"Get back on the music" could be a merch sticker? How on earth do you keep the multiple projects organized? - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Yeh for sure I'm interested in Dogs! Recycling! Free shit! and whatever the others were. I wish I could patronise all my favourite creators but I could do with some patrons myself at the moment
So true, that's actually exactly why I chose that name, in an attempt to not pigeonhole myself, but then I end up doing mostly sewing videos, because that's what does the best on the channel 🙈!! Thank you 💙
Yup - this would be great: perfect crossover of two funky areas of your world! E.g. favourite / most hated costumes ever and why; examples of circus-specific sewing tricks (i.e. the things you mention here, but with some visuals of what they look like in practice); who else makes circus outfits? (are there professional companies that do this, or do venues have their own costumers, or do the majority of your colleagues make their own?); have circus colleagues asked you to make costumes for them?; have you ever considered this as an additional income generator (if not, why not?); how much do performers get to choose their own costumes vs. how much is pre-determined by the requirements of an overall 'look' of a production? etc. Idle curiosity on my part, but super interesting! ❤
@@BeMoreBarnaby ooh, hadn't event hough of the best/worst costumes aware (boy howdy do I have some bad costumes in my past, not by my own choice)!! Great ideas, love them, thank you and keep them coming!!
"Being good at someting isn't about never making mistakes, it's about picking back up and figuring out how to keep going." Yes! Well said! Congratulations on 40k 🎉
Many years ago when I worked as the sewing room supervisor for a major lingerie manufacturer, I would sometimes complain about having to rip something out to redo it. One of our pattern makers would always remind me "As ye sew, so shall ye rip!" It was a lighthearted reminder that mistakes happen and the world won't end.
The two moments that got me hooked on your adventures were 1. The circus test of a corset 2. The comment about the people you got scraps from for your hobbit coat (the whole thing was fascinating but the community/life thing was it) Your videos make you seem quirky, relatable and unique. I will say your work life balance is intriguing... Especially because you have to add the third job...just staying physically fit
I don't think Shannon is quirky I think she is very normal. People think I am a bit excentric or hippyish. I think history bounding is romantic. Maybe it became popular because we need more romance in our lives. ❤
I love your content, you have a bit of a kind of mad inventor vibe, in the most positive possible way! Like you experiment and investigate and its so so creative, it's refreshingly different from similar creators.
Part 2 would be great, I started sewing at age 12. I took apart old clothes to make new clothes because we were rather low-income. I am now almost 65 and love seeing you sew with such fearlessness. I was always afraid to make a mistake.
Same for me. Started sewing as about 12 because I wanted to have more clothes, and it really did cost less to sew. Fast fashion broke me about two years ago, hated all the clothes that didn't come from the Thrift store. So, at 69, I've picked it back up, and, Shannon has been a major inspiration. And, FINALLY, my clothes actually fit.
I love the idea of interviews around circus costumes! That would be amazing. I would also love in-depth discussions of the costumes you have made or wore before and how they are made and why. That is fascinating and has implications outside of circus costumes, I think.
Absolutely agree with your point on historical sewing. I love watching the content and keep thinking of what I would like to make - a medieval kirtle? A Victorian ball gown? - but I keep arriving at the conclusion that I want to sew clothes I can wear in my daily life. We can still learn from history, things like techniques or style ideas or how to wear and treat clothes in general :)
I would absolutely love a part 2! Also, I absolutely love your channel. I love that you mix things up, show your mistakes and how you rectify them. Absolutely love all the ideas that you put out and the ones you settle on. Whether it's sewing, circus, knitting, history bounding, Canale, dumpster diving, fabric shopping, it's all a definite tune in for me. Interestingly I am 64 and absolutely can't wait to see what's on your channel, you are a huge inspiration to me. Keep it going. Also, I absolutely loved that blouse in this video, did you make it?
Wow, so glad that you're love the videos, that's super rewarding and satisfying to hear 💙💜💙 And yes, I did make the blouse, and it might feature (in small part, at least) in an upcoming video... I really needed some sleeveless shirts for the summer, because I rarely wear sleeves in full-out summer heat, so I made it (but ironically made it during a several-day-long power outage due to freezing rain/ice storm 🥶🤣)
It always impresses me so much that you manage a job as a professional free-lance performer on top of your UA-cam content. Those are two really hustle-heavy jobs. Also, as someone who loves sewing but is chronically ill and also on a very tight budget, I always appreciate how mindful of expense you are and also that you make things that can be easily worn day-to-day. This kind of practical yet historically themed sewing is such and inspiration to me and it's also a relief. I love watching people sew full 19th cent ball gowns, but there is no way I can afford either the money or the effort it would take to make something that involved, especially as I would never wear it. Because of this, if the only content I see is like that it can feel isolating and very frustrating. So, I hugely appreciate the makers who focus on the potentially less flashy but more practical projects. I not only enjoy your content, but videos like yours also help me to feel OK watching the big-budget makers as well because I no longer feel excluded, just that I am choosing to focus my energy on other equally valuable things. (Also, I would love to see a Part 2, fyi :-) )
Why thank you, I'm glad that you feel like you can connect with my content in a different way than with other creators, and that it helps you to enjoy the fancier content! (I admit, part of me was like, "dang, well I want to be a big budget maker too" but also, let's be honest, while I could technically afford the fancier stuff, I probably wouldn't feel good using it for a frivolous costume😭😭) I would love to occasionally do bigger, fancier projects --maybe not entire ball gowns, but you know, something more than a blouse and vest-- but they'll most likely be very few and far-between the more practical makes
@@ShannonMakes Oh, for sure. I remember you saying you were looking into Victorian tailoring technique and that would definitely require significantly more than a $20 budget (and I'm very keen to see where that goes, it sounds like fun). But seeing fun makes that use only a couple of meters of affordable fabric is also really nice - and so much of your content is like this so far. So, thank you!
this is an awesome video, a week in your life video would be quite interesting, interviews with people on what performance wear needs would be very interesting and could be of beneficial to individuals who may wish to wanting to get into that niche. of course, pooch content is always a bonus
Have you thought about “historical” circus clothing? In terms of something you could perhaps actually use but would also have a vintage/historical vibe?
