Animated was my introduction to the Dinobots since they were absent in the Unicron trilogy and I wasn’t aware of the Grimlock and Swoop Energon two-pack. I was confused that Snarl was the Stegosaurus in FOC when I first played it since the Triceratops one in Animated was Snarl. I like that the Dinobots get new members such as Strafe in IDW and Slash the Velociraptor in the Power of the Primes toyline. Cyberverse’s concept of the Dinobots was interesting with Grimlock being the only one from Cybertron and the other four are from a different planet. Swoop is my favorite of the subgroup! I also find it interesting that all of the other Dinobots’ names start with an “S” instead of Grimlock’s name.
The most infamous Dinobot moment came in "Desertion Of The Dinobots," where, if it hadn't been for Swoop spiriting them away, Grimlock would have crushed Sparkplug, Spike, and Carly. The Decepticons would have then repaired themselves with Cybertonium, slaughtered all the Autobots aboard the Ark, overpowered the Dinos, then drained and enslaved Earth. YEESH!
The more you do these retrospectives…the more I wish Hasbro would have been brave enough to create a new animation based heavily on the G1 comics. Those stories seem to have deep impact over time.
Although combiners are my favorite part of transformers, I think the Dinobots should stay as they originally were. I'm glad the SS86 toys exist as worthy modern updates. I do have both the PotP, and the TT recolor of Volcanicus. It's a cool novelty to go along with my other combiners, but when I think of the Dinobots, the OG team is the best IMHO

Swoop is my favorite dinobot but Slash is my second favorite. Michael Bell did an amazing performance for his voice. And Slash, well I love me a clever Raptor girl. I really hope Slash reappears later on with the rest of the Dinobots or if she gets an updated figure for legacy. Seems like a waste not to include a Raptor for the Dinobot team imo.
Fun Fact 1.5: The Studio Series 86 Dinobot toys were released in that same order of introduction as seen in the cartoon: Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Snarl, and Swoop.
Hey, Rodimus, nice take on the Dinobots!!! After all, the cartoon gave us 3, then 2 more. Total of 5, one of whom was missing during the 1986 movie but was featured in Season 3!! Using the scene from Dino-Riders as example, it is no wonder Trypticon and Sky-Lynx had those in their circuits. Pity about the 5 of them not being combiner-class but their firepower scared off the Constructicons. Having recently watched Power of the Primes, the 5 of them mainly Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Snarl & Swoop could become Vulcanicus. Keep more of your video reels rolling, bro, this can't get any older than it already is!! Till all are One!!!

I have always love the Dinobots as a someone who love paleontology. They were always my favorite among other transformers. In my au the Dinobots are cybertronians that spread across the universe and colonized a planet where Mesozoic animal still exist. These cybertronian gained their alt mode and live on the planet energon. However when the space bridge was destroyed to prevent the spread of cosmic rust. Many revert back to into their animalistic side of their alt mode like the g1 Dinobots And after autobot discovered the Dinobots manage to reprogram to their normal self. The Dinobot would team up with the autobot to defeat the decepticons dinoforce, g1 predacons ( from a Cenozoic home world), and some terrorcons like blot, and cutthroat who originate from the Dinobot home world due to them having a Excavaraptor and Hatzegopteryx alt mode.

I am! These would be great opportunities and excuses to retool and recolor of the Studio Series Dinobots! We need figures to these guys! Especially Scorn! He needs and deserves having a figure of his own!!
I definitely would love a Paddles & Skarr to scale with the SS86 dinos. Strafe and Scorn might be a bit of a reach, but more dinos is never a bad thing. The PotP Slash was actually a pretty good figure and technically already scales pretty well with SS86. Lastly, I'd like to see Kakuryu from the Deception Dinoforce, who eventually joined the Dinobots and changed his name to Grimmaster, get an update as well.
The dinobots are my favorite team along with the constructicons! Currently i only have the animated versions but i did have the power of the primes along with bayverse ones really want the g1 figs! Great video🎉
My first regular comic was Transformers Marvel UK#45 which was the story The Icarus Theory a Swoop story continuing into Dinobot Hunt. Those six issues made me a Transformers. My favourite Dinobot is Sludge.

