Like you, I use it mostly for PCVR, primarily for flightsims, DCS World, IL-2 and MSFS. HL Alyx and other shooters, now and then too.
The meager Pico store contents means little to me, as I prefer buying my games on Steam anyway. That way they can likely be played on whatever VR set I may get in the future.
I had some tracking issue one evening, but after turning up the lights, the jitter went completely away. Otherwise I've had no problems at all, and the picture quality and sweetspot is simply outstanding, compared to my old Index set.
    As far as I'm concerned, it's a keeper :)

Reading those Amazon reviews though, many people clearly are only using the native streaming app and not Virtual Desktop so I take the negative reviews with a massive pinch of salt as clearly a lot of them are people who have no idea how to go about making the resolution better

      Probably so.

And how do you make resolution better? Ggodin (developer of virtual desktop) says any resolution above 1440p looks worse with unticking "use optimal resolution" unchecked. The hdmi handshake wont use an active signal resolution above your monitor potentially locking you to 1080p. People can make a custom output resolution and use VD to see the desktop when your monitor black screens. It's a mess.

Sorry, i've got the pico 4 since a week now, i'm a vr enthusiast, i had the oculus dk1, dk2, the oculus cv1, the rift s and the Quest 2..i think I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, and my pico 4 is just F mess...and apart from 80% of the units having a dead pixel, APART from the fact that even having a resolution higher than the quest2 the screendoor effect is worse, apart all those things..NO WAY the morphing problem of the tracking is a "unit" thing. wow finally somebody goes over the issues - I had the nausea issue - after a factory reset it went away I have no idea why - I come from a Quest 1. As for "blurriness" in the standalone apps I spoke with the Puzzeling Places Devs and they said they have trouble getting a new version through the review process the version on the Pico store is basically the Pico 3 version still. It seems the Western App review is super understaffed.

On my Pico4 when I set the volume to the lowest level you could hear white noise from the speaker if you muted it the noise was gone so it was not the fan noise. I returned it to System Active in the UK for them to exchange it for a new one, unfortunately, or as it turns out fortunately they were out of stock so they gave me a refund, I have now ordered one from Very and I got 20% off the 256GB version, I saved £90.00. Just ordered and rec'd mine 2 weeks ago (I'm in the US, ordered the Global via Newegg). There was a system update for download from just a few weeks back which may have also addressed some things, but in my experience in regards some of the issues: Played Walkabout Mini Golf with no issues at all. Granted I haven't played it on Quest 2, but it certainly seemed to be plenty clear and sharp for my experience, and seems to be on par with what I've seen other youtube vids of Quest 2 playback of WMG? But again, maybe the updates have addressed things. No issues with wobble or motion moving around with it at all. No real bad screen door unless you really go looking, as you mention. No issues with lenses, be it foggy or soft spots, out of focus areas, nor scratches, or pixel issues. Also no build quality issues with my unit, I might have gotten lucky. Battery life is SOOOO variable based on what people are doing in regards to brightness, refresh, and so many settings that can affect it. Higher resolution, it's unlocked for more power, that sort of thing is gonna make differences and people that aren't used to that might be more prone to cranking everything up and complaining that they aren't getting everything. *** Not to say that any of those issues are all bogus or that there aren't any issues that some would experience but others won't though.
For me, I've had a great experience so far, and especially after swapping to a better wifi router to up the bandwidth for wireless SteamVR via Virtual Desktop it's been even better than when I originally turned it on. The game library is still slowly expanding, though I do hope that some of the games get more DLC content sooner than later. Hopefully as the unit stays out, devs will put more focus into it to get up to speed when for a long time devs had so much focus for Quest variants.

I tried half life and some other games and just wants blown away with it. I do wear glasses and to get a good fov I had it so tight to my face which in turn caused some discomfort. Again I realise this is a me issue and I was possibly expecting too much from it, however I did suffer from what edge to edge clarity which someone said about, I found the sweet spot to be extremely small.

