This is amazing writing. It uses the clipped, clinical, hyper-objective descriptions of old JRPG battle systems to temper the ridiculously high emotional stakes. Since all the sentences describing what's happening are so short and leave so much for you to fill in, but are so specific and descriptive, it turns what could easily be eye-rolling melodrama into an instant tear-jerker. "Lucas isn't sure what to do anymore." "Lucas felt heartbroken." "Lucas remembered Claus' smell." All of these clinically straightforward descriptions of these hyper-emotional moments keep things in check, so that we can go allow ourselves to feel for these characters without getting lost in the melodrama. They also use the fact that it's a game to tell their story -- no one tells you that you can start attacking Claus after Flint gets hit, but if you try it, then you realize that. And it makes sense.
Completely agree. This exact fact makes it so much more emotional, because it isn't streamlined and delivered directly to your face (many melodramas stating things just to be emotional and dragging on forever), but it's realistic and somehow so much more personal than what would otherwise have been. i never felt such a way towards any final boss battle ever it's impossible to fully watch the battle without getting the most depressing and empty feeling on my life i just feel complete misery whenever i force myself to sit through it
How I think this battle would have gone down: 1-Robot: Lucas believes Claus is a mindless slave. This phase progresses like a normal boss fight where you must defeat Claus. 2- Grey Claus: Same. 3-Angel: Lucas believes Claus is dead. This phase progresses like the last one. Throughout these phases. the unused "One Two Three Five" song is played. After them, Hinawa calls out for the first time, causing for the next phases. These progress the same as the used fight in the final game, with the music going back to Battle Against the Masked Man. 4- Static "X" 5- Red outline of Claus- Lucas begins to fear Claus. 6- White eyed picture of Claus- Although Lucas realizes Claus is still alive, he feels defenseless against him as he cannot do anything. 7- White eyed sprite of Claus- Lucas feels as if Claus wants revenge for his death. 8- The dreaded Vapor2- Lucas feels utterly terrified. Fear is the only emotion he is feeling, as he truly feels as if Claus has become nothing but a demon out to kill him. From here, the cutscenes play. When it returns to the battle, It's Over is playing with the final phases of the battle beginning. 9- Naked Claus- I don't know what this is supposed to symbolize, but I would assume it would be used in this part. 10- Clothed Claus- Lucas realizes Claus is alive. 11- Lucas and Claus- Lucas realizes Claus is his brother, and the battle finishes just as it did in the final game.
Naked Claus could represent Claus in his most pure form, as in the Japanese culture, the naked form, reprensents the purity, an pure Heart of sincerity, and a bunch of other meanings, also you can notice he's in a child form, children, in most mitologies and cultures, represent the inocence and purity, and kindness...
I think that if you die, Hinawa will give some words of motivation or something and leaves you with 1 HP or acts like LifeUo y. I can't remember which one though. Or maybe neither if those happens.
Well, because it's more depressing than Earthbound. It's not only about a masochist alien, it's about a family's bond. Even without those backgrounds, you're already feel depressed to the past memories of "masked man", which is under both Claus and Porky/Pokey's control. Anyway, nude kid scene or sprites are also appears in Mother 2, but it got removed in Earthbound and changed with Ness with pajamas
As someone who's got a twin sister, I'm just gonna say: fuck Mufasa's death and Titanic, this is true tearjerking material. (For the record, I'm still shedding tears.)
I love how the static during the memories indicate his emotions throughout the scenes. I especially love that when Hinawa looked at the camera, it flickered between red, which established anger, and blue, which established regret/sadness. I’ve watched this scene a while ago and didn’t notice until today.