I would definitely like to make some historical circus clothing, and it's on the list for sure, but it's a bit lower on the list because unfortunately I would never actually use it, as it's quite impractical for our actual performances 😢 Have started looking into it and examining extant examples where I can find them though!
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You inspired me to try sewing clothes for myself again!!! I knit, crochet, patchwork and quilt AND I dipped my toes into historical costuming, so your content makes me soooooo happy ❤
Shannon, the thing you bring to the UA-cam experience that NO other sewist has, is your circus work. I get being anxious about spending time on a product that doesn't make views/money, but it feels like it would be smart to take advantage of the thing that makes you utterly unique among UA-cam sewists. You really do bring something great to the table, so capitalize on that, both economically and creatively.
Makes sense, and it does seem like it'd make me stand out, but at the same time, if no one comes for the circus content, it's still a time sink (I say, having had friends start circus YT channels only to see them bomb). There's surely a way to integrate it, but needs to be well thought out, I feel!
This was a delight! I really appreciate hearing your insights and learning more about the things that drive you. I love listening to people talk about the things they're passionate about - it fuels my own motivation to make things and inspires me to keep moving forward! A part two would be most welcome ^_^ Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself with all of us, and congrats on 40k subscribers!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed listening, and hearing that it helps fuel your own motivation is fantastic! Love that!! Thank YOU for watching and commenting 🫶
8:42 I don't feel for vlogs or a-day-in-the-life type of content, because I'm not interested in your private life =) And I say that out of respect and care for you. I don't think it's so good to show too much of one's life online, for mental health reasons if anything, and although I'm interested in a circus artist's and sewist's life per se, I'm mostly here for the nerdy sewing recycled fabrics content with honest commentary and cosy editing. Loving your honesty about mistakes ! They are PART OF SUCCESS, not the opposite of it ! More people need to hear this ! I'm a performing artist too (musician) and yes, it's really not about not messing up. I know I WILL mess up, no matter how much I prepare beforehand. It's all about how one deals with the mistake, how one handles the mess ^^ 32:41 Damnnn I feel that one ^^ "My life is chaos and everytime I [...] try to plan out a content calendar is goes to crap." Yep, yep exactly !
I think it is fascinating to se bits of life from other peoples perspective. The crafting content is *chef's kiss* and it is what made me click on that first video, but what you chose to share from your day to day life is very ~exotic~ 😄to an inveterate homebody like myself. I also started sewing because of want of a garment, much later in life but still. I was taught the very basics at school, but did not do anything else until I really wanted a nice skirt that actually fit me. And your sewing learning seems exactly like mine to be honest, the internet is a sewing library rigth at our fingertips! On another note ..two full time jobs seems like a recipe for burnout in the long run. Take it from someone that is still working on getting over burnout 5 YEARS after the initial crash. It is really not worth it, at all. The medical community know very little about how to fix the damage caused by chronic stress, the approach is 'get plenty of rest and pray that your brain and body is capable of reparing themselves'. I crashed pretty damned badly for little to no real gain, and now I can't really help but want to warn others about how serious effects burnout migth actually have. It is brain damage. If you are lucky, your brain heals to full fuctionality. If you are unlucky your brain has taken permanent damage. Avoid at all(most) costs.
😹😹I have been sewing since I was around 7-8 years old, I am now 60 years old, I still make mistakes, some of them so basic you end up slapping your face🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♀️ 😹😹anyone who says they don’t have mistakes are not learning. Lol like you have spent my whole life learning many different crafts, I have thus burning need to always be busy.
Well, from the list of places you've travelled to for work I just realized that I may have already seen you in person 🥳 You're such an interesting person, thank you for letting us get to know you a bit more! Part 2? yes, please! Video on vintage patterns? Also yes, please!
I google everything and watch UA-cam tutorials ALL THE TIME. It's how I learn nearly everything craft-wise. I am a much more accomplished knitter than sewist, and even with a great deal of experience, I STILL google and watch videos about complex knitting techniques that I don't use on a regular basis. I found you through looking for "how to do" something sew-y! (I found your Hobbit Housecoat and OMG I totally want to make one..... ) I LOVE that you include mistakes. I'm all about learning from my own mistakes; in fact, being able to stay calm and patient and work THROUGH a mistake is a part of the reason I love craft - it is an excellent skill to cultivate - so it's very much about the PROCESS for me, although I love wearing/using my finished creations. BTW, I was an English major too!
Love all of this ⬆️ and relate to much of it (well, I'm a better sewist than knitter, but other than that, YESSS YES YES)! Definitely encourage you to try the hobbit housecoat, it's absolutely worth the effort, and a great use for scraps! And hey, any mistakes will just be learning processes, as you said!
you absolute star! you are the first person I have ever heard talking so matter of factly about neuro typical privilige and I like you even more for it.