I can definitely see the screen door effect though, feel like it is more prominent now after a month but it might just be me being more aware of what to look at. It is not that bad and I think it is hard not to see pixels on a screen being that close to it. Put your face 5cm from your 4k monitor, you will definitely see the pixels. What is annoying though is the difference in the contrast of the screens, the left seems to be more gray and gives a super annoying effect in some darker settings. I was one of the P4 testers. Got to try the early version and my final version as well as the version of a friend and had lots of chats about the devices with other people.
Tbh I think the biggest "issue" is people and subjectivity, I am one the guys that would say "It has noticeable SDE". I can see more SDE in all the devices I have tried than on my Q2 - which does not mean that the image is worse, it is only that the SDE (indivdual pixels) feel way more focused than in Q2 (which might be using an almost invisible diffusion layer).
Also the "black dots between pixels" I could see it on all 3 devices I have tried. That leads me to the conclusion it is the panels and how they are beeing made. They probably all have it. But some see it some dont, some might see it but dont get bothered by it.
I could also see a very uniform "Mura" on all 3 devices.
For the edge to edge clarity I think some people just dont get close enough to the lenses with the hard foam and deep gasket.
So my conclusion is it is mainly subjectivity and not QC.
Remember when MRTV actually got send multiple G2s by viewers so he could check if the edge to edge clarity or sweetspot is a problem with the lenses? Turned out they were all fine for him. But the people surely didnt send him their devies because they thought they were fine. It all comes down to subjective impression.

    • @stefanschuchardt5734

      @palmTreeeeee Рік тому +1

Or very good near sighted eyesight, versus not so good, mrtv has glasses and may be an indication as to why he couldn't tell there is an ultra small sharp sweetspot. What is strange is all of the big reviewers, such as Tyriel, flightsimguy also said the G2 had a great sweet spot in their pre-release reviews. But now most people agree it has a terrible sweet spot, edge to edge clarity and lenses

    • @DasJev
      @DasJev Рік тому +1

Your assumption and focus on subjective impressions ignores the actual optical and geometric variances of peoples faces.
For if your head is shaped diffrently, then the angle of the hmd like pitch, roll and yaw would be off relative to the lens and display. With that the the forehead cushion sits diffrently, back cushion sits at diffrent height, eyes are assymetric positioned in either of/or all 3 axis - where the most crucial is the eye to lens distance. Because if that is off, your sweet spot gets smaller, your fov varies, edges become more or less clear and here also the distortions vary as the distortion is calibrated to that distance.
Not everyone is able to calculate for all that and trying set it into the ideal position could be even difficult thanks to biologic or mechanical limitations.
For a proper evaluation only people who understand and try to mitigate those issues can have a proper understanding of how good that HMD actually is or is not. Those variances will be fixed one by one in the future but till then people need to know how things work and workout themselfs.
Without that you get a extreme amount of noise where things sound subjective, but it's just them or their HMD don't beeing the ideal combination.

I purchased a pico after a couple of weeks to play these, the only native title is virtual desktop.. I have none of the issues you mention. As soon as I setup my pico it said there was a firmware update, its now at 5.1.0. Perhaps this addressed most software issues. I have seen a video about extending the battery life. There is definitely some screen glare. Only noticeable when you have whit on black background (like the Pico logo on boot). It’s not light bleed. It’s as if the light from the screen is bouncing off the lenses if that makes sense
The next is slight nausea. This doesn’t happen often & could be my wireless network for PCVR
    Creaking controllers
Lastly the sound. It has a slight hiss. Could almost mistake it for fan noise - It’s definitely not
I must say that even with the above, it’s still my go to headset atm. The pros outweigh the cons. I may well move back to the Quest when they release the 3 but for now it’s still the winner for me

If you’re feeling the front pad or the back pad being hard, it means it’s on too tight and yes it’s uncomfortable. Also, the back pad should be higher than the front at an angle when mounted. If you have light leakage on the sides, Jerry rig a paper tape on the sides for now until there’s vr cover.