I don't actually think those backgrounds would have appeared in this order. Supposedly, these were the backgrounds that were made for, what was described by Itoi as, a nightmarish ending that would have used no dialogue. These images when put in a certain order could symbolise a terrifying entity slowly transforming into Claus. In fact, just for the sake of speculation, I think what was going to happen originally was that the spirit-like image you see turn from gold to silver would have been a spirit that leaves the Masked Man's body, and that would be the first form, and the longer the fight plays out, the more the image of Claus appears clearer. I would also speculate that the fight would have multiple phases, the first being the masked man, then after that phase it goes to the spirit enemy. I think the order would go from first to last: 1) The really crackly grey and red background, which would be the phase where you fight Masked Man. 2) The same background but with the outline of Claus's face, minus the colours 3) Perhaps the next phase would be when the golden spirit appears. 4) The silver spirit background would then appear (perhaps the red mark would appear on it's head after being beaten up) 5) The silver image of Claus naked with red eyes. Then a third phase would trigger and that would be where the unused "call" command would be used, to bring Claus back to his senses. I'd imagine the flashback cutscenes would play in-between these backgrounds, and are distorted because they are how they look from the Masked Man's perspective. 5) It would be the big red face of Claus 6) The full image of Claus with those dead eyes 7) The pixellated version of Claus with dead eyes 8) The image of Claus naked. 9) The image of Claus fully clothed 10) And finally Claus and Lucas together. With this order of backgrounds used, I imagine the ending would have played out like this: You kill the Masked Man in the first phase, then the evil spirit of Claus leaves the body, which you must fight. After it is weakened you must call to the spirit before it reaches heaven, or wherever Hinawa and everybody else would be once Lucas pulls the final needle, thus making the next life a happy one. I could be super wrong of course but that's just what I picked up on after observing the images in this order and looking at some of the other unused animations, as well as this game's theme of beauty through loss.
Gygas was supposed to appear in mother 3, and there are unused sprites of the masked man exploding and laying on the ground, dead. It was probably more along the lines of you defeat the masked man as you do here, but when you think it's over, "Gygas" appears and takes control of Lucas' soul. Then you fight the literal embodiment of Lucas' depression and sadness as Gygas makes it its plaything.
I remember when I named Lucas and Claus as me and my best friend. This friend, was my best friend 2 years ago, but he was forgetting me slowly. When I played this part of this game I felt very, very bad, because this symbolizes our non-existent friendship.... I wanna cry...
See this is the thing that a lot of people missed, when you name all the characters based off your family members... Well you already know what will happen during the final battle! Even though you know its not real, it really hits you hard. Especially since the final fight literally consumes you and makes you feel like your apart of the game... If anyones willing to part with the characters' real names like DudeCrafter here... Prepare for tears! ;-;

Glacio Official Itoi said that he was done with the series, as he made them during and for a particular time in his life that’s already passed, and it wouldn’t make sense for him to make another one. I’d still love for it to happen, though.
man, this is the greatest entry to the earthbound series yet. earthbound zero: just your typical jrpg with a typical "beat all the bad guys and save the world" storyline. I was never a big fan of this one. Earthbound: the funnest entry. this game is hilariously quirky in its own way, not a big fan of the story, and giygas. my God. EB 3: neat visuals for a 32 bit game, wonderful storyline, improved game mechanics, (I love how your health bar doesn't immediately drop when you die, so you still have time to heal) and the unused backgrounds just adds to the emotions of the final boss. (vapor 2 terrifies me, but with these unused backgrounds, I can actually tell if I'm doing anything, of making progress through the battle.)
I feel like Mother 1 is more than a simple RPG, in the Mother 1 guidelines it gives you more details about Ninten's family and so his grandfather George, but due to the budget limit Itoi failed to put them in the game.(Mr. Itoi said his script was first rejected by Nintendo.) If you happen to have Mother guideline booklet you will find it incredibly detailed: It even told you when George was born and how he was raised in an educated family. The booklet said that George then become a local newspaper journalist which the instinct of a journalist require him to discover the mysterious of the Aliens and ends up lost his wife Maria. Also, the original story is supposed to have more family connection rather than start by a sudden upheaval. I think the back story that given to Giygas is also really good and the type of endgame boss fight was considered a innovation and stereotype breaker of 90s RPG, which in Itoi's own words "is way too feminine". The purpose of Itoi is virtually to change the masculine sense of RPGs and even response to 90s social phenomenons. (eg. 90s Japanese youths against paternalism so mangas and games were generally want to avoid to give too many description of protagonist's family life so audience can project themselves on, and what Itoi did is just the opposite.)
I hope Claus will be reunited with his mother and ness from where he’s going I know it would be really hard to watch your own brother die on your own hands but I know the only reason he used that bolt of lighting was because he felt sorry for all the people and family that he betrayed and one day this family will be reunited and can be happy forever
Fun fact:If you revive any teamate Claus will fire an *intense bolt of lightning* seen at the end instantly k.o'ing them except for Lucas and reflects the bolt but doesn't kill clause meaning the mask was what kept him safe from dying from the lightning strike.