Thank you, very glad it resonated with you. I think it's something that many people (mainly those who ARE neurotypical) overlook, or forget about, or aren't even aware of in the first place 😢
I just thought of this when you described learning to sew expertly. As a computer programmer that worked for cognitive psychologists most of my career, I can tell you that brain research shows that error learning is the strongest type. Making the error, fixing it, understanding how/why you made it and how to correct the error encodes the information into your brain more strongly. So you learn better when you make your mistakes and correct them. It’s a good way to learn to sew. I’m trying to learn pattern making and alterations. I have “made” my own patterns for some things by combining features of other patterns but I have not yet drafted a pattern on my own. I am also trying to learn to make alterations. I can muddle my way through getting the changes made but I definitely can’t teach it to someone else. I usually end up making alterations in high stakes garments for friends and family, generally for weddings (not for brides). It’s always a bit worrisome but so far it has all worked out. I enjoy your content. I admire your skills at a young age working with 4-way stretch. I still try to avoid those fabrics. I’m looking forward to more of your videos.
That's such an interesting point, and makes total sense. Also applies very much so with physical learning too - try to ride a bike or a unicycle, and literally the only way to learn is to make a ZILLION mistakes, fall off a TON of times, until your body starts to understand how to control the movement in a way that keeps you on the vehicle longer and longer!!
I especially love to watch you sewing, designing, dumpster diving, gathering materials from the sidewalk and woodworking. You are so creative and inspirational. You make me want to do more. I'm limited because I have a bad back. God bless you my dear friend. 😊❤❤
Thank you 😊💚 Don't worry, I think that many people aren't fully aware just how long it takes to get a video together (any aspect of it, from planning/scripting to filming to editing)... I think we consume YT without necessarily realizing how much goes into it --myself included, I'm not just pointing fingers at others here!!
Shannon “it’s a lot to juggle”. Also Shannon, “Hold my beer, I’m about to get even busier and take on a HUGE new project” 😅 You are a work horse! I love the house episodes and look forward to them every week.
I truly love watching your videos! I adore that you show mistakes, humour, frustration, all of it. I love sewing and also struggle with mistakes, seeing that others do as well makes it all the more approachable. Realism! Also, all the circus! Anytime
Would love a part 2. This one gave me lots of ideas, going to roll three of your topics into me googling the difference between historical costuming and history-bounding to start 😊
Please make a part two! This was really awesome to listen too while working on a project. I have two questions to ask for you to perhaps ask your friends and colleagues. First, would you mind asking them to also share their stories about how they also got into the various acts and circus stuff? And second, is there like an age or perhaps some other factors that start to lessen your ability to continue working as an acrobatic/athletic performer that might be different than say other athletes or performers? I also was wondering if you could share more about your “make journal” you mentioned and maybe show some of it and what exactly it all entails? It was just really intriguing when you mentioned it in one of your other videos where you made the new vest using the tightest and smallest budget possible? It just sounds like a really cool idea, and being a maker myself I feel like I might want to try something similar because it seems like it would be really cool to document all the various different things I make or do. But I am curious about what all you include in such an item. And if you want to make a second video like this I would happily watch it, I always find it interesting and really awesome to kind of get to know the person behind the lense beyond the bit they share while making or doing whatever they are doing in the video at that moment. Thanks for sharing so much!
I'd like to see more circus content, and also more of your story with Phil and videos of the interactions between the two. I always find it interesting when we can see content creators interact with others. I really like how you explained about making mistakes and self-training. I think this is so important in life in general. I spent a lot of time with my paternal grandmother who said it was important for young men to know how to cook, sew, crafts, etc. It turned out true as my wife was not particularly good at these things (and didn't enjoy them), so I was able to take up the slack in those areas. Thanks!
Shannon, a part two would be wonderful. The thing is, I came here to see your sewing content, but return for each new video because you are so candid about yourself and your process. We, out here in watching UA-cam land, begin to feel that we know you and that you are a friend. Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
I found you only recently due to your newest challenge: The House! Old architecture and trying to maintain or rehab said old architecture, especially when you do your best to be environmentally responsible is very interesting to me.
I think the fact that you have so many varied interests and so many activities that you do in a day shows. Since you've described that you do have quite a wildly varying day every day it kind of explains why your videos are varied. I like the fact that one will be about circus and one will be about the dog and one will be about arranging a space and one will be about sewing. As varied as your life is, so are your youtube offerings. I like them all, I like them mixed, I like them when they're only about one thing. Keep on doing what you're doing and keep us guessing. It never occurred to me that this show was about sewing only after "meeting" you.
With regards to interviewing friends and their experiences, you could see if Phil (sorry if this is spelled incorrectly) would be willing to go through a few things and maybe where mens' and womens' costumes need to differ depending on the performance?