My experience as an early adopter. Started in 2016 with the vive and in 2020 the oculus q1 ;)
Damn I was hyped about the P4! Pc support! Wow
    First the don't likes
    - Paying an extra 20 for VD to make it work for pc as I like my res.
    - Software updates are lacking. Still on vers. 5.1. Up to date yet seeing others using vers. 5.2. Rollout is common and hope 5.3 is a mayor difference
    - Steam vr games support even with VD aren't working wright (Star Wars Squadrons, Kayak Vr to name a few)
    - The pancake lenses do create the looking through a veil effect when viewing movies in most theatres in VD. Dark games should only be played on oled panels!
    - Wired is a no go, for now. It's low res. and stutters via cable (software issues?)
    - An all in one cable that has integrated an audio input plug, streaming and charging capabilities doesn't exist
    - Dry eyes when nose flap is used
    - Battery life time is not what is advertised it to be
    - You need an uber pc to drive them subpixelspixels is a given
    - When lowering settings ingame sometimes doesn't make a difference in fps in certain games
    - Not a fan of wifi because I don't want to be an antenna in that way
    - Being an early adopter takes a lot of patience
    The likes
    - The hmd and controller looks and feel (I fell for it)
    - Price
    - Comfort! It's well balanced
    - Pancake lenses are very clear. While every lens has its drawbacks and pos., I''ll take it
    - Higher resolution when using ss in steam for subpixel rendering
    - Only when having an uber pc and some pc vr games do work wireless, it's really stunning!! Wow effect
    - I'll give the P4 another week or 3, otherwise I'm selling my hmd
    - Can't wait for the P5. When most software issues and necessary hardware implementations are fixed and understood by then. ''personal''
    - Surprise moi and you can do it pico!

Can confirm the shaky quality control. Had four 256GB models now and all went back for a different issue.
    1. Had a darker right display:
Looked like I had bad night vision on one eye. In dark environments the details were gone and I only saw black.
    Very irritating.
    2. Was fine ... until the second week. Then the fan inside went berserk on me and made a sound like a F1 car hitting the speed limiter.
    3. Had a misaligned right lens. Moving the Headset up or looking down gave me the feeling that my eyesight on one side had gone bad. And only the bottom halve of the lens ! (fits with the sweet spot reports)
    4. Lens warping in the middle of the view field. Moving the head left and right had the picture in front of me warp significantly.
Did not have this on the first two. did not check on the third.
And there seems to be a difference in tracking between headsets. The first one had a very nervous tracking.
Even talking did let it become very unstable. Tapping on the back did drive into a tracking frenzy.
Second one did not have that problem.
    Third one again the same.
And forth one was ok again.
So maybe two manufactures of the g-sensor chips that are supporting the camera (or even a defect camera?)?
Had a friend returning it for one squeeky controller.
2 had the dark display problem too.
lens warping seems to be a issue on 50-60% of the headsets, but no one seems to notice since it´s their first one.
I got a Valve Index an a quest2 and did notice this right from the start on my 4th one.
first two were fine an also the headsets of my friends ( all preordered units)

Great video Karl. I have been trying to get my PICO 4 to work the way I wanted to. I could not get a clear image no matter what I would try. I was especially disappointed about the edge-to-edge clarity. I would get dizzy after a very short time of using it. It's my first experience using a VR-headset, so it's difficult to to tell wether it's a faulty unit or part of the VR-experience. In the end I decided to return it. Maybe try out another one/brand in the near future.

I upgraded to Pico 4 from old Rift S - bought from Amazon UK on 19 Dec 2022 - to be honest if I had seen this video before buying it might have put me off completely. I use for PC VR only to a high-end VR rig to racing and flight sims, and also some VR Chat type social stuff. I have none of the problems mentioned with pixels or bad lenses. I did notice though that the way the lenses work, they are able top reflect and produce "phantom" reflections in front of you from things that are bright and right behind you. I had my headset on and saw a bright circular reflection and didn't know where it was coming from - turned out it was reflection of the landing light bulb outside the darkened bedroom I was in! It was leaking in the tiny crack on side of my eye! The only thing I noticed which is not great is the battery life... it does seem to drain very fast, even when plugged into a USB C charger cable during use. Not sure if my battery is just weaker or something. Anyway ... I think you should DEFINITELY do a "three months later" update on your current state now, any improvements you noticed to software, anything got worse etc... would like to see that.

Mine's going back. Bear in mind it's my first VR set and deciding whether or not I could get on with it was the reason I bought from Amazon in the first place.
Primarily, I had a severe motion sickness issue when I got shot down in DCS - it lasted an hour or so.
The streamed quality isn't wonderful (3080, VD, etc.) compared to my 2560 x 1440 monitor. If it's "better than the Quest", I can only imagine how bad that would be...
I also have the short battery life problem - I thought that was just the PCVR streaming over Wifi.
As I said, this was an experiment for me, and my conclusion is that VR isn't for me...