Reasons for Removal [This is just my point of view of why they were removed. I’ve feel like I’ve done enough research to know why the backgrounds and scenes were removed. So I hope my point of view is reasonable.] Backgrounds The backgrounds were removed due to the fact the the people working on the game thought it was too horrifying for the player to look at. But really? Just because of that! The backgrounds would’ve really represent the final battle to it’s full potential; showing what it was really mean’t to be! Scenes It’s unknown why they were removed, but could’ve been speculated to be really depressing. Note: I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty glad that you were able to find these unused features. This is something amazing that should’ve been used in the first place, and even though they weren’t used, I’m glad now that we can use them.
MrKeyblademaster1992 he uses lightning to kill them on the turn you resurrect them, but it reflects off the badge and hits himso that leaves me wondering has anyone ever tried filling lucas's inventory with lifenoodles and resurrecting someone on every turn so he uses lightning to kill them, just to see if he could kill himself with his own lightning before the whole event plays out? i might test that sometime (i wont i'm sure i'll forget i ever posted this)
Stu Pickles I remember using a lot of life noodles on them and he didn't die. I doubt he can. All I heard is if you hit him enough, Hinawa will start sobbing. That's one thing I've never seen happen.
I love how this makes use of the rolling health bar, in Mother 2 it was basically only useful in bosses later on like the Kraken, so here when it's necessary is pretty cool
i like to think that when the dragon wakes up, the world resets itself to be a world without the pigmask army, bringing back hinawa and claus, not necessarily starting the world completely over from scratch, but just from when the final needle was pulled.
The robot and the angel spritez i believe were originally meant to be final boss phases that were cut from the final game. I saw this info previously and, they do look like battle sprites.
I forgot about this, but seeing it again made me cry buckets. When claus gives his final breath and the scene before the removal of the needle, both of them hit in my feels
@@galvaniccorsair He turned him into a machine, so he became some Darth Vader and did lots of sh%t such as pushing the needles, for Porky then, in the battle's moment, he recovers his humanity and kills himself.
The music combined with the background feels so much more impactful. Not only in fear, everyone agrees in that, but in the deep sadness and loss. This figure before you was once your brother. And now all that remains of him is a mangled machine that's not supposed to be alive. This is all said before, but man, did it hit me just now.
Why wasn't this version used? The backgrounds were much cooler and felt like they would be more emotionally impactful on the player? Also the additional cut scenes mid-fight were scrapped for what reason?
Naked Claus. that's probably the only reason i can think of, considering this game is rated E compared to Earthbound's current T rating (it was now changed to T from KA, in case you wonder.)
Yeah, after seeing your brother, which you thought died, turned into a cyborg zombie, come to the realization that it's impossible to have free will or live without the cybernetics and succumb to suicide... I think I would hit the "end the world" button pretty fucking hard. I can't tell if the beta elements add or subtract from the battle, though I still think they were for something else entirely.
The game designers really did a fantastic job with making you feel on edge and uncomfortable with this battle. Like you were almost Lucas. This still holds the top spot for best writing and most sadness in my book.
I'm not sure if this is true, but I remember hearing somewhere that originally Kumatora was the 7th Magypsie and was supposed to disappear at the end of the game after Lucas pulls the final needle. I'm glad that got changed, this ending is sad enough as is.
Wow, this is great. I finished the game a few days ago and I'm looking into various unused things and these backgrounds do feel perfect with the final boss like this. But, I have to say, I prefer how it was in the final game because when you finally see Claus' face. It really lands that emotional punch. I think the cutscenes really would've helped the emotional aspect too.
@@robertlainsley824 he meant that Lucas and claus were in the same place and it looked like it was blue shorts but also a blue shirt so it looked like nesses clothes
Jeez, imagine seeing that, though. You're in a battle against, (spoilers if you haven't watch already??) your twin brother, and you just see deformed hallucinations in the background of your brother, and other things. I'd be terrified.
how the fuck have i not cried at this?! do i even have feels? well, i think i'm happy that i had to sacrifice my brother to save the world or something.
I know I'm really late to this and I doubt I'll get any response, but if anyone does see this, can we discuss the backgrounds with the robotic figures? I'm assuming they're supposed to be Claus, but the golden one really strikes me. That one doesn't even look like a robot, but more like an angel with the wings and what not. Maybe that's supposed to represent his soul and who he is on the inside after seeing his reconstructed exterior? But I'm not sure, that one sprite always disturbed me a little and left me puzzled as to what exactly is represents.
