these strength tests are bananas. its like something cold steel would do in their marketing. i could not believe how far those swords bent without snapping. was almost 90 degrees. both were very well made.
A blade that is hard will snap under pressure, combat isn't perfect and more often that not your blade is going in and out of something at a weird angle
The test is original from traditional toledan blacksmithing and swordmaking. It first consisted in flexing the blade 90 degrees both ways and then hit hard a helmet with it. All good swords had to pass it.
Rules for winning Forged in Fire: 1. Use spring steel stock. Don't do Damascus/pattern welded steel. 2. Make your weapon as light as reasonably possible. 3. Make sure your handle is rounded and comfortable. 4. Get the heat treatment right. 5. Put some kind of shock-absorbing material in the handle.
Handle needs to be ovoid in shape not round. You can't index something with a round handle it also turns in your hand when you make contact. An ovoid allows you to index perfectly and keep edge alignment even after you make contact.

I have been blessed to have been taught by some really talented bladesmiths and Was able to accomplish what I never thought I could. Amazing experience and invaluable life lessons learned!
Sergeant Rainstorm meant to protect against the rebounding metal bits should the blade experience a catastrophic failure. The shock alone could br3ak a bone in the arm holding the sword. Worse yet parts of the blade could spin around impaling the person holding it. That reason is also why they wouldn't the second blade through the strngth tests since it occured multiple fatigue points making it more likely to snap.
there's a science to it. When steel is properly heat treated there are only three possibilities. Perfect, moldable, and brittle. The most "dangerous" is brittle, but in reality these types of blades just crack like potato chips. They dont actually explode like a glass bottle. The most danger is just the judge slipping and falling after he loses his grip from a cracked blade
Is it difficult? Ive never tried metalworking but it seems pretty straightforward. Heat it at a certain temp for a certain amount of time depending on the steel you are using. Is it not as scientific as it seems?

Who else likes it when that one dude says “it will killlll”
for some reason when that dude said "10,000 dollar worthy no doubt" talking about his sword I immediately wanted the other guy to win lol
Can we buy these pieces somehow? If these guys remade their work and sold it that would be awesome
I knew the guy gonna win from the way he expected the blade to be flexible.
I can't watch this video without having an armour while sitting in front of computer.
Not with that wheel test