There is some light leak, and glare on the lenses but this is acceptable to me, because the improvement over the lower res and onion ring lenses of the Q1 is still remarkable.
I think the standalone VR side is somewhat wanting. There's very little on the store that I haven't already bought and played on the Quest. And the firmware is lagging a long way behind Meta regards QoL and features.

I bought two ( one for my partner) and I really enjoy the time with the pico. Mostly using it for PCVR as everything looks so damn good. I bought a few games from the store and immediately noticed that they looked blocky and washed out compared to my quest2. So I started thinking, either Developers port it over the easiest possible way as the pico is new and there is not a big market for it yet, so why risking putting a lot of work in a proper port if you dont know that it pays out in the end.
With Red matter2 coming out, that is not yet on the quest 2 and developers already noted that it will look much better as the pico4 has a lot more power that can be used for a better high quality experience.
Pico4 is the first competitor to the quest2 and probably many buyers thought they get a product thats right out of the box much better then quest2 which is on the market for several years now. Of course its not, there is a lot of work to be done on the software side so all of the people returning them I guess are very inpatient ( except its a proper hardware defect) . Quest2 was not that great in the beginning also, but over time it got better, its going to be the same with the pico4. I think it is super important that meta has a competitor now, I mean just look at all the announcements from meta since the pico4 is on the market, its crazy, so much new stuff, innovations and updates.
On reddit we solved so many cases of new VR user buying a pico4 as for example "edge to edge clarity" was taken word by word, but thats not how it works, even the pancake lenses do look blurry on the edges, but its so much better then with older headsets using Fresnel lenses but as its their first headset and have nothing to compare it to they think its broken, there were people on reddit receiving their 3rd pico4 and got all mad because of that not perfect " edge to edge" clarity. and many many other cases where it wasnt the picos fault.
I am not a fan boy of pico nor quest2, I have a lot of other headsets so I always try to see it from a neutral position and you have to admit the fanbase of quest2 by now smokes the picos, and thats kind of sad. People have to understand that when there is no competition you pretty much have to take whats there or leave it and with that you have to accept all of what includes it as there is no other option to choose from. Just like with Nvidia, they can basically do whatever they want as amd just doest come close really or take intel as an example, their prices before AMD stepped up their game were through the roof, but with proper competition they had to lower the prices big time which is good for us the consumer.
We should not take sides because those big companies are definitely not our good friendly neighbor's they want you to think they are. I love my Pico and I am very excited for what the future will bring.

I have a couple of faults with mine. There is image warping in both lenses, which looks like pincushion or maybe even moustache distortion. It's easy to notice when looking around in a static scene (like Pico home), but fortunately not very noticeable in game. Distortion is less than my Pimax 5k+, which I got used to, so it isn't quite a dealbreaker.
The second issue is my left screen is slightly brighter than the right. Most of the time it isn't detectable, but it can really look bad in some dark environments; causing you to see textures in the left eye that do not appear in the right (and that can be nauseating). I should exchange it under warranty, though after reading so many bad reviews I'm half afraid I'll just get a worse unit with dead pixels or mura.

Fast forward 2 weeks and I been having to go back to my quest2 despite it weighing like a tank (with the vive head strap and a battery mod). I've found that in low light scenarios, like trying to watch a movie in vrchat is unbearable. The lens just has this like haze, glare effect. It washes out everything in view, like having a dirty lenses that you can't wipe off. Sadly I'm in the states and bought it off an unauthorized dealer so I'm stuck with it. But the main reason I sent them back is some fan blew air towards my eyes. The first one was actually quite warm air. Just after 30 min of usage I got serious dizziness because of some distortion and then huge eye pain cause of those air issues. It is so shame because it could be a very good upgrade from q2. The pencace lens clarity it just mind-blowing but with these issues it is just not usable.

Yes, resolution is higher, FOV either. But, image is darker therefore it seems not so sharp for my eyes. Even in Home Screen where resolution must be native. Indicators in aircraft cockpit also look not so sharp, no benefit in front of quest 2, I had to move closer to the panel to see digits on some of indicators. By the way I connected glasses with PC via usb cable. It is way too buggy. So I decided to return it to the seller. What's the point of higher resolution if none of the few apps there got it and the cable makes it even worse.