Slag is my favorite for Three reasons. He's a triceratops, which was always my favorite dinosaur as a kid. In the movie he's the only one who actually gets a shot in on Devastator. He also has one of my favorite lines in the movie,when he says excuse me, when they rescue Hot Rod and Kup.
A more than awesome review. I love the original and this new one is even cooler. I loved the original G1 dinobots. I was not liking the stories of them combing. They were never made to combine. The dinobots will always be my favorite team.
The Dinobots and Monsterbots should have been in the G1 cartoon in an all out showdown. They did not even need to combine, just kick ass with no hesitation.
I've actually had a little story in My head in which Megatron has Shockwave create 5 new Dinobots to take on the original team. They consist of Scorn, Scowl, Paddles, Slash and My own original character Slam who becomes a Pachycephalosaurs.
I remember letter-answerer Grimlock saying he wouldn't want to combine with the rest of his team, and as he was suspected to actually be Simon Furman at the time, that's good enough for me
G2 Slug (Slag) was my first ever Transformers figure. I sadly lost track of it years ago, but have been hoping for a recolor of Studio Series 86 figure might be released someday. With Grimlock, I always chuckle at how his in brief time beinh intelligent, Greg Berger used the same voice he used for Jetfire/Skyfire.
If they ever do another Volcanicus release, then I imagine the Dinobots having two combined modes. One for the robot mode, the other for the dragon mode.

I take a retcon perspective on where the Dinobots mythology should be. Like Bob Budiansky wrote they were five warriors repaired by the Ark and part of the repairs were to their damaged cognitive centers. To replace the damaged brains the observed behavior of dinosaurs (combat and social) were input into their brain to rehabilitate their minds. The combination of Cybertronic brains with those patterns created an unusually powerful warrior who excelled beyond the limits of their design. This is why Decepticons spent so much time trying to develop animal based transformers, they wanted to reconstruct their success. But since the original dinosaurs are lost to history they can never recreate the magic of the Dinobots and every beast creation never matched them.
i grew up with the transformers back in the 80's. one thing i never stop thought about back then when i was a kid. but now as an adult. i have rewatched lot of the old cartoons & it got me thinking. if the autobot's made the dinobots. then why did megatron make he's own dinobot's. match power with power.
I have remembered seeing age of extinction and when I was the grimlock I was like holy shoot at the time I didn’t know the Dinobots that are dinosaur thought they transformed into there robot mode until my sister saw the toy that they transformed into robot mode and Dino mode and I was excepting a giant car
The two new dinobots Slash transformed into a velociraptor, and Skar transformed into ankylosaurus, I certainly do wish they appeared in the transformers generation one and also they could combine into Volcanicus in the series generation one as well
Great video as always, sir! I was reminded of an observation I made long ago, and I don’t know if it’s just me or everybody thinks so. But is Swoop basically the closest we got to an Autobot Seeker? His design and the way he transforms have elements we see in seekers, wings on the back, "nose" on the chest.
The Dinobots were the best Autobots that you can count on. Grimlock (Tyrannosaur), Slag (Slug) (Triceratops), Snarl (Stegosaur), Sludge (Brontosaurus), Swoop (pterodactyl), Slash (Raptor) to have these powerful robo dinos into the mighty Volcanous. Grimlock: “Me Grimlock no bozo, Me King.!”
But it was later established that only Vector Sigma was able to grant Transformers life. Wheeljack and Ratchet just created them on their own, so they could be considered a artificial intelligence while the other Transformers are actually "alive".

The weirdest part of this whole thing is that in 1980s Marvel UK comics they still called him Slag. It only became a problem decades, because people today are apparently too stupid to understand context. (Or, more likely, it's just the heads of corporations that are too stupid.)