There are very few games that emotionally affect me like this one did. It's very rare a game makes me actually cry while playing it. The only ones I can think of is the original Mother, and Undertale. Maybe it's because they all have the theme of loving your family, and I don't care about anything more then my family. Also, the only thing that confuses me about this fight, is why did Claus kill himself? Like, I know he's a cyborg, but why does that matter if he remembers his family? I guess it's just one of those things where they can't face knowing all the pain they caused to the ones they love. But gosh dang it Claus, stop being emo. ;-;
Claus feelings took mortal damage after everything: Dying of Hinawa-- -50 Trying to kill Mecha Drago-- -100 Becaming a robot-- -45 Lucas-- -5 MORTAL DAMAGE Escapes into other world.
Try the "You're the Inspiration" stage of Elite Beat Agents. It's the one stage in the game that throws the silliness of the rest of the game *almost* completely out the window.
Earthbound: FATTY CAKES AND JETUS DEMONS WTF Mother 3: "clause fired an intense bolt of lightning" no "the franklin badge reflected it" NO "claus took mortal damage" MYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
3 way controller "Claus fired an intense bit of lightning" no... "the franklin badge reflected it" NO NO SON OF A BITCH NO "Claus took mortal damage!" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If there ever is an official localization, I really hope at least some of the unused background animations for this battle are re-added. We all know exactly who's presence, lingering somewhere, they are suppose to call back to with them and that seething red. I think it would have been a better way to tie all three titles together if they had been kept in.
Lucas had already knew that the Masked Man was Claus, but it would make sense if Flint had become unconscious before telling Lucas the Masked Man's true identity. If these backgrounds and cutscenes were to be added of course.

In some Japanese cultures or something the naked is like purity or something
Naked Claus could represent Claus in his most pure form, as in the Japanese culture, the naked form, reprensents the purity, an pure Heart of sincerity, and a bunch of other meanings, also you can notice he's in a child form, children, in most mitologies and cultures, represent the inocence and purity, and kindness...

Oh, that is way more impactful. They should have used these backgrounds. Nice work!
Fauntleroy The backgrounds were left unused because the creator found them too downright terrifying.
Yes true
they did the same thing for earthbound (terrifying backgrounds) so why can't they do it for Mother 3?
Well, because it's more depressing than Earthbound. It's not only about a masochist alien, it's about a family's bond. Even without those backgrounds, you're already feel depressed to the past memories of "masked man", which is under both Claus and Porky/Pokey's control.
Anyway, nude kid scene or sprites are also appears in Mother 2, but it got removed in Earthbound and changed with Ness with pajamas
fair enough
As someone who's got a twin sister, I'm just gonna say: fuck Mufasa's death and Titanic, this is true tearjerking material. (For the record, I'm still shedding tears.)
I appreciate those moments. Don't tarnish them. Have enough sentiment for everything.
Aflay Or maybe I can have my opinion?
+Amelia Holstein He didn't say you have to like them just respect them.
Tha Swami Did I say you had to like them?
Amelia Holstein Nope.
I think the order would go from first to last:
1) The really crackly grey and red background, which would be the phase where you fight Masked Man.
2) The same background but with the outline of Claus's face, minus the colours
3) Perhaps the next phase would be when the golden spirit appears.
4) The silver spirit background would then appear (perhaps the red mark would appear on it's head after being beaten up)
5) The silver image of Claus naked with red eyes.
Then a third phase would trigger and that would be where the unused "call" command would be used, to bring Claus back to his senses. I'd imagine the flashback cutscenes would play in-between these backgrounds, and are distorted because they are how they look from the Masked Man's perspective.
5) It would be the big red face of Claus
6) The full image of Claus with those dead eyes
7) The pixellated version of Claus with dead eyes
8) The image of Claus naked.
9) The image of Claus fully clothed
10) And finally Claus and Lucas together.
With this order of backgrounds used, I imagine the ending would have played out like this:
You kill the Masked Man in the first phase, then the evil spirit of Claus leaves the body, which you must fight.
Then you fight the literal embodiment of Lucas' depression and sadness as Gygas makes it its plaything.

yeah this is nowhere near 32 bit, guess the over 100 people who liked the comment are retarded
man, this is the greatest entry to the earthbound series yet.
earthbound zero: just your typical jrpg with a typical "beat all the bad guys and save the world" storyline.