You are so much fun to watch and listen to! I absolutely would love a part 2 and regular circus videos as well. I hope you have a wonderful day and get a lot of positiv feedback
Congrats for hitting 40k, I like your videos no matter what they're about, to the point where when I see there's a new one it jumps the long queue of stuff I wanna watch when I have some time to myself. "Up until I'm fed and watered" Aaah, horse barn lingo right there :) I did gymnastics as a kid but I'm not sure why I didn't continue with it, probably parents didn't want to drive me there (we lived out of town), also did cartwheels and stilts and pogo sticks and all kinds of things kids aren't allowed to do in playrounds once I took the swings off the swingset A frame... started riding at 12, took up Aikido at 25, medieval armour and combat in my 30s, started learning some ballet in my 40s, learned how to do a handstand at 45 when another friend got into gymnastics very late (in his 30s). I still do all of it (not so often with the stilts but I did get on them in full plate armour a few years ago, still got it), just slower and more carefully these days cause I do physical labour for my chaotic day job and literally can't afford to get seriously injured. Hehe, a week in the life of yours sounds as chaotic as mine, yay for irregular schedules. I'd be interested in seeing your physical training stuff so I can live vicariously through you since I'm way too broken to do it myself these days! :) Started "sewing" as a kid trying to make doll clothes, refined it a bit to make stuff badly for my pony in my teens and twenties (she was hell on winter blankets so there was always a lot to repair too, and my barn also did a costume contest every year), started making my own stuff mostly adequately (I've made several Hakamas for martial arts) and am now refining that to make things for myself less badly! I used a lot of stretched crushed velvet in my early sewing, it's pretty forgiving. Love the idea of hearing about costuming requirements and how you accomplish it without compromising the look or the structure. Making (and fixing) mistakes is learning. I have found this to be accurate to all crafts and trades I've taken up, though the consequences of making mistakes with fabric are generally less risky than the consequences of making a mistake in martial arts (though it's my Sensei who tells us, "Make mistakes! Make big, glorious mistakes!"). I try to judge my sewing and armour mistakes by "can I live with this or does it have to be corrected/redone" and try to be gentle with myself in that it's not a waste of materials if I have to redo something, it's a learning experience that had a cost. I also now know where I make the mistakes and what steps to take to not do it again. And I totally hear you on the "brain doesn't like to justify costuming because reasons", same here. I have too much stuff in my house already and cannot justify making something I'll wear once or twice, I need stuff to be part of my wardrobe (exception for the medieval costuming I need to get more done on so I've got stuff to wear during events when I'm not armoured).
"when I see there's a new one it jumps the long queue of stuff I wanna watch" wow, that's literally #goals as a YT creator, it honestly warms my heart so much to hear it! I don't have time to respond to all of your thoughts on the comment (sorry, I just have a zillion amazing comments on this video, and I like to get to each one if possible), but thank you so much for sharing, I love reading all of it, and I love the "Make mistakes! Make big, glorious mistakes!" part!!
I would absolutely love to see a week in the life video. I was part of the Kansas City Juggling Club for a while and got to hang out with some circus performers who were really cool, and I love sewing and almost any kind of DIY, and I love animals too, so your varied interests all interest me. Turns out I don't have the coordination necessary for juggling or contact juggling, and my physical health is too poor for the more athletic of your pursuits, but living vicariously is great!
Yes to part 2, please. I was really into this and not ready for it to end. Also, your comment about maybe selling your historical costumes made me think that if you had UA-cam merch, that would be the coolest merch ever. But it would probably be more lucrative to auction them.
"the coolest merch ever" lol... unfortunately I'm not sure that selling my previous Makes falls into the category of merch, or at least not the typical one, but hey... since when have I ever done anything typical 🤣🤣
I don't know how I happened upon your channel, but have been binge watching it for two days now. I started at the house refurbishing and have been working my way backward. I love all of your content and creativity. I'm also a sewer, scavenger, thrifter and home refurbished along with many other talents. (No gymnastics though.) You keep making videos and I'll keep watching.
I would definitely like to see the part 2 video. I originally came to your channel to see the sewing content. However I continue to watch because I enjoy your cheerful presentation.
I am only 1 minute into the video, but would just like to agree that yes, a separate video about your sewing patterns would interest me very, very much! I never sew with vintage patterns and I am curious to see what they look like and what you like about them / how you use them.
I learned so much! Thank you for doing this. It may not get as much traction as some of your crafty videos, but there's a good group of us that appreciate it. ❤
Love this deep dive! Idea: you could integrate some of your physical circus training into sewing project videos - i.e. for helping to segway from one part of the project to another.
@@ShannonMakes You said montages are more than a bit complex to create - maybe you could create some personal "stock" montages of different types of workouts you do - and potential corgi activities - and then insert them into videos as a bridge from one thing to another with potential to reuse entire or partial segments.
I would like a part 2, I'm especially curious to see what you have to say about the recycling/finding/dumpster diving side of things! Also DIY stuff. I'm very much a beginning sewer (much more experienced knitter), and I haven't done much with power tools, but I want to learn to make all the things, and I would love some insight on how to get cheap/free materials without just getting discouraged/cluttering your home up with not-actually-useful materials.
Thank you, there will probably be a part coming coming along eventually in the next few weeks! Don't know that I did a great job of answering any of those questions in the previous filming sesh, but if I have time, I'll try to get to them for round 2!
I'm still catching up with your older videos. I really like all the different things you do. I have been wondering about the circus side of your activities. It seems like you have boundless energy and I am impressed with how you throw yourself into every project. Your Corgi is a cutie. Your thrifty nature falls right in with mine. I was raised on a farm and you had to watch every expenditure plus be very observant of your animals and crops. So I look forward to all your adventures.