I didn't appreciate Grimlock until I read the Marvel comics by Simon Furman. I just thought Grimlock was a big dummy in the cartoon. I personally love Volcanicus
Volcanicus would have never worked in the G1 Cartoon Animation, solely for the intelligence factor. Individually they weren't very bright, so combining into one larger robot would have been illogical. Terracons Abominus was not that smart, so Volcanicus would have equal in low intelligence or worse. It might have been interesting to see Volcanicus vs Predaking...
For cyber verse using the classic team is the one thing I have issues with because snarl showing up feels more like G one fan service because the video that inspired their civilization did not include a stegosaurus. They could’ve used an opportunity to give a lesser use Dinobot some time in the spotlight instead of just going for G1 fan service.
I had Snarl as a kid so I guess I'm picking him as a favorite. As tempting as it is to want the Dinobots to merge, I'm going to pass on that option. In my opinion the name "Volcanicus" for the merged form of the Dinobots is stupid. I loved when the Predacons and the Dinobots would get into arguments and fights. G1 Dinobots forever.

Also Grimlock is a real badass. Only three Autobots could kick around Megatron/Galvatron. Prime, Omega Supreme and him, but also Sludge, and Rodimus, Also I like to think of the Dinobots as the Autobot swat team, Also Skar, Scorn, Paddles/Splash, and Slash theirs almost enough 6th member Dinobots to make a auxiliary team. But still almost everybody (as of 2024) loves the Dinobots. Thanks for the update, Also Animated was my introduction to the Dinobots since they were absent in the Unicron Trilogy Also Cyberverse's concept of the Dinobots was interesting but Spectacular and my best and most favorite Version of the Dinobots was The Cyberverse version of the Dinobots with Grimlock being the only one from Cybertron and the other four are from a different planet. Sludge is my favorite of the Cyberverse Subgroup! I also find it interesting that all of the other Dinobots names start with an "S" instead of Grimlock's name. Also The Dinobots especially and inculding the G1 Cartoon Dinobots were the best and greatest special team, the Autobots could ever have had, and I still wish Volcanicus could have been something since 1984, Also This is the best Thanksgiving late gift. Keep doing what you're doing, buddy. I have three of the Dinobots personally G1 Cartoon Grimlock, also I planned to pre-order both G1 Cartoon Studio Series 86 Snarl and Swoop later this year both of us care for strength and being the leader. Swoop is my favorite not just because he can fly but that's he's the smartest out of all. Snarl is my second favorite and he's totally underrated, Slag is my third Favorite and he's totally Kick Butt and he's Determined and pissed, Sludge is my fourth favorite because of his kind and gentle nature but also of his courage, Strength, Determination, fighting skills, and his beware of the nice ones personality, but also his gentle nature, and Grimlock is my best and most favorite Dinobot because he's the Leader and commander of The Dinobots but also he's an arrogant but Valiant and Courageous Warrior and Autobot but also ferocity, Also The Dinobots were really awesome! No matter what version they are. Also I like but also love the Dinobots they have been my favorite team back during my childhood. The best one will always be G1! Also my other favorite Dinobot is the Aligned RID version of Grimlock and my other Favorite Versions of the Dinobots are the Aligned/Rescue Bots version of the Dinobots, Also Grimlock is still my favorite Dinobot and Cyberverse is my favorite incarnation of him, Also my best and most favorite Version of the Dinobots was The G1 Cartoon versions of the Dinobots even though they were made Comic Relief Characters by Season 3 and the never before released Seasons 4,5,6, & 7, they were still and always will be Badass heroes/Autobots when they were first created, When the Autobots need brute force, they call upon their Prehistoric warriors, The Dinobots! I am! These would be great opportunities and excuses to retool and recolor of the Studio Series Dinobots! We need figures to these guys! Especially Scorn! He needs and deserves having a figure of his own!!
I definitely would love a Paddles & Skarr to scale with the SS86 dinos. Strafe and Scorn might be a bit of a reach, but more dinos is never a bad thing. The PotP Slash was actually a pretty good figure and technically already scales pretty well with SS86. Lastly, I'd like to see Kakuryu from the Deception Dinoforce, who eventually joined the Dinobots and changed his name to Grimmaster, get an update as well.
The dinobots are my favorite team along with the constructicons! Currently i only have the animated versions but i did have the power of the primes along with bayverse ones really want the g1 figs! Great video🎉

Indeed. He did this segment for me back in my original version of this back in 2017. I decided to keep it since it was one of my first skits.
My first regular comic was Transformers Marvel UK#45 which was the story The Icarus Theory a Swoop story continuing into Dinobot Hunt. Those six issues made me a Transformers.
My favourite Dinobot is Sludge.

