Despite not growing up with G1 I hope that some Transformers characters like Hoist, Trailbreaker, Grapple, Windcharger etc can get more attention in shows, movies and comics in the franchise because they deserve to become more prominent and well known characters
Hoist is certainly an important background player. He isn't meant to be center stage for long, but he carries his weight behind the scenes filling in important duties.
I miss the craziness in the G1 cartoons from the puns, dialogues, and a lot of fun, dedicated episodes for the other Autobot characters like Hoist, Beachcomber, Omega Supreme, and Powerglide.
IDW Hoist is the perfect rendition of the character to me. Not every Cybertronian needs to be an insane soldier in the battlefield. Sometimes they can just be some guy doing his job.
Moist is easily one of my favorite 80s G1 Transformer toys, mainly because it was one of the more cartoon accurate figures. I still think he looks great. Hoist needs more attention for sure.
Rodimus, as soon as I saw that Hoist's Retrospective was up next, I knew you'd have to throw in your customary "...Met his end at the hands of an Underbase-powered Starscream." DAMN ISSUE 50 OF THE MARVEL COMIC!!! 😂
He definitely does, he’s probably the best natured autobot and an all around loveable guy. Great design too. They should give Ratchet a break and give Hoist a little more loving from time to time.
🍀 Whether people notice him or not, Hoist is just happy to do his job. No recognition needed. He would make for a perfect recurring background character who maybe gets name dropped, or even a couple lines, every now and then would be the most fitting role for him. Happy St. Patrick's Day. I see you picked a green character so he wouldn't get pinched during his retrospective.
I really hope Hasbro will give Hoist a chance to finally "hoist" himself into the spotlight and become a popular Transformers character. The same for Grapple, he can "grapple" his way up the popularity ladder.
7:05 I have to tell you the story of how I got a "prize" from Marvel. At the back of this issue, Marvel had a contest. This drawn image was shown again, with just the outlines of all the Autobots. Inside the outlines of each Autobot was a number. Marvel encouraged every reader to mail in (it was the 80s, remember) a list of the numbered Autobots. If you guessed correctly, you would win a prize. It was a crappy iron-on TF decal, but what did you expect from 1980s Marvel, the creators of the Marvel "No-Prize".
With all honesty, Hoist is the kind of bot to be humble enough that whenever there's an important event or the autobots want to celebrate, he will grill the energon equivalent of a patty for everyone to eat.
Admittedly i feel hoists job description makes him admittedly easy to mix up with ratchet. Also i didn't know hoists g1 character model had an incomplete side window until the MP toy had one and gave me confusion (i always thought they were complete)

Always enjoyed the Hoist character. Thank you for this, and for always highlighting the less popular Transformers. If you ever get a chance, please do a breakdown of all the different jobs/roles each Autobot did for the team. Like how Beachcomber was a geologist or Swerve was a scientist.
I always wondered what was up with why Hoist was a decepticon in TF Animated! Another great mystery solved in a Rodimus Primal retrospective! Question: Will you ever consider making a video about the human characters throughout the Transformers franchise? Or at least a Spike retrospective?
Always liked Hoist. Not sure why but I would guess I have a soft spot for the more unobstrusive background characters which leave more to the imagination. If I were to choose favourite Autobots I might even say Hoist only after Wheeljack and the Dinobots in general. Not including Optimus of course. Nice to see this retrospective in any case as I was just recently rewatching season 1 and 2. Even had me going all in on that Menasor pack. I'm not sorry. Genius. Good times.
I think if he just shows up more as a secondary character, always helping out but never taking the spotlight while still retaining his own personality, I wouldn't mind a bit
13:05 selects? I saw some at my ross last November when my aunt visited but i see lift ticket and blue repaint as McDonald's and burger King crossover toys 😆
I actually didn't know Longarm was recolored into Hoist until a year or so ago, and right away I went to seek one out because Longarm is one of my favorite movie figures and Hoist's deco looked pretty cool
Just so you know, the animated Hoist seen in the almanac was made without the approval of art director Derrick Wyatt or Head Writer Marty Isenberg. Derrick I think even made another design for Hoist, since he didn't like the propaganda actor being retconned to be Hoist.
I'm sure he'll get to him eventually. Rodimus Primal has many planned retrospectives already in the works, which usually have a G1 character as the focus then leading into the variants seen over the years.
LMAO I just realize the episode Hoist goes to Hollywood predicted the future for the bayfilms. Humans hogging the spotlight, Huge explosions and even getting names wrong/changing them (yes it's because of legal reasons but still). I was a little disappointed the he was absent in Energon and Cybertron cartoon. I enjoyed his arc in Armada and it confused me why he, blurr didn't show up.

If there's an autobot who needs to be in the movies, it's hoist. If that movie is being written and produced, it's thunderacker. If the movie has a star, well, it's hard to tell who 😅 if I get hoist I'll probably make him an actor and a Lego Micheal Bay and thundercracker can produce movies.

Honestly, Hoist and Grapple deserve a sitcom of roommates duo working like Mario and Luigi.
Let's Hope Hosit and Grapple Return Together in the Future someday

I remember that Hoist (G1) had a cameo appearance in Transformers Rid 2015 which means that he might be the guardian of Hoist in Rescue Bots Academy
According to idw transformers raised by older transformers are mentors parental figures
And then TFwiki just decided to say, "they're the same bot".
Yeah...sure...
Moist is easily one of my favorite 80s G1 Transformer toys, mainly because it was one of the more cartoon accurate figures. I still think he looks great. Hoist needs more attention for sure.
That episode where Hoist became a Hollywood actor was a prediction of just how bad the Michael Bay Transformers franchise would be.

The country doctor of the Autobots! I always liked this guy, and I hope we see him featured in the new Skybouund series!
I know absolutely nothing about those comics other than "an underbase powered Starscream" (whatever an underbase is) killed literally everyone.

I really liked G1 Hoist, at least he was someone you could remember unlike Skids. He was also smart enough to stay out of the Bay movies, lol.
That hollyhood ep did predict the future of the franchise. I never realize it before
When the autobots are sitting in their chairs on the movie set the back of Tracks chair says Trucks instead of Tracks 🤣🤣🤣 4:52.
Speaking of unnoticed bots, that last shot. Poor Skids.

I had Hoist back in the mid 1980’s, and was one of my favorite season 2 Autobots. Just wished Hasbro spared him for the Movie and season 3.
He just didn't appear in Season 3. It's a rule of thumb that if you didn't see him die, you don't have a body, you have no proof of death.
The scene where hoist drives huffer is wild