Loved the bit where you got to the How Did You Get So Good?! section and the answer was literally just "This is skill built of a hundred screwups!" Also learning from google and UA-cam. I grew up with my mum sewing all our clothes, but she died when I was very young and then we were sent to our grandmother - who also sewed, but was a terrible person. So I either forgot everything mum taught me, or repressed the hell out of it because [[woo! unpaid child labour in my grandmother's uniform shop!]] ... reasons. And then a few years ago, I just got so, so sick of the horrible fast fashion crap I could afford and taught myself to sew again through a combination of fuckups and youtube lol It's a good feeling, having clothes I actually like and it feels like something my mum would have approved of :D Also, I've had a playlist of your videos running in the background while I was working on a coquelicot skirt, so thank you for the company :D And best wishes with the house! Ended up listening to those all out of order, alas, but it's a lovely old place, and from what I've seen you've got the determination to work through its challenges :)
Your grandma’s machine! Looks like the 301a slant needle i got as a graduation gift in 1976. Mom had a black one from 1952 For her own graduation. No zigzag but it never jams!
I really love your videos Shannon, thank you so much for doing what you do. I've been sewing since I was 11 and it's the one thing I always wish I made more time to do- thank you for being an inspiration to keep creating thriftfully! xx
I'd watch any thing you post. I personally like longer videos. I don't care about lighting or perfect angles. I'll watch sewing, circus, day/ week in the life. ❤ I've only found you foods a few weeks but i love your content.
True, that definitely helps, but there are so many good YT tutorials out there that I honestly believe that even if you're garbage at geometry, you can work it out. It just might take a few tutorials to find the one that speaks to you
Very interested in the specifics of costuming for circus and your idea of interviewing friends in other circus disciplines. I think this would make a fascinating series.
I would love a part 2! Anytime you want to put it up I will be there for it. I really enjoy all your videos and all your makes. No matter what material you are using. I’m always amazed at the things you can make from stuff found on the side of the road! You are really skilled!! Keep up the great work and congratulations on 40k. Oh and I’m glad that you don’t mind us having conversations in your comments section. It seems I run into the same people and am enjoying the conversations!
Huge Yes to being happy with conversations that go on around here. Thanks and congrats on the milestone! Yes to a part 2. Hey Robin, hope you're doing well at the beginning of the weekend. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@@stevezytveld6585 hey Cathy. I’m doing pretty good. Weather is sunny, the hot water tank has been replaced and I have a new washer! Of course that means I have to get caught up but it’s so much easier! With all the clearing and cleaning up for deliveries I’ve had a chance to go through things. Four small boxes are at the door and more to come!
@@robintheparttimesewer6798 That's fantastic for the new washer and the hot water tank. No Covid delays - huzzah. And the cleaning is amazing. Cheering for you! I had a bit of a flame out this past weekend. I'm on the patch to cut down and eventually cut out my smoking. Unfortunately I somehow missed the crucial bit of information. You take the patch off while you sleep. I think I'm somewhere along week three or four... so I've been overdosing on nicotine for the last little bit. Apparently explains the nightmares. And the sleeping patterns. And at least some of the mood stuff. I believe the kids still say - "I can't even...". How absolutely ridiculous of me. I just assumed they were a 24 hour release thang. Meh. Today was about getting back on schedule. Garden's not going to plant itself. It's such a difference when there's sunlight...
@@stevezytveld6585 oh no that sounds rough! I hate when things muck up my sleep and I have enough weird dreams without help! I cheated when I quit smoking got sick and couldn’t breathe and smoke. It’s been since Nov but I still can taste them. Not sure if the want goes away but the lack of smokers cough is very nice! That said I really can’t recommend it as an option to quit it was horrid! 0/10 can not recommend!! My sleep has been rough too no weird dreams just not really restful. Which throws me into a loop. Takes hours to get moving feel guilty for being so slow and tired so at the end of the day I’m still pushing for more. This of course drops my productivity cause I’m tired and moving slowly! I know this but I’m on UA-cam at midnight instead of bed! Sadly there’s still stuff out of place. 99 times out of a hundred the basement stairs landing is a great place for a pantry shelf. It’s washed and back now. Just a few more things to go back. I really have to start loading things up and getting them out. I keep thinking that I can wait and do it all at once. There are three thrift shops near me. Like all less than 10 kilks. I don’t need to think of this as a big excursion. It would also help if the family helped! Don’t worry about the less than productive times. The biggest thing is that we keep at it. We only lose if we stop trying! Try to keep positive and take some time for fun stuff! Oh forgot to tell you I had to talk my poor daughter down this weekend. She wants pants eventually gave up at stores and started looking at patterns. Poor baby was looking at the big 4!! I wish she called me first! Some of her measurements weren’t on the charts. She was so upset. She has a perfectly corseted figure without the corset and a 14 inch difference from her waist to her hips! Fortunately we found something on mood fabrics, which I now have to in my spare time, download and print. She’s going to sulk when she finds out the grandson is first! Though the big question might be if I jump the que make myself something first!
I feel the same way about making something completely historical when I cannot wear it more often. I am working on figuring out history bounding for mr. 😊
I am wearing my bernadette banner pirate shirt rn, perfect for lounging and nightwear. Tho it is annoying to need to change my shirt if I suddenly de ide to go out. And I'll wear it to a medieval fair in a few months
Yea, I think the impracticality of the completely historical is just a big hurdle that many of us face, like: do we really want to spend our time, energy and money on something we might wear once or twice, maybe with friends, but maybe even not. Maybe just alone in a backyard for a few photos? I dunno, I'll enjoy it here and there, but not as the main focus of the channel!