Slag is my favorite for Three reasons. He's a triceratops, which was always my favorite dinosaur as a kid. In the movie he's the only one who actually gets a shot in on Devastator. He also has one of my favorite lines in the movie,when he says excuse me, when they rescue Hot Rod and Kup.

The Dinobots and Monsterbots should have been in the G1 cartoon in an all out showdown. They did not even need to combine, just kick ass with no hesitation.
I've actually had a little story in My head in which Megatron has Shockwave create 5 new Dinobots to take on the original team. They consist of Scorn, Scowl, Paddles, Slash and My own original character Slam who becomes a Pachycephalosaurs.
I remember letter-answerer Grimlock saying he wouldn't want to combine with the rest of his team, and as he was suspected to actually be Simon Furman at the time, that's good enough for me

G2 Slug (Slag) was my first ever Transformers figure. I sadly lost track of it years ago, but have been hoping for a recolor of Studio Series 86 figure might be released someday.

I take a retcon perspective on where the Dinobots mythology should be. Like Bob Budiansky wrote they were five warriors repaired by the Ark and part of the repairs were to their damaged cognitive centers. To replace the damaged brains the observed behavior of dinosaurs (combat and social) were input into their brain to rehabilitate their minds. The combination of Cybertronic brains with those patterns created an unusually powerful warrior who excelled beyond the limits of their design. This is why Decepticons spent so much time trying to develop animal based transformers, they wanted to reconstruct their success. But since the original dinosaurs are lost to history they can never recreate the magic of the Dinobots and every beast creation never matched them.

The Dreamwave comics works with the Marvel comics origins and War for Cybertron. I like them being simple but not stupid.
Oddly rewatching a lets play of fall of Cybertron. Sludge isn't dead when found in the game by Jazz, he is in stasis lock.

i grew up with the transformers back in the 80's. one thing i never stop thought about back then when i was a kid. but now as an adult. i have rewatched lot of the old cartoons & it got me thinking. if the autobot's made the dinobots. then why did megatron make he's own dinobot's. match power with power.
I have remembered seeing age of extinction and when I was the grimlock I was like holy shoot at the time I didn’t know the Dinobots that are dinosaur thought they transformed into there robot mode until my sister saw the toy that they transformed into robot mode and Dino mode and I was excepting a giant car

I was reminded of an observation I made long ago, and I don’t know if it’s just me or everybody thinks so. But is Swoop basically the closest we got to an Autobot Seeker? His design and the way he transforms have elements we see in seekers, wings on the back, "nose" on the chest.
The Dinobots were the best Autobots that you can count on. Grimlock (Tyrannosaur), Slag (Slug) (Triceratops), Snarl (Stegosaur), Sludge (Brontosaurus), Swoop (pterodactyl), Slash (Raptor) to have these powerful robo dinos into the mighty Volcanous.

But it was later established that only Vector Sigma was able to grant Transformers life. Wheeljack and Ratchet just created them on their own, so they could be considered a artificial intelligence while the other Transformers are actually "alive".

The weirdest part of this whole thing is that in 1980s Marvel UK comics they still called him Slag. It only became a problem decades, because people today are apparently too stupid to understand context. (Or, more likely, it's just the heads of corporations that are too stupid.)

Volcanicus would have never worked in the G1 Cartoon Animation, solely for the intelligence factor. Individually they weren't very bright, so combining into one larger robot would have been illogical. Terracons Abominus was not that smart, so Volcanicus would have equal in low intelligence or worse. It might have been interesting to see Volcanicus vs Predaking...

For cyber verse using the classic team is the one thing I have issues with because snarl showing up feels more like G one fan service because the video that inspired their civilization did not include a stegosaurus. They could’ve used an opportunity to give a lesser use Dinobot some time in the spotlight instead of just going for G1 fan service.
I had Snarl as a kid so I guess I'm picking him as a favorite.
As tempting as it is to want the Dinobots to merge, I'm going to pass on that option.
In my opinion the name "Volcanicus" for the merged form of the Dinobots is stupid.
