I can’t remember the exact episode, but I’m fairly sure this was the instrument Spock used whilst meditating over a long lost love. Whilst its definitely not everyones cup of Vulcan Chai, if its yours, its a truly wonderful machine. Live long and prosper!
I absolutely adore my Terra! 💙 It sounds *fantastically* rich, deep, and engaging. I recommend using the balanced outputs, if at all possible, when recording. The headphone out is also perfect for sitting somewhere quiet and simply exploring--which this is uniquely designed to encourage.
@@improziv Certainly. In my setup the interconnect runs are long (over 3m) and gear is connected to different AC sources. Also, from mixer/interface to monitor preamp/amplifiers--everything has balanced input/output.
I had the most fun a SuperBooth playing this synth: you’re not always sure what going on, but it always sounds as though it’s on the edge of something truly great! I’m totally sold.
FM and RIng Mod are the most interesting modifiers in a synth, for me. It's so cool to see them embraced in such a way for the Engine modifiers. Overall, the Soma Terra has to be considered an astounding instrument. In a brave new world of digital comms and things like AI and robotics, this for me is human-computer interaction at its pinnacle. Bravo!
This is quite a coincidence - was just thinking the other week that instead of the current MPE controller approaches, it might be better to have something like a wind instrument where the fingers don't move much or at all, and thus be able to play notes more rapidly with some other form of expression.
Terra is... amazing. Many pay thousands of dollars for a hand pan... getting one sound and set of notes. This has THOUSANDS of different sounds / tones / note sets / synths / modulations. Epic. And can play similarly to a hand pan etc. I was fortunate to be an early signee... got mine... and literally get lost noodling every time. I am not a pianist... so this is a musical blast. Terra is... amazing.
Handpan isn’t really a good comparison because you don’t have to plug it in though. That’s the beauty. You can’t really slap this thing either. Honestly, i’d rather have a good handpan.
You are entitled to your opinion, though i believe you missed the point. Some prefer playing a good set of spoons. Different strokes. Different folks. Enjoy your pan.@@christopherpederson1021
Fantastic. As someone who is not a fan of the modern synth overload of options (but has to use them) this is a breath of fresh air. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!
Love it, love it, love it. Vlad is a genius. This review format overlooks the MOST IMPORTANT feature of this instrument: It's meant to be an experience that takes you outside your usual experience and mindset while making music. Dont overanalyze it, just dive in and swim.
Brilliant! Lovely to see you back, Nick. I love my Lyra, which I discovered through your review of it. I would love to grab this one, but it’s a bit rich for my blood at the moment. Hope I can at least find one to play with one day.
Tell me you've never had long hair without telling me... What a brilliant instrument. I wonder if I'd have the openness to really explore it properly. I feel like I'd need to unlearn a lot of habits.
Although not a keyboard player, this is perfect for me , because I’m a sound person ,and guitarist…but i have a Memory Moog and thats another thing i know where all the sounds i can get which the Terra does have the upper echelon of sounds like Moog . . I love the vibrato shaking your finger over the touch (notes) and the Terra basically being a modern touch control without a screen…a screen would be a huge plus , hmmm . I would absolutely love to be able to save the exact Arpeggio and settings or sounds but haven’t figured out if that’s possible?.
On the one hand, this seems pretty cool and can go into some new territory. On the other hand, it seems to try very hard to make familiar territory difficult or impossible to reach. Would like to see the engine in a somewhat more traditional form factor with more modern amenities. For example, this engine could go into something like a Microfreak.
Why? That’s 100% not the designer’s intention. Just buy a Microfreak. Or buy this and MIDI it up to something else. I swear, people are *trying* to be obtuse sometimes.
@@sub-jec-tiv Because it'd be a lot easier to get stuff done with it if it had a screen and keys and less wood with more intuitive controls. It seems to have a great engine inside, but it's held back by the interface.
@@ToyKeeperyeah I wish it had a screen and normal keys and normal oscs and a ladder filter and standard envelopes and a black plastic chassis. Maybe version 2…
Where are inexpensive innovative DIY woodworking and/or 3D printed modern controllers using wireless MIDI 2 / MPE? And have space inside for the option to stick in a synth board.
Thanks. What about more 'analogic' sound to modulate to ? I mean known sounds like acoustic instrument sounds for example, modifying by this machine with our own finger and creativity, possible ?
It's neat, but it seems like it would take a long time to learn it. Not having a screen means you'd have to memorize all the presets plus all the variations. PS: those little black spiral things are ponytail holders.
I thought so, too, but sitting down with it the first time... Terra is very *immediate*. I was off and running without really even having to think about it. 😀
@@annother3350 They said the guitar was so unintuitive that a professional reviewer would need to keep the instruction manual open? I don't remember that. Do you have a reference?

The Ring Thing by Electro-Harmonix is a great pedal for synths. 👍

Ummm it kinda is the rack.
That's the good thing about wood, just drill holes, screw on some perforated plates and you're ready to go 😄

Hans Zimmer used to sit on his hands before playing so it wouldn't just the same stuff.

Has there ever been an instrument that Is more Gaz Williams than this thing? Needs a Gaz review. It will blow his mind (and ours) 😮😮
Very cool. The least "Midi" synth ever! Some truly great sounds, new and old, from this unit. Future classic status guaranteed!