I would like to see your vintage pattern collection. I would like a part two and I enjoy the history bounding, and whatever else you decide to conquer. I would like to know how long you and your performing partner have been working together? Did you just meet around the circus community and decide you would make a great act, or were you teamed up by a coach? Do you see yourself teaching other performers once you decide not to be a performer any longer?
Having spent the better part of my late teens and early 20s coaching to pay my way through life, I can definitively say that I do not like coaching 😢 I can be quite good at it, but I do not enjoy it, so I don't think that will be in my future!
I work in theater tech, and part of the magic of a live performance (for me) is the mistakes. There are plenty of shows I've done that I barely recall now, but I'm never going to forget the performance that one of the actors had to keep running off stage to be sick, or the time when an actor hung up the phone on set, only to have it fall off the wall.
Or that time when Phil came on-stage shirtless because he mis-interpreted his cues, and didn't have time to put it on, and we did the act with a very, very sweaty partner 🤣🤣
Loving all your content!! It's all up my alley. I crochet, sew, do remodeling, woodworking, recycle, upcycle and love old homes. Love the circus content too! Loved seeing you perform! It's amazing!!!
IF YOU WANT to see Part 2, and you still have questions you'd like answered, throw them below 💙💜💚💛
"Get back on the music" could be a merch sticker?
How on earth do you keep the multiple projects organized?

@@stevezytveld6585 LOVE IT!!
Would love to see part 2!!
Absolutely interested in a Part 2!
Yeh for sure I'm interested in Dogs! Recycling! Free shit! and whatever the others were. I wish I could patronise all my favourite creators but I could do with some patrons myself at the moment
You’re Shannon *Makes,* not Shannon *Sews,* so don’t feel restricted to only making sewing content.
So true, that's actually exactly why I chose that name, in an attempt to not pigeonhole myself, but then I end up doing mostly sewing videos, because that's what does the best on the channel 🙈!! Thank you 💙
Totally agree!
Make, make, make! Whatever your heart desires because it is all interesting and I love those kinds of videos!
I LIKE listening to you ramble on. 😄 So yes, please, to part 2. Don't leave us hanging.
Shannon , I would be so excited to have this extra content!
I would love interviews with your circus friends and their outfits!
Thank you, noted!! 💙🎪💛
@@BeMoreBarnaby I'd watch that!
Totally agree!
"Being good at someting isn't about never making mistakes, it's about picking back up and figuring out how to keep going." Yes! Well said! Congratulations on 40k 🎉
Thank you! And thank you!!
@@ShannonMakes I call these learning experiences, not mistakes. Sometimes, a "mistake" turns out to be cool, then, I call it "serendipity".
The two moments that got me hooked on your adventures were
1. The circus test of a corset
2. The comment about the people you got scraps from for your hobbit coat (the whole thing was fascinating but the community/life thing was it)
Your videos make you seem quirky, relatable and unique.
I will say your work life balance is intriguing... Especially because you have to add the third job...just staying physically fit
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying the content, thank you for watching and being intrigued!!
Like you experiment and investigate and its so so creative, it's refreshingly different from similar creators.
awww, why thank you for the lovely comment... I love the mad inventor vibe, that's fantastic!! 🫶
I agree!😍🤓💪
Part 2 would be great, I started sewing at age 12. I took apart old clothes to make new clothes because we were rather low-income. I am now almost 65 and love seeing you sew with such fearlessness. I was always afraid to make a mistake.
Aww, thank you, so glad you're enjoying the content and the fearlessness!
Fearless is the perfect description!
Bring on the Circus 🎪 Bring on the monkeys 🐒 🙈 🙊 Bring on the sewing, the DIYing, the house renovations! So here for it all!!! 🎉🎉🎉
🥳🥳🥳
I would love to see more of the circus aspect of your life, travel, costumes, and performing with Phil ect…
I love the idea of interviews around circus costumes! That would be amazing.
I would also love in-depth discussions of the costumes you have made or wore before and how they are made and why. That is fascinating and has implications outside of circus costumes, I think.
Thank you, noted! 🫶
Yessss, 1000%!!
Well, for me a medieval kirtle, if a bit shortened and short-sleeved, since I live in the Tropics, would be a perfectly usable daily dress.
I would love to know more about how you adapt patterns to make them work for circus performances xx
Thank you, noted! ❤️🎪💛
YES!
(I admit, part of me was like, "dang, well I want to be a big budget maker too" but also, let's be honest, while I could technically afford the fancier stuff, I probably wouldn't feel good using it for a frivolous costume😭😭)
I would love to occasionally do bigger, fancier projects --maybe not entire ball gowns, but you know, something more than a blouse and vest-- but they'll most likely be very few and far-between the more practical makes
Crowd chants ::vintage patterns! vintage patterns!::
lol thank you!!
this is an awesome video, a week in your life video would be quite interesting, interviews with people on what performance wear needs would be very interesting and could be of beneficial to individuals who may wish to wanting to get into that niche. of course, pooch content is always a bonus
Thank you! Love hearing what interests you, and taking notes on everyone's opinions! Pooch content IS always a bonus, gotta love the pupper! 🐶
Oooh, that's a very fun mix of fiber crafts you've got going on, no wonder you like my videos!! Thank you so much for watching
You are just a joy to watch. I'll watch whatever video you choose to do. Love the Nova Scotia house. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Thank you!
Wait, you're not a space pirate?