"your health bar doesn't immediately drop when you die, so you still have time to heal"
that originated from earthbound, not mother 3

Fun fact:If you revive any teamate Claus will fire an *intense bolt of lightning* seen at the end instantly k.o'ing them except for Lucas and reflects the bolt but doesn't kill clause meaning the mask was what kept him safe from dying from the lightning strike.
amazing how his shirt still fits after 3 years
Reasons for Removal
[This is just my point of view of why they were removed. I’ve feel like I’ve done enough research to know why the backgrounds and scenes were removed. So I hope my point of view is reasonable.]
Backgrounds
The backgrounds were removed due to the fact the the people working on the game thought it was too horrifying for the player to look at. But really? Just because of that! The backgrounds would’ve really represent the final battle to it’s full potential; showing what it was really mean’t to be!
Scenes
It’s unknown why they were removed, but could’ve been speculated to be really depressing.
Note: I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty glad that you were able to find these unused features. This is something amazing that should’ve been used in the first place, and even though they weren’t used, I’m glad now that we can use them.
Another thing that I wonder: Is it possible to revive your fallen party members in the beginning of this fight?
Yes, but the Masked Man will use his Lighting attack to knock them out again.
Metkuratsu Mizuiro
Well that sucks
MrKeyblademaster1992 I gave them all Momentos...and the Momentos never activated...
MrKeyblademaster1992 he uses lightning to kill them on the turn you resurrect them, but it reflects off the badge and hits himso that leaves me wondering
has anyone ever tried filling lucas's inventory with lifenoodles and resurrecting someone on every turn so he uses lightning to kill them, just to see if he could kill himself with his own lightning before the whole event plays out?
i might test that sometime
(i wont i'm sure i'll forget i ever posted this)
Stu Pickles I remember using a lot of life noodles on them and he didn't die. I doubt he can. All I heard is if you hit him enough, Hinawa will start sobbing. That's one thing I've never seen happen.
Now this... this was sad. The pure emotion this part of the game displays... I almost cried. I literally almost broke down in tears.
Claus without pupils is somewhat terrifying
I love how this makes use of the rolling health bar, in Mother 2 it was basically only useful in bosses later on like the Kraken, so here when it's necessary is pretty cool
You know, I didn't even know the cutscenes existed.
I can see why these were cut, though. The battle was long enough without them.
Because maybe after the idea of killing porky was rejected Lucas was meant to accidentally kill Claus
I did this with the cut backgrounds and cutscenes but I used character modifier so all my party members were Claus XD

Mother 3's ending and Claus's death always brings a tear to my eye. When I first saw the ending, I broke down.
Dang they were really gonna show Claus' life flashing before his eyes
The ones that get me are "You must be so exhausted" and "You'll forgive your hasty brother, won't you?"
this traumatised me more than anything
i like to think that when the dragon wakes up, the world resets itself to be a world without the pigmask army, bringing back hinawa and claus, not necessarily starting the world completely over from scratch, but just from when the final needle was pulled.

The music combined with the background feels so much more impactful. Not only in fear, everyone agrees in that, but in the deep sadness and loss. This figure before you was once your brother. And now all that remains of him is a mangled machine that's not supposed to be alive.
This is all said before, but man, did it hit me just now.
I haven't even played this bit watching this through made me physically cry and I haven't cried in 3 years.
Why wasn't this version used? The backgrounds were much cooler and felt like they would be more emotionally impactful on the player? Also the additional cut scenes mid-fight were scrapped for what reason?
+Растко Probably for the same reason the possible Giygas fight was gone: for the kiddies.

I know I'm really late to this and I doubt I'll get any response, but if anyone does see this, can we discuss the backgrounds with the robotic figures? I'm assuming they're supposed to be Claus, but the golden one really strikes me. That one doesn't even look like a robot, but more like an angel with the wings and what not. Maybe that's supposed to represent his soul and who he is on the inside after seeing his reconstructed exterior? There are very few games that emotionally affect me like this one did. It's very rare a game makes me actually cry while playing it. The only ones I can think of is the original Mother, and Undertale. Maybe it's because they all have the theme of loving your family, and I don't care about anything more then my family. Also, the only thing that confuses me about this fight, is why did Claus kill himself? Like, I know he's a cyborg, but why does that matter if he remembers his family? I guess it's just one of those things where they can't face knowing all the pain they caused to the ones they love. But gosh dang it Claus, stop being emo. ;-;
It's probably because Claus's moment of lucidity was just that, a moment, and he wanted to end it before he could pull the seventh Needle.