Anybody notice a slight warping towards the middle part of their vision with pico 4? As if the lens wasn’t aligned as it should and its gives a slight distortion in the image as you pan around slowly. It’s not noticeable though once I’m in a game. Despite that, if pico can fix the SA usb mode, definitely a great bargain compared to quest pro for pcvr.

Can I ask a question or can anyone help me out. No matter whether I am in the environment scene page, home page or playing a video. The graphics all have a mesh over them. The screen door effect. The mountains in the home scene page. The earth and planet outside the space window. When watching UA-cam inside it or a video, just meshy graphics. I have a great internet connection and all connections are fine. is this what VR should be as this is my first ever headset, or is expecting a crisp image with it saying 4k display too much?
I see everyone's vidoes on UA-cam of them in their home page and its so clear. Are they linked up by wires instead of wireless. Its so frustrating that nothing on mine is crisp?

So, I tried a lot of HMD’s so far, PCVR only ones and mostly all of the Standalone ones with Wireless PCVR, I gotta say this one is the worst so far if it comes to the company own Software which forces you to either buy VD for 20buck or just go for a more compatible HMD such as a Q2.

So in order to get virtual desktop I have to download the Pico VR apk from a third party to the headset. So it's not a good start. I logged in online and tried but ACG blocked it as a threat....I had same problem with a DJI drone I bought could not install any of the software that was needed to use the thing. Looks like selling a product is more important than customer service.

After about three weeks of use still no issues whatsoever. Bought the Pico 4 for wireless PCVR with Virtual Desktop and that works as well as with my Quest 2 which is now for sale.
Love the pancake lenses with 105x105 FOV and especially the 40% less weight hanging in front of my head!
The front heavy Quest 2 was only good for 60-90 minuutes of gaming, the Pico 4 is way more comfortable and I can wear it for hours... (5000mA powerbank between the stap on the back balances out the front to back weight perfectly and gives 4-5 hours of playtime)
The facial cover gets softer every week, but I hope to see a cover to get closer to the lenses, there is a lot of space and a FOV of 115x115 could be possible!
Pico 4 games will get better, read on Reddit that a lot of developers are stil waiting for Pico to update their games to full resolution, but I can't recommend the Pico 4 for standalone gaming for now...
Got the Logitech Chorus on order to give it a try, it's a Quest accesoiry but fits well enough with some velcro straps or double sided tape to hold it in place.

I returned my one after 5-6 hours of trying to get it working with PCVR.
I use a Q2 (90fps) with iracing and it’s amazing and buying a Pico 4 I was hoping for better clarity, I was wrong. I couldnt even get it was run on medium setting and at more than 45fps.
The headset I found to be uncomfortable, rear pad was so hard, and the cover let lots of light in, I was expecting a bit but not loads. The light that was in the lens, from this, was very distracting.
There seems to be a smudge on the inside of the lens which was distracting and the render resolution was terrible.
I run a higher spec PC (12900k 3090ti) and was expecting better.
The q2 is so much better even with inferior lenses

I just returned mine. In my case, it had a weird bug in which the right controller's trigger button, while being functional (if I pressed it I could see the button on the simulated controller being pressed, and also I could fire weapons in games as far as I could see) it didn't register as being pressed in menus, which was annoying. Also the image has a weird fish-eye effect which is very annoying. I don't know, between that and all the negative and neutral reviews, something about this product didn't say "durability" and "quality" for me.
But I loved that the image was much clearer than in Q2

Battery tanks on mine too, lucky if it gets an hour. Pain on forehead after a minute or two with pressure from face pad. Really bad lenses, high contrast glare, a wavy distortion when turning head. Blurry overall image, just not crisp on edge of text whereever I look on the lens. There is a consistency in edge to edge clarity, but its not crystal clear. Really bad wifi connection, around 2mbps on wifi, but quest gets 30+. I'll probably try and get a return or replacement to see if this is a QC issue, or if using razor sharp aspheric lenses has raised my expectations too high.
edit: I also forgot the mura grain. I may just be more sensitive to these lenses issues as I've not been using fresnel lenses for a while, and most people are coming to pico from fuzzy fresnel

Much better display, lenses, colours (in my opinion), battery life is acceptable, the face cover has become more comfortable after multiple uses, the strap is comfortable enough, but I've had to slightly mod it with more padding. Tracking issues to begin with but with the software updates it's been fixed. No other issues with warping etc.