No, sorry. Just an internet cowboy 🤠
@@ShannonMakes "keyboard cowboy, cyber samurai" - Hackers movie.
I'd like to see more of you making mistakes and working around them in different ways.
It's all about how one deals with the mistake, how one handles the mess ^^
32:41 Damnnn I feel that one ^^ "My life is chaos and everytime I [...] try to plan out a content calendar is goes to crap." Yep, yep exactly !
Avoid at all(most) costs.
aww, thank you! glad you enjoyed it, and that you keep coming back to other videos that are slightly less *crafting content*
I love the circus vids too
😹😹I have been sewing since I was around 7-8 years old, I am now 60 years old, I still make mistakes, some of them so basic you end up slapping your face🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♀️ 😹😹anyone who says they don’t have mistakes are not learning.
Lol like you have spent my whole life learning many different crafts, I have thus burning need to always be busy.
The only way to never make mistakes is to never try anything new.
Yeah, hitting ones head over sewing left to right or something 😅😂
Would love an occassional Day in the Life vlog style even without a routine!
Aww, thank you! It's noted!
I would love to see your vintage pattern collection!!
thank you 😍😍
Well, from the list of places you've travelled to for work I just realized that I may have already seen you in person 🥳
You're such an interesting person, thank you for letting us get to know you a bit more!
Part 2? yes, please! Video on vintage patterns? Also yes, please!
Thank you, noted! 💙🎪💛
❤❤❤ thanks!! So interesting. Part 2 would be great.
You're most welcome! 😊
Yes, it is amazing you can make your own costumes. Home made ones. Can be wonderful because you can add features you could never buy.
you absolute star! you are the first person I have ever heard talking so matter of factly about neuro typical privilige and I like you even more for it.
I am here for all the circus. Don't be afraid to include it.
Thank you!! 🫶🎪
I would love to see your act. Circus is fascinating because it's a more unusual skill, looks darling and dangerous.😮❤
I especially love to watch you sewing, designing, dumpster diving, gathering materials from the sidewalk and woodworking. You are so creative and inspirational. You make me want to do more. I'm limited because I have a bad back. God bless you my dear friend. 😊❤❤
Thank you, Connie, and so glad you liked the video! Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you for sharing your story. It is very interesting and left me wanting to know more. I think you are amazing with all of your energy and talent.
You are so welcome!
Wow I had no idea that editing takes that long! I have far more appreciation for your lovely videos now.❤
Thank you 😊💚 Don't worry, I think that many people aren't fully aware just how long it takes to get a video together (any aspect of it, from planning/scripting to filming to editing)... I think we consume YT without necessarily realizing how much goes into it --myself included, I'm not just pointing fingers at others here!!
Love to see more circus.
Do check out the Vlogmas series (it's really not *that* holiday themed, I promise) for many episodes of circus!
Shannon “it’s a lot to juggle”. Also Shannon, “Hold my beer, I’m about to get even busier and take on a HUGE new project” 😅 You are a work horse! I love the house episodes and look forward to them every week.
How about a day or week in the life of your pup? I love the look into someone else’s life! Yours is very FUN!
Being a good sewist means knowing how to keep trying to fix the mistake. Also a good sewist NEVER points out the mistakes.❤ enjoy your content.
LOL yea, true... although I'd extend that to say that a good *person* never points out the mistakes. Don't have to be a sewist to not be a dick 🤣🤣
I truly love watching your videos! I adore that you show mistakes, humour, frustration, all of it. I love sewing and also struggle with mistakes, seeing that others do as well makes it all the more approachable. Realism! Also, all the circus! Anytime
Thank you!! So glad you're vibing with the channel, honestly sewing is such a rollercoaster, just gotta embrace the whole process 🤣🫶
Would love a part 2. This one gave me lots of ideas, going to roll three of your topics into me googling the difference between historical costuming and history-bounding to start 😊
Oooh, nice, that's a great start! Glad you're enjoying the videos --even the less purely crafting ones-- and thanks for watching!!
Thankyou Shannon and Phil, realy enjoying your videos, your both so multie talented, good luck to yous,xx😊
Thank you!! 🤗
You have an outstanding channel!
Thank you 😊
I'd like to see more circus content, and also more of your story with Phil and videos of the interactions between the two. Thanks!
Enjoyed this!!
🥰🥰🥰
Just found you about a week ago and you are so interesting I’m watching often trying to catch up!
Yay! Thank you!
Shannon, a part two would be wonderful. The thing is, I came here to see your sewing content, but return for each new video because you are so candid about yourself and your process. We, out here in watching UA-cam land, begin to feel that we know you and that you are a friend. Thank you for sharing yourself with us!
Thank you 😊😊Thanks for watching!
I love your eclectic life!
Me too!
I have a circus coming to my hometown and I always think of you when I see the ads!
Oh, fun!! Hope you go see it if you're interested!
That's a very interesting and good point, actually, and somehow I had never thought about it like that! Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank YOU for watching, and for your generosity and support! 💙💜
I’d love to see anything circus related and interviews with other performers sounds very interesting. A day or week ‘in the life’ I’d watch too!
With regards to interviewing friends and their experiences, you could see if Phil (sorry if this is spelled incorrectly) would be willing to go through a few things and maybe where mens' and womens' costumes need to differ depending on the performance?
Yea, I could definitely try to talk to him... I don't know if he'd have that many thoughts on it, lol, but I'll probe him 🤣
Would love to see a series about the circus costumes with your friends and colleagues - that sounds fascinating!
