
Designed for two different purposes. Probably very rarely if ever came in contact with each other. A rapier is more like a pistol that you carry on a day to day basis. A longsword is a rifle that you can’t really carry everywhere but you would much prefer to take that to war
Then that's no longer about the sword is it? The question is a good question though. Take 2 people that are clones, get them to the exact same skill level in the respective weapons, same equipment, ecc. Now have them fight in an open plain field where the only variable is the weapon used. Now, it's the featurse of the weapon that count, the reach, the techniques applicable, the stamina usage, the guard protection, ecc.
The long sword wasnt a battlefield weapon since it was primarily good at cutting and most people who used it were nobility and they would most likely be on horses so it's a weapon of the nobility and more of a status symbol than anything sort of like the katana
I'd say a Rapier with a slightly extended grip and heftier blade would trump both, just so you get similar dexterity with the option to go two-handed when needed. I don't know what a proper name for that would be, but I know they'd have to exist.

Very fair and logical explanation
Interesting video. Thank you for making it easy to listen to and understand
How many swords do you want?
Tf2 demoknight: *yes*
GIVE ME YOUR HAT
Longswords were used in one hand all the time - from horseback, on foot, with a shield.
The thing is, the rapier, while looking flimsy, turned into combat rapiers which were much better for,, combat, and later, Sabres for officers.
This man mastered the art of the blade
Who would win mostly comes down to who knows how to actually fight regardless of weapon, but I agree with your point.
You can also use that protection on rapier to bash or punch the enemy to earn cool points. And to subdue since it is a civilian weapon.
Explained very well, Thank you
This arguement also doesn't make a lot of historical sense. The rapier was invented after the musket was popularized in military use. The gun made a lot of armor obsolete, so the rapier took advantage of less armored opponents as well.

"Signature look of superiority"
I was going to make the same joke with a Glock
Also cloak can be used in the offhand. Better at concealing movements, smacking sword away. But only good one on one
You missed the part where the rapier user is able to perform 100 thrusts in a second leaving behind after images of their rapier with a burning glow as the atmosphere is ignited by the speed of their thrusts
You forget: rapier and gun.
I challenge you to 1 hand use a zweihandler lol
@@ordinarymodder905 Lol it's not that hard. It only has a STR req of 24, so any mid/late-game build can use it with ease, even if you split DEX/STR equally.
@@marquess2004 what
@@ordinarymodder905 you fool, this has been a Dark Souls joke all along.
An unskilled Pirate using a cutlass could cut to pieces an experienced swordsman using a rapier.
Rapier and of-hand longsword is my go to.
Rapier + buckler winner combo. Good offense, great protection, great portability as a civilian.
Id take the Rapier all the time for the hand protection.
Even better is the basket-hilted broadsword. Truly the best in hand protection.
If you use the Spanish style of fencing, the rapier is far superior
Depends also on if you're wearing armor or not in the fight.
Unarmored, I'd say rapier since you have many options to quickly thrust your opponent
Armored, I'd say longsword since the rapier has trouble accurately hitting the tiny weakspots in plate armor while the longsword can either be guided in with halfswording or even used as a blunt weapon with murder strokes
Makes sense to use Rapier and dagger in offhand so with ambidexterity, you will receive only -2 penalty to weapon in offhand
That's a surprising verdict
One thing I like about 1 handes weapons is you can use a shield simultaneously, not sure how well that works with a rapier, but the point is you can.
In some instances bucklers were used alongside rapiers
Expert advice from the shire.
Also a nerve factor and this is whoever using it as the experience and skill of using it said Weapon to happen against someone who doesn't
I would root for the long sword too because of who’s holding it. Probably a soldier who knows what he’s doing
Power move: use a rapier and a sword catcher dagger
A longsword can be used in one hand and paired with a dagger. I'm very new to training but I'm learning Italian Longsword and combining it with a dagger for occasional plays is very much a thing.
“Rapier and dagger”
Are shields not a thing we use anymore?
With the longsword, the sword is your shield - and rapier and dagger evolved from there
I think you also need to look at who it would be used by. As the longsword is a battlefield weapon, you would usually find it in the hands of a plated knight. Rapiers were mainly civilian weapons which were used in dueling.
@Jude Mahoney Do you have any historical sources of rapiers being utilised on the battlefield?
@Jude Mahoney the examples you gave are both well out of the medieval period and into the age of muskets where sword to sword combat was far less common.
This is such a cool channel
At this point it really comes down to the armor
Do a video on all your swords if you have the time. It would awesome. Also what's your favorite sword
Do you think you could cover the Zweihänder?
Look into montante sources. There are a few people on UA-cam here who have pretty good demonstrations.
“WHERE’S YOUR DEXTERITEEEEEEE!!!?????”
The longsword is a hand and a half, you're just small, also, you can use reverse grip, but only with dagger/dirk combined with a short sword or hand axe, there is actually a few manuscripts that actually show how it's done too.
So your saying it's quantity not quality. EXCELLENT
I'd say armor plays into it a lot. People are bags of meat, rapiers are giant needles, that's why they're not really seen in battle
Why don't they make longsword with larger hand guards? Like a flat disc instead of a bar.
Giant dads do not approve of the final decision, strength is supreme
To be more specific it's more like the other way around but yet again swords were not really used in the battlefield they're primarily as backup weapons actually really popular around the civilian Market
I guess you never heard of a bastard sword. The perfect balance between one-handed and two-handed. It is an amazing sword design
Longsword is def one of the best all rounders but one on one tons depends on like preference and what else you bring
One is semi armored and the other was civilian regular clothing. That's another thing to look at also.
The age old question "which weapon would win against each" the answer, which ever one has a better fighter.
In Dark souls 2 i always use a greatsword on the right hand and a rapier on the left hand, very eficient combo
Rapier is pretty much easy mode in ds2
The long sword wasnt a battlefield weapon since it was primarily good at cutting and most people who used it were nobility and they would most likely be on horses so it's a weapon of the nobility and more of a status symbol than anything sort of like the katana
The most surprising thing I learned from this video is that a rapier is more of a civilian weapon
That was a very enjoyable ride, thanks.
I'd say a Rapier with a slightly extended grip and heftier blade would trump both, just so you get similar dexterity with the option to go two-handed when needed.
I don't know what a proper name for that would be, but I know they'd have to exist.
I know rapier was gonna get dogged on, but I’ll always love it.
I feel validated for using a rapier dagger combo in literally anything i can especially the souls games lol
This is if both people know what they are doing