Thank you, noted! 💙
Ooooooo vintage sewing patterns❤
You are so much fun to watch and listen to! I absolutely would love a part 2 and regular circus videos as well. I hope you have a wonderful day and get a lot of positiv feedback
Thank you, Runa, for the lovely words and input! Keep your eyes peeled, then, for a potential Part 2!! 💙
Started "sewing" as a kid trying to make doll clothes, refined it a bit to make stuff badly for my pony in my teens and twenties (she was hell on winter blankets so there was always a lot to repair too, and my barn also did a costume contest every year), started making my own stuff mostly adequately (I've made several Hakamas for martial arts) and am now refining that to make things for myself less badly!
I love your channel. Thanks for letting us get to know you better.
You're very welcome, thank YOU for stopping by to listen!
You are very interesting Shannon. Does your dog do tricks?
I would love to learn more about circus costuming!
(No gymnastics though.)
You keep making videos and I'll keep watching.
Amazing! Welcome aboard, so glad you're enjoying the videos 💜💙♥️
I would love to see more circus content. I love the idea of the interviews with other performers about costuming.
Thank you! 💙💜
I vote for the series of interviews with other performers about all the different costumes

I would definitely like to see the part 2 video. I originally came to your channel to see the sewing content. However I continue to watch because I enjoy your cheerful presentation.
Aww, why thank you! So glad you stuck around and that you're enjoying all the various videos!
Ooh definitely make a part 2….. your channel is so very interesting 🎉😊
Thank you! Will do!
Hi Shannon. I would be very interested in your life in a week vlog. And your wave makes me smile. Always be nice and weird at the same time!
Thank you!! 🫶👋
I am only 1 minute into the video, but would just like to agree that yes, a separate video about your sewing patterns would interest me very, very much! I never sew with vintage patterns and I am curious to see what they look like and what you like about them / how you use them.
Thank you, and noted! 🫶💙 (although I will say that I haven't actually used many of them yet, just FYI)
I learned so much! Thank you for doing this. It may not get as much traction as some of your crafty videos, but there's a good group of us that appreciate it. ❤
Aww, thank you!! 🫶🫶
Thank you for the sewing failure tips😂 needed the kick in the proverbial
You are so welcome! 🤣
I appreciate that too
Love this deep dive! Idea: you could integrate some of your physical circus training into sewing project videos - i.e. for helping to segway from one part of the project to another.
I'm not sure if that'd be interesting or jarring to the viewer, but you're the second person to mention it, so I'll marinate on the idea for sure!
@@ShannonMakes You said montages are more than a bit complex to create - maybe you could create some personal "stock" montages of different types of workouts you do - and potential corgi activities - and then insert them into videos as a bridge from one thing to another with potential to reuse entire or partial segments.
I like everything.
🥳🥳🥳
Yes I love sewing, but would love to see what your circus life is all about. Yes to all those costume ideas.
Thank you, and your input is noted! 💙
I came to your channel for the sewing but would love to see behind the scenes of Circus stuff. Seems so interesting!!
Why thank you!!
So I either forgot everything mum taught me, or repressed the hell out of it because [[woo! unpaid child labour in my grandmother's uniform shop!]] ... reasons. And then a few years ago, I just got so, so sick of the horrible fast fashion crap I could afford and taught myself to sew again through a combination of fuckups and youtube lol It's a good feeling, having clothes I actually like and it feels like something my mum would have approved of :D
Also, I've had a playlist of your videos running in the background while I was working on a coquelicot skirt, so thank you for the company :D And best wishes with the house!
I like to watch you sew with the end result. Also like watching you knit.
I really love your videos Shannon, thank you so much for doing what you do. I've been sewing since I was 11 and it's the one thing I always wish I made more time to do- thank you for being an inspiration to keep creating thriftfully! xx
You're very welcome, so glad to hear that you're enjoying the videos!!💙
I'd watch any thing you post. I personally like longer videos. I don't care about lighting or perfect angles. I'll watch sewing, circus, day/ week in the life. ❤ I've only found you foods a few weeks but i love your content.
Thank you 🥰♥️
When making adjustments to patterns it helps if you have a mind that sees in shapes. It’s really geometry.
True, that definitely helps, but there are so many good YT tutorials out there that I honestly believe that even if you're garbage at geometry, you can work it out. It just might take a few tutorials to find the one that speaks to you
It’s so cute the way you say, “Y’all”.
Very interested in the specifics of costuming for circus and your idea of interviewing friends in other circus disciplines. I think this would make a fascinating series.
Thank you, your input is noted! 💙💚
Technical aspects of planning and constructing costumes for performance sounds fascinating!
Thank you :-D Noted!
@@ShannonMakes It makes perfect sense. I appreciate what you do with history bounding and, of course, I love the recycle/upcycle stuff you do!
Yes, tour of vintage patterns please.
This was so interesting! Thanks fir dharing, looking forward to the next psrt!
Thank you, you're very welcome, and thank YOU for stopping by to listen!
Loving all your content!! It's all up my alley. I crochet, sew, do remodeling, woodworking, recycle, upcycle and love old homes. Love the circus content too! Loved seeing you perform! It's amazing!!!
Thank you!! 🥰🥰
@@ShannonMakes You are so welcome! 😀
Skydiver! Cool! I’ve done 2 tandem jumps -in California. Loved it!
Circus stuff would be great🎉 love your sewing, and of course watching you and Phil work on house.
